Named by one of our younger volunteers, Mr. Whiskers is one of two tiger-striped cats that was picked up by animal control in July. The owner abandoned the cats to her roommate, who then called us. Mr. Whiskers’ sibling and best friend, Captain Underpants, just got adopted so now it is his turn. Mr. Whiskers is usually the first kitty to respond to the sound of kitty treats in their Ziploc bag. He can't wait to see what tasty morsels are coming his way! Not only does he have a healthy appetite, this one-year-old adores children, loves to be held and rocked like a baby or have his belly rubbed while stretching. His adoption fee of $50 covers his neuter surgery, rabies and booster vaccinations, flea preventative, as well as wormer.

Meet Wilbur

Baby is still a little shy in her new surroundings, but she is gaining confidence daily. Her owner had her a year and stated that she is now allergic to her. Baby is spayed, three to four years old, litter box trained and great with children. The owner stated that she doesn't like other pets (both cats and dogs). The staff has noticed that when there is a cat loose in the front cat room, running, jumping and playing, Baby just watches with those expressive green eyes but doesn't show any aggression or frustration. Baby's adoption fee has been waived making her free to a loving and inside home.

Wilbur was a stray dog found mid-August on State Road 244. We named this sweetheart Wilbur and he knows the command for sit, loves having his belly rubbed, craves attention and cries when you leave him. It has got to be hard on our herding dog because he has vision issues. He bumps into things but we feel that he can make out shapes. He needs a companion who loves to love and is willing to give him patience and time. Through the generosity of others, his fee has been waived and we will schedule for his neuter surgery, rabies/booster vaccinations, wormer, Home Again Microchip and registration. We are looking for the best fit for our four-to-six year old boy as he would appreciate a home with a fenced in yard so he can't wander off. DON’T FALL FOR THE DIY OR QUICK PRECESSES. THEY SIMPLY WIILL NOT LAST!

Three Easy Ways to Register

Registrations for recreation, athletics and special events may be made in the Parks office, by phone with credit card payment or by mailing in a registration form with payment. Registrations will be processed as they arrive and will be handled on a first come/first serve basis unless otherwise noted. Signing up for one class does not guarantee a space in the next class session if the class is ongoing. You must pre-register for each individual class session. Registration forms may be found in the Parks office All fees must be paid before services can be given!

Refund Information

Once a program begins it is not policy to refund enrollment fees. If an instructor becomes ill and the class must be canceled and not rescheduled, refunds will be made.

Do you know where we are located? We are located in the Carl McNeely Civic Center building (the old Junior-Senior High). If you are coming from Colescott Street turn left on Meridian Street, then straight to Second Street. Turn left on Second Street - go one block up to South Tompkins Street turn right, our entrance will be on the right hand side of the road.

Cancellation of Programs

Programs listed will be offered unless the number enrolled fall under the minimum that is listed. After programs are underway, cancellations will occur only if the instructor is sick and unable to attend or the weather causes us to cancel. To check on cancellation of classes, please call 392-5128. To check evening activities to see if a cancellation has occurred call the Parks office before 4:00pm on the day of the program. Please enter extension 18 if it is after 4:00pm.

Photo Policy

If photos are taken of participants in a class, during a special event or at our park facilities, they are for parks and recreation usage only and may be used in the park brochures, flyers or on the parks & recreation website.

Meetings are held the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month at the Carl McNeely Civic Center at 4:15pm. The meetings are open to the public.

What is Senses? Senses is an exciting and safe alternative to typical playgrounds. It is designed especially A Service of The Arc for sensory recreation. Senses is great for young children of all abilities but is particularly beneficial for those who have Autism, are on the Autism Spectrum, have Sensory Processing Disorders, ADHD, Down’s syndrome & Asperger’s syndrome. The gym is very beneficial to all children but is especially good for those who have special needs. What is the cost? Thanks to several grants from the Blue River Community Foundation, The Arc of Shelby County and the Shelbyville VC Aktion Club we are able to offer sessions at a modest per-session fee. The fees will help with administration costs, replacement of current equipment and help us keep the gym operating with current and new items well into the future.
