Page 1

THE ESCALATING POLYHOUSE FARMING IN INDIA Polyhouse farming is a technique of protected agriculture. Polyethylene plastic is used to cover the entire structure under which the farming takes place. It enables to cultivate high-value crops (horticulture) in the structure. Eatables like Papaya, Strawberry, Cabbage, Bitter Gourd, Capsicum, Radish, Cauliflower, Chili, Coriander, Onion, Spinach, Tomato and flowers like Carnation, Gerbera, Orchid can also be easily grown.

COMPLETE CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM

Certain polyhouses are naturally ventilated and some remain under a complete climate control system with motorized screens and ventilators. The protected cultivation under Polyhouse is gaining more importance these days and proves to be beneficial to the farmers since it enabled off season cultivation of vegetables/fruits, which in-turn enabled the farmer to have better price realization. It also extends the life

cycle of the crops by providing a controlled environment for the crops. Drip irrigation is mainly employed in polyhouse farming. THE INITIAL INVESTMENT It is gaining much-awaited importance in India. The initial investment is high i.e approx. Rs. 33 lakh/Acre, but the benefit-cost ratio is very high if everything takes place properly. The government is providing a support system in the form of subsidies to the farmers who are practicing polyhouse farming. The Telangana government is giving about 90% subsidy to the farmers under polyhouse. Features like walkin environmental chambers are being introduced to make the process smoother and more farmerfriendly.
