EL SALVADOR Save the Children has been implementing programs in El Salvador since 1979.We work with partners and allies in the most vulnerable areas of the country.Through our flagship program,“First Steps to Success”, we work with children to achieve their full development from conception through adolescence, by providing protection, health, nutrition, education and early childhood interventions.

Education: we promote access to early childhood and primary education. We support technically the system so they provide quality education and ensure children learn as expected to their grade.We also advocate to increase investment on education and promote access to education in emergencies.

Protection: Save the Children strengthens protection systems for children living in violent and exploitative environments.We work towards eliminating all forms of physical and humiliating punishment in homes and schools and also strengthening the resilience and the capacity to manage crisis in vulnerable children. Poverty Reduction: we advocate for policies to reduce child poverty, and implement programs with a focus on livelihoods so adolescents can develop the skills to make a successful transition to adulthood. Maternal and Child Health: we work to eliminate child mortality from preventable causes, with a focus on preventing pre-term children and adolescent pregnancy. We also promote equitable access to health services. School Health and Nutrition: children lead the intervention to improve the health and nutrition practices at the school.We prevent undernourishment but also child obesity and ensure a basic set of health services are available at schools. Disaster Risk Management and Humanitarian Response: we care for unaccompanied migrant children and intervene in emergency situations related to food security.We also strengthen the capacity of institutions and communities to respond to disasters.

GOAL To prevent irregular child migration by promoting informed decisions related to migration, and to strengthen community social links to guarantee a full reintegration of returned children. And, to ensure a comprehensive model of attention for returned children by including alternative family care options when it is not possible for them to return to their communities of origin.

GOAL To scale-up the HEART methodology developed by Save the Children an include it in the national curriculum; this, in order to promote a culture of peace and safe environments at schools by strengthening resilience and crisis management.
