Introduction Alike human beings, plants also reproduce. Before learning about the reproduction in plants, one has to know about a flower, its parts and functions. A flower and its parts are involved in sexual reproduction in plants. Pollination also plays a major role in reproduction in plants.


Parts of a Flower - Structure


Parts of a Flower - Description 1. Sepals → Protect the unopened flower 2. Petals → May be brightly coloured to attract insects 3. Stamens → The male parts of the flower (each consists of an anther held up on a filament) 4. Anthers→ Produce male sex cells (pollen grains) 5. Stigma→ The top of the female part of the flower which collects pollen grains 6. Ovary → Produces the female sex cells (contained in the ovules) 7. Nectary → Produce a sugary solution called nectar, which attracts insects


Reproduction in Flowering Plants Both male and female parts of a flower are involved in the process. Pollen is carried from a male part (Anther) to a female part (Stigma) by wind, insects or other animals by a process called pollination. It releases male gametes that fertilise the female gametes in the ovules. The ovules develop into seeds from which new plants will grow.
