For this month’s story, Andrew collaborated with bi-coastal stylist, Beau Quillian. Andrew was first inspired by the location, the stylist’s Franklin Hills home, which was once aptly described as, ‘granny punk’. Beau was inspired by the iconic Bouffants of Mr. Kenneth (a legendary New York hair dresser known for the coiffures of women the likes of Jacki O.) and Tipi Hedron’s wardrobe in Hitchcock’s The Birds. The character was to be a modern girl with a retro sensibility...and... TESLA GIRL was born...

I think I had a good eye.” ~ HERB RITTS “The best everyday example of relativity, the finest symptom of human intelligence, is humor. (...) Design without humor is not human. The word ‘beautiful’ does not mean anything. Only coherence counts. An object, design or not, is primarily an object that meets the parameters of human intelligence, which reconciles opposites. The Pop Object The Still Life Tradition in Pop Art
A
cquavella Galleries is where you will find The Pop Object: The Still Life Tradition in Pop Art. Curated by renowned art historian John Wilmerding, the Pop art survey will include over 75 important works by Robert Arneson, Vija Celmins, Jim Dine, Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Alex Katz, Edward Kienholz, Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, Marisol, Claes Oldenburg, Ed Ruscha, Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist, George Segal, Marjorie Strider, Wayne Thiebaud, Andy Warhol, John Wesley, Tom Wesselmann, and H.C. Westermann. In addition to significant loans from prestigious private collections and institutions such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, The Museum of Modern Art in New York and The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the exhibition will include seminal work from several of the artists’ personal collections. The central focus of the exhibition is the development of Pop art in the United States and still life’s role in the context of Pop. “Still life also has long been treated as a minor preoccupation for artists, yet has turned out to be the occasion for some of Pop’s most innovative and witty expressions,” said Wilmerding. Each featured artist views the still life as an important vehicle of expression in capturing themes of contemporary life reflective of a post-war consumerist society. Though Pop p.

artists did not consider themselves as being a part of a unified movement, the still life object has been of shared interest to both canonical Pop artists and lesser-known artists. Two major innovative ideas will be explored in the exhibition: the expansion of still life beyond painting into multidimensional sculptural forms, and the presentation of a variety of new media as modes of expression. To achieve this, Wilmerding has organized the exhibition into four major themes: food and drink, the garden, body parts, and clothing and housewares. For example, Tom Wesselmann’s laser-cut steel drawings of flower bouquets are presented alongside Roy Lichtenstein’s graphic black flowers in oil on canvas. The juxtaposition reveals the various pioneering styles and techniques each artist employed while paying homage to earlier traditions of painting. John Wilmerding is the Sarofim Professor of American Art, Emeritus, at Princeton University. He has written more than twenty books on American art and artists, including most recently monographs and catalogues on Tom Wesselmann, Robert Indiana, Roy Lichtenstein and George Segal. The fully illustrated catalogue The Pop Object: The Still Life Tradition in Pop Art will be co-distributed and published by Rizzoli and will contain a forward by William R. Acquavella and an essay by curator John Wilmerding.

SELF CONTROL
by Tiffini myers
T
iffini Myers is a Photographer and Photo Editor based in Los Angeles, California. With a unique visual perspective, she utilizes her camera to observe life in new ways. Myers uses this medium as a form of experimentation while exploring her passion forvisual language in photography. With her most recent project Tiffini asked the questions...Is the mind part of the body, or is the body part of the mind? How do they interact? Do they work together? Or does one control the other?

Self Control is a collection of photographs that explores this very question. Her subjects submerged their heads into a tank of water, in their own attempt to experience a personal struggle with self constraint. The subjects push their minds and bodies to their limits to assess their ability to fight the inevitable urge to breathe underwater. In these images you will see their struggle between mind and body. Growing up with Adriano Goldschmied for a father she was groomed at a young age to assimilate to the fast pace and cut throat scene that we know Fashion to be. Similarly, Marta sets out to redefine what the modern standard is to consider oneself a trendsetter. Having established bases both in Los Angeles and in Italy, her style has developed into a chic, cool, and unique perspective which is unparalleled in the market. to the throne is landmarked by the launch of her brand Emm Gold. Along with creative director Marika Amegah, Marta has combined a ready-to-wear collection that has the grittiness to fit in any socialite’s closet. Marika who also trained under Adriano has a contemporary yet singular outlook that she prescribes to every look. The collection blends Marta’s Italian background with Marika’s LA creativity to create a kaleidoscope of ideas for the buyer. As their first impact on the fashion world Emm Gold decided to express ideas through a series of limited edition T-shirts. Only a limited amount of each style will be produced with every round. Each series is designed to ignite a different emotion in the customer. The premiere set titled “I Am My Own...” hits on the fundamental need of selfdependence in order to discover ones path in the world.
“I AM MY OWN... This saying was born one hot summer night in the Italian countryside while looking up at the glittering night sky and thinking about the future of our generation. These days everyone is so concerned about who’s cool and what’s hot that we begin to loose ourselves and forget that the “cool” is already inside of us. For each individual it takes a unique form and reveals itself in different ways. Instead of aspiring to be like to others we want to promote the notion of turning within and striving to be the best version of yourself that you can be. The collages on our limited edition IAMOI tees are of people throughout history that embody this philosophy and became living examples of this mindset.” Marta Goldschmied EmmGold.com

MICHAEL CH U RCH
The French word collage literally means pasting, and in art it refers to works with elements glued to the surface. The technique is a modernist mainstay, with Braque and Picasso in the forefront, closely followed by the Dadaists and Surrealists. Often witty and fanciful, collage allows artists to break the rules of visual logic and impose their own versions of order on the chaos of perception. recently and have only been doing collage for a little over a year. Michael says “his love of finding images, deconstructing them, studying the remains of his destruction, then working to put it all back together again is like life itself. Michael’s photographic collages demonstrates the classic Surrealist combination of elements, creating bizarre juxtapositions that are at once arresting and whimsical. Sometimes his process is successful, sometimes not, but here are a few that we think are very successful, striking, beautiful and evoke a sense of mystery. society6.com/MichaelChurch

Gilles LeBlanc at the Substrate Fine Art Gallery
The Substrate Fine Art Gallery is pleased to present Gilles LeBlanc’s “Courbe Éventuelle” art
exhibition. This will mark the first major U.S. exhibition for LeBlanc, who has enjoyed much critical acclaim for his latest body of work in Canada. The show will feature original mixed-media paintings using marble dust as an art medium and also displaying a series of prints. Highlights include some of his Los Angeles inspired pieces: Pirate Boat and Skeleton (North, South, East, West), Courbe Éventuelle-Los Angeles, Pig of Good Fortune and Seven. This exhibition “Courbe Éventuelle” is a body of work inspired by the artist’s travels to Haiti, Abu Dhabi and Los Angeles which has been created over the last three years at his art space in Los Angeles Studio E. LeBlanc is inspired by deterioration, natures effect on buildings and streets after many years of exposure to the elements also by cultural and political events around the world. inspiration from beat-up cement walls that surrounds Ayiti (Haiti), where he lived from 2003 to 2005. He started integrating dots in his work while residing in the United Arab Emirates and since 2008 his body of work is greatly influenced by Los Angeles streets, sidewalks, and graffiti and their eventual deterioration. Texture and composition are LeBlanc’s primary focus. He simulates deteriorating textures found in the streets and sidewalks on his canvas by layering marble dust and acrylic varnish. He adds graffiti inspired by a moment or a place in time to complete each artwork. LeBlanc has exhibited his works in Canada, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Europe, United Arab Emirates and the United States. Artist Gilles LeBlanc will be present at the opening exhibition at the Substrate Fine Art Gallery in Los Angeles from May 2nd to May 16th 2013. Exhibition curated by Ramses. SubstrareGallery.com

THE
PORTHOLE A simple and beautiful infusion vessel that can be used for cocktails, oils, teas, or any infusion imaginable. The Porthole is a simple, beautiful infusion vessel designed by Martin Kastner of Crucial Detail design studio. The Porthole can be used to create striking cocktails, oils, teas, dressings, lemonade, coffee, or any other type of infusion. The idea for the Porthole was born during a conversation with bar chefs preparing for the opening of the Aviary. We were discussing “fast infusions” -- cocktails evolving during the course of the time it takes to serve them -- and it occurred to me that what we’re really looking for is a window into another world, space, and time. An image of the submarine porthole in Karel Zeman’s 1958 movie ‘The Fabulous World of Jules Verne’ came to my mind and the design direction was set. A small batch of the Porthole vessels was hand-crafted at Crucial Detail design studio. At the Aviary, it is used to create, display, and serve a variety of time-lapse infusions for seasonal cocktails. Since its debut a little over a year ago, the Porthole has gained significant attention. Aviary cocktails displayed in the Porthole have been featured in dozens of magazines and blogs, including the cover of Food Arts magazine. Many Aviary guests have requested to purchase the vessel, including some who, when told they couldn’t buy one, have taken it upon themselves to ‘liberate’ them from the lounge. That’s when I realized that the design and functionality of the Porthole resonates strongly with people. The enthusiastic response to the piece has driven our decision to adopt the Porthole for production. The technology used to produce the original small batch revolved around our in-house capabilities, utilizing methods suitable for small-scale production. The cost of each unit in the initial batch was over four hundred dollars. In order to make the Porthole more accessible, we have sought higher volume manufacturing technologies and have completely redesigned the components to achieve our target price of less than $100 dollars. The finished Porthole is dishwasher safe, durable, and easy to use. We have gone through a rigorous manufacturer selection process and identified a partner with the capacity and experience to produce the Porthole to our high standards. The Porthole holds 390ml (13 fl oz) of liquid. It is made of precision ground and tempered Low Iron Glass, food grade Delrin, food grade Silicone, and Stainless Steel. CrucialDetail.com

The Thinnest Watch In The World
Central Standard Timing was started by Dave Vondle and Jerry O’Leary in December 2011. Dave’s an interaction designer and electrical engineer. Jerry’s an industrial designer and mechanical engineer.
The idea for the CST-01 came when Dave taped an E Ink panel around his wrist and said to Jerry: “I want to make a watch like this.” By “this,” Dave meant an ultra-thin, minimal, and low-power watch. For the last year, Dave and Jerry have spent countless hours hacking, making, designing, breaking, and prototyping their way to the innovative timepiece you see here. They’ve collaborated closely with global partners such as E Ink who are leading the way in flexible, low-power no.

consumption electronics, as well as worked closely with partners in the USA to manufacture the stainless steel band, polycarbonate mask, and all of the charger plastics. Central Standard Timing is based in Chicago, in the middle of the Midwest, and is committed to keeping as much of the sourcing, manufacturing, and assembly of CST watches in the US as possible. Both Dave and Jerry work at IDEO, a global design and innovation firm. Together, they have over 24 years of experience inventing, engineering, and designing products for the world’s top brands. In their spare time, they like to make stuff. CentralStandardTiming.com
