Living Embrace a healthy way of

Discover a new way of eating and exercising (and banish low-calorie and yo-yo dieting) by following in the footsteps of Clean Eating Alice.

H

i Alice. Can you tell us a little about yourself and why you decided to get into fitness? I am a bestselling author, personal trainer and actress. I’ve been blogging under the name Clean Eating Alice for over two years now. My journey into the health and fitness industry began with blogging on Instagram, when I documented my own journey of weight loss and discovered my own healthy balanced life. Having grown up developing a very poor relationship with food, and following every fad diet going in an attempt to be ‘healthy’, beginning my Instagram blog was the first time

when I took matters into my own hands instead of following someone else’s advice. What foods are on your daily menu? I eat eggs every day, and they’re an absolute staple in my diet, often having them in some form for breakfast. I try and incorporate a wide variety of vegetables into my diet too, and I add Udo’s Choice Ultimate Oil Blend to ensure I’m also getting omega 3 and 6 into my diet. My lunches and dinners centre around good sources of protein, with complex carbohydrates and some source of fats too. Having previously

lived off a lot of processed foods high in sugar, I moved away from convenience food and opted for lean meats such as chicken and turkey, and complex carbohydrates such as sweet potato and lentils. I also looked to add more fruits into my diet, and began to try foods such as avocados, and oily fish too. I didn’t overcomplicate things which I think helped me in the long-term, but I began to not only enjoy eating but also preparing my meals too. I eat well to support good gut health, but I have also found taking the Udo’s Choice Super 8 Microbiotics has been a welcome addition to my diet.

Warm harissa salmon salad with a chilli lemon dressing: INGREDIENTS: • 100g new potatoes, halved • 100g asparagus • 100g tenderstem broccoli • 100g baby spinach • A handful of fresh chopped dill • 2 salmon fillets

How often do you exercise and what does your regime involve? I train around four to five times a week and it usually revolves around strength training. I got into weight training around two years ago and I haven’t looked back. I enjoy the versatility of working with weights and I love the feeling of improving in all areas of my training. I think it is important that we try and move away from tracking progression through aesthetic changes or a number on a scale, and instead focus on how you feel as your diet and lifestyle gradually changes. What’s your best workout advice? My best workout advice is to find a way of training that you ENJOY.

Quick Questions:

There are so many ways to achieve a goal, and it’s important that you don’t follow the crowd. Find a way of getting to your goal in a way that you enjoy so that you are able to stick to it. What’s your motivation? My motivation changes a lot, but most of the time it is to continue to enjoy my training and live a healthy and balanced lifestyle. What’s your plans for the future? I want to continue to improve as a trainer and a coach, gaining experience and hopefully being a credible source of information within the fitness industry.

Favourite motivational quote: Never a failure, always a lesson. Foodie treat: Ice-cream! Favourite snack on-the-go: Almond butter. Favourite workout: Strength training. Workout playlist: Beyonce, always!

WORK IT OUT

IT’S TIME TO GET

Beach-Body Ready Be More Fit with these great HIIT tips.

W

ith the summer approaching, you may be starting to think about fine-tuning your diet and exercise regime to feel your best in the summer sun. Here are a few simple steps that you can follow to help you get a beach body you adore. Step 1 - Set realistic goals. If you have a holiday booked, you should aim to lose 1-2lbs a week – more than this is unhealthy. Don’t set crazy targets that you won’t succeed in achieving; it will only add stress to your life. Step 2 - Nourish your body. Processed foods with a long list of ingredients are bad choices for when you’re looking to get in shape. You want to

be able to recognise at least 80% of the food you are eating: it should look like it either grew in the ground, walked on the earth, or swam in the water. Step 3 - Control portion sizes. Aim for three balanced meals a day to ensure that you are getting enough of the different food groups the body needs to function. Think protein, green vegetables, carbohydrates and fats. You should only ever be mildly hungry during fat loss, but if you are incredibly hungry, then add an additional ‘thumb’ of fat sources per day. Give this protein smoothie a whirl between meals: 1 tbsp Udo’s Choice Ultimate Oil Blend 30g Protein Powder (flavoured) 250ml Milk

HIIT EXPLAINED First warm up for a few minutes at a steady level – you should be able to hold a conversation without heavy breathing. Then follow this simple structure: take the resistance up by 50% and go flat-out, as fast/hard as you can, for 10 seconds – you should barely be able to move once the 10 seconds is up. After that,

drop the resistance by 50% and do 50 seconds nice and steady, then repeat, finishing with a few minutes cool down. The first time you do this you may only be able to perform one or two bursts before wanting to hop off, but in time, you will be able to perform 20 of these bursts per session – 20 minutes VERY well spent!

Step 4 - Burn some energy. Now your diet is on track, you need to move to use up your stored body fat and encourage muscle growth. If you are new to training, then you will want to start with a whole body training approach. An effective and simple beginner’s routine would be: Day 1: Leg Press, Chest Press, Seated Pull Day 2: Active Rest (brisk walk, yoga) Day 3: Walking Lunge, Lat PullDown, Overhead Press Day 4: Active rest Aim for four sets of 15 repetitions for each exercise – the last few reps of each set should be very hard to complete. Repeat these days, aiming for three to four resistance sessions a week, increasing the resistance as and when you’re ready. Our clients get straight into a HIIT programme that melts the fat like crazy! BON VOYAGE!

YOUR ESSENTIAL

Holiday HEALTH BAG

Susie Perry Debice

Escaping for your well-deserved break is a treat to look forward to, but you need to pack wisely to avoid a few holiday health hiccups. Make sure you get the most out of your holiday by following these easy tips from nutritional therapist, Susie Perry Debice.

GUT PREPARED

According to NHS figures, a staggering 30-50 percent of Brits travelling to a developing country suffer from traveller’s diarrhoea. Even for those of us travelling closer to home, the combination of different food and water can prove a recipe for digestive upset. Packing a good highstrength probiotic, such as Udo’s Choice Super 8 Microbiotics, helps to boost defences by topping up your intestinal flora making it difficult for those unwanted tummy bugs to take hold. 10

Inspired Health / Spring/Summer 2017

BEAT THE BLOAT The last thing you need ruining your bikini body is a bout of bloating, but for some people the change in environment and eating and drinking habits can leave them with bloating and constipation. The first thing to consider is that the body may not be producing sufficient amounts of digestive enzymes, which can leave undigested food particles that can create gas and bloating. Taking a natural digestive enzyme supplement such as Udo’s Choice Digestive Enzyme Blend with meals helps provide almost instantaneous relief. If constipation becomes an issue, then drink plenty of water and top-up on probiotics to help ‘soften’ and regulate bowels.

BON VOYAGE!

HEALTHY SKIN FROM WITHIN

SUMMER SORES An estimated 20 percent of people in the UK suffer from frequently recurring cold sores, caused by the herpes simplex virus, for which sunlight, sunburn and dehydration can all act as triggers causing the virus to resurface. If you are one of these people, then make sure you pack some Manuka Health Lip Balm to moisturise and protect dry, chapped and sore lips.

NATURAL BEAUTY

You might not have the time to fit pampering into your busy weekly schedule but let’s face it; you’ll have plenty of ‘me-time’ on holiday! Sun, sea, sand and chlorine can frazzle your hair, skin and lips. Pamper your scorched skin with Manuka Health Body Lotion which is a light and non-greasy lotion. It contains manuka honey, aloe vera and argan oil which are renowned for their skin rejuvenating properties and also help protect against sun damage.

We all love to dream of lazing by the pool with a favourite book and cool summer tipple, but feelings of poor body confidence can start to creep in. The truth is that ‘real’ body confidence starts with beautiful skin, and no amount of expensive moisturiser can come close to the benefits of feeding your skin from within. Each skin cell membrane is partly made from essential fats. Omega 3 and omega 6 essential fats keep cell membranes smooth and soft. If your diet is naturally lacking in nuts, seeds and fish (particularly oily fish), then this might be reflected in dry or problematic skin. Before you bake your skin under the summer sun, it’s a good idea to feed it by topping up on those all-important omega oils. Supplement with Udo’s Choice Ultimate Oil Blend: this combination of omega 3 and 6 is delicious drizzled over salad or stirred into soup or yoghurt.

HORMONE HEAVEN

TAKE THE STRESS

Out of PMS

Don’t suffer in silence every month; instead follow these great natural ways to combat PMS.

P

MS can range from being psychological or physical, but there is one thing in common: it can be awful to experience and can make everyday activities unbearable. Our nutritional therapist Angela Heap explores the symptoms of PMS and looks at natural ways to combat it. What is PMS? Premenstrual Syndrome is largely governed by female hormones, and originates from the fluctuations in the key hormone, progesterone, dropping towards the end of the cycle. This drops in a normal way in most women, but in some women when progesterone – the ‘happy, feel-good hormone’ – begins to drop, physical and emotional symptoms can manifest. This can happen anywhere from seven to 10 days before a woman starts her menstrual cycle again. As symptoms are very different for everyone that suffers from it, it can be really difficult to diagnose. What we do

12

Inspired Health / Spring/Summer 2017

know is that this is now a recognised condition and it affects up to 80% of women from their teenage years into their 40s. Symptoms Physically PMS has a range of symptoms such as: • Water retention • Decreased sex drive • Stomach cramps • Tender breasts • Headaches • Acne • Bloating or weight gain • Digestive issues • Food cravings • Poor sleep Emotional Symptoms • Irritability • Poor concentration • Lowered confidence • Difficulty coping • High stress • Irritability • Tendency to anxiety or panic • Low mood or mood swings

Help Reduce The Symptoms As women, we will follow a regular cycle, whether we want to get pregnant or not! As a specialist in hormones and pregnancy, I think there is great value in following our cycle as over the years we have stopped listening to its message. When as women we are ‘firing on all cylinders’, so to speak, it can help motivate us, drive us in our work, and also help us to withstand stress and pain. During each phase of the cycle, something new is apparent which, used in the correct way, can unleash a wealth of creativity and passion! From a nutritional basis, PMS can largely been seen as a deficiency, and manifestations, either emotional or physical towards the end of the cycle, are a sure sign key nutrients are running low. Empty food (food with very little nutritional value) can ‘fill’ the body up and can be detrimental to health as vital nutrients are used up in the process to get rid of them, depleting an already-low nutrient base. Eating anti-nutrients such as fast or canned food, caffeinated, alcoholic and carbonated drinks and high-sugar foods can exacerbate the issue. With PMS, cutting these out and replacing with whole foods, a diet high in protein and good fats (the basis for all hormones), followed by huge amount of fibre in nuts, seeds and avocados and ‘eating the rainbow’ (in plant-based foods), will help keep hormones happy! What nutrients help PMS? B vitamins and essential fats are a girl’s best friend if she suffers from PMS. I suggest you try CleanMarine For Women as it is a unique blend of essential B vitamins, soy isolates, vitamin D and omega 3 fats in a phospholipid base. Together with some lifestyle suggestions like proper sleep, regular exercise and good food, this regime will get your hormones revving up again and in no time at all you will be in hormonal heaven!

BODY TALK

THAT

Gut Feeling Nutritional therapist Angela Heaps explains why you always need to listen to your gut.

G

ut health is of the utmost importance when we start our journey into health. Why? Because a healthy gut equals a healthy body! We automatically think of it as just digesting our food, but did you know it is vital in terms of helping us to ‘ detoxify’ harmful waste and chemicals; as well of getting rid of excess hormones? It is also vital for mental wellbeing, energy, and also immune function. How To Keep Your Gut Happy Like the rest of your body, your gut needs a workout and can get lazy if you don’t help it to work. Overprocessed food causes it to slow down. The best way to support your gut and digestion is to eat a diet rich in fibre. The best sources of fibre are vegetables and whole grains. A recent UK recommendation is to up your vegetables to 10 servings of fruit and veggies daily. The Mediterranean diet is deemed the best in the world as it adheres to these principles and in some areas of the Mediterranean, they have more people over the age of 100 than anywhere else on the planet! If you want to eat like a Mediterranean, add some oats, fibrous veggies and whole grains to your daily diet, as well as flax and chia seed. Aim to have around 20 grams of fibre to help foster a happy gut!

14

Inspired Health / Spring/Summer 2017

Dustbins Or Elimination Machines? Fibre can really help the gut to remove chemicals and waste products more quickly, while food that has high amounts of pectin work with fibre to soothe the gut: pectin is found in things like apples, plums and pears. Also a chemical component in food from the brassica family – calcium D glucorade– is a super hormone blaster, which helps the body rid itself of free circulating excess hormones like oestrogen when it has been used. Help keep your gut happy by eating lots of cabbage, cauliflower and kale. The bonus is these veggies are also high in magnesium which is really needed to move or slow gut transit. Microbiome: A New Gut Frontier! It was suggested early in the 20th century by Dr Elie Metchnikoff, a colleague of Louis Pasteur, that ‘all disease begins in the gut’ and the way the gut bacteria interact is critical to disease. Dr Metchnikoff was given a noble prize for his work on gut flora in 1908, and it’s only taken this long for us to catch up! Microbiotics help us to balance our immune system, support more balanced bodily functions, and reduce inflammation. The good bacteria also protect us from all sorts of attacks; they are a bit like the MI5 of our bodies, thwarting attacks without us even knowing it!

You can get good bacteria from specific food, such as yoghurt and fermented yoghurt called kefir (something that has been used in Europe for thousands of years). Also food like fermented cabbage, pickles and veggies help us to balance our gut microbiome. Or you could consider taking a supplement such as Udo’s Choice Super 8 Microbiotics which contains 42 billion bacteria at manufacture and 31 billion at expiry.

YOUR HEALTH QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY OUR NUTRITIONAL THERAPIST SUSIE PERRY DEBICE. Q. My child has trouble remembering instructions or spelling words? What can I do to help improve his memory? A. This is not an uncommon question that I get asked! There are many nutrients that are important for brain development and function and the ones that make a real impact are zinc and omega 3. It’s relatively easy to get adequate zinc into a child’s diet, but getting enough omega 3 is often a totally different story. Many children aren’t keen on eating fish so

supplementing omega 3 really does become a priority. Cleanmarine For Kids provides an excellent source of omega 3 oil without the offputting fishy repeat, making it an acceptable choice for children. The other great benefit of krill oil over fish oil is that it’s highly effective at much lower doses so you don’t have to take as much! Q. How to choose the right spirulina brand and ensure it comes from a clean source? A. The problem with some (often cheaper and non-organic) brands of spirulina is that they could contain unknown or potentially harmful contaminants. By opting for a reputable brand, you can

Susie Perry Debice

rest assured that the spirulina is certified organic meaning that it has been grown and harvested under clean and ethical conditions. Try to choose spirulina, such as One Nutrition Spirulina, that has undergone a gentle and controlled drying process which ensures that many of the valuable nutrients, enzymes and phytonutrients have remained intact to deliver a superior quality product. Q. I’m a big fan of manuka honey, but I am confused with all the different ratings. I have been recently introduced to the MGO rating system. What is MGO and what do the different levels mean? A. Yes the rating systems can be a little confusing, but once you get the hang of it you can quickly spot a good from a sub-standard manuka honey. MGO Manuka Honey is labelled based on the minimum Methylglyoxal content (mg/kg) it contains. Professor Henle and his team were the first to document that methylglyoxal contributes to the unique characteristics of manuka honey (which sets it apart from other honeys). Prior to this discovery, the term ‘unique manuka factor (UMF)’ was used to denote the special activity unique to manuka honey. Manuka Health was the first company in the world to certify manuka honey according to methylglyoxal content, the natural compound in manuka honey.
