This annual Food and Drink Festival is being held at Lochinch Castle as part of Scottish Food and Drink Fortnight and Flavour Fortnight. There will be a wide range of stalls from local producers featuring the best from the region including home baking, cakes, pork, bacon, beef, cheeses, real ales, jams and chutneys, fruit and vegetables. The Lochinch Castle Food and Drink Festival will include product tastings and samples, as well as local food and drink demonstrations. The third of House o’ Hill’s Beer & Music Festivals, featuring up to 20 Scottish real ales, including Sulwath Brewers. Under the expert tuition of Penninghame’s chefs you will discover how to get the most out of fresh, simple, wholesome ingredients and ways to really bring your meals to life. Penninghame House Cooking School is being joined by Wyllie McCulloch of Ferry Fish for an evening celebrating fish and shellfish. Wyllie will be showing what to look for when buying fish, how to tell if it’s fresh, how to fillet and how to make a fish stock. You will get the chance to try filleting before watching one of the Penninghame chefs demonstrate how to make delicious dishes from the fish and shellfish. Then it will be your turn for some hands-on cooking! When the cooking is finished you’ll eat what you’ve cooked, relaxing with a glass of wine in the dining room. Fish Night costs £35 per person. Each Saturday during Flavour Fortnight the team at John D Owen & Son will be putting togther 3 course meals in stages - starters the first weekend, mains the second and then desserts. Deli Day on the 25th August will show you some easy ways to use local produce to create an antipasti platter using produce from the likes of Marrbury Smokehouse and Galloway Farmhouse Cheese. Meaty Mains on 1st September will introduce you to exceptional local meats, such as saltmarsh lamb, black spot pork and local beef. As well as recipe ideas you can try some of John D Owen’s chef-made ready meals, created using local meats. Sweet Treats on 8th September will round off your 3 week, 3 course menu with ideas for using local produce to create delicious desserts, such as meringues made from local eggs.

Douglas Lisi of L’Aperitif in Stranraer travels to the home of Galloway Farmhouse Cheese for two demonstration events in the newly converted Mill. Galloway Farmhouse Cheese produce an award winning range of cheeses with organic milk from their flock of dairy sheep, as well as goat’s milk cheeses and organic cow’s milk cheese. The cheeses will play a central role in Douglas’ demonstration menus, along with a selection of other local produce. On Monday 27th August the demonstrated dishes will have a distinctly sweet flavour, while the evening event on 6th September will have a more savoury slant. You’ll be warmly welcomed into the Mill with platters of cheese and local nibbles and a glass of wine in relaxed surroundings before Douglas cooks up a wide selection of easy-to-prepare recipes which you will be invited to taste. Allan Watson will take you through the smoking process, from the fresh seafood caught by Allan each morning to the gentle smouldering of whisky cask sawdust. Allan will explain how his daily catch is prepared, salted and smoked, and he’ll explain the differences between mass-produced smoked foods and the traditional methods that imbue the produce with such wonderful flavour. Galloway Smokehouse is open throughout Flavour Fortnight from 9am5.30pm Monday to Saturday, 10am-4pm on Sundays.

Come and forage in Galloway, then join expert forager Mark Williams of Galloway Wild Foods and lots of friends for a party on our beautiful, bountiful coast. Great wild food, like-minded people, live music and foraged tipples. Round up your friends and family then come and explore and meet some lovely people! Like-minded people from across Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, Britain and further afield are encouraged to come and explore, share food, exchange information and party together, enjoying a great night in a beautiful spot with lovely people. This is not a teaching event. It is intended as a chance for foragers from ‘novice’ to ‘expert’ to spend a day independently exploring Galloway, gathering fungi, plants and shellfish as they go. You can ‘forage’ in some of the region’s fantastic food shops too if you want, and bring whatever interesting ingredients take your fancy. Then meet up at Carrick shore from around 5pm to build a fire, share food and have a party. Galloway Wild Foods is proposing a beautiful spot suitable for paddling, swimming and gathering plants and shellfish, timed for a low tide. Please note, the precise location may need to be altered, but all updates will be posted on the Galloway Wild Foods website beforehand. Bring: food (foraged or otherwise), equipment or know-how with which to cook it, drink, chat, instruments, stories etc that you are prepared to share. One of Cream o’ Galloway’s popular events that runs every day throughout the season. The Ice Cream Experience gives you the opportunity to taste ten of Cream o’ Galloway’s 30 ice cream flavours. During the tasting you will hear how the luxury ice-cream is produced, how flavours are created and why Cream o’ Galloway’s peppermint choc-chip isn’t green. From the viewing gallery overlooking the production area you’ll see the equipment used and learn about the process from raw ingredients to finished product. Please note, this event usually takes place in an upstairs room. If you would like to participate but you are unable to climb stairs, please advise in advance as the event can sometimes be held downstairs.

Join a half mile walk around Rainton Farm to see the new dairy and find out what goes on behind the scenes at the farm, home of Cream o’ Galloway. Meet the dairy cows on their way in for milking and hear about the radical developments underway to make this farm the most welfare friendly dairy farm - in the world! The tour finishes with your choice of ice cream back at the visitor centre. The route is suitable for those with buggies or wheelchairs. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Cream o’ Galloway has a revolutionary new dairy that could help to transform the dairy industry. This event gives you a rare look behind the scenes of Rainton Farm’s radical new approach to milking. You’ll meet at the visitor centre and take a 5 minute walk to the new dairy to watch as the cows are milked in the new ‘high welfare’ milking parlour. You’ll spend an hour at the dairy then head back to the visitor centre for a delicious breakfast of local produce.

Be the creator of your very own dream ice cream at this great fun ice cream making event. Working in groups of two or three people you will create your very own ice cream from scratch. Starting off with the raw ingredients of milk, cream and sugar you’ll choose your own flavour combinations from a range of Cream o’ Galloway ingredients - what about Chocolate & Sticky Toffee Chunk or Honey & Gingerbread? The magic happens in the freezing machines and while your ice cream is being made you’ll head up to the Cream o’ Galloway ice cream factory to learn about how luxury ice cream is made on a larger scale. You’ll then decant your very own ice cream into pots and enjoy the fruits of your labour. Ready Steady Freeze is suitable for anyone aged 5 or older.

For Flavour Fortnight the Food for Thought topic looks at what Cream o’ Galloway is best known for, producing luxury ice cream. The Earth’s Crust Bakery is a small artisan bakery set in Laurieston village producing slowly fermented breads to achieve outstanding flavour and texture with no artificial additives. Head artisan baker, Tom will introduce you into the mysteries of sourdough culture. You will make your own sourdough starter and learn how to look after it. You’ll then get to take this starter home and use it to make your own sourdough bread. This intensive half day course will lead you through the artisan bread making techniques used in The Earth’s Crust Bakery, sharing bread making tips and advice and explaining the principles and benefits of slow fermentation. As an essential part of your introduction to artisan baking you will mix, fold, shape and bake a variety of loaves based on Earth’s Crust recipes. You will then take home your baked loaves, sourdough starter, the recipes used and most importantly the knowledge and confidence to enjoy baking beautiful artisan bread at home for many years to come. On Saturday 1st September you’re invited to take part in a tour of Irvings Bakery, with demonstrations showing how the different machines and processes work. More than 100 people packed out the Sulwath Brewery Tour during Flavour Fortnight last year so if you weren’t able to make it, this is a great opportunity to see behind the scenes of this award winning local brewery. Discover the secrets of artisan cheese making at Loch Arthur, BBC Radio 4’s Best Food Producer 2011. Barry Graham will talk you through how Loch Arthur’s famous cheeses are made and you’ll discover some of the secrets that make them so very special.
