CONCEPTUALIZING THE LIBRARY developing a original design for a library through the study of various models and iterations. (Work in progress)

COMPOSING POSTURE A person’s posture is affected by the shape of their environment; whether it is the furniture available or the size of the room. Bass Wood Plexiglass Metal Rod 6” x 6” x 6”

COMBINATION MODEL Created through the interlocking of three other models from a team to create a new space. The final was formed by simplifying the most important element in each iteration. Museum Board Foam Core 7”x 9” x 9”

OCCUPYING SPACE By expanding the form of the Combination Model in Rhino, I was able to derive three different renderings of a space within a library. All three renderings take into account Gathering, Storage, and Reading. Gathering describes where people tend to accumulate. Storage covers what options are available for people to use as shelving units or even CD holders. Reading involves what postures the space offers for the usage of a variety of medias. The concept behind these spaces is that there is interchangeable use between the furniture and storage units with the structure; giving the structure function.

THE SITE We began the site research by first analizing what factors affect how a space is experienced and used. Starting with the general area of where our library would be located, we created diagrams to represent the different factors in the area. I focused my information on the location of the greenery and what sort of age groups and genders the different stores appealed to.

3D DIAGRAM A physical model studying the different factors in the digital diagrams. I shaped the wire to represent different age groups and used different colors to separate gender. Sewing pins Black thread Foam Core Jewelry wire Acetate Paper 11 x 17

UNIT WALL FORMATION a unified wall, structured from individual units, that stack and interlock

ITERATIONS ONE AND TWO Starting from three simple concepts to create a single unit that can be expanded to multiple possibilities. Bristol Paper 1st iteration: 2”x4”x 2” 2nd iteration: 4”x6”x 2”

INDIVIDUAL WALL UNIT The final iteration is a rectangular slate containing interlockable triangles that are able to connect, creating a stable structure. 2-Ply Chipboard 4” x 6” x 2”

COLLABORATIVE WALL UNIT

working as a group in order to develop a successful unit that is able to be mass produced, as well as form three different and unique iterations.Sketch models were constructed from chipboard and pine wood. Final constructed from MDF and Plywood.

LIVING WALL

a interactive continuous promenade created by seven unique structures

EXPERIENCING SPACE From individual concept sketches to working as a studio to create a variety of iterations to discuss the physical complications with the site and use of the construction. 12”x12”x12” Chipboard Basswood

FULL SCALE Each of the seven constructions were built on site, and could be taken apart and reconstructed. Materials used for the final construction were 2x4s and MDF. Concrete footings were added as a solution for the varying typography. 8’ x 8’x 8’

PAPER TO REALITY From drawings to sketch models to the full life scale 8’ x 8’ x 8’ constructions.

THRESHOLD RESEARCH investigating the use and layout of the Dieterle Vocal Arts Center

DIAGRAM ANALYSIS A team analysis of movement and layout represented by a series of diagrams.

BASS WOOD MODEL Simplifying the most influential elements of the space into a three part band, while maintaining the most important spatial qualities and constraints. Bass wood Wood glue 12” x 12” 12”

WOOD AND STEEL INSERT A Threshold moment created by drilling welded steel rods into a wooden insert. The insert’s darker wood creates a contrasting effect against the soft Basswood. Basswood Steel Rods 4” x 8” x 8”

PLASTER CUBE AND ARMATURE a wooden framework that can become a unified structure with a casted plaster cube

39

FORMING THE CONCEPT A framework created from square sections stacked together to create a vertical layering. It suggests a void and solid pattern that runs throughout the armature. Basswood 12” x 18” Cast Plaster 8” x 8”

100 + 1 Developing a unique form from at least a 100 of the same ordinary objects using no adhesives, only a stitch. My Body Mantle was constructed from 500 dryer sheets, which were all handsewn and weaved together.

DRAWING ANALYSIS A series of free hand sketches studying form and space. Micron Pens Gray Scale Markers Graphite Pencils 8.5” x 11” Canson paper
