academic Reclaiming Green Project: River side Park at Kirkstall Valley Kirkstall, Leeds, UK

Award: The ARUP Landscape Prize for encompassing the ideas and principles manifested within the Arup Cities Alive - Rethinking Green Infrastructure initiative.

Design Concept: The site sits amidst beautiful setting - nature reserve, river and stream. Presently the area is contaminated with superstore sitting next to old Mill building. The park as of now is not accessible to people, as it houses rugby fields there. Working on assumption that superstore is relocated, creates an opportunity to open the lake frontage to people. More visitors -More accessible areas -More safe. The Site comprises of many large existing trees along the water edge and few along the mill block. The design proposal is keeping in mind to retain maximum existing trees. Proposed planting is such that it gels well with existing planting. As site is next to river, planting palette includes tall grasses, which depicts water and moves as wind blows through valley- Wavy. Paths are meandering which helps people to slow down their speed and make them experience and celebrate the space. These paths - Board-walk are 2.5m wide and are 1m above the adjacent ground. The waterfront park is designed to be at lower level so as to take and retain water during rise in River level. Some water here percolates, some is taken to goit through culvert/pipe from amphitheater area and channel next to play area. Few garden shelters are proposed in small gardens - quiet pockets used as well-being pods. A sculpture garden at rear side of Visitor’s centre is proposed which will display art works related to history of Mills in Leeds. Board-walk widens at few points and protrudes towards river side; as viewing points with seats - near to water and deep in nature.

Leeds - Bradford Airport

Design Concept:

The idea is to make this space as a feature surprise element after people experience the landscape through tunnel. Proposed is English Oak tree (native to the country) with three Inspiration from Site Pattern panels in cor-ten steel with voids as abstraction of the tree figure, arranged in a way that people experience the scale of it. These will be lit up and will respond to the airplanes at airport taking off and landing. As plane lands or take off, it releases energy from the fuel polluting the environment, turning this feature deep red (dead) and as noise reduces turning it back to bright colour.

Green Encroachment: design concepts, ideas evolution - Advanced Project: River Hull Regeneration Kingston upon Hull, UK

About Hull: Hull - From worst city in U.K. to city of culture 2017. Once at its peak, the England’s most important cities Hull suffered heavy bombing during the Second world war. It began to come back on its feet during 1960. Exciting plans and investments are regenerating Hull. The evolving city plan aims to bring whole community together to make Hull, a place of which people can be proud of. Initial ideas, thoughts and approach: Proposals are divided in four briefs. Brief 01 - Looking at areas along the river hull within the city and regenerating these Lifeless spaces. Brief 02 - Looks at circulation in and around the old core. Looking at the possibility to tweak A63, which divides the old city. and how integrity of old core can be retained. Brief 03- Based on finding and outcomes from brief 01 and 02, Design area is identified which includes open space along river hull and area which has potential to be developed and which interacts with old core. Brief 04 - Looks at detailing of the park open space along river Hull.

Design for Health Access to water and Linkages from work- Urban Regeneration place and residence celebrate and Well-being

By acquiring derelict sites and contaminated sites and making them, available for green corridor development will make a large difference to the river and surrounding area. This will help achieve sizable green corridor. Narrow width of about 25-35m may not work as corridor to occupy wildlife, people, cycle and the river, hence opening up is needed. Possible to achieve seamless green along the river.

Health of people is dependent on the quality of usable space we provide. It also depends on the proximity of it from the neighbourhood. The proposed green will provide opportunities to connect the neighbourhood to the green; encouraging people to use this seamless space along water edge. Activities like cycling and jogging could be used more.

•The port town announced as City of Culture 2017 •This attracted more people - tourist and employment in town, hence needs to improve infrastructure of the town. •Public realm projects identified and executed in old town area - recently completed. •There are more projects which are in pipeline; and needs to be considered to activate the whole town. •Scale bridge was proposed and built to connect the city centre to a hoped for redevelopment on the eastern side of the river Hull. Inevitably it was dubbed the bridge to nowhere after the regeneration failed to materialise.

Presently Hull City has invested a lot on public realm projects to improve on quality of life, increase tourism etc. More urban regeneration projects, to reclaim the integrity of old town should be proposed and well connected with each other.

Encroachment may sound a highly negative word. It means intrusion into, trespass on, invasion of, infiltration of. Green Encroachment here refers to intrusion of green spaces into the development, to improve existing infrastructure which is the need of time now. Diagram below explains this concept

Development

Brief - 03

Focus on River Hull Eco corridor.

Retain the integrity of old town (the old town cocoon), which now has A63 cutting through it.

Master-plan Design proposals for the 1.5km stretch of River Hull.

Understand the circulation / movement - pedestrian, cycle, vehicular and suggest appropriate solutions to minimise vehicular and encourage pedestrian movement in old town.

Achieve seamless cycle and pedestrian linkages from neighbourhood to river and down to the old town and the Humber.

Transitional green spaces introduced act as a breather. These green pockets are intended to encourage community interaction and movement amidst the buildings making the space more porous.

Ground level usage includes Café’s, Restaurant, Bars etc. This will make the lower level active more permeable to people.

Level 1 usage includes office spaces for small and large business. This will allow ingress of people for certain time span during the day.

The main aim to introduce residential block is to have the spaces active throughout. Though the intensity of activity will reduce during night time, but the area still remains operative by the residents.

The blocks are arranged with open spaces (terraces) offered to the residents on upper level; which also brings relief to the building mass. These terraces further acts as green roofs, providing opportunity for terrace gardening, vegetable growing etc for residents.

OPTION 3

Making Myton bridge - a green bridge (only for cyclist and pedestrians)- like a bridge park, which will result in diverting the major traffic on A63 to A165, a route via Train Station and busy area of the city. Advantage: Softening the striking structure.

A63 cutting through old cocoon caters for heavy traffic moving to the ports further east. Diverting this traffic to A165, may not be a good idea. Probably it may create more pollution through the city, more traffic congestions due to insufficient road widths. Keeping these factors in mind and the idea of core integrity - idea of tunnelling A63 came up. This may involve high investment, heavy structures, latest technology etc. to create BREATHABLE CITY CORE.

architecture | landscape architecture

Located in the pink city of Jaipur in highend residential colony. The idea of Architecture for building started with accommodating requirements on principles of Vaastu Shastra, which made plan strict and simple. The highlights of the house is neat box effect, play of horizontal & vertical lines & mass. Use of Material, Exposed brick making a bold statement with contrast of Grey Delhi stone on vertical elements and Yellow Pokran Stone used on horizontal planters. The entry to house is double height giving the grand feel at first. Partial double height is open on sides and partial inside the house for the continuity of grandness which remains as you enter the house. The landscape concept for this residence is to have complimenting simple approach to tone down the building mass popping out of the site. Hence Idea of flowering creepers, tall Asoka trees on south side & climbers from building.

Main Landscape Spaces

Landscape Concept

Pedestrian Movement

Landscape Feature

Built form defines the distinctive undulating profile of the main plaza. The forecourt garden of the Banquet area has a somewhat independent identity at the North East end of the building.

The landscape concept is directed toward following the spirit of the building profile to give a sense of continuity and flow. This is expressed through the proposed gently curvilinear lines of the paving pattern which seeks to enhance the sense of uninterrupted flowing space , without sharp curves or overt divisions.

Two major directions of movement are addressed. Longitudinally along the length of the plaza and across the plaza, connecting the main retail spaces at plaza level.

Landscape feature punctuate and animate the plaza space. The entrance is announced by a major fountain set into a landscape of sculpturally modelled steps and ramps. The connection between the blocks, defined as a soft, garden like space offers visual relief from the otherwise largely paved surface. At the end, as a kind of terminal feature is the amphitheatre – a center for outdoor activity which could draw people through the plaza. Elsewhere in the plaza are place of repose (garden seating) and also activity, such as temporary, movable kiosks which would add life to the space

WaterFeature at Entrance

Sets into sculpturally modelled landscape. Sense of Grand entry defined with 11m diameter Bowl with water trickling down from weir, 6m high fountains and water from spouts with special light feature.

Garden link

A break from the hard paved surface is an informal connection between two towers, with bridge on upper floors defining this space a connection area. This connection is defined by special paving in Granite with coloured tiles

Amphitheatre

is set at the termination point of Plaza. Backdrop wall with carvings on stone, Planters along the cut-outs at seating height with large canopy trees, special feature lights completes this outdoor activity space.
