And so the year began with a great deal of uncertainty for South Africans. With the Rand steadily depreciating against the Dollar and other premium currencies, labour unrest, fuel price hikes and the controversial e-tolling system finally in place in Gauteng, consumers are in for tough times ahead. With the economic outlook bleak, at least for the short-term, businesses across the country are also being compelled to re-invent themselves in a quest to survive the storm and preserve jobs, and our industry is no different. But there is one concern that continues to grow and prosper at a steady pace, seemingly against all odds. In this issue we re-introduce you to two entrepreneurs who serve as a sterling example to us all of what can be achieved with hard work, a strong work ethic and a dogged determination to succeed at all costs. Read all about Tonway Tyres on page 2 Allegedly also feeling the pinch, is the imported tyre sector, which in an attempt to ‘be heard’ at government level, has established an Association, TIASA (Tyre Importers Association of South Africa), which its members hope will assist them in airing and addressing their concerns. For years, it has been suggested that local tyre producers and importers were in opposing camps, but as the story on page 9 illustrates, they may, in fact, have more in common than was previously thought. One thing is certain, there is much at stake for both sides. They need to find a way to work together in combating some of the pressing issues facing the South African tyre sector, in particular, the alarming practices relating to underinvoicing on the part of less-scrupulous importers, which is affecting the new tyre companies, who import a vast number of tyres themselves, as much as it affects legitimate importers. On an international note, the Tire Technology Expo held in February in Cologne, Germany, where Continental was named Tire Manufacturer of the Year, was a record-breaking event, and showcased a number of new innovations, such as the new tyre labelling innovation by Bandall which is featured in our World News section on page 30. Also featured in this edition is a story on the newly-implemented Point S Group of stores, which was founded overseas by independent dealers who came together to boost their clout and buying power in the market. Does retreading make up a considerable segment of the business? Given current economic factors, retreading is possibly more important than ever before. Our two factories operate 6 days a week, 24 hours a day to cater for the demand of our retread products. In October 2013, we reached an important milestone by purchasing

During the period March 2013-February 2014 we hit yet another milestone by purchasing more than one million kilograms of tread rubber, equating to more than 74 000 retreaded tyres in this period. I would like to believe that our Award as Best Bandag Franchisee for 2011 is testament to Tonway’s delivery on the Bandag Package of Value. How many staff do you employ? We employ around 160 people. We have a significant staff compliment for our retread manufacturing as well as administration processes,
part of which is focused on ensuring that we are able to report back to customers on findings from fleet inspections and regular scrap analysis. What are some of the more pressing challenges facing your business? With our core business being the truck sector, rising operating costs are of concern as well as the state of the economy and the impact this is likely to have on transport fleets. The deterioration of the road network is another area of concern. A further pressing issue is managing the growth of the business, particularly with respect to capacity and our ability to deliver to our customers. We strongly believe that our knack for making quick decisions and providing a swift service to our customers has been a key component to our growth, so it’s important that we don’t allow the standards we’ve established in the

TIASA PAVES WAY FOR IMPORTERS TO TACKLE ISSUES
HEAD-ON With imports now allegedly accounting for more than 50% of South Africa’s total tyre sales, the country’s leading importers are uniting their efforts in a bid to address pressing issues and create what they refer to as a ‘fair playing field’ in the market. With the establishment of a formal body dedicated to serving the needs and interests of its members, TIASA (Tyre Importers Association of South Africa), in August 2013, importers claim they now have a solid platform through which to liaise with government and to combat unlawful practices in the marketplace for the sake of both importers and the new tyre manufacturers.

Aims and objectives According to de Villiers, (the founder of TIASA), attempts to interact with government on industry related matters is fraught with difficulties for individual companies that do not belong to a formal association, and it was this realisation that led him to consider the establishment of an official body to protect the interests of this segment of industry. Renier Botha, CEO,Lombard Tyres agreed: “There has been a need for the creation of a combined

Striving for self-regulation Another important goal for TIASA is to establish, in line with SARS, a policing mechanism for self-regulation, with TIASA members working with audit tools that will highlight risk areas while applying a strong training methodology. GET 80% MORE MILEAGE OUT OF YOUR MICHELIN TYRES WITH MICHELIN RETREAD TECHNOLOGIES Enjoy the cost-saving benefits of a RECAMIC retread in your fleet. Sign up for our RECAMIC Voucher Campaign today! For every Michelin tyre specified on your new truck purchased between 1st July 2013 and 31st December 2014 you are entitled to receive a RECAMIC voucher. This R300-00 voucher can be redeemed against your purchase of a RECAMIC retread at any RECAMIC factory in South Africa. This retread can, however, only be applied to a Michelin casing and the tyres must be registered before 31st December 2014.
Why RECAMIC? The RECAMIC Cold Retread Process is a quality system that uses the exact same compounds and patterns as found in new Michelin tyres. Combining these exclusive components with state-of-the-art technology allows us to create the longest wearing retreads available. The high percentage of natural rubber lowers the rolling resistance and therefore improves fuel economy. The RECAMIC process requires less under tread thereby dramatically reducing heat build-up and helping to increase the overall performance of the product.
What our clients say According to H.A. Bosman, Managing Director at D.J. Bosman Transport “Our operation consists of 90% long haulage with 10% rough underfoot conditions. We use Michelin 385/65R22.5 XFE on steer and 315/80R22.5 XDE2+ on drive. On average we get 285 000km on the steer tyres and 265 000km on the drive tyres before we send them off to be recapped with RECAMIC retreads. Usually we get 2 recaps per casing which greatly reduces our CPK. We can testify that we get no less than 80% of the New tyre performance from our RECAMIC retreads.”
How To Receive your RECAMIC Voucher Once you have purchased your new truck fitted with Original Equipment Michelin tyres, your RECAMIC voucher is just three simple steps away.
Step 1: Make sure you qualify. This offer only applies to Michelin 385/65 R22,5, 315/80 R22,5 and 12 R22,5 tyres fitted onto new trucks delivered between 1st July 2013 and 31st December 2014. Step 2: Go to www.recamic.co.za and complete the online registration process before 31st December 2014. Be sure to submit a true copy of the proof of delivery of your vehicle and include the number of Michelin tyres fitted to your new truck. Step 3: You will receive confirmation and validation of your registration along with your unique RECAMIC Voucher via e-mail. This voucher will entitle you to a R300-00 discount on a RECAMIC retread on any Michelin casing. How to Redeem Your RECAMIC Voucher Once you have registered and have received your RECAMIC Voucher you can claim as follows:
Extend the Life of Your Tyres with Michelin’s 4 Life Package RECAMIC retreading is recommended by Michelin Tyre Company S.A. and forms a fundamental part of their unique 4 Life package designed to reduce your tyre spend and improve your CPK* (cost per Kilometre). *(CPK is calculated by dividing the cost by the mileage achieved)
* Only MICHELIN casings qualify for a discounted RECAMIC retread. Terms and conditions apply. For more information visit www.recamic.co.za

Reinventing the wheel The concept of the airless tyre, and Michelin’s much-vaunted “Tweel” was featured on these pages way back in 2009. Five years later it still isn’t a mainstream reality, but more players and specialist applications are slowly bringing it to the fore By Colin Mileman
It’s 127 years since the first practical pneumatic tyre as we know it was conceived by Scottish inventor John Dunlop. Granted, it was first fitted to a bicycle, but it revolutionised the tyre industry and has allowed us to comfortably ride on a cushion of air ever since. Although there have been staggering developments in design, construction and materials used over the decades, the basic concept remains unchanged. And until the sci-fi (or Jetsons) inspired flying car/pod/shuttle era dawns, we’re likely to continue in the same fashion for the foreseeable future.

There are a couple of companies and creative individuals out there, however, that are doing their utmost to literally reinvent the wheel. The airless tyre has been promised by some as the new ‘big thing’. Michelin started the craze with the Tweel which debuted in 2005 – or did they? and 100-percent recyclability – thus introducing the notion of “cradleto-cradle” recycling.
Talking of the Tweel, what has happened to Michelin’s innovative solution from 2005? Well it has become a production reality, but its focus has
According to the company, the Air Free tyre uses a high-strength but flexible high-performance resin as one of its core materials, along with cutting-edge design and simulations to reduce stress and deformation in the inner part of the tyre. This has enabled a maximum speed of 60 km/h in what it terms “ultra-light vehicles” – which once again indicates that there’s still a long way to go before it hits your showroom floor. The tyre also relies on a simplified tyre structure that is said to make a significant reduction in the roughly 90-percent energy loss that occurs from repeated changes in the shape of tyres as they roll. Last year Hankook rolled out its interpretation on the theme, called
Colin Mileman is a freelance motoring journalist, photographer and advanced driving specialist with over 17 years of experience in this field. i-Flex. The concept constitutes the tyre and wheel in one unit which the company indicates makes the tyre lighter with a higher level of shock absorbency through the unique mesh structure. This is claimed to contribute to reduced fuel consumption and improved NVH levels, with additional benefits including less unsprung mass which aids handling, and 95-percent recyclability. It is also working on an eMembrane tyre concept that is capable of adapting its profile to suit the driving conditions. For instance in a city environment the centre of the tyre retracts to reduce the road contact and friction, while in high-performance conditions the full width of the tyre is extended to provide maximum levels of grip. Interesting ideas once again, but the latter in particular is unlikely to appear on the horizon any time soon, if ever. The others could well become a medium to long-term feature of the eco-car craze that has permeated Europe and the Far East. Interestingly, though, the airless tyre concept has been introduced to other realms, with companies like Britek offering advanced “energy return wheel” airless tyres for mountain bikes that dramatically increase drivetrain efficiency while eliminating punctures. Polaris, the well-known all-terrain vehicle manufacturer, now produces a specially developed so-called “military grade” ATV featuring its “Terrain Armor” non-pneumatic tyres, that also bear a close resemblance to the Tweel. Originally devised for and tested by the US military, it is now available to the consumer market on its Sportsman WV850 HO model for extreme work applications. So maybe the idea isn’t so far-fetched after all?
