My Profile
SAURABHA IYER saurabhaiyer@live.com 0450596648
I am a Graduate of Architecture from The University of Melbourne. While undertaking an enriching experience at the University of Melbourne I took active part in the cultural, community and social activities within the university and the broader community. For This I won the Leader in Community Award in November 2019. I have also been an active contributor to the architecture community in the form of active participation in events and volunteering work at the Robin Boyd Foundation. My MSD competition entry for the Rope-less Lift System in 2018 has also been published by the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat in their journal as a Case Study. At MSD we are taught a refined sense of architecture design, good technical skills and conceptual thinking. Over the last few years I have devoted my interest in politics, environment, economy and tried to gather knowledge about different areas outside my practice to truly understand the implications they have on each project.
2 ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
Having traveled, lived and studied in various parts of the world I have developed interpersonal and communication skills. I can get along with new people easily and am easy to work with in a group. I ask questions when in doubt and believe in hard work. Currently working as Architectural designer in Bendigo and I am learning something new everyday. Moving out of my comfort zone in the mids of a pandamic and starting a new journey taught me a lot about myself. With the pandemic settling in and becoming a part of our everyday life I believe it’s time to re-start working towards my professional and personal goals. To continue learning I am looking for work experience in an exciting and vibrant setting, with a group of friendly motivated coworkers. Looking for an opportunity to learn and grow within the Design community of Australia with an aim to become a registered Architect and an active woman of the Built and Design Industry.

NIGHTINGALE WORK - LIVE 2019 THESIS - MSD 2019 NIGHTINGALE NIGHT SCHOOL SOFTWARES USED - SKETCHUP, REVIT, LUMION, ARCHICAD, PHOTOSHOP
Businesses like small/new architecture firms, Language centers, home based bakery, etc. Do not require a big space and usually do not need additional facilities of a coworking space. With the new prosed zone (Commercial 3 Zone) which deals with small scale industries and housing together, the proposal for a seamless worklive lifestyle can be pushed forward. Using the principles of the sustainable and affordable living of Nightingale, this project investigates implementation of combined working and living spaces of the new Commercial 3 zone within the inner suburb of Brunswick. Proposing a new system where commercial and living spaces are scattered all along the building.

Urban Spaces Replacing the parking lots at the front of the site with sitting space for a great urban interaction with the neighbourhood. Providing the residents and workers of the building with stopping points. This becomes an spot for visual and direct communication. Activating the back of the site with commercial spaces there by forcing users to use every part of the site. Not only does this provided more employment spaces but also create an urban meeting point.

The corridors along the courtyard in buildings like these are not only circulation space but also secondary urban spaces. The corridor becomes the area for secondary social interaction, visual interaction and an urban stopping or resting point. This makes these corridors one of the public areas of the building and makes them an important part of the design. All the apartments and their employment spaces open into this courtyard.

URBAN LIVING 2019 MSD 2019 STUDIO E SOFTWARES USED - SKETCHUP, REVIT, LUMION, PHOTOSHOP
This was an innovative design project that challenged the status quo of apartment living in the inner-most suburbs of Melbourne. Innovative ideas dealing with living in high density inner suburbs of Melbourne – “More residents in tighter spaces with a smaller carbon footprint” The focus was on the quality of internal and external spaces and spatial connections; also public realm outcomes and opportunities that connect to the city to create/foster community in a broad socio-economic setting. Project challenged both planning rules and development norms that favored mediocrity in our housing stock. The site for the Studio project is within the West Melbourne Structure Plan, which proposes a combination of floor area ratios + preferred height limits. Within this context we were encouraged to explore opportunities for urban/architectural form, higher density indoor/outdoor living, public/private zoning and active and passive sustainable design within the inner suburbs.

The spaces within the building are divided between private and community spaces. The ground floor, 1 st floor, mid level garden and roof garden are the community spaces. These spaces provide the users with social interaction. Private spaces in the building are the residential apartments, With each apartment have it’s own private open space.

Connect. Express. Create an ecotone. The design aim is to create an ecotone, by activating the two principal street entrances of Collin’s Place, blurring the site boundaries with the adjacent city blocks and creating outdoor and indoor spaces of expression to create an open and connected site. Use levels and organic floor plans to promote direct and visual connection to create hot spots(spaces) to promote people to people interaction and connection within the site and its spaces creating the ecotone.

FLOOR PLATE DEVELOPMENT
Dealing with the complexities of Privately Owned Public Spaces in the city, our site was the iconic Collin’s Place, designed by I.M.Pie. The challenge was to redesign the “Great Space” at Collin’s Place. Design development included Conducting an in-depth research in concepts relating to public spaces and the architecture corresponding to it, site analysis to improve the site conditions and even conducting studies to compare public spaces in Melbourne and around the world. Deriving my concept from a singular cell, where different types of cells represent different types of people in a public realm, further supporting the idea of a strong inclusion and connection in and around the site. The design outcome is inclusive and considerate. It provides space for different users in the city’s public - private realm.
