To the August/September edition of the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory. August is still the height of summer and although the longest day has passed hopefully we still have some hot days to come which is why we have a travel feature closer to home on a great weekend away to Anglesy in Wales for this edition. As usual we have lots of new advertisers this month and with schools and colleges returning we have Anniesland College advertising all their new classes for Aug/Sept on page 8. Finally if you or someone you know has a business the readers should know about call for a chat to discuss how we can actively promote your business to a local audience at cost effective rates. We are also keen for any feedback and any topics or information that you think would be useful for the magazine. We hope you have a great couple of months and enjoy the children going back to school!

NEW MUSIC REVIEW Katy Perry: Teenage Dream 'Teenage Dream' is the second release from pop star Katy Perry, which follows her hugely successful 2008 platinum release 'One Of The Boys’ "When I was touring, I wanted people to dance more," Katy says. "So I wrote an album that made people move, yet didn't sacrifice the story substance that I had on the last record. The album showcases an artist who dares us to join her as she experiences every facet of life. Highlights include the heartbreakingly wistful "The OneThat Got Away," the naughty, playful strut of "Peacock" and the wonderful “Who Am I Living For?”. Katy Perry's exhilarating second album "Teenage Dream' will move you, both emotionally and physically.

The Saturdays: Headlines One of Britain’s favourite girl groups, The Saturdays, release ‘Headlines!’. The songs from these sessions were originally intended for a new studio album to be released in 2011 but the girls had different plans. “As soon as we heard Missing You it just felt like a record that should be released now,” says Mollie King. ‘Headlines!’ is an eighttrack album that includes a handful of sparkling new songs - plus their number two smash from last year, ‘Forever Is Over’. As well as the release of new material, summer 2010 will be massive for The Saturdays and their fans. Sheryl Crow: 100 Miles From Memphis 100 Miles From Memphis' is the seventh studio album from American singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow, following up 2008's 'Detours'. Having produced country and pop-rock influenced music since her 1993 debut, Crow turns to the sounds of Memphis soul to produce her most heartfelt record to date. Growing up literally '100 Miles From Memphis', she has returned to her roots with a collection of songs that feature the likes of Keith Richards and Justin Timberlake. Throughout, Crow seems to be enjoying herself, none more so than on bonus track I Want You Back (complete with dedication: “For Michael With Love”), Brandon Flowers: Flamingo Killers frontman Brandon Flowers has released details of his debut solo album 'Flamingo'. One single, 'Crossfire', is also set to be released in the UK on August 23 which is just moody and brooding enough to wet your appetite. Other tracks on the album include 'Jilted Lovers and Broken Hearts', 'Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas' and 'Playing With Fire’. Brandon believes his solo album 'Flamingo' will only make The Killers stronger, and he hopes the next record the band makes will be the best ever. The Food Doctor: Healing Foods for the Mind and Body by Vicki Edgson and Ian Marber You don’t have to be a holistic therapist to know that what you put inside your body has a big impact upon what you get out of it. Looking at a range of ailments and properties of ingredients, The Food Doctor is packed with nutritious knowledge, featuring the definitive list of the top 100 foods for health. You’ll buy this if you know what’s good for you..

Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual by Michael Pollan Following on from his best-selling ‘In Defence of Food’, here we have sixty-four golden rules which cut through the science, nutritional jargon and trend, to tell us in simple, common sense terms: how to eat (and enjoy it). This pocket-sized manual is sure to change what you buy and eat, without a trace of a faddy diet or the need for a glossary.

The Flavour Thesaurus by Niki Segnit For anyone who loves to experiment in the kitchen, this is a unique collection of flavour combinations, providing information and inspiration for any creative cook. Detailing 160 popular ingredients and exploring all the ways they might be combined in the kitchen, this book is educational, full of practical advice and funny too.

NEW RELEASE Swallow This by Mark Philips There are a thousand books out there for wine-buffs, but what if you simply like a drop every now and then and fancy knowing a bit more about it? This American title aims to provide a ‘progressive approach’ with practical information such as the four golden rules of buying good (not necessarily expensive) wine, why you shouldn’t store it in your kitchen and how to make it taste better with the use of a microwave and ice cubes. Yes, really.

THE UNTOUCHED COASTLINE OF ANGLESEY With its coastline designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, historic Anglesey is a delight for walkers and nature lovers. The superb sign-posted Coastal Path is 220 km long (124 miles) and follows virtually the entire coastline, taking in or passing near many of Anglesey’s top sights; but there are many other attractions. The island is located off the northwest coast of Wales and, at around 720 square kilometres (278 square miles), is one of Britain’s largest islands with a population of some 70,000. It is connected to Wales across the Menai Strait by the original Thomas Telford designed suspension bridge, which opened in 1826 and carries the A50. The later Britannia Bridge, which carries the railway line and the A55, was rebuilt after fire and reopened in 1972. Holyhead, a busy ferry port situated on the west coast, is the largest town on the island. It has a wide range of shops, a maritime museum, the award winning Ucheldre Arts Centre and a country park. St Cybi's Church, which overlooks the harbour, is noted for its stone carvings and stained glass windows; the chancel dates from the 13th century and the rest of the church from the 15th and 16th centuries. The historic town of Beaumaris on the Menai Strait has two nearby golf courses and is a major yachting centre. It is best known for its 13th century castle which is now a World Heritage Site. The town also has a famous courthouse dating from 1614 and a once grim gaol dating from 1829 has been converted into a museum. Visitors can take a cruise to Puffin Island where there are many bird species; grey seals are often seen and there are occasional sightings of bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoises. Located on the northeast corner of the island, Amlwych is the former exporting port for the

open-cast copper mine at Parys Mountain. The mine, once the largest in the world, is free to enter. A popular attraction, the small tidal Llanddwyn Island, lies off the west coast and is part of the National Nature Reserve of Newborough Warren. Except at the highest tides, it can be reached on foot and the neighbouring beach, one of the island’s finest, has blue flag status. Landdwyn, which provides exceptional views of Snowdonia and the Llyn Peninsula, also has an interesting lighthouse marking the western entrance to the Menai Strait. In addition to that at Llanddwyn, Anglesey has numerous beaches and these include Rhosneigr which is great for water sports enthusiasts, Red Wharf Bay, Moelfre, Llandona, Penmon, Benllech, Traeth Lligwy, Borth Wen and Porth Trecastell/Cable Bay. Situated on the bank of the Menai Strait at Brynsiencyn, the Anglesey Sea Zoo is the largest marine aquarium in Wales and has more than 150 different species. You can enter a shipwreck containing conger eels, walk the shark pool grids and visit the newly built No Bone Zone with octopuses. There are many other attractions including an adventure playground and you can even fish for your own Japanese pearl and have it set in a jewellery setting of your choice while you wait.

Close to the Menai bridge is the Butterfly Palace (Pili Palas), where hundreds of butterflies from all over the world can be seen in a tropical environment. There is also a reptile house, lizard land, the tropical home of tarantulas, scorpions, fire bellied toads and hissing cockroaches and a pets corner.Among the more unusual attractions of Anglesey is the small tidal island of Cribinau, off the southwest coast, with its 13th century St Cwyfan’s church which is popular for weddings and christenings. It can be reached on foot at low tide. Also in the southwest of the island is the village of Malltreath, a centre for bird life and home of the wildlife artist Charles Tunnicliffe (1901-1979).

the longest official place name in the United Kingdom. The site dates from around 3,000 BC; it was plundered in 1699, archaeologically excavated and restored in the period 1927-31 and has a burial chamber which can be entered. Anglesey was once known as the ‘Granary of Wales’ and had some 100 watermills and windmills. Llynnon Mill at Llanddeusant is still working and worth a visit; it was renovated in 1986.

The island has a number of prehistoric sites, including the Din Ligwy hut circle and the Ligwy burial chamber; but perhaps the best known is Bryn Celli Ddu. This is close to Menai Bridge and the villages of Llanddaniel and Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrob wllllantysiliogogogoch, the village with

DRIVING THROUGH THE YEARS A recent survey of motorists found that nearly half of them were unable to answer questions on the Highway Code. This handbook has been in existence for nearly eighty years and has undergone numerous changes over time. Driving rules were a lot easier in the past, but the casualty rates were higher than they are today. In the early days of motoring in Britain there was no driving test, so people often taught themselves to drive or received simple training from friends or colleagues and there were virtually no road regulations. By 1930 a few basic laws were introduced including a minimum driving age of 17. The first Highway Code book was published in 1931 and its eighteen pages contained detailed instructions for drivers of horse-drawn vehicles. They were advised to rotate the whip over their head then point it to the left or right depending on the direction they intended to turn. This first edition contained absolutely no information on using car mirrors, indicators didn’t exist and drivers were advised to beep their horn before overtaking to warn the car in front. However, there was a lengthy section explaining the various hand signals that drivers and policemen should use when directing traffic. It wasn’t until May 1975 that demonstrating arm signals was dropped from the driving test. Interestingly, speed limits were in force long before cars were invented. The 1865 Locomotive Act was designed for steam-driven traction engines and the speed limit was set at 4 mph on rural roads and 2 mph in urban areas. A man carrying a red flag was required to walk some way ahead to warn people that a ‘self powered vehicle’ was approaching. This flagman was also used for a few years in the early days of motor vehicles until the speed of the car became too fast for it to be practical. The first speeding ticket and a one shilling fine was issued in 1896 to a man driving at 8 mph in a 2 mph zone. The red flag rule ended in 1896 and was widely celebrated with motorists participating in the ‘emancipation run’ from London to Brighton; an event still repeated annually as the famous veteran

car rally. It wasn’t until 1935 that driving tests were made compulsory and the requirements of this first test were just these: eyesight test, questions on the Highway Code, “General Driving", emergency stop, arm signals, reverse left and turn in the road. There were no official testing centres and examiners met their candidates at a railway station or other designated spot. Testing was suspended for the duration of World War 2 and restarted in November 1946. During the Suez crisis of 1956 driving tests were also cancelled until April 1957 and have continued uninterrupted ever since. Now, not only has the driving test become more complicated, fewer people are passing. To ensure success, make sure you take the time to revise and thoroughly learn the Highway Code and take proper lessons with a qualified instructor. Happy motoring!

MAKE MORE ROOM WITH A LOFT CONVERSION It might be an understatement to proclaim the property market's in a bit of a pickle at the moment, but there is a positive behind the doom and gloom - it has never been easier, or cheaper, to renovate your home. Now might well be the time to convert that forgotten space, which is currently being held hostage by bags and boxes of family keepsakes - the loft. With this guide to loft conversions, you'll add space and value to your property in no time. Why you should improve - not move With the current economic climate as tumultuous as it is, a loft conversion makes sense. If you're going to have to stay put, you might as well look for ways to improve your property and create more space for you and the family. It's relatively cost-effective too. There are builders desperate for work and new planning laws introduced in 2008 mean that certain loft conversions no longer need to be approved by the council, which saves you further red tape, time and expense.

So what are the new rules? When it comes to the new planning laws, there are still some complex rules. But in general, as far as loft conversions go, there's no need to apply for planning permission if alterations don't affect the appearance of a house from the street. Three key points to consider are: 1. Loft conversions don't need planning permission as long as the volume added to the house is less than 50 cubic metres for a detached house, or 40 cubic metres for a terrace house. 2. On the side of the house facing the street, only skylights lying flat on the roof are allowed. 3. At the back, a dormer (an extension with a window at the front) will be allowed, as long as it's no higher than the existing roof and is set back at least 20cm from the eaves

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

27

Any works beyond these three points will probably need planning permission, so play it safe and make sure you're not infringing any laws before you book the builders. More information on loft conversions can be found at planningportal.gov.uk. And again, before booking the builders, make sure you read “Got the Builders In? Make sure you don't invalidate your home insurance.” Be practical Unlike the heady days before the property slump, when gold-plated finishes and designer-laden rooms were the name of the game, these penny-pinching times mean you've got to think practically. An extra bedroom or office space are popular options. Get it right and you'll add a lot of value to your home at the same time. Furnishing the new room-cum-loft shouldn't take too much out of your savings either.

where will electrical points go, do you have a party wall agreement with your neighbours? This will save time and money in the long run. Cover yourself Even in its simplest form, a loft conversion can prove an immense under-taking, so check first to see if your home insurance will cover all eventualities. And although it works out cheaper to carry out conversions these days, don't get carried away. It's possible to have too much space and the end result could mean a house that's top heavy with too many bedrooms for the amount of living rooms beneath. Finally, it's important to know that once you've added size and value to the property, you'll probably need to upgrade your home insurance to cover the new rebuild cost and any contents contained within the extension.

Ask lots of questions Before you do anything, arm yourself with a torch and tape measure and get up into the loft to see what kind of space you're dealing with. Ask yourself lots of questions such as how sound-proof is the room, is there enough light, how do the proportions of the loft work,

RM Plumbing & Gas Services - Reliable and Local

Finding the right plumber or heating engineer is a daunting task, and on occasions has to be done under extreme time pressure, for example when the boiler is not working on a very cold day. Wondering if they will turn up at all? If they do turn up, how much are they going to charge you? and what will the quality of work be like? RM Plumbing & Gas Services have a long standing reputation for being honest, efficient, respectful and highly experienced at handling the most difficult jobs from both residential and commercial premises. Their local plumbers can carry out any job from the simplest leaking tap through to a full replacement heating system. The company was set up by director Ronnie McFarlane, who served his apprenticeship straight from school and went on to work as an engineer with Scottish Gas covering the East Dunbartonshire area. In 2001 Ronnie decided to go it alone and has built his company steadily through recommendation and reputation for quality workmanship. Due to the continued support from the local residents to use RM services, Ronnie has been able to employ two apprentices, 1st year apprentice Matthew Baillie & 4th year Kevin Gallagher who are both from the local area, during a time when many other large construction companies are unable or unwilling to start apprenticeships for young people. RM also have time served plumbers, gas engineers and an electrician currently employed.

In need of a new boiler? Ronnie and the team are boiler replacement specialists and supply high efficiency condensing boilers that are cheaper to run and more environmentally friendly than conventional boilers. They also have power flush machines that can make your old heating system like new by removing sludge from your system with no mess and no fuss to make your whole system run more smoothly. The company is also part of the new “Gas Safe Register scheme which starts on April 1st 2009, replacing the existing organisation operated by CORGI. By law, from April 2009 all gas installation companies and installers are required to join the new registration scheme and they will all be required to remain competent and registered, and will therefore will be inspected regularly. To tie in with this new register starting, Ronnie has opened a new showroom/advice centre in Auchinairn Rd, Bishopbriggs for the public, please call for more details. With RM Plumbing & Gas Services you can have peace of mind of having first class professionals working on your behalf. The company is fully compliant with all building regulations and all work is guaranteed for 2 years as standard. All appointments are taken with the customer in mind to minimise disruption. For reliability, integrity and honesty, you can trust RM Plumbing & Gas Services.

ALFA ROMEO MITO Alfa Romeo is a brand that conjures up all manner of images in the average car buyer’s mind: Passion, flair, beauty it’s the stuff motoring dreams are made of. But on the flip side of the coin are the less attractive connotations reliability woes and trouble-prone electrics are reputations dealers are still struggling to overcome. With that in mind, news that the most complicated engine ever to grace an automobile is being fitted to the latest MiTo might send a shudder down the spine of some retailers. But the new MultiAir powerplant isn’t something to be feared. Yes, it might be more complicated than quantum physics, and the last thing you EVER want to do is get involved in a full-blown conversation about how it works, but the fact remains it is still a dramatic leap forward. All you really need to know are three key facts: MultiAir is more fuel efficient, it’s greener and, most importantly, more powerful than a standard engine. It does all this in an extremely clever way too.

It’s something to do with pistons, valves and springs. Or something. However it works, it’s seriously complicated and impossible to explain here without sending you to sleep, so I won’t bother. Google it if you’re interested. What’s far more important is how it drives. And boy does it excel here. The MultiAir 1.4-litre, turbo-charged engine is available with two power outputs: 135bhp and 170bhp. The latter is the most exciting of the duo, hitting 60mph in 7.5s, topping 135mph and it’s got that evocative Cloverleaf badge of days gone by too. On the road, turbo-lag has been all but eliminated producing a driving experience that really stirs the soul. Power is almost instantaneous and the MiTo feels beefy, belieing its size. This is, after all, the Italian’s rival to the Mini and with this unit under the bonnet will be a true contender for honours against a Cooper S. The MiTo MultiAir also features a host of other tech for the car maker including active suspension, fuel saving stop-start and DNA. That last one is utterly superb it’s an electronic system (don’t grimace) that communicates with the engine, braking, steering, suspension and transmission to alter the ‘feel’ of the car, depending on circumstances.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

43

Derived from racing, it’s dramatic in the way it alters the MiTo and with the ‘Dynamic’ setting engaged, makes it feel positively sporting. The throttle response is crisper, steering sharper and the car hunkers down, gripping harder in bends. The other two settings stand for ‘Normal’ and ‘All weather’, which again alter the car’s feel accordingly, but are rather less exciting.

is reduced by 10 per cent, fuel consumption cut by the same amount while power is boosted 12.5 per cent. For those buyers forced into downsizing to save money, but not wanting to lose any performance, the MultiAir offers a unique opportunity. By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Another debut in this MiTo is the six-speed gearbox. This has been developed in-house by Fiat and offers a swift, direct shift. It’s not as good as some rivals, but is a huge improvement over the five-speed found in the 135bhp variant of the MultiAir. Specification for the MultiAir is reasonable. It comes in three trims Lusso, Veloce and Cloverleaf with the base model featuring 16-inch alloys, electric windows, air conditioning, that all-important DNA switch and a CD player. That costs from £15,165. But the biggest talking point really has to be that ground-breaking engine. MultiAir is a dramatic step on for the brand. You only have to look at the figures to see that: CO2

RECIPE OF THE MONTH Enjoy British plums at their best with this delicious baked tart. It tastes just as good warm or cold served with a spoonful of thick cream or crème fraiche.

Serves 8 Ready in 1 hr 15 mins

Plum and Almond Tart 300g (10oz) fresh shortcrust pastry 115g (4oz) unsalted butter, softened 115g (4oz) caster sugar 2 large eggs, beaten 115g (4oz) ground almonds 55g (2oz) plain flour 6 large firm plums, stones removed and sliced 4 tbsp plum jam, warmed and sieved 1 tbsp lemon juice

1. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 23cm (9in) loose-based fluted flan tin. Trim the edges and prick the base and sides of the pastry with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 20 mins. Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. 2. Beat the butter and sugar in a large bowl until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs and ground almonds then gently stir in the flour. Spread the mixture into the pastry case and level with a spatula. 3. Arrange the plum slices on top of the almond filling in concentric circles. Place the flan tin on the hot baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 mins. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C, 350F, Gas 4 and bake for a further 2530 mins until the filling is golden and set. Mix the jam and lemon juice together and brush over the warm tart. Serve warm or cold.

Bearsden & Milngavie Directory: The Local Directory at the heart of the community

“I never knew so many businesses existed within the area.” This remark has been made time and time again in relation to the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory. Since April 2007 the Bishopbriggs Directory has gone from just an idea to firmly establishing itself as the magazine for the local area. Starting off with just 2000 copies, the directory has expanded over the 3 years to now cover 12,500 homes throughout Bearsden & Milngavie. Containing a mixture of editorials, adverts and articles, as well as local information and events, the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory regularly receives positive feedback from the residents and advertisers alike.

Truly Local Local residents like to support local businesses: local businesses need the support of local residents. The vast majority of our advertisers live, work or have connections within our distribution area. Many of these businesses don’t have a ‘shop front’ - they’re small independents who use a home office, and Bearsden & Milngaive Directory is one of the few affordable ways they can promote their business to a local audience. By using them you are truly supporting your local community. A sister directory covering Bishopbriggs Directory started in April 2006 which gives total coverage between the two directories of 25,000 homes

throughout East Dunbartonshire and surrounding areas.

Step Out of the Box… … and get noticed. Adverts are visible and never lost on a page, even if people are skim reading. There are never more than four adverts on a page and there are limited advertisers within each business category, to ensure that no-one becomes “lost” in a long list of competitors. Editorial features are available, if you want to tell readers about your business in more detail. We also offer leaflet drops along with the directory.

Shelf Life The Bearsden & Milngaive Directory has excellent shelf life, the relevance of the editorial and advertising content, as well as local information, means it is in constant use. Residents keep it as a reference point until they get the next issue, thereby giving advertisers immediate access when their services are required. This is really important because although some people may require services immediately, most will not, but will subconsciously retain the names of adverts they find eye-catching and notice often. This is why repetitive advertising usually yields the best results: it keeps your name prominent and at the forefront of peoples minds. If you think that advertising in either the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory or the Bishopbriggs Directory could benefit your company then please call either Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210.

What our advertisers say............ I have been advertising in the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory since June 2007 and find it to be the most cost effective advertising that I do. We receive excellent feed back from our advertising and will continue to advertise in this publication and would recommend it to any new or established businesses who want more from the area. William Burke, Guttermaster “Brilliant! We have seen a dramatic increase in business since advertising in the directories. They get delivered when they should and where they should, unlike some other “mags” that we have used in the past. The professional image the directory delivers benefits every existing or potential customers. Noel Daly P & N Bathrooms I have been advertising in the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory since the first issue, people often refer to the directory and the work that I get easily covers the costs of advertising. Keith Malley, Chips Away We found the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory one of the best forms of advertising we have tried. Many of our customers have came in and mentioned the discount that we run in the directory. It allows a local company to reach local customers in need of our services and we feel it has helped us establish ourselves as a new business in the area.

Our company, Sovereign Select Chauffeur Driven Cars, based in Kirkintilloch have been advertising in both the Bearsden & Milngavie and Bishopbriggs Directories since their creation and have found that it has greatly assisted in the steady growth of our business by its provision of q u a l i t y advertising and a l o c a l showcase for our quality Chauffeur Driven Cars. Robert McKenzie Sovereign Select Chauffeur Driven Cars Last year we spent a large percentage of our advertising budget on well known publications such as Yellow Pages with mediocre results but in comparison, the budget spent on both the Bishopbriggs Directory and its sister publication, the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory proved invaluable - consistently producing more local enquires than any other of the larger nationwide publications. It remains our favourite way to generate valued local customers. There are many imitators of this style of local magazine advertising which have sprung up recently, but Scott and Natalie have the original formula that works with the publication and its results are underpinned with their professional creativity and good old fashioned but necessary hard work. I would look to advertise in any future publications they may create.

GOLF TIP OF THE MONTH

By Daryn Cochrane - The Golfing House

PUTTING ALIGNMENT IS KEY Do you feel like your putting stroke is perfect but you’re missing too many putts? Then you’re among the majority of golfers who don’t square the putter face perfectly at address; and if you’re not aiming where you think you are the chances of your ball finding the hole are greatly diminished. To increase your odds of squaring the putter face follow this easy routine. Once you’ve addressed the ball, stand up straight and extend your arms upward until the putter face is at eye level, then set it square (this works more effectively because your eyes tend to fall offline when you bend over at address) Maintain this grip and lower the putter back down to the ball; there’s your line . Once you’re properly aligned its then time to choose the line, and if you’re having problems in this area just remember these four basic facts:

(0141) 942 4048, email me at thegolfinghouse@btconnect.com or pop into my shop at Bearsden Golf Range. Have a fabulous golfing month!

SKIPPING FIT Don’t make the mistake of leaning forward or skipping too slowly, either of which could cause your feet to catch the rope. Keep your back as straight as possible and start with two footed jumps just an inch or two from the floor. Stand with the rope behind your feet. Using your wrists, turn the rope over your head, keeping your elbows tucked into your body. As the rope arrives in front of you, jump over it and land on the balls of your feet. Jumping just a couple inches off the ground is enough to give you plenty of exercise. It may take a few practice jumps before you get the hang of it, but it won’t take you long before it becomes second nature.

Skipping is something most of us have done at some time in our lives, but did you know that it’s also an excellent way to get fit? The benefits of skipping include increased agility, balance and coordination. It helps to tone arms and legs, as well as strengthening cardiovascular muscles. One of its main benefits, though, is that it is an inexpensive option for those of us who can’t afford to join a gym. A skipping rope costs very little, can be taken anywhere, doesn’t take up lots of storage space and can be used whenever it suits you. As with all exercise, an effective warm-up before skipping is essential. This should consist of a series of movements starting with low impact and low intensity and progressing to high intensity, full speed exercises that simulate skipping. In other words, get the right muscles warmed up prior to doing any actual skipping. Wherever you choose to workout, make sure you are on a non-slip surface. Wear flat shoes, trainers if possible, and comfortable clothing which won’t catch on the rope. Skipping to music will prevent you becoming bored, so use an mp3 player if you are outdoors.

A good way to increase flexibility is to alternate feet when jumping. Skip on one foot for a few jumps. Then stop and jump on the other foot. Soon you will be able to move from one foot to the other without catching the rope in between. Once you have mastered the basics, you can set yourself some exercise routines lasting about 10 minutes. You can increase this gradually to 30 minutes as your fitness level improves or if you find that you are completing the exercises too easily. Simply speeding up as you skip can create a more intense workout. By listening to faster songs, you will automatically jump faster to keep to the rhythm. Interval training can also help you to maintain an optimum fitness level. Start with low intensity speeds, move to high intensity jumps and then back to low intensity. If you feel like doing some additional exercises, why not skip during commercial breaks on television? Don’t forget to have yourself checked out by your doctor before starting this or any other exercise regime. By Lorraine Mace

ANTI-AGEING FOODS Have you heard that the key to staying young is eating right? Perhaps you've also heard that there are certain foods that have special properties, unique components that make them literally antiaging food. There is a lot of misinformation out there about aging and how to prevent it, but the advice we are receiving about eating well is something we would all do well to pay attention to. Antiaging food seems too good to be true, As scientific research reveals more and more about how the human body works, what foods promote a healthy body, and what foods cause physical stress, it is becoming evident that many of the life threatening diseases experienced by aging people are the result of an unhealthy lifestyle and a poor diet. Viewed from this perspective, any foods that form part of a healthy diet might be considered anti aging foods, but it's also true that some foods in particular seem to have unusual properties. The largest groups of these antiaging foods are the ones that contain antioxidants. Antioxidants are molecules that clear away free radicals, damaging particles that damage body cells and accelerate aging. Free radicals are always being produced in our bodies, so antioxidants are constantly needed to remove the free radicals before they have a change to do damage. Many foods, particularly fruits, vegetables, and whole grains contain antioxidants, while a few are

astonishingly high in these beneficial antiaging food molecules. Three of the best are blueberries, red kidney beans, and cranberries. All of this current information on anti aging foods can be used together to design a diet that is both healthy for the body in general and helpful for avoiding the typical signs of aging. Such a diet would avoid consuming pesticides and other toxins as much as possible, as well as foods that are high in fat, salt, and sugar. Grains should be whole grains because the body converts the sugar in these carbohydrate sources at a slow and steady pace. Antiaging foods are whole vegetables and fruits. Proteins should come primarily from beans, nuts, and seafood, with a minimum of dairy, poultry and red meat products. Healthy fats include olive oil and, to a lesser extent, other vegetable oils - avoid trans fats and saturated fats as much as possibl,. though, for many people, adopting a diet of anti aging foods may seem like a drastic and difficult task, most people quickly discover a feeling of increased well-being, and gradually come to enjoy eating these wholesome healthful foods. And they are able to enjoy good health longer into their senior years. Antiaging foods are definitely worth a try. Supplementation can also ensure that you get the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients you need, as sometimes even the most well-balanced diet is lacking in some essentials.
