The unveiling of the new Pirelli Calendar which historically takes place at the end of November, reminds us that another year is about to draw to a close. This year, the release of the 2013 Pirelli Cal was staged in the country that served as its setting, Brazil. This much loved artistic icon continues to delight and entice audiences the world over with its seductive portrayal of the female form, with this latest, 40th edition being described as elegant, creative and artistically distinct. One lucky reader stands the chance to win one of these coveted calendars, so don’t delay! Enter our competition on page 36 either online via www.satreads. co.za or on fax: (011) 658-0010! And speaking of Pirelli, there’s a new man at the helm of Pirelli Tyres SA. Giovanni Arrigone hails from Dubai where he was responsible for Pirelli’s business interests in the Middle East and some Asian countries for the last 10 years. Following a long standing career with the Italian tyre producer, Arrigone is looking forward to taking up this newest challenge as he steers Pirelli Tyres into the future on the African continent. To read about his plans and objectives for the company, turn to page 2 Year-end also marks the time when we hear how the end users, our customers, rate our service levels. As has become customary over the years, we select a handful of operators to participate in our End User Survey, the results of which make for interesting reading on page 9. What is the industry getting right and in which areas can it improve? The commercial transport business tells it like it is. Also in this issue, we showcase new innovations recently unveiled at SEMA 2012, catch up on all the latest controversy surrounding Waste Tyre Management and bring you the results of a recent Tyre Shoot Out, conducted by a leading motoring publication. All this and much more in our December edition as we bid you and your families farewell and happy holidays!

of the world? In a work-related function, yes. You arrived two months ago. What are your initial impressions of the local tyre market? I have been pleasantly surprised for multiple reasons. For one, the market is a lot more sophisticated than I envisaged. Added to this, South Africa boasts a strong work ethic with a nation of people that appear to be hard-working, committed and professional in everything they set out to do. The Pirelli staff complement in particular has impressed me in their willingness and ability to follow and implement the direction set out by management. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that the Pirelli brand is well entrenched in this market.

certain preferential rates. Plus, our premium customers’ stores will, in the months to come, be an initiative that we hope will later evolve into the establishment of dedicated Pirelli stores. However, our approach in this regard will remain a soft one in keeping with local and international market trends. What we are striving for is that in the years that follow the Pirelli brand will become even more prominent in this market via its own flagship stores and other initiatives. What are some of these initiatives? We plan to begin the New Year with a firm focus on our direct customers which will include franchise stores, independents and the Tiger Wheel & Tyre franchise group which offers obvious synergies in terms of the high performance market (Pirelli is recognised as the world’s leading high performance brand) and their support of Formula One, to which Pirelli is the sole supplier.

My next priority will be to begin exploring the possibility of bringing Pirelli truck tyres into the market, something which I believe is critical to the long-term success and sustainability of the brand in the South African and African markets. Of course, given the complexity and sophistication of this market, we realise that in order to achieve our aims in this regard, we need to align ourselves with the right distribution partners who will be able to provide a full cradle-to-grave service. Consumers over here demand certain standards in terms of product quality and after-sales service so we need to ensure that we are fully geared to meet these demands before forging ahead.

Any new products in the pipeline? There are currently a number of new products in the market which have not officially been launched as such, in line with the newly implemented EU tyre labelling legislation. Tyres are now being constructed to offer lower rolling resistance and in accordance with eco-friendly manufacturing principles, and these same tyres are being imported into SA. For example, the new P1 Cinturato Verde (available in SA), is the ‘greener’ version of the P1 Cinturato and the new P7 Blue, is an evolution of the P7 Cinturato. What would you estimate Pirelli’s current market share to be in SA? Our current market share is somewhere below 3%, something which I hope to see grow to closer to 5% in the next few years. Whilst we are not competing with

truck radial and speciality tyres. In addition to tyres, the product assortment will extend to car parts and related fitment services. Kevin Slabbert, Head of Franchising for ContiTrade Africa added that FIT&GO is all about offering affordable, quality products and services while being honest and dependable to the customer. “Our aim is to enhance the traditional offering of the tyre fitment store and assist in improving service levels,” said Slabbert. The FIT&GO brand is built around traits which have universal appeal – dependability, friendliness and honesty. Slabbert said, “These traits will govern the approach and relationship that ContiTrade SA has with its FIT&GO franchise partners who in turn will follow through on this with their customers.” FIT&GO will appeal to the business person currently in the tyre retail industry or wanting to enter this market with the full support of a local manufacturer. Outside of the fresh approach to the franchisee, what CTSA offers in terms of product, brand and consumer pull will clearly differentiate this opportunity from some of the others in the market. The first FIT&GO is set to open in Welkom on 1 December 2012. Welkom is the first of many centres planned. REDISA PLAN RE-GAZETTED

The Minister for Environmental Affairs, Ms Edna Molewa, has reapproved the REDISA Waste Tyre Management Plan for immediate

implementation. The plan replaces the REDISA plan that was suspended in terms of an interdict granted on 20 November 2012. The legal challenge to the implementation of the REDISA plan,

launched in August this year, contained a long list of criticisms. The case was heard on the 8th of November, with judgment delivered on

20th November. The judge found in favour for REDISA on all counts

except one technical issue regarding the insertion of waste reduction targets into the plan after the public comment period, and determined that the plan should be suspended pending a review application. However, he also suggested that the Minister could simply withdraw her approval of the plan, and re-apply her mind to approving the plan

with the insertion removed. This is what the Minister has now done. Hermann Erdmann, REDISA CEO, commented “We are very pleased that the Minister has taken such prompt action to resolve the chaos that the suspension of the plan was causing in the tyre industry. Getting the plan suspended pending a review application meant that

the industry would have been in a state of uncertainty for months, not knowing if the waste tyre management fee was going to have to be paid or not. A review application takes months to complete, and for all that time the industry would have had to provisionally set aside funds to pay the fee if the Review Court found in favour of the Minister, and deal with refund claims if it found against her.

Tyres & Rims Conference well attended by Mining Sector In a bid to combat the rising death toll in the mining sector as a direct cause of tyre and rim failures, the Institute of International Research (iir), held a day’s conference at the Wanderer’s Club yesterday.

Â? Â… Â?Â?Â?

Mining and tyre personnel alike converged on the day to highlight the need for dedicated efforts on the part of the mining and tyre sectors to address this all-important issue before any more lives are lost. This year alone has seen 78 fatalities in the mining industry (excluding the recent Marikana incident), 28 of which can be directly attributed to tyre and machinery problems.

Tyre Shoot Out puts tyre brands to the test The October issue of Leisure Wheels magazine features a comprehensive all-terrain tyre shoot-out, the first independent test of its kind in more than a decade. The test was held across a wide variety of terrain, from Witsand Nature Reserve in the Northern Cape to the Gerotek Testing Facility near Hartbeespoort Dam, and to the gravel skidpan of African Dream Adventures, also near Hartbeespoort. It included sand, wet and dry tar handling and braking, as well

The brands tested include (in alphabetical order): Apollo, BF Goodrich, Bridgestone, Continental, Cooper, Dunlop, General, Goodyear, Hankook, Kumho, Maxxis, Mickey Thompson, Pirelli, Velocity and Yokohama in the size 265/65 R17. To ensure repeatable results, the team used Goodyear’s Wrangler HP as the control tyre – after every three runs with the all-terrains, Grobler, the Hilux and the HPs tackled the respective test to check for any changes in conditions. A state-of-the-art pyrometer was also used to keep tabs on surface and air temperatures after each run. “It was an eye opener, comparing these products back to back, in the same conditions, says Grobler. “Some of the tyres surprised us with how well they performed, while others fell out of the bus in certain tests. My opinion of some products has certainly changed.” Grobler believes that, in the end, it comes down to personal preferences and requirements. And compromise.

This makes the Grabber AT an excellent all-terrain tyre for use on and off the road,” she said. “Its robust construction provides protection against damage to the tread pattern and sidewall area. The technology used in the Grabber AT ensures comfortable handling combined with high mileage potential. “The compound and the tread pattern were developed with a focus on maximum safety for both off-and-on-road driving,” Johnson added. “The winner of this shoot-out scored highly in most of the tests. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best tyre if you want to drive from Cape Town to Timbuktu. Do you drive 90% of the time on tar, and 10% on gravel? Or is it vice versa? “Tyres are about compromise, and each driver has to weigh up the compromises he or she is willing to make. This test showed that you can’t have a tyre that is extremely hardy and tough and provides excellent grip on a wet road. I believe

Exclusive … and elusive! Tyre development and original equipment selection is an integral part of any new car – but it can lead to very limited choice …

Never before has the co-development of car and tyre been so intimately and intricately intertwined. Any new vehicle has endured a rigorous research, test and development regime to produce what the manufacturer regards as the best-possible compromise between performance, comfort, safety and efficiency – to varying degrees in each direction of this complex matrix.

By Colin Mileman Tyres are so fundamental to this final package that the partnership begins at the very earliest stages of conception, and are refined, tweaked and modified until they are a perfect match in every respect. It seems a fairly straightforward and obvious concept, but there’s no doubt that the car and tyre manufacturer have become inseparable – particularly in the performance car sector.

also been applauded as one of Time magazine’s ‘Best Inventions of 2012’. The Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Awards, now in their eighth year, recognise the innovators and products that have dramatically advanced the fields of technology, medicine, space exploration, automotive design, environmental engineering and more. is not yet available for purchase. Essentially, AMT will make tyres self-inflating, which could mean substantial fuel savings. While the technology is complex, the idea behind the AMT system is relatively simple and powered by the tyre itself as it rolls down the road. All of its components are contained within the tyre. As soon as pressure gets too low, an internal pressure regulator opens to allow air to flow into a pumping tube, and as the wheel turns, the flattened part squeezes air from the tube through an inlet valve into the tyre. Among other products honoured by Popular Mechanics for their role in shaping the future were a featherweight metal and the world’s fastest (to date!) and most electrically efficient supercomputer. Time’s Best Innovations Time’s technology editors annually list the year’s “most important innovations.” This year included Goodyear’s pioneering AMT development among their top 25. Goodyear’s self-inflating tyre was joined by 25 other brilliant innovations – from a home test for HIV, batlike suits that enable humans to fly, a friendly robot named Baxter, and the Curiosity rover that recently visited Mars.

PASSENGER TYRES Stylish and sporty, Mercedes-Benz’s B-Class rolls off the assembly line on Goodyear tyres. Award winning Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 and feisty EfficientGrip tyres, both with Run On Flat, were among the leading designs selected for original equipment fitment to the new B-Class when it was introduced to European markets late last year. Mercedes-Benz has dubbed its new class as the car “for people who don’t think like their parents”. Its distinctive contours, modern interior and dynamic performance are matched by forward-thinking environmental awareness and outstanding safety. Only the highest quality equipment and most efficient technologies are fitted to this confident operator, and that includes, of course, its tyres. B-Class incorporates Mercedes-Benz’s unique BlueEFFICIENCY measures. Comprehensive vehicle optimisations – like intelligent aerodynamics, an ECO stop/start function and tyres with optimised rolling resistance – help save fuel and ease the burden on the environment.

the same unfailing professionalism for every item of equipment, especially their tyres. Goodyear supplies RHSll and RHDll tyres to the Mercedes-Benz Actros and Axor range of trucks, which are imported to South Africa in a knockeddown format (CKD). Norman Newcombe, Goodyear’s National Sales Manager: Commercial OE said the Goodyears were selected by MercedesBenz as “the best all round tyres for their application”. The truck tyre division’s exceptional service and support has further impressed this important customer. “As a supplier of premium products in the South African transport industry, Mercedes-Benz Trucks associates itself with business partners who are prepared to support their products 100% percent and who share our passion of building sustainable relationships with our mutual customers. Goodyear South Africa is definitely a huge value add partner in our business Douglas Wasserman, Goodyear Business Development Manager, said customers had a choice of four Mercedes B-Class derivatives: B180 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY (diesel); B180 BlueEFFICIENCY (petrol); B200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY (diesel); and B200 BlueEFFICIENCY (petrol). “Goodyear’s EfficientGrip 205/55 R16 ROF is a standard option tyre for all these vehicles. Customers have the option of selecting a vehicle with a bigger OE-approved tyre size in the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2. These products are readily available in South Africa, and imported regularly to satisfy local demand, on the following codes: l 205/55R16 91V EfficientGrip MOE ROF – Product code 526757 l 224/40R18 92W Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 MOE ROF – Product code 526851

“Tyre fitments to high premium marques such as Mercedes-Benz complement Goodyear’s marketing strategy for the Ultra High Performance (UHP) segment of the market,” said Robert Harris, Goodyear Marketing Manager. “Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 is our flagship premium tyre, so there is huge value to having it imported on such a high profile platform. There are also gains in the replacement market and it is all good for the brand.” TRUCK TYRES Mercedes-Benz trucks combine comfort, economy and safety in every vehicle.
