MESSAGE FROM MANAGEMENT

THE HEART OF OUR NEW LEDUC FACILITY by George Chow, Executive VP, Corporate

T

he year 2015 is shaping up to be an extremely exciting year for Savanna as we continue to set the Path for Others to Follow. We have commenced construction on three ultra-deep AC pad triple rigs and an ultra-deep AC telescopic double rig for our U.S. and Canadian operations. We will also be completing five workover rigs and three flush-by units for our Australian operations. As most of you are aware, the vast majority of the construction activity for our capital equipment, including these rigs, as well as our Canadian drilling and well servicing activities, are based out of our existing Nisku and Leduc facilities. So why has Savanna decided to build new facilities in Leduc, Alberta? Nisku/Leduc is the heart of operations for oilfield services in Canada as well as the hub for manufacturers and suppliers who support our business. Savanna was founded in Canada and we want to have a visibly strong local presence that will increase our brand awareness where our company was founded. Savanna is here to grow and we are here to stay. We have experienced tremendous growth globally including our Canadian drilling and well service business units. This growth is over-stressing both our existing Nisku and Leduc facilities. We lack the shop and yard space, we have limited warehouse facilities, and our maintenance and fabrication as well as our engineering facilities are outdated and undersized. We are also constrained in the amount of available land for facilities growth in our present locations. In late 2011, we began our quest for new facilities with an extensive evaluation of appropriate locations around the Nisku and Leduc areas. This was not a simple task. We wanted to ensure that our new location will not only accommodate our existing requirements but allow us to grow our business. In addition, 2

careful considerations had to be given to ingress and egress of our equipment from these locations, proximity to manufacturers and major suppliers, height restrictions imposed by existing flight paths of traffic to and from the nearby Edmonton International Airport, exposure in the community, and cost. After many site visits and discussions with various developers, it was concluded that the only way to accommodate Savanna’s requirements was for the developer of the Leduc Business Park to create a new phase in its development from raw land and to subdivide appropriate parcels for our specific require-

MESSAGE FROM MANAGEMENT ments. This demanded a substantial capital commitment from both Savanna and the developer, as well as co-operation and concessions from the City of Leduc. A significant amount of effort from Savanna personnel, the developer, and the City of Leduc was required to ultimately create the parcels of land that Savanna required — 30 acres for our drilling, engineering, and capital equipment commissioning facilities; and 8 acres for our well service facility. Our land purchase was finally completed in the fall of 2013. The design of our facilities started at the beginning of 2013 with the assessment of the various design firms. As these facilities represent a key piece of Savanna’s foundation for future growth, we wanted to ensure that the facilities represent “One Savanna.” The key design features of these facilities is to assist both our Canadian well servicing and drilling groups to more effectively carry out their day-to-day activities and to include the ability of our key stakeholder groups such as Supply Chain Management and Technical Services to support our operational teams in Canada and abroad to commission and build new capital equipment as

well as maintain, retrofit, and re-certify our existing fleet. We have discussed the facility requirements with the vast majority of our end users to solicit their input into what they would like to have in our new facility. We wanted to ensure that the local identity and culture is appropriately expressed in our new facility, as well as creating environments dedicated to collaboration and in turn inspiring innovation and

Q1 RESULTS

Q1 2014 Results

HIGHLIGHTS - Overall EBITDAS: $59.4 million on $238 million of revenue. Decrease of 13% from Q1 2013. - Australian Operating Margin: $5.1 million. Increase of 24% from Q1 2013. - US Operating Margin: $12.7 million. Decrease of 5% from Q1 2013. - Canadian Operating Margin: $55.2 million. Decrease of 14% from Q1 2013.

In

the first quarter of 2014, lower activity levels in Canadian shallow drilling and Canadian oilfield services drove our overall financial results down relative to Q1 2013. A sharp decline in coring activity in March, in part due to Savanna’s own drilling efficiencies, resulted in an 18 percent decrease in operating margins for shallow drilling versus Q1 2013. Additionally, Canadian well servicing and rentals demand in Q1 2014 was significantly lower compared to Q1 2013, and combined with year-over-year pricing decreases, resulted in a 36 percent decrease in operating margins. In the U.S., well servicing utilization remained high and as a result of incremental rigs added into North Dakota over the past year, operating margins increased by 86 percent compared to Q1 2013. Conversely, lower utilization in U.S. drilling, as rigs idled in Q4 2013 only gradually returned to work in Q1

2014, coupled with higher per day costs, resulted in a 17 percent decrease in operating margins relative to Q1 2013. The decrease in drilling margins more than offset the increase in well servicing margins in the U.S. In Australia, the Brisbane and Toowoomba teams continue to make significant progress in all aspects of operations. Improved utilization in well servicing and an additional drilling rig operating for half of the quarter resulted in a 24 percent increase in operating margins in Q1 2014 versus the same period in 2013. 12 NEW RIGS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

In May, Savanna secured a four-year contract to deliver a 1500 horsepower AC triple drilling rig to its U.S. drilling division specifically designed for the Marcellus operating region. Delivery is expected by Q2 2015 and it is anticipated that substantial payout of the capital cost of this rig will be achieved during the initial contract term. This rig complements the two 1200 horsepower AC ultra-heavy doubles we already operate in the region, and the additional two 1500 horsepower AC triple drilling rigs that Savanna is currently building. In total, we are now in the process of building 12 rigs, 11 of which are expected to commence operations in 2014. This is the largest rig-build program Savanna has undertaken in years

and includes the following: • 5 high-specification service rigs for Australia; • 3 flush-by units for Australia; • 1 1200 horsepower AC ultra-heavy double drilling rig for Canada; and • 3 1500 horsepower AC triple drilling rigs for North America. Nearly two-thirds of Savanna’s $206 million capital commitment will be directed toward these new-builds with the remainder to be spent on rig upgrades, recertifications, maintenance, spare and rental equipment, drill pipe and new field operating facilities. Other than two of the triple drilling rigs, all of the above new-builds are contracted long-term. Savanna remains confident that the two triples will be contracted prior to their delivery in Q4 2014, and is encouraged by indications of improving North American oil and gas industry activity levels in the second half of 2014. In order to ensure adequate capacity to undertake this extensive build program, Savanna also increased its total available bank facility by $50 million in May and extended the term of the loan by one year. The expansion of the credit facility provides Savanna with ample liquidity to fund anticipated capital expenditures and maintain current dividend levels. n ~ by Rick Torriero

UNDERSTANDING RIG WORK

U N D E R S T A N D I N G

Rig Work C

algary-based HR Coordinator, Naomi Wiens, joined a few of her peers and colleagues in Lacombe, Alberta for a two-day overview of drilling and well servicing operations called Understanding Rig Work. The program is designed to help admin and recruiting staff with their knowledge of our industry’s work, equip them with appropriate terminology and experience to handle field personnel inquiries, and a better understanding of rig culture so HR decisions can be best aligned with rig workers’ needs in mind. The team at Rig-n-Dig shadowed Naomi and her fellow learners as they finished their final day in Lacombe. She was generous enough to share her thoughts on the experience. RnD: Why did you sign up for the Understanding Rig Work course? NW: I heard a couple of crew coordinators talking about how much fun they had and that they learned a lot at this course. My supervisor suggested I take it as well and I jumped at the chance. I was hoping to get a better understanding of the roles on the rig and what it would be like to be on the crew. RnD: As an HR professional with Savanna, what was the extent of your site visits? Had you been to a rig before? NW: I have been to one operating Well Servicing rig with my previous company (Performance Well Servicing) and I have been on three rig tours with Savanna — one in Redcliff (only drilling rigs) and two in Lacombe. In Lacombe, I have toured both well servicing and drilling rigs. My role focuses on all Canadian non-rig employees, so I do not have many opportunities to go to the rigs. 6

RIG-N-DIG • MAY 2014

RnD: You were the only one in your group that actually had a fall arrest ticket. Why did you have this ticket? What did you think of the climb to the top of the hybrid rig? NW: I worked at a pulp mill for three summers in my hometown to pay for university. I was fortunate enough to be chosen to get my fall arrest and forklift tickets. I did not have to scale anything, just work on the edge of a roof, so the climb to the drawworks was fun. It gave me a really good aerial view of the rig configuration. I can imagine the first few days being a derrickhand you would have some sore forearms doing the climb multiple times in a day. It was a lot less scary than I was expecting, but I’m sure if I were to climb a triple, it would be a different story.

Above: Naomi gets some pre-fall arrest advice from trainer Steve Yarnell prior to climbing the hybrid rig to the monkey boards. Left: “Like changing the air filter in your car...only bigger and more expensive.”

RnD: One of the trainers mentioned that someone from a previous group had been frightened enough of the drilling floor demonstration that she left the rig. Did any aspect of the equipment operation scare you? NW: I felt nervous excitement when we started working, but not scared. On previous rig tours I have been on, the guys would start the rig and show us how loud, fast and big the operation really is. Steve and Marty provided basic instructions and threw us right in. We had to trust immediately that they were looking out for us and watching to make sure we WWW.SAVANNAENERGY.COM

UNDERSTANDING RIG WORK were completing tasks safety. It provided all of us with an idea of what our rig workers go through when they go out for their first day. I was excited to see if I had what it took to do the physical work. RnD: Does knowing the physical demands required by the job make recruiting easier or more difficult? NW: I assist with new hire and rehire orientations in Calgary and I feel like I can better answer new employees’ questions about the work and the conditions. We went through what the crew do in their roles and talked a lot about what it takes to do each job. RnD: What are your thoughts on the significant potential for injury on a rig? NW: Right away I think of the impact teamwork has on safety. The shared knowledge from experienced hands in the safety meetings, providing guidance when completing a task, and stopping someone from potentially injuring themselves are essential for our business. Without every-

one looking out for each other, we could have exponential injuries. I really appreciated that we stopped our exercise multiple times to ensure we were doing the tasks properly. As a rookie, I would have no idea of the risks associated with every task. RnD: Any closing remarks about your expe-

rience in the training course? NW: I had a great time in Lacombe with Steve, Marty, and the other participants. It was a really good experience for us as HR staff to really understand what our employees do in the field. n ~ Special thanks to Jessica Henry who helped coordinate this story.

WHAT’S HAPPENING

The Banff Centre hosted our Rig Managers’ Meeting in late May. Reps from all business units met with rig managers to share ideas on safety, training, and efficiencies. Suggestions for change were recorded at each round table discussion in the morning and the final list of ideas were tabulated and presented back in the afternoon.

Dawn Tran (Project Manager with IT in Calgary), husband Ken, and daughter Olivia welcomed little sister Samantha to the family on April 5th, 2014.

Vince Miller, Field Sup. in Redcliff (left), presents Robert Hooper with his five-year ring.

Bruins’ loss ruins office Warren Seaman, Canadian Sales and Marketing Manager for Savanna Drilling, is a die-hard Philadelphia Flyers fan, but when his favourite team lost out in the first round of the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs, crosstown rival and Canadiens fan, Mike Charron (Contracts Representative) decided to turn Montreal’s winning streak into a nightmare for Seaman… “just to rub his nose in it,” he says. With Montreal on a high from leading the Boston Bruins in the semifinals, Charron turned Seaman’s office into a P.K. Subban shrine complete with jersey, Habs’ logos, the Canadian flag, and a home-made Subban nameplate for the door. As a Habs hater, Seaman responded with, “Are you kidding me! Are you kidding me!” upon returning from his meeting. Charron then added a Habs cake to the decor celebrating their semifinals win a few days later. Is retaliation in order? Mike is pretty sure there there will be Philadelphia Flyers in his future. n WWW.SAVANNAENERGY.COM

EMPLOYEE PROFILE

KYLA HESSE Sales & Marketing Manager (CWS) based in Calgary, Alberta Q: How long have you been at Savanna and what is your role? A: I started on January 14, 2013 as a Sales Rep. I have recently moved into the role of Sales Manager for Well Servicing. Start date of March 1st, 2014. Q: What were some of the positions you held before joining Savanna? A: Before Savanna, I had worked at Nabors and Pason. I had stayed with Nabors, on the Directional Drilling side, working with Tru Vu software, which is gamma editing for the directional programs. I quickly moved over into full instrumentation on all drilling rigs, installing and then into sales. I was recruited from Nabors to go work at Pason. This was interesting for me, as I moved from a company that was looking to break into the Canadian Market to a company that holds between 92 – 94 percent of the Canadian market. Q: What is the single most difficult aspect of what you do here at Savanna? A: The most difficult thing I would say would be, trying not to sweat the small stuff. I take a lot of pride in what I do and when I see the little things not work out, it is frustrating. As those should usually be the easiest to work with and get done. Q: What hobbies or interests do you have outside of Savanna? A: I love to cook and have the odd glass of wine. Having friends and family over for food and drinks just makes everything that much better. Q: What is your favourite book? A: Pretty much anything by Mitch Albom. His book The Time Keeper is a nice short/quick read, but very interesting. Q: Who is your favourite musical artist? A: I really enjoy all kinds of music, but I love to listen to Louis Armstrong, Rolling Stones, and the Police. Q: If your younger self had a piece of advice for your future self, what would it have been? A: I would tell my younger self not to rush. Know what you want and take the time you need to enjoy the ride. Life really does go fast and it is important to enjoy every day. Q: If you won the lottery, what would you do? A: If I won the lottery, I am not really sure. I know I would take care of my family first, as they have had a lot of struggles through their life and I think they would be due for a break. Actually enjoy life for a change. After that I think I would do some of the travelling I have not been able to do.

RIG PROFILE

T

his month, HSE would like to acknowledge Rig 636, its Rig Manager, and crews for their participation in demonstrating Savanna’s Vision & Values and to actively maintain a culture of safety. This rig has been drilling by the Rocky Mountain House area for quite some time now and anyone who has worked in the area knows that there aren’t too many easy holes here. The crews have spent many hours and days tripping in and out to replace bit after bit getting chewed up due to tough formation. Though the work is hard, Rig Manager Dale Bijou does not falter from his beliefs on how a rig should be run. He is strict but fair, with his crew’s wellbeing always coming first. Safety is paramount on 636. It has been taught from the top down and there is not an option for work to be done any other way.

The attitude on 636 could be described as focused but relaxed. They are all very good at what they do, but will never pass up an opportunity to help out a fellow crew member if needed. Having each other’s back is a natural part of the culture out here. Dale’s crews are all a pleasure to work with. They are very knowledgeable, as well as committed to their careers. Their efforts show everywhere on the lease, from top to bottom. The rig is in mint condition! Having gone through multiple internal and third-party inspections, it is not hard to see why they meet or exceed all expectations. Keep up the good work Rig 636 – you are truly helping build the path for others to follow.

MEMBER STORY Vi walked downstairs to check on her daughter’s cats, when the next thing she knew, she woke up on the floor. “I thought I had fainted,” Vi said. Then she tried to stand. The right side of her body was paralyzed. When she tried to use her right arm and leg, nothing happened. With her daughter away on her honeymoon for two weeks, Vi thought, “This is not good. I can’t be trapped in my house.” Using her left arm and leg, she slowly inched her way on her back toward the front door. Then, using all of her strength, she pushed herself into a sitting position against the wall, unlocked the door, opened it, and waited. “My next door neighbour saw me when he got home and asked if I was okay. I could not talk. I could only shake my head, ‘no.’ He immediately called for an ambulance,” Vi said. “I was very lucky.” The next five weeks were spent in the hospital recovering from the stroke. After her release, she visited a cardiologist who prescribed bloodthinning medication designed to prevent future clots from forming in her brain. Soon after her visit, however, Vi noticed a fluttering sensation in her chest, as if her heart were skipping a beat. The sensation grew more persistent over the months and soon was accompanied by a racing heartbeat. She called her cardiologist, but she could not get an appointment for several months. “I ended up going to the emergency, and they did a cardioversion to jump start my heart,” Vi said. “That got it back into rhythm again.” Within a few days of her release, however, Vi’s heart again began racing. “I used to take the dog for a five to seven kilometre walk each morning but at this point I could barely walk from the house to the car,” Vi said. When she finally was able to see her cardiologist, he told her that heart arrhythmias like hers were common, and that she should “just live with it.” Vi had to rest for two hours every afternoon. “When your heart is pumping 130 beats per minute and never slows down, it’s really taxing.

“ Best Doctors gave me hope that something could be done. Once I had the Best Doctors report, everything

My arms and legs ached. It took me forever just to get myself dressed in the mornings. That was not something I could just live with,” Vi said. So she began exploring other options, including Best Doctors, a benefit that provides expert second opinions from nationally renowned, peernominated physicians, at no cost. Best Doctors gathered her medical records and sent them to a renowned cardiologist. When Vi received the expert report from Best Doctors, she learned her condition was called Persistent Atrial Fibrillation, which should be treated with special medicines designed to normalize her heart rhythm. The Best Doctors expert further recommended Vi undergo a number of medical procedures, including a catheter ablation, which is a minimally invasive procedure that cauterizes small areas of heart tissue responsible for creating abnormal heart rhythms. “I sent a copy of the Best Doctors report to my cardiologist but when I met with him, I learned that he had not read it,” Vi said. “Then he recommended I go on a medication that the Best Doctors report said would not be ideal.” So Vi decided to find a new doctor. Her new cardiologist read the Best Doctors expert report cover-to-cover and agreed with everything. A few months later, Vi underwent the catheter ablation. “My life changed the day I had that procedure,” Vi said. “I went to the hospital totally incapacitated and left the hospital feeling alive again.” Vi was around for the birth of her grandson in August 2012, and was even able to hold him and take him for long walks. She no longer needed to rest in the afternoons, and she returned to full time work two months after the procedure for the first time since suffering her stroke in 2009. “Best Doctors gave me hope that something could be done,” Vi said. “Once I had the Best Doctors report, everything fell into place.”

Training

Meet & Greet Lyndall Dorrington NHVAS Maintenance Planner

Above: Adam Gore, Rig Manager of Well Service Rig 66 during his training presentation for Site Safety Manager. Savanna Australia also completed three Situational Frontline Leadership Programs with Helgi Eyford (Team Lead, Leadership Development) who visited us from Calgary in late April for two weeks. Below: Claudia de Beer (HR Manager, AUS National) was recently featured in a Resource People magazine article on Savanna Energy training and the current challenges in the Australian market.

1. What brought you to Savanna Energy? I was offered a temp position for approximately four weeks. I’m still here and loving it. 2. Where have you worked previously in this industry? Very unlucky to work for another company on the camp management side. 3. What was your first job? I started my first job with a local Stock and Station Agent in my home town of Casino, doing a traineeship. It was very interesting as the agency still used the old Kalamazoo hand written ledger system, whilst TAFE was computerised. 4. What do you like to do when you are not working? Enjoy going to the races, rodeos, country music festivals/concerts, and catching up with family and friends… doing whatever, mainly with a beer in our hands. 5. What is your favourite colour? Purple. 6. What is the best book that you have every read? There are too many to choose from, but basically anything written by Bryce Courtenay, Rachael Treasure, or Fleur McDonald. 7. What excites you about your role at Savanna Energy? Looking forward to the challenge, but more than anything excited to be working with a great team.

Outstanding Safety Performance — The successful growth of our company is the direct result of our valued employees. Their dedication and commitment serve as a vital link in the chain which drives our operation. In recognition of that commitment, we are pleased to present Rig 65, with a two-year operation recordable incident-free award. Excellent job guys!!
