AAD3 Residences_Urban Rooming for Detroit Advisors: Lars Gräbner & Christina Hansen
AAD3 Residences is a proposal for one neighborhood which consists of three distinct urban blocks. This project envisions urban housing formed by socially-diverse amenities and diverse unit supply as a central vision to future prototypes of housing. The project site is poised for this call, located one-half mile from Detroit’s Eastern Market, adjacent to the Dequindre Cut Greenway off the intersection of Saint Aubin St. and Division St. Our goal is to envision an urban housing project which provides distinct, functional amenities to accommodate a population with increasingly diverse needs.

All three courtyards are elevated five feet PLAZA CUT above ground to accommodate a halfCONNECTION sunken parking. This amenity, which runs beneath each block unit, provides elevated privacy for street level units. Each level of the residential buildings contains a diverse mix of studio, one and two-bedroom units.
Dequindre Plaza is our most open public space, acting as a threshold between the public interface and the more private Urban Balcony. It anchors the threshold spaces in the corner closest to the Eastern Market, and grounds the project in what is a shared commercial space for both the public and residents alike. Along Division St., the Plaza faces one of many murals which define the character of the district from the bodies of ‘Murals in the Market’ work.
AAD3 offers a more affordable communal style living option known as the ‘share-house’, where individual or groups of residents may live in a communal style duplex. These include individual bedrooms, shared bathrooms and larger DIVISION ST communal living and kitchen spaces. With diversity in unit options, multi-generational families can live in close proximity and residents of many lifestyle preferences may be accommodated.
The sub-communal threshold spaces accommodate shared amenities like a car sharing/ electric car charging area and bike storage. These pocket spaces are accessed by cyclists and pedestrians all through the sub-communal spaces bewteen each neighborhood block.

One Room_Studies on ‘Domestic Astronomy’ Advisors: Craig Borum & Amy Kulper
The One Room Studio explores the myriad possibilities of architectural theory and design through the disciplinary conceit of ‘one room’. Term research was based around one iconic room to be mined for the disciplinary positions at stake in its material, formal, and theoretic disposition. The room selected for the term research was Philippe Rahm’s ‘Domestic Astronomy’, located in Louisiana Museum of Humlebaek, Denmark. Rahm’s proposal challenges horizontal occupation of domestic spaces, and offers a literal occupying of atmospheres of varying thermal capacities.
The room is organized by optimal thermal comfort zones created by proximity to the heat (incadescent) light source and conversely, the cool (flourescent) light source. The architect and author describes this as a project of “artifical interior climates of modernity”.1
Unpacking a Room (left) required a systematic unpacking, enumerating and analyzing of the room and its elements. The axonometric explores a range of specific details on temperature, spatial distribution of domestic elements, target thermal values, actual thermal values, and an overall understanding of the existing dichotomy between domestic rituals and artificial thermal comfort.

One Room_A Well Tempered Room Advisors: Craig Borum & Amy Kulper
As a departure from the term’s research on Rahm’s ‘Domestic Astronony’, the distribution of these domestic spaces are predicated on target thermal comfort levels of certain activities. While this triggered ideas of thermal atmospheres in a room, one feels constricted in how Rahm resolves occupying atmosphere through iconography and thermal mapping and less with unique spatial constructions.

This room is positioned between challening what constitutes a room (an enclosure, a threshold and horizons/fields of vision through apertures) and the intimacy of thermal delight. The room’s intensity, the elements of fire and water, are to be experienced at varying levels of immersion and proximity. This proposed space curates this explicitly. Equally in question is the extensity of the room in its environment: a field of wheat which is as elemental as fire and water.
We trace the interplay of the room’s intensity and extensity through the taxonomy of its objects, a curated taxonomy of occupancy. With twenty vignettes, we may highlight just a few. Four filled pails are in the room: water, wheat, sticks, and ashes, which index livelihood, agriculture and thermal production. Two frames: photographs of a flood and a fire in the field. The sickle and sun-hat, presence of an agriculturalist. A sheet and a book, indicating leisure and inquiry of knowledge. A fire poker, indicating use of the hearth and ondol heating system.
Varying levels of immersion were critical in the spatial framework of the room: shin, knee, and neck deep waters, a wall of falling water, a thin ceiling of water supported by a glass. Overwhelmingly, the room is interested in producing a range of thermal experiences with a medium such as water or air, and how the architecture stages the human body to engage (or disengage) from it.

A Well Tempered Room_Triptych Cabinet Assemblage Cabinet, Gesso, Candle Extinguisher, 2B Pencil, Burnt Organic Matter, Binocular, etc.
The tetrapytch illustrates the ‘Well Tempered Room’ from four vantage points which reveal the relationships between floor, wall, ceilings, and apertures. The wormseye section persepective (left) reveals the underpinning interplay between the water and thermal infrastructure of the room. Throughout the second half of the term, our research in theoretical/literary position was invested Gaston Bachelard’s two texts: Water and Dreams and The Poetics of Space. For Representation, studying the works of Raimund Abraham’s ‘9 Houses Triptych’ in the UNBuilt text and Joseph Cornell’s Box Assemblages contributed to the work’s qualitative values. The triptych cabinet assemblage (above) teases provocations of the room’s extensity: events, floods, fires, objects, taxonomies and cycles of the room’s resources. The cabinet is a working model to produce scenarios which could expand the narrative of the room, while alluding to some of its objects and elemental intensities found in the drawings. 22

Mise en Place_The Anatomy of an Affogato Instructor: Craig Borum
01. A conical burr grinder will guarantee uniform grounds which is essential to ensure consistent and uniform extraction with any coffee apartaus. In this instance, we will be using the Baratza Encore. Set grind level to zero (0.0) for finest grind, akin to the consistency of flour.
02. Water quality and ratio will guarantee proper strength and volume. This will call for 250-300g cup of espresso (closer to an espresso lungo). Minerals and chlorine levels will affect the taste and quality of the espresso extraction. A Moka pot exerts approximately 1-2 bar (100 to 200 kPa) pressure while a full-fledged espresso machine pulls at 9 bar (900 kPa). This pressure difference will not produce a true espresso, but most closesly resembles an espresso when making it at home.
03. Water-to-bean ratio is critical for the production of any coffee form. This will call for 20g of coffee beans. Generally, the bean selection is up to the consumer. As espresso is a concentrated drink, it is helpful to understand the tones and general darkness of the beans you are roasting as the bean’s character will be frontal and augmented. A favorite blend is La Colombe’s Nizza Blend, with sweet, nutty, and fruity notes.
06. Espresso is only half the battle in any affogato. Be sure to have a scooping device to dish out one serving of gelato per affogato.

04. Boil 250-300g of fresh water. One advantage to boiling water then pouring into the bottom chamber of the Moka Pot is less wait time on the stove and guaranteed near-boiling temperature for efficient extraction. Be careful to use a towel when pouring boiling water into bottom of Moka Pot for later handling.
05. Fill bottom chamber with fresh water after boiling, fill the basket with ground coffee, firmly screw on top and place on low to medium heat source. Keep lid tilted for ease of viewing. Watch and listen for a perculating crema to rise from its center, then immediately turn heat to low as to not boil. Remove Moka Pot when complete.
07. When choosing your gelato flavor, go for a simple base and complementary to your espresso. A favorite with La Colombe’s Nizza blend is Capogiro’s Fior Di Latte. Gelato first, espresso poured second and you are ready to enjoy.

Analog/Manual Proto-Spatial_ The Cuniculus Guild (Parts i + ii) Advisor: Perry Kulper
26
The Cuniculus Guild (Parts i + ii) is the response to a brief which called for experimental drawing using methods of hand drawing, scanning, cutting + pasting, digitizing and back again. Our intent is to produce an aspectival drawing, capturing critical aspects for a house of taxidermy with a trophy display room. The drawings are asking what might be discovered in the act of the focused production through drawing and analog work. The joy is in the discipline of constructing a drawing with no pre-meditated outcomes.

Body and Space_Choreography Drawing + Wormhole Model Advisor: Lorena Alvarez
The Body and Space Choreography Drawing captures an original choreographed sequence descending a stair-case. Over four hundred points were handmeasured on an (X,Y,Z) axis to track the gestures. With volumes and overlaps, the drawings tracks the movement of specific body parts by lofting points of the same body part in the order of the sequence’s beginning and end. The particular body parts were focused on in each view due to their significant range of motion as perceived from that perspective. Plan (top right): tracks the movement of the right arm Front (bottom left): tracks the movement of the right leg and arm simultaneously Side (bottom right): tracks the interweaving of the right and left legs.
The wormhole model followed suit as a literal carving of the choreography’s sequencing, as depicted in the photo-montage. This model began the conversation of how carved spaces derived from a set of data points could inform the creation of light and dark spaces through the process of reducing mass. 28

(~) Draw (-) Cut (+) Assemble_Fingerprint Table Instructor: Dustin Bruggman
The FingerPrint Table deploys four unique methods of joinery to create a fluid, symmetrical, and expressive table form. Radial slats are intercepted and held in a flush slat joint by the legs of the table. The legs, designed as a stair cut procession, meet at the critical center intersection and are held by a counter-sunk puzzle joint. A counter-sunk puzzle joint was created using a carefully calibrated pocket toolpath to allow for a snug-reinforcing joint to combat compression loads.

On each of the two sides of the table, parabolic legs meet and are secured by a shimmed slat joint which spans and braces the mirroring edge of the table through the table center. Our table top is a continuation of the expressive form of the legs, with a surface contour toolpath, creating the namesake “FingerPrint deboss. In an effort to subtly yet effectively secure the table top to the legs of the table, our design team employed a flush peg joint at the table corners.

Steam Bending_Art NURBeau Instructor: Asa Peller
Preceding the iterative design process of form-finding with steam bending, the team understood and distinguished the variations of b-spline and NURB curves, their application in digital design software and their relation to the art of steam bending. The ArtNURBeau project was carried out using a simple jig: a steel rod welded to a steel plate, mounted to a large sheet of pressure treated wood. With this framework, the group began experimenting with free-form steam bending of wood which allowed for a number of trial and error takes on the limits, nature, tensions, and compliances of the material. The project’s purpose was to understand the material limits and behavior of steam-bent wood. The final design stemmed from using a series of choregraphed bends and additional jigs which required quick bends, clean clamping, and a full day of drying. After producing one module, we arrayed it in four to produce an ornamental form, inspired by the Art Nouveau period of decorative art and architecture of the 1890s.

Wilmington Friends Donor Wall_ Design, Fabrication, Installation DIGSAU
The Wilmington Friends Donor Wall project involved Principal Architect Jamie Unkefer, Architectural Designers Nick Musser and Sarah Cancienne and myself. Musser and Cancienne were responsible predominately for the schematic and design development process of the project, while Unkefer overlooked the project’s financial and logistical parameters. My involvement revolved around the fabrication, client-correspondence and final instillation of the project.
The installation process was viewed to be mosaic-like in its nature. Each piece mounted by hand on a CNC-milled template board. The order and sequence was arranged intuitively to diversify the tones of each unique block. The mounting board purposefully contains hundreds of blank spaces, to allow for addition of donor blocks from future donors.
