01. The Toilets Are Heroes For UIA Competition Time: 07/2019-08/2019 Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh Category: Public building/Service building Type: Group Work - Yuyang Sun, Xuejun Bai, Han Li, Xinyu Yang Director: N/A

Introduction: Dhaka is the place, most densely populated city, which has a lot of the urban problems caused by the lack of public toilets. These problems are complex and serious . In particular, the harm to women is particularly serious. We hope to design a public toilet system in line within the development of the city in Dhaka, so that women in Dhaka can have a safer toilet experience, and through this system, urban planning can be improved and a good future urban development guide can be provided. Bangladesh Dhaka is the capital and largest city of Bangladesh. It is one of the largest and most densely populated cities in the world, with a population of 18.2 million people. However, there are only 17 usable toilets in this city. So, rich or poor, everyone in Dhaka has to hold a full bladder on the road at some point in their lives.

Women without Toilets The lack of toilets for girls in secondary schools are major factors in disproportionate rate of absence and dropout of adolescent girls. Girls in secondary school said when they went out in the open to defecate, local boys stared at them, made threats, threw bricks and stabbed them.

According to the WHO and Unicef, women without toilets at home are vulnerable to sexual violence when travelling to and from pubilc facilities or open fields.

PROTOTYPE OF THE DEFENSIBLE SPACE What can architecture do for the safety of public toilets? Because the size of toilet is a very limited as a public building, and usually exists in densely populated areas. Is it possible to use the most basic elements of architecture to improve the safety of the space experience? Therefore, we use the most basic elements such as walls, steps, lights, pillars and so on to discuss the passive safety of the space.

[5] |UIA CUP|

ELEMENTS OF ARCHITECTURE By using the left-hand components and the following defensive space principles, the toilet will be able to limit the convenience of crime, make the criminal process easy to be discovered or stopped, and increase the criminal costs. Ultimately, the incidence of crime will be achieved, and we can reduce the fear of environmental experience and reduce the quality of living environment.

TERRITORIALITY Suppress the occurrence of criminal behavior against women by clarifying the boundaries of the field. The stronger the sense of the field, the stronger the control of the space by the female user; on the contrary, the greater the psychological pressure of the criminal subject to commit crimes in the space, the effective reduction of the possibility of the criminal subject committing the criminal act.

MONITORING & CONCEALMENT People have an unsafe feeling about things that they can't see and spaces that they can't control. The space we designed will allow women to monitor the outside of the toilet while conveniently hiding inside. Monitoring and concealment can effectively improve people's ability to control the environment and enhance their sense of safety.

ILLUMINATION The light attracts people's attention and forms a natural surveillance of the surrounding residents' space around the toilet. And use the light to strenthen the territoriality of the building and enhance the control of space. Finally, we will build a series of toilets in the form of arrays, which will make it easier for women to call and locate when they are in danger to reducing the possibllity of being killed.

DIVERSION Unlike ordinary toilets, we design toilets that divert men and women to the greatest extent, and women and men will not have rooms for common use. It'll enhance women's sense of the territoriality and improve women's sense of security on the psychological level.

Introduction: With the accelerating process of urbanization, people’s demand for energy is increasing day by day. The existing oil, coal, and other energy can only be used for about 50 years, and their combustion will bring serious air pollution problems, such as urban haze, so the discovery and exploitation of new energy is imminent. In addition, the problem of marine garbage is becoming more and more serious. In order to solve the energy and environmental problems to the greatest extent, the topic had been set up by us. PROCESS IDEAS Pathways

Replicating element

Previously this building able to be passed by the car. We proposed to forbid the accessibility of the car into this building. Allowing the club and hotel to be exclusively accessed by its customer. Context: The passage to the hotel different from the passage from the area C in order to break the monotonity of the long structures. The moduled arch were rotated 45 degrees and intersected perpendicularly to give new space underneath Marina club should be open and appealing together. The sense of welcome were granted by the use of wider gap of arch in the entrance area.
