What?
•The port town announced as City of Culture 2017 •This attracted more people - tourist and employment in town, hence needs to improve infrastructure of the town. •Public realm projects identified and executed in old town area - recently completed. •There are more projects which are in pipeline; and needs to be considered to activate the whole town. •Scale bridge was proposed and built to connect the city centre to a hoped for redevelopment on the eastern side of the river Hull. Inevitably it was dubbed the bridge to nowhere after the regeneration failed to materialise.

The Big Idea Encroachment may sound a highly negative word. It means intrusion into, trespass on, invasion of, infiltration of. Green Encroachment here refers to intrusion of green spaces into the development, to improve existing infrastructure which is the need of time now. Diagram below explains this concept
Development
Encroachment
How?
Green Encroachment
Brief - 01
Brief - 02
Brief - 03
Focus on River Hull Eco corridor.
Retain the integrity of old town (the old town cocoon), which now has A63 cutting through it.
Master-plan Design proposals for the 1.5km stretch of River Hull.
Freeing the river edge clearing up the industrial building touching the edge. Using contaminated sites as to make them more greenbreathable and accessible to people working and living in the areas nearby.
Understand the circulation / movement - pedestrian, cycle, vehicular and suggest appropriate solutions to minimise vehicular and encourage pedestrian movement in old town.
Achieve seamless cycle and pedestrian linkages from neighbourhood to river and down to the old town and the Humber.
Proposal to enhance the quality of open areas made available based on Brief 01 and focus on seamless pedestrian and cycle connectivity along the river edge based on Brief 02.
EXISTING
OPTION 1
OPTION 2
OPTION 3
A 63 cutting through the city, creating a distinct separation and hindrance for people to access water from the old town.
Taking down the Myton bridge, which will result in diverting the major traffic on A63 to A165, a route via Train Station and busy area of the city. But it may create a chaos at Train station entry exit points, increasing the pollution within the city. Advantage: No striking road line passing through old core.
Making Myton bridge - a green bridge (only for cyclist and pedestrians) - like a bridge park, which will result in diverting the major traffic on A63 to A165, a route via Train Station and busy area of the city. Advantage: Softening the striking structure.
A63 cutting through old cocoon caters for heavy traffic moving to the ports further east. Diverting this traffic to A165, may not be a good idea. Probably it may create more pollution through the city, more traffic congestions due to insufficient road widths. Keeping these factors in mind and the idea of core integrity - idea of tunnelling A63 came up. This may involve high investment, heavy structures, latest technology etc. to create BREATHABLE CITY CORE.

Extents of Change
Derelict Site
Clearing of Industrial buildings
Two roads along the river defines the area.
Derelict sites identified within the limit of roads. There are very few available sites and are in fragments. Hence very difficult to achieve continuous green.
Clearing up the industrial crap to achieve continuous green space, connecting North to South, Residences to Work place to old core. To celebrate water.

Integrated green
Connecting green with neighbourhood
Combining derelict sites and cleared area generated opportunity of continuous green and quality space.
Making green usable by people in close proximity. Proposal to connect green within the communities, reaching to the central green spine.
OPPORTUNITIES / POSSIBILITIES Green corridor
By acquiring derelict sites and contaminated sites and making the, available for green corridor development will make a large difference to the river and surrounding area. This will help achieve sizable green corridor. Narrow width of about 25-35m may not work as corridor to occupy wildlife, people, cycle and the river, hence opening up is needed. Possible to achieve seamless green along the river.
Design for Health and Well-being
Health of people is dependent on the quality of usable space we provide. It also depends on the proximity of it from the neighbourhood. The proposed green will provide opportunities to connect the neighbourhood to the green; encouraging people to use this seamless space along water edge. Activities like cycling and jogging could be used more.
Access to water and celebrate
By opening up the river edge, people are drawn to water edge to celebrate it. Series of activities like eco park; play areas; allotments; sports zone; outdoor educational activity; jogging trail; cycle route loops can make the green corridor function well and safe.
Linkages from workplace and residence
Identifying pockets of greens in neighbourhood and connecting to the major green - a river park.
Urban Regeneration
Presently Hull City have invested a lot on public realm projects to improve on quality of life, increase tourism etc. More urban regeneration projects, to reclaim the integrity of old town should be proposed and well connected with each other.

Option 2 looked more at the development on the east side, making more sense to proposed scale bridge- connecting old town to the new area. This option will look at how old interacts with the new; and how sensitively the new area is designed and including the area above road tunnel to achieve integrity of the old core and further extending to the east side.

Design proposals in a wider context The proposal with respect to the old town looks to achieve seamless connection - smooth transition of people (pedestrians) within the old town. There is a distinct disconnect as in the current situation with A63 passing through the core diving it in North-South. The Design proposal looked at tunnelling the A63 (which is a major route, connecting all towns to the Ferry terminal - port; hence cant be ignored. This tunnelling will open up the opportunity of having a smooth transition within the quality space. The mixed use development on East bank not only generates high chances of investments - bringing money to the town but also looks at enhancing the biodiversity - ecology of the area offering varied typology of spaces from parks with ponds and extension of woodlands over the tunnel etc.

Hull public realm project material strategy is inspired and adapted from the materials used earlier; which give the feel and richness of the old town. Public realm document states " New materials within the public realm need to be of a high quality, attractive, robust, and maintainable. They need to enhance the streets and squares within the context of the architecture and locality. Therefore whilst a common palette will ensure continuity and maintain a strong identity, each space should be designed to take into account the special qualities of architecture, use and historic sensitivity". Since this new development is on the old harbour side within the close proximity of the old cocoon and proposals are based on linking and interaction of the old and the new; materials used here are of same typology. There is not literal copying of the finishes, but is based on the usage and function of space. Old town architecture is reflected here with the use of bricks on the facade and hence landscape material has a subtle tone to it, with highlights of bands at few areas.

This sectional detail explains the entry drop at Art Gallery from the Plaza. The stone is sloped away from the entry to avoid ingress of water . PA
This sectional detail (Stepping Stones) shows the junction of paving and the grass area. As this is in the urban setting and may have high wear and tear, steel edge is used to avoid cracking of edge stone and to get neat edge lines.

Above illustrations are from 'The Planting Design Handbook' by Nick Robinson. These principles are applied to the design proposal and application areas are shown on diagram on the left.
Existing Woodland; provides shelter to the new development.
Proposed Woodland; arrangement which create enclosures/pockets of small activity areas.
Intertidal marshland; Saltmarsh planting like spartina maritima and other reeds.
Avenue planting; for the approach road to the Deep & access to the development.
Wetland planting; salt tolerant species, as it is in close proximity to river Hull.
Green connectors - cluster linkages. Narrow path and trees with light foliage & few with flowers, with understory of groundcover.
Specimen trees within building setting; Plazas dotted with trees. Backdrop trees for road avenue planting; with understory of about 1m high shrubs. Sculptural trees in courtyard with the canopy at about 2.5m, this provides activity space below it. Green fingers; area with moderate density of plantation and understory of about 0.75m high shrubs. Fresh water pond; area with plantation suitable for boggy soil type. Plant type includes emergents, submergents and oxygenators.
Screen planting; enclosing the spill over areas. This will have mixed height of understory as it will be viewed and appreciated alongside.

Kingston upon Hull - Old town
Why? •The port town announced as City of Culture 2017 •This attracted more people - tourist and employment in town, hence needs to improve infrastructure of the town. •Public realm projects identified and executed in old town area - recently completed. •There are more projects which are in pipeline; and needs to be considered to activate the whole town. •Scale bridge was proposed and built to connect the city centre to a hoped for redevelopment on the eastern side of the river Hull. Inevitably it was dubbed the bridge to nowhere after the regeneration failed to materialise.
Health of people is dependent on the quality of usable space we provide. It also depends on the proximity of it from the neighbourhood. The proposed green will provide opportunities to connect the neighbourhood to the green; encouraging people to use this seamless space along water edge. Activities like cycling and jogging could be used more.
By opening up the river edge, people are drawn to water edge to celebrate it. Series of activities like eco park; play areas; allotments; sports zone; outdoor educational activity; jogging trail; cycle route loops can make the green corridor function well and safe.
Identifying pockets of greens in neighbourhood and connecting to the major green - a river park.
Presently Hull City has invested a lot on public realm projects to improve on quality of life, increase tourism etc. More urban regeneration projects, to reclaim the integrity of old town should be proposed and well connected with each other.

By acquiring derelict sites and contaminated sites and making them, available for green corridor development will make a large difference to the river and surrounding area. This will help achieve sizable green corridor. Narrow width of about 25-35m may not work as corridor to occupy wildlife, people, cycle and the river, hence opening up is needed. Possible to achieve seamless green along the river.

Hierarchy of Nodes
the grey part of the town.
There is always a hierarchy of nodes in any town. This then defines the activities taking place around that area. The idea is to understand the scale of these and incorporate it in proposals. These nodes of old town is envisaged as courts in the proposal and varies based on the activities it hosts.

Stitching the old and the new. Achieving the connect between the old and the new - which is not physical but in terms of architecture, scale and proportions, materiality - activities etc.
Design Proposals in a Wider Context The proposal with respect to the old town focusses to achieve seamless connection smooth transition of people (pedestrians) within the old town. There is a distinct disconnect as in the current situation with A63 passing through the core diving it in North-South.
Old core
The Design proposal looked at tunnelling the A63 (which is a major route, connecting all towns to the Ferry terminal - port; hence cant be ignored.
The BIG Idea
Encroachment may sound a highly negative word. It means intrusion into, trespass on, invasion of, infiltration of. Green Encroachment here refers to intrusion of green spaces into the development, to improve existing infrastructure which is the need of time now. Diagram below explains this concept
This tunnelling will open up the opportunity of having a smooth transition within the quality space.
3
The mixed use development on East bank not only generates high chances of investments - bringing money to the town but also looks at enhancing the biodiversity - ecology of the area offering varied typology of spaces from parks with ponds and extension of woodlands over the tunnel etc.
Encroachment

Development

Brief - 03
Focus on River Hull Eco corridor.
Retain the integrity of old town (the old town cocoon), which now has A63 cutting through it.
Master-plan Design proposals for the 1.5km stretch of River Hull.
Proposed building cluster.
Transitional green spaces introduced act as a breather. These green pockets are intended to encourage community interaction and movement amidst the buildings making the space more porous.
Ground level usage includes Café’s, Restaurant, Bars etc. This will make the lower level active more permeable to people.
Level 1 usage includes office spaces for small and large business. This will allow ingress of people for certain time span during the day.
The main aim to introduce residential block is to have the spaces active throughout. Though the intensity of activity will reduce during night time, but the area still remains operative by the residents.
The blocks are arranged with open spaces (terraces) offered to the residents on upper level; which also brings relief to the building mass. These terraces further acts as green roofs, providing opportunity for terrace gardening, vegetable growing etc for residents.

OPTION 2
Making Myton bridge - a green bridge (only for cyclist and pedestrians)- like a bridge park, which will result in diverting the major traffic on A63 to A165, a route via Train Station and busy area of the city.

An extension to the art gallery and cafe around, this plaza is dotted with trees. The space is confined with buildings on three sides with double height openings which extends the views at eye level. On the open side is the spectacular view of the old town and salt-marsh planting in the foreground, which are mostly the grasses giving feel of flowing water. The plaza is further soften by introducing wide green strips and seats along it. With use of exposed bricks, sloping roofs and beige stone in paving and elements like alleys etc. character of old town is retained.
