Writer: Katharine MacDonald For many, the holiday season is a time of joy. For many more, it is an inevitable source of anxiety: putting together the perfect feast, figuring out the perfect gifts for the ones you love, keeping on top of your “budget”. One tried-and-true method of keeping it simple? Secret Santa! If you've never participated in one, the idea is straight-forward: within a group of friends, family or co-workers, draw names to give (and eventually receive) just one gift each, and as the name implies, keep it secret! Here, we've surveyed Islanders to see just how much they'd spend in two typical situations: Family/Friends, and Co-workers/Classmates.
Family/Friends - Average spent on gift
$61.67 Co-workers/Classmates – Average spent on gift
$13.64 What did they have to say? "For co-workers or college friends, I would spend $20-$30 - usually a good bottle of wine." "I like getting a little variety of things - candies, ornaments, some fun little trinkets - and putting them together in a little gift basket or a cute Christmas mug." "I would probably make a few mini-cheesecakes... or if I know more about their interests, I'll look for some good books on the cheap!" "I try to make as many Christmas gifts as I can - jewellery, sewing, painting, anything crafty. I have fun making the gifts, and I think (and hope) people enjoy the personal touch."

appy New Year to you all! It's the time of year when our bodies become a priority and many of us vow to get healthy and lose those last few stubborn pounds. Fitness centres and nutrition clinics have line-ups out the door, and the media creates a healthy buzz that motivates us to stay on track. January is indeed the, “healthiest month of the year”. If you’re thinking about making a dietary change, now is the time. Stay on track by keeping a food log and planning your meals a day in advance. Create grocery lists and stick to them. Shop around the perimeter of the store since the worst foods we eat are mainly found throughout the middle aisles. Eat well and eat often. At meal times include many colourful fresh fruits and vegetables, which provide the body with plenty of vitamins and minerals. Aim to eat every three to four hours and keep healthy snacks with you at all times. Some healthy choices include: high fibre granola bars, whole grain crackers, low fat yogurt, vegetable juices and un-roasted nuts. In addition to eating a healthier diet, try to move more. Physical activity improves all areas of health and may help prevent disease. Keep your mind active and uncluttered which will help reduce stress and anxiety. Each day spend ½ hour relaxing which can help to rejuvenate your spirit. Being healthy is hard work. It requires daily dedication with lots of willpower. Aim to make 2010 your healthiest year yet. Your body is your temple, treat it with respect. It will reward your efforts through performing efficiently and preventing disease. To stay healthy all year I also encourage you to read my online nutrition blog, www.blog.rachellewood.ca, which promises to educate and inspire you to stay on the healthy track the entire year. It includes lots of healthy recipes and client success stories that will motivate you to be healthy everyday

Bonus New Years Tips: This year, be good to the environment and help it stay healthy as well. Always reduce, reuse and recycle. Drive less, take transit more or carpool. Conserve electricity by investing in energy-efficient appliances. Bring your own shopping bags to the grocery store and have plenty of reusable containers on hand to store left-overs.

It started with the music.
Cat Dickson is an alter ego. Where Catherine Ann Howatt Dickson is a modest, 47-year-old mother of four, Cat Dickson is a sassy, brassy torch
I’d first heard my friend Catherine Ann Howatt Dickson’s music when I agreed to take part in an evening where some talented singers tackled her compositions. I had gone in with low expectations, not knowing her as a songwriter. As the evening unfolded I was captivated by her soulful jazz and blues songs, interpreted by others.
singer oozing sophisticated playfulness and a mature sexuality and her age is none of your damn business, thank you.
Then Catherine Ann took the microphone, and I was stunned by her rich, textured voice and easy stage manner. I turned to my friend Hall Mills, who presents performers at his own small venue, The Dunk in Breadalbane. “Hal, how have you never had Catherine perform?” I asked. He shook his head. “Who knew?” After the show, Hal approached Catherine to do a show at The Dunk. She blanched. She had performed for friends, and for small audiences as part of a larger group, and she’d done some community theatre. But a show focused only on her and her music? She was terrified. I said, “Don’t worry. I’ll write you a character. You don’t have to go onstage as you. You can go on as an actor, playing another person.” And that was the birth of Cat Dickson, star of a new show called “Swingin’ a Cat”.
Cat Dickson comes from a late night world of smoky nightclubs and speakeasies; Catherine Ann Howatt Dickson’s world revolves around 4AM wake-up calls, child care, and her role as a partner in two businesses. It’s quite likely the two would pass one another – one returning home at the end of the day, the other just getting started.
Look, it’s not like they were starting from scratch. This was an attractive woman to start. But the goal wasn’t just “attractive”. We were going for Rita Hayworth pin-up girl drop-dead smokin’ hot gorgeous.
I knew Catherine Ann to be a talented actress and comedienne. But still, she and her character were worlds apart, and we had to bring them together. The catalyst: a photo shoot for the posters that would promote the show.
Coifed and made up, Catherine Ann slipped behind a screen and, with a little help from the girls (I was, sadly, excused), she wriggled into one of the incredibly gorgeous gown supplied by Katharina’s Bridal Boutique. When she stepped out, this team of seasoned professionals stared, awestruck.
This was where we would find Cat Dickson. Or more properly, this was where we would create Cat.
This was Cat Dickson.
Using talented artists brought into the project by Panache PEI, the work began early on a Wednesday morning in a large, vacant storage area in Summerside’s Waterfront Mall. We begged and borrowed backdrops from mall merchants. Using upturned pallets and poles, photographer Katelyn Fraser and assistant Mark Yammine jury-rigged the set to their satisfaction. While that was going on, hair stylist Emily Beck and makeup artist Savannah Belsher-MacLean worked their magic on the living canvas that began as Catherine Ann.
As the photo shoot went on, the character of Cat emerged in tiny gestures, in subtle changes of carriage, attitude, expression. What burst forth from this self-professed “simple country girl from Tryon” was remarkable indeed. It was thrilling to see Catherine Ann take hold of Cat, wrestle her to the ground, and become this person we had only imagined. And, with the photos you see here … Cat Dickson’s journey begins.

True beauty comes from within, as it begins as a thought. That thought
creates a feeling. And that feeling creates an action – how we ‘Be’.
FA N C Y C L I P Create a super cute hair piece in less than 20 minutes with recycled materials, only basic crafting skills required!
Step 1: Cut out your ‘petals’ The flower is made by layering circles of fabric and sewing them together. Cut your center circle first at a diametre of 1.5". With each circle, increase each circle by approximately 1/4". Cut about ten circles, alternating with fabric and tulle as desired. Don't worry if your circles look a bit wobbly; accuracy is not important. Step 2: Melt the edges of the petals Using a lit tealight candle, carefully melt the edges of your fabric circles. The edges should curl up slightly making a ruffled petal. Be careful as some fabrics may ignite if brought too close to the flame, and your flower petal will become blackened.
Written by Chelsea Ling Photography by Katelyn Fraser
Materials: fabric: silk, satin, tulle, crinoline, or organza scissors - tealight candle and match or lighter strong crafting glue clear beading thread beads, cameo or earring for the center felt feather(s) barrette clip or brooch back, or both
Step 3: Sew the flower Starting with the largest circle, make a couple of stitches close to the edge. Sew it to the next largest circle, again at the edge, being sure you make the petals ‘fanned’ and not on top of the other. Continue to do this with each smaller circle. After every two or three layers, reinforce the petals with stitches in the centre. Once you’ve sewn the smallest layer of petals, sew beads to the center and tie a strong knot. You can also use a cameo, or in this case, a vintage clip-on earring as the centre piece. Step 4: Glue it all together Cut a small piece of felt in a circular shape and stitch it to your flower only in the center. Tuck your feathers between the felt and flower, apply glue to the edges of your felt circle, and press down. Allow glue to dry. Glue barrette clip back to felt. To make a brooch, sew a brooch back to felt instead. Step 5: Proudly wear your hand-made clip… …and prepare yourself for a hatful of compliments! Once your friends and family see it, they’ll want one too. Luckily, these beautiful, easy-to-make clips would make lovely gifts with a personal touch!
Imagine you are looking at yourself in the mirror. Do you think you’re beautiful? Do you feel beautiful? Do you see a beautiful person smiling back at you? Chances are, if you are like most people, you've sadly said no to at least one of those questions. What we don't realize is that when we look in the mirror and focus on these negative thoughts, we are constantly affirming them. Because we tend to focus on what we don't like and what we want to change, while beating ourselves up with that chatter box voice in our head that tells us we’re not good enough, we’re not slim enough, we’re not brave enough, and on and on (and on!), we are actually creating more of what we don't want by verifying this self-belief. While at the same time we wonder in frustration, "Why can't I lose weight?”, “Why do I let food control me?” or “Why don't I speak out for myself?”. It's really no wonder that we are left stripped of confidence, self esteem and self love. Through my own personal evolution journey and having lost over 40lbs, but still not able to look in the mirror and love who I saw, I developed a self acceptance process I call "Mirror, Mirror". Now, I’m able to look in the mirror without judging eyes and I see my beauty glow from inside out. I’ve shared this breakthrough to self acceptance with women everywhere and we see amazing results. We are finally free from our own judging eyes. Isn't it time you became Free, too?
STEP 1: LET IT GO! 1. Stand in front of your mirror (preferably full length). 2. With a piece of paper and pen in hand, write everything you see – focusing on: 1. What you don't like. 2. What you want to change. 3. Now take your list and read it out loud to yourself. 4. Acknowledge that this list is all the junk that your personal chatter box voice tells you everyday. It's impossible to move forward in achieving your goals and nurturing your dreams when you are carrying all those negative beliefs about yourself. So, it's time to let all of the self-sabotaging junk go! 5. Take that list and ceremoniously rip it to shreds. 6. Great job! Now, yell out, "This is not who I am! I am letting all this junk go!” and mean it. It feels so good to declare this, doesn’t it?
STEP 2: I SEE ME!
1. Sit quietly, comfortably, and close your eyes. SEE yourself. 2. SEE your beauty from the inside; all of the glorious aspects of your character and personality. 3. SEE the rainbow of colors of your aura; the intensities in the blues, greens, purples and yellows from your energy. 4. SEE your beauty as you are and notice every fabulous feature; the incredible machine that is your body – living & breathing everyday. 5. FEEL your complete beauty. 6. SEE your uniqueness. 7. KNOW this is YOU! 8. Now open your eyes, and take out your pen and paper once more – focusing on only this: What you love about yourself. 9. Acknowledge how amazing it feels to now love and accept yourself exactly as you are. As with any new activity, practice makes perfect, even when you’re working on your own self acceptance and self esteem. So, each day, practice Mirror, Mirror, and soon you will too see your truly beautiful, confident and empowered self looking back at you through that mirror.

Originally, this article was to be about green gifts for the holiday
season. However, I trust in the notion that, equipped with your thinking cap, you can come up with such ideas on your own. So, instead of me telling you how to be a “green”-giver, let us instead delve into gift giving traditions as a lesson on how to get somewhere better than we are now. There are some who love the holidays, and others who despise. But, for the most part, they are a time of celebration and a chance to look outwards instead of in. In this way, I think we can all take a cue from holiday traditions, to show us how to enter a new stage for change. Sometimes, the holidays see us buying too much stuff, consuming too much stuff, drinking too much stuff, wanting too much stuff and throwing out too much stuff. However, take away all the 'stuff' and you are usually left with a bunch of people coming together to celebrate the idea of giving to one another, and looking forward to the possibility of a bright future in the coming new year.
18
So, I must ask - why does this only happen once a year? An age-old cry from the mouths of babes is “why can't it be the holidays everyday?”. While children usually ask this because they like the thought of getting gifts everyday and spending more time having fun that at school, they have the right idea, as kids so often do. It's about time the spirit in the season doesn't end up at the side of the curb with the holiday wrap. As we have been told, time and time again, if we want to see positive social change occurring, we all have to start by doing tiny actions on our own. A good place to start is to change the way we look at the world. During the holidays we all enjoy giving to others and helping out causes we see as important. Thus, instead of feeling like creating social change is a huge feat, we can look at the way we treat the world around us during the holiday season and see that it really is not that hard to be a good person. Do you enjoy giving friends and loved ones gifts during the holidays? Then you are fully capable of giving a little bit of yourself in order to create a bright future all year round.
7. Any keychain, magnet, or pencil with your name on it. I chose to not speak about “green” gift ideas in this article because the important part of gift giving is not in the ‘stuff’ you are handing to another person, but instead, the realization that we are capable and get enjoyment from putting others before ourselves. In order to solve any of the problems we are currently facing, personal or global, we have to look at the bigger picture that is outside our own lives and far from the present. Come New Years, the celebrations may be done, but I hope to see a day where the passion for giving and community does not stop with the passing of the season.
8. Kenny Rogers. (“Aaaww! Not Kenny Rogers again! Someone gave me him last year...”)
9. A novel by an author you’ve never heard of before that
you will end up shoving in your bookshelf and selling at a yard sale in three years.
10. A Scooby Doo Chia Pet.

From peanut butter bans in schools to scent-free public
locations, it is becoming all the more clear that we live in an age of escalating allergy problems. But aside from obvious and easily-diagnosed allergic reactions, there is a chance that other ailments we experience may be symptoms that have been brought about by more subtle allergic reactions that occur in our bodies. For example, do you suffer from chronic fatigue? Are you dealing with frequent headaches? ADD/ADHD? PMS? Asthma, Fibromyalgia, Candida, or another kind of environmental illness?
It works like this: You go in to Forever Healthy, and hopefully you may meet the lovely woman in charge, owner Patricia MacKinnon, RN DNM, L.Ac. You’ll go through a checklist questionnaire to assess the physical, psychological, and/or emotional problems you may be experiencing. Then you can book an appointment to have a NAET procedure performed on you, to begin to get to the root of what’s ailing you. NAET (Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique) is an alternative medicine technique intended as a treatment for allergies and chemical insensitivities.
Then it is entirely possible that you may be suffering from something which may have its root cause in an allergy or sensitivity.
Developed in 1983 by Devi S. Nambudripad, M.D., a California acupuncturist and chiropractor, NAET is a diagnosis and treatment based on the notion that allergies are caused by "energy blockage." It uses muscle testing to diagnose an individual's allergies/sensitivities, then treats the allergies by a combination of spinal stimulation and acupressure.
And, if this is the case, a place called Forever Healthy, located at 19 MacAleer Dr. near the Charlottetown Airport, could be your saving grace.
In the words of Ms. Patricia MacKinnon, “NAET is a painless, drugless, non-invasive approach to treating allergies – hidden or obvious. It is very safe on all age groups.”
Or not. With 50% believers and 50% skeptics, honestly, we at Panache are not sure. But, we want to make certain the health-conscious Island public knows about it – even just so you can go check it out and be the judge for yourself.
Check it out for yourself by calling (902) 569-3031, or at www.foreverhealthyinc.com to see if you might indeed be able to combat the ailments of our age, and become forever healthy.

Lasagna Party Roll-ups Written by Charlene Belsher Photography by Katelyn Fraser This mostly healthy, 'party-pretty' dish takes a little time to prepare beforehand, so it's probably best made a day or two before your event. The extra time to sit also helps meld the flavours. Makes 16 to 20 roll-ups. Ingredients: 8-10 lasagna sheets (whole wheat or white) 8oz fresh spinach 4oz mushrooms, sliced 4oz shredded Mozzarella Marinara sauce - (or pre made pasta sauce) Cheese sauce 1. Cook the lasagna sheets according to package instructions. Drain & cool. 2. Roughly chop spinach and slice mushrooms. Cook spinach in a saucepan in a few tablespoons of water for 2 minutes. Add mushrooms and cook 2 more minutes. Drain this mixture well. 3. Spread a few spoonfuls of marinara sauce in the bottom of a large, shallow casserole dish. 4. Assemble roll ups by cutting a lasagna sheet in half width-wise. Spread a spoonful of the marinara sauce on the sheet and top it with a spoonful of the spinach/mushroom mixture and a sprinkle of mozzarella. Roll up and place in the casserole dish. When roll ups are all rolled, top them with the cheese sauce. 4. Cover dish with lid or foil and bake in a preheated 350°F oven for 45 minutes and then uncover dish and heat for another 15 minutes.
