Tips For Having Successful Conferences With Your Child’s Teachers by Sherry M. Ryan, BA, MS

Parent teacher conferences are often a source of anxiety for everyone. Even seasoned teachers have qualms about meeting with parents. Sometimes what are supposed to be proactive discussions deteriorate and leave one or both parties frustrated. Over the years I’ve witnessed the sabotage of conferences by many well intentioned parents. There are, however, many strategies to ensure a more positive experience. Here are some suggestions to assist parents with conferencing. PRIOR TO THE CONFERENCE 1. Pay attention to the homework your child is doing; note areas of difﬁculty or extreme ease. Review returned tests and assignments; note strengths and weaknesses. Listen to your child’s likes and dislikes about his classroom while neither afﬁrming or disregarding his perspective. Keep in mind children often present events and statements out of context. They also learn early on which kinds of issues get your undivided attention and will use them, real, imagined or exaggerated to keep you in a state of alert. 2. Write down your questions and concerns so you can present them in

an orderly, timely fashion. Separate academic from social issues.

For example, instead of saying “You’re giving too much homework” try asking “How long should my child be spending on homework nightly?” If your child far exceeds the recommended length of time, then ask “What can we do to help my child finish his work in a shorter time?’’ Often homework issues are due to difficulty with a specific skillset,organization, focus, or it can be as simple as the child needing a quiet place free of distraction in which to do the work. Teachers can offer many helpful strategies if given the opportunity. 11. Partner with the teacher in whatever plan he recommends. If the teacher suggests more reading, take your child to the library or bookstore. Read to or with your child. Many times parents discontinue this practice after the primary years. Make reading a priority in both your lives by setting a family reading time and discussing books at meal times. Ask your child to relate the story to you in their own words. If necessary, offer a reward for reading a certain number of books each month. If the teacher asks you to keep your child on track with their schoolwork, do make homework and studying a priority. Check that work is done completely and legibly. Ask to review the assignment before T.V. or another activity is allowed. Do not over schedule your child with extra-

curricular activities or family outings on school nights. I’m appalled at the number of students who tell me they do not begin to do homework until 9pm or later. 12. If you have a concern over a conﬂict your child is having with a classmate. try to be objective and non-confrontational when raising the issue. For instance, saying “Joey is always picking on my child and he never gets in trouble” is not as effective as asking “Are you aware that my child and Joey are not getting along?” “What do you think is at the heart of their conﬂict?” and “What can we all do to resolve this?”

Teachers are bound by ethics and conﬁdentially policies not to comment on another student’s progress, needs, behavior or family. A separation, divorce, loss of job, death of a loved one or pet can affect a child ‘s academic performance and social interactions. Asking a child to keep secret a change in the family structure creates an undue burden and additional stress. Finally, let the teacher know you appreciate his efforts and are happy to meet anytime to discuss your child. Positive proactive parents will garner the most cooperation and attention for their children.

13. Remember that the teacher spends as much or more time each day with your child as you do. The teacher has an opportunity to view your child in a totally different setting than home. Therefore, you should expect there to be differences in his behavior or attitude. Avoid being defensive if the teacher relays an
