This calendar was produced by the Indonesia-Australia Forest Carbon Partnership (IAFCP) for its Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership (KFCP) program and the local communi es in the project site. It presents some simple messages around the environment and landscape related to the dierent mes of the year. It also includes quotes from several community members involved in the project. Messages and illustra ons were developed in consulta on with local community members and KFCP teams to present a fun and informa ve view of life in the peatland areas of Kapuas District.

The price of rubber latex is higher in the form of lumps rather than slabs. The rainy season is the best Ɵme for this higher quality rubber culƟvaƟon. Community members should parƟcipate in the Musyawarah Desa during this period to ensure that their needs and aspiraƟons are brought to the aƩenƟon of the local government and included in the Village Development Plan. Through KFCP’s Farmer Field Schools we have been trained in the techniques of rubber latex culƟvaƟon to ensure we get a high quality. Ibu JayanƟ, Katunjung Village.

The role of women in the family and community is important to enhance household resilience and strengthen livelihoods from sustainable farming, gardening and fishing. The Reducing Emissions from DeforestaƟon and Forest DegradaƟon (REDD+) program has been empowering many women-headed households in the village. It has helped those who do not have the means to work their land by providing technical support and capital. More and more women are coming to the Village MeeƟngs. I have personally contributed through my role as treasurer in the AcƟvity ImplementaƟon Team (TPK)." Ibu Endang, Tumbang Mangkutup Village.

How about exploring alternaƟve means of livelihoods through agroforestry? Legume cover crops can provide addiƟonal food opƟons for the family and a source of income. Crops such as beans can be planted around rubber trees and fishponds. Legumes are good for naturally ferƟlising the soil. I fully support the Gaharu culƟvaƟon training that was facilitated by KFCP with the Ministry of Forestry in November, 2013. Farmers learnt skills that were ground-breaking, and it was interesƟng for the community to understand culƟvaƟon techniques using Legume cover crops that are planted in and around rubber plantaƟons. CulƟvaƟng latex everyday will result in lower quanƟƟes and quality of latex. The best culƟvaƟon technique is to tap no more than half a circle around the tree, every two to four days. The quality of your rubber latex depends on the purity of the latex concentraƟon. Do not mix the latex with too much water or other contaminants, as this will reduce its selling price. Follow the guidelines provided by the relevant authoriƟes – the beƩer the quality, the higher the price. This is the right Ɵme to prepare for the upcoming dry season when forest and peatland fires can occur. Fire Patrol Teams in the village need to be vigilant and work together to prepare fire exƟnguishing tools and water points Through the KFCP Rubber Field Schools, we visited rubber factories and learned about the characterisƟcs of high quality latex. I remember one of the factory representaƟves explaining to us that they looked for highly concentrated latex, not latex that was mixed with other things Ibu NurhayaƟ, KaƟmpun Village.

Beware of fire in the forest and peatlands triggered by ‘slash and burn’ pracƟces! Follow the instrucƟons from the local government and customary leaders and immediately report to them when you see any uncontrolled fires. Wild fires not only damage the environment, but are dangerous to our health. Village leaders are responsible for imposing rules about fire management so as to reduce the number of fire incidents. I’ve been involved in KFCP as the head of the fire team for Katunjung Village where villagers were trained to prepare for fire. This workshop involved the community, government and Adat representa ves discussing methods of preven ng fire. KFCP’s ini a ve in preparing for forest fires through village fire teams is an effec ve technique to increase the community’s awareness of fires. This is especially important for the peatlands. Preven on is proven to be much more cost effec ve than mi ga on of fire. Pak Sugiar, Katunjung Village

Fishing with the use of electric currents is a criminal offence as it damages the river ecosystem. This method of fishing destroys the fish eggs and small fish and prevents the regenera on of fish popula ons in the waterways. Understanding how to manage forests and their resources in a healthy way is essenƟal to ensuring sustainability of the ecosystem which has been the source of livelihoods for the communiƟes throughout the Kapuas River Bismart Ferry Ibie, forestry expert from the University of Palangkaraya.
