INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

Prison is “A mechanism in which inmates are forcibly confined and denied a variety of freedoms and provided with a suitable environment and support for betterment in behavior under the authority of the state.” The rising recidivism rate in Bangladesh suggests that the rehabilitation system in the prison is failing. During the data survey of the current prison situation in Bangladesh, it is found that around 57% of inmates are staying in the prison for the second or third time which indicates the failure of the rehabilitation program to make inmates strong enough to stay far from committing a crime.

According to physical and data surveys, the interconnected issues of the prisons in Bangladesh are (1) Over Population, (2) Un-wanted Mixing of different types of inmates, (3) Un-hygienic environment, and (4) Wasteful Youth as 57% of inmates are in the age group of 18-34. The objectives of the Project were 1. Zonal Integration: The classification of the inmates is completed according to the Jail Code of Bangladesh and the program of the projects is divided into two types ( accommodation and service ). The site is divided into 4 zones, eg. Admin ( along the roadway), two accommodation zones, and one service zone which creates the interconnection between them. 01

2. Surveillance: A total of 6 layers of the security system work as a whole to keep the prison under complete surveillance. The boundary wall, sub boundary wall, and the unit-building entry gate work as the first three layers. Every unit building consists of three blocks( two cell blocks and one service block ). Each block can be self-isolated for any emergency. Each cell block consists of one staircase along with one guardroom. These two can be isolated from other part of the floor so that each floor can be isolated from other floors. These two isolation systems along with the cell confinement are the last three layers of the security system. 3. Therapeutic Environment: The open green space and water body replace the typical wide and heat-reflecting hard paving and create a natural environment. Every Unit of the accommodation zone also consists of one open space and every block of the building also has one courtyard. The courtyard is multi-functional. While it eases the surveillance from the guard room, it enables the cross ventilation of the cells; also, it provides a lofty green space that can be observed from every cell. 4. Education and Training: The rehabilitation zone consists of one workshop and one library-learning center. The workshop will provide necessary vocational training and job opportunity so that the skilled inmates can work there and earn which will make savings for them after their release. The library provides an archive of books, newspapers, and other learning material, a reading room, and classrooms. The classroom can be used for unstructured adult education and structured education for student inmates.

75’ VISIBILITY FROM GUARD ROOM & CORRIDOR

The front of the site contains an admin block, a service warehouse, and a parade ground which is separated from the highway by a green belt. So, it makes a buffer area between the confined area and the public area. The confined area consists of two accommodation zones, interconnected by a service zone. The first accommodation zone consists three-unit, eg. Undertrial: Division 01, Undertrial: Division 02, and Female unit ( Undertrial and convicted ), as the inmates of this unit, has to attend District court and other judicial institutions. The other accommodation zone contains Convicted: Division 02, Convicted: Division 03, Classified and Condemned zones. The major axis, running along the north-east to south-west creates the entryway and separates the Female and the Classified-Condemned units from other units. The center of the confined area is an open green space. The space is ended by a workshop and kitchen on one side, and by a library and hospital on the other end, surrounded by seven accommodation zones on the other two sides. The open green space is composed of lash green and a shallow water body that accommodates the meditation platform by its side. All zones ( accommodation & service ) are connected by soft pave which maintains the connectivity of the zone as well as decrease the hard surface. The composition is surrounded by a hard paved walkway for the guard for surveillance which is surrounded by an 18ft high wall. And finally, the surrounding ponds make a security barrier for the prison Naturally.

ARCHITECTURE CAMPUS IN BUET D H A K A , B A N G L A D E S H DESIGN STUDIO - IX

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

The Department of architecture, in BUET, is in a perpetual growth process with a promising vision, Currently, the department lacks the amenities of modern labs with cutting-edge technologies like an Environment Lab (Thermal, Acoustic, Lighting), Simulation Lab, Visualization Lab, Ergonomic Lab, Design Research Lab which is hindering the vision of the Department. The above scenario renders that, the building for the Department of Architecture, BUET designed by Professor Richard E. Vrooman is facing difficulty in adapting to the growth process of the Department, though it is an inspiring Architecture for the students of the Department. We need a new typology of Architecture, that is not only a masterpiece but also adaptable to any transformation. So, a proposal for an extension of the building, replacing the two-storied western blocks of the midrise building is under process. This project follows the proposal and represents a vision for it. The Department of Architecture, BUET is a place of memory for the teachers, students, and alumni. They spend at least five great years on these premises and create a lifetime memory. It's a place for various functional activities. The existing Double height space and the curvature walkway accommodate various festivals, cultural functions, Exhibitions as well as daily student gatherings. The second-largest Cultural function and Procession of “Pohela Baishakh” is arranged on these premises. It's a place of heart for the students; even after graduation, the premises serves as their second home. 09

Typically, high or mid-rise educational institution lacks a relationship between the students and nature which affects the mind and body of the students. The other challenge was the orientation of the site, which dictates the elongated facade on the east and west side.

3rd Floor _ Floor Type C Teachers’ Room

The project deals with the two challenges with an exceptional form, that welcomes nature by providing several abandoned lofty terraces facing the central field as well as reduces the heat. The ten-storied building is composed of two modules containing 4 types of floors. The upper three floors are arranged in such a way that every floor is shaded by its upper one and easily provided with a clear glass facade in spite of being an eastern elevation. Only the upper floor is provided with a verticle louver and the lowest type is an open terrace accommodating outdoor activity.

2nd Floor _ Floor Type B Cafe | Echibition Space 1st Floor _ Floor Type A Library | Conference

The indoor spaces include a classroom, studio, lab, library, conference hall, teachers’ room, and students’ lounge, while the outdoor space accommodates jury space, cafe, student’s and alumni association office. The ground floor is open to outdoor accommodating outdoor as well as semi-outdoor activities. The extension is connected with the existing building on the 2nd and 3rd floors by a connecting bridge. The western facade is composed of a service core with a small pocket serving as a small terrace. Thus the building copes with the critical orientation, and with its unique pattern, it can reduce the cooling load by a large proportion.

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

The trend of going out of town on holidays is increasing day by day in our country. To support the trend, a proper accommodation facility is in need. The facility should not be only accommodating and focused. It should complement the site and the focus of the tourist. The site was at tamabil, Sylhet. The Jaintahill track is situated on the south of the site which is clearly visible and a focused attraction of the site. The access to the site is from the nearby highway which is on the north side of the site. The focus tourist group was mountain hicker for this project. The key prospect of the project was the site and user group.

The site is on an inclined topography which is gently elevated from the southern surroundings. Block A is placed as far as possible from the highway, to reduce noise interruption and maximize the visibility of the Jaintahill from the road. Block B is placed by the southern boundary of the site to keep the existing fruit garden. Several open terraces are placed to expose the user to nature. The building material is shipping container, which is highly available in the locality for the stone industries. The project is designed in such a manner, that the focus attraction, Jaintahill is visible from every part. In addition to that, several view deck is included to compliment the surroundings. 14
