IS YOUR FACE STARTING TO LOSE TONE AND ELASTICITY? Body and Mind are proud to use CACI – the award winning, finest, non-surgical face lifting treatment available. With a celebrity following such as Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox and TV appearances on ‘10 Years Younger’ - CACI really is the ultimate aesthetic treatment for you. WHAT IS NON-SURGICAL FACELIFTING TREATMENT? CACI non-surgical face lifting treatment re-educates muscle and smooths skin giving a fresh new look. It’s a revolutionary computer aided micro current therapy that has been hailed the first real alternative to cosmetic surgery. This treatment is the result of over 20 years research and is both painless and relaxing. Lines and wrinkles are softened and refined whilst sagging muscles are tightened and lifted back to their original position. Developed by medics in hospitals as a way of treating facial palsy, it is a proven technology which can only be administered by a trained therapist. HOW DOES IT WORK For long lasting results, a course of ten sessions is recommended - taken twice weekly over 5 weeks. After your course you can have a 'maintenance' session once every 4 - 6 weeks. During each session all 32 facial muscles are gently manipulated using a series of precise movements. Soft cotton tipped wands are used on the face and transmit the micro-
current energy, restoring tone and elasticity. Results are visible after the first treatment - facial contours will look lifted and toned. In addition to general facial lifting other noticeable improvements you will see include: forehead lines smoothed eyebrows raised crows' feet diminished under eye-puffiness reduced cheeks firmed and plumped nose-to-mouth lines softened lip lines diminished sagging jawline lifted crepey neck smoothed skin elasticity restored pores tightened WHY TRY IT NOW? We are offering discounted packages with a total saving of over 30% of cost per treatment. We also offer a full range of treatments using the leading skin care ranges. Our speciality lies in our breadth of our expertise and the impeccable service we provide. For more information please check our website www.bodyandmindsalon.co.uk or call us on 0141 956 4008.

MUSIC NEW RELEASES Blur: The Magic Whip Blur fans have been crossing their fingers for a new album since the band's glorious 2009 reunion gigs, and now we have it! The Magic Whip turns out to be a triumphant comeback that retains the band's core identity while allowing new idea’s and flavour. The albums they released post-Britpop were all pretty good and their reunion shows since reforming in 2008 have been explosive with two tracks released in 2012 – ‘The Puritan’ and ‘Under The Westway’ - showing they could still write beautiful, affecting songs. Looking at what they've been up to over the last decade or so, 'The Magic Whip' could be a very interesting project indeed. From the taste we've had so far, Blur are still very much alive and kicking.
Alabama Shakes: Sound and Colour Alabama Shakes knew right away that their second album was going to take them down a strange new path. You would have forgiven the Shakes for sticking to the sound of their debut, which has sold 725,000 copies and took them from Alabama bar band to one of rock's biggest new acts almost overnight. The band were then nominated for three Grammy’s. The journey to Sound & Color was a bumpy one. The group decided to widen its sound with singer Brittany Howard listening to everything from Roberta Flack to the E.T. soundtrack. "We just wanted to be free and explore and not worry what this record would be in the public's eye," says guitarist Heath Fogg. Whether their fan base will follow them into riskier musical territory remains to be seen, but the first of two sold-out shows at New York's Beacon Theatre in March partly answered that question.
Madonna: Rebel Heart The 56-year-old Queen of Pop valiantly defends her crown against any would-be successors via a regal 13th studio album. Rebel Heart is a fine collection of sturdy pop tunes in which Madonna finally allows herself to look back and sometimes pilfer from her peak periods of the late 80’s and early 2000’s. Aside from a couple of clunkers, there is plenty for Madonna's hard-core fan base and the casual listeners to enjoy here. She grappled with her divorce from Guy Ritchie on her past two albums, but now she is back on the market! The album is wrapped up with the title track, recalling how she went from weird kid to narcissist to spiritual thinker over Avicii's bright, orchestrated production. Deep down, Madonna does have a rebel heart and you can't fault her for reminding us that pop music is all the better for it. WHY BESPOKE? Your home is unique to you. It reflects your personality, tastes and lifestyle. So why compromise on mass market furniture and fittings? Why not introduce some special timeless pieces handmade with care and to your exact requirements that will last a lifetime. Thomas Deeprose studied design and manufacture at University in Edinburgh and Glasgow. After graduating he went on to work as a designer for Urban Outfitters Europe, designing and building furniture installations for their high street stores. His work has been exhibited in both London and Stockholm along with being published in design blogs worldwide. Thomas started Deeprose Studio three years ago and has recently moved to a larger workshop in Clydebank. He works with a small, highly skilled team - combining traditional skills with modern manufacturing and design. His eclectic portfolio includes restaurant/bar design and build, shop and interior design to furniture and bespoke kitchens. Thomas works with private clients, businesses and interior designers throughout Scotland. “We have a deep passion for making bespoke carpentry to the highest quality, we specialise in making and fitting furniture for domestic and commercial properties and set our standards high. We always put our client’s needs first.”
“We moved to Edinburgh, buying a traditional Victorian flat for renovation. Our contractor put us in touch with Tommy from Deeprose Studio. We had two rooms fitted with traditional floor to ceiling wardrobes. Two rooms fitted with bespoke bunk beds and in the hallway we put in a floor to ceiling bookcase. We have a large family so have really maximised our space and put a designer touch to our home.” Anna, Bruntsfield, Edinburgh

TRAVEL BEST SHORT HAUL DESTINATIONS FOR 2015 If you are looking for something a little different for your next holiday, there are several short haul destinations which are well worth considering. There’s nothing better for the mind body and soul than planning a trip away, whether that’s a relaxing vacation or intrepid adventure. Here are our pick of short haul destinations for 2015, so take a look and get planning. TURKEY Although the political situation is never particularly reassuring, Turkey remains a popular choice and doesn’t restrict people to visiting in the peak summer months, thanks to its notably longer summers when compared to many Mediterranean destinations. Meanwhile with more culture and history in one corner than most places have from coast to coast, the climate isn’t the only reason to consider visiting. MALTA Having shaken off it’s somewhat stuffy reputation several years ago, Malta is an island born again. A staggering amount of history and, in Valetta, one of Europe’s best preserved old towns make for plenty to see and do, and thanks
TURKEY
to it’s position just north of Africa, the season never ends. Cultural events, from the international standard Arts Festival to the Baroque celebrations in January are also well worth looking into. MONTENEGRO No longer the undiscovered secret it once was, although more and more tourists are choosing Montenegro, it’s still far from spoilt. Some of the most beautiful countryside not just in the Adriatic Balkan region, but in Europe, is here to greet you, with serene lakes, beautiful mountains and stunning beaches around every corner. In short then, if you have already fallen for Greece this should be your next option.

HUNGARY Hungary could never profess to being a popular choice for Brits. However, that’s more because we’re creatures of habit, and this Central European nation is pretty bad at marketing. Budapest for example, ranks amongst the most spectacular and impressive cities in the world, with incredible architecture aplenty and unique culture all its own. Meanwhile, the inland Lake Balaton comes alive with beach lovers during summer. ICELAND Notorious for volcanic eruptions that ruin everyone’s travel plans, and banks in crisis, Iceland is

MOTORING DRIVER’S CARS
We’ve driven some fantastic cars in 2014 and below we’ve narrowed them down to our five favorites based on absolute, pure driving pleasure. They are the maddest, baddest and most heart-racing cars we drove last year and if you manage to get behind the wheel of any of this selection, you’re very lucky indeed.
Rolls-Royce Wraith More of a house than a car, and even costing more than some people’s at £219,480, the Rolls-Royce Wraith is a surreal machine. It’s carpeted with what looks to be real bear fur, features TWO umbrellas concealed in the bodywork, and can even hold its own on the road with its 624bhp outpacing almost anything as luxurious.
BMW M4 The BMW M4 is incredible, speeding from 0-60mph in just four seconds with all the grace and power you would expect from the German marque. The £56,650 car’s looks are equally stunning with sleek lines and striking curves. It clings to the road and can take on whatever corner you’re gutsy enough to throw it round - sometimes a little more sideways than you originally planned.
Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Gadget-lovers will be in heaven in the £119,835 S63 AMG. We could write a wish list of tech as long as our arms and the Mercedes would still have it and more. Inside you’ll find TVs, massage seats and it’s very own Wi-Fi, so you could drive off into the sunset and never be without your creature comforts.

Porsche Macan Turbo Porsche’s latest SUV might not be to everyone’s taste looks-wise, but it’s still been gifted with its namesake’s driving pedigree. Those who want a luxury SUV will not be disappointed with the £67,423 Macan, which comfortably seats five, but it still drives like a sports car. It’s no wonder Porsche can’t build them quick enough.
Jaguar F-Type Probably the best car of the year, the F-Type is flawless. If you can get over the growl that Jaguar’s specially made exhaust makes and actually get it off your driveway, then you’ll find the way it handles is exceptional. With these gorgeous looks, it seems to just be the £85,000 price tag that is wrong with this car. But then if you’re looking at that, it’s probably the wrong car for you in the first place! CINEMA BLADE RUNNER - THE FINAL CUT
One of the all-time sci-fi greats, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner returns to the big screen in a brand new The Final Cut – allegedly the version the director always wanted to us to see, based on Philip K Dick’s 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? It’s often cited not only as Ridley Scott’s best, but one of the movie making triumphs of all time. Certainly amongst the sci-fi epics, to say that an opportunity to see it on the big screen again s h o u l d n ’ t b e m i s s e d wo u l d b e a h u ge understatement. The hero is Rick Deckhard (Harrison Ford) is an excop pressurised into hunting down rogue androids who have escaped from their slave jails on outerspace colonies and are trying to blend in back on earth marked for destruction. But it is Deckard’s unhappy fate to fall in love with one, the beautiful replicant Rachael, played with elegance by Sean Young. He is overwhelmed by the poignancy of false
memories implanted in her brain, and perhaps by the replicants’ growing existential horror at being pre-programmed to die in just a few years’ time. Every shot oozes atmosphere, and with the cityscape draped in eternal darkness and rain seeming to be constantly present definitely adds to the eeriness of the film. Indeed it is hard to fault from start to finish, whether in context of acting or direction, hence our excitement. The Final Cut has a disturbing tale of dehumanisation, and is being pegged as Scott’s Blade Runner magnum opus - the version he always wanted the public to see but, up till now, never had the chance to show them. Whether we agree with all his decisions will be down to the final reviewing, but let’s just say that even if he doesn’t live these sky high expectations, the act of finding that out will be worth every penny.

This became a way for the higher echelons of society to show off their wealth and importance. The ‘Chinese room’ was a feature of many a stately home, from Chatsworth to the Prince Regent’s Royal Pavilion in Brighton, the latter an extraordinary Orientalstyle palace, crammed with objects and furniture from China. As time went on, not only did Chinese factories begin to fuse European and native styles to suit their buyers’ tastes, but also English designers and craftspeople began to imitate Oriental designs. Thomas Chippendale was one well-known example, employing latticework and lacquer in his influential furniture pattern books.
INTERIORS INSPIRED BY THE ORIENT Furnishings and accessories from the Far East seemed wonderfully exotic when they first arrived here centuries ago. Now silk and lacquer, blue-andwhite china and bamboo have become a highlight of our interiors, says Katherine Sorrell. Exciting, mysterious, irresistible… rumours of the treasures of the East encouraged 16th century Western explorers to push back the boundaries of the known world, but it was not until the late 17th century that the English East India Company secured its trading post in Taiwan and began to trade regularly with China. Tea was the first import of significance, and raw silk, too; while buying and displaying costly furnishings from afar - especially lacquer and porcelain, neither of which English manufacturers knew how to produce at the time.
And then came another enormous shift in style when, in 1854, Japan resumed trade with the West after a break of more than two centuries. Europe was flooded with imports: everything from bronzes and silks to k i m o n o s , l a c q u e rs , fa n s a n d woodblock prints (the latter a huge influence on Impressionist painting and the Art Nouveau movement). Christopher Dresser was the first European designer to visit Japan after 1854, and both his book on the country’s art, design and architecture and his own designs for textiles, wall coverings, ceramics, glassware and metalware helped perpetuate the fashion for Japonism at the end of the 19th century. The fashion for Eastern objects and designs had taken firm hold, and eventually percolated down from the piles of the aristocracy to reach ordinary p e o p l e ’s homes.

Take the almost ubiquitous Willow Pattern, for example (see box), which has been found in households up and down the country since the early 19th century. And who these days does not own a piece of blue and white porcelain, a ginger jar, a Chinese rug, a ‘coolie’ style lampshade or a rattan side table, for example? Oriental-inspired fabrics, wallpapers, furniture and accessories can be used to make a statement in any room, or can blend gently into an eclectic interior, while the colours - rich, warm red, gorgeous blues, yellows and greens, touches of black and highlight of gold - are highly appealing and can be employed as subtle touches or all-over schemes. Whether it be a precious, hand-made antique, an item specially mass-produced for the European market or a Western item that has been influenced by Oriental designs, we love to incorporate beautiful pieces that demonstrate the craftsmanship, the materials and the styles that have become symbolic of Eastern cultures… just like the aristocrats of the 17th and 18th centuries. Fashions may come and go, but Oriental style has become a timeless staple.

BEAUTY SOFTLY DOES IT Summer is just around the corner; long-sleeves have been banished for another few seasons and we’re eyeing up new sandals, sunglasses and swimsuits. It’s all too easy to skimp on body care in the colder months, but now the sun is finally out it’s time to treat ourselves to some much-needed TLC. Good exfoliation is a must, particularly if you’re planning on self-tanning. Unfortunately, many of the scrubs on the highstreet are too harsh, stripping the skin of its natural oils and leaving it feeling scratched and s o re . H ey l a n d a n d Whittle’s Exfoliating Soap Bag (£6) is a much better option. Filled with natural soaps that are packed with essential oils, it’ll make a noticeable difference to your skin and is the perfect alternative to shower gel. For a really indulgent treat, however, it’s hard to beat the Lime & Ginger Salt Glow by Elemis. At £36.50, it isn’t cheap, but it works wonders and smells divine. While bubbles are fun, if you want your bath product to leave your skin silky smooth, then oil is your best bet. Neom’s Tranquillity Bath and Shower Oil is heavenly. A bottle costs £40 from www.amara.com, but a few drops go a long way. Along with skin nourishing ingredients, such as jojoba and Vitamin E, it has a high concentration of essential oils (12 in total), to help you destress, unwind and forget that row you had with your manager. Pour yourself a large glass of wine, lock the
bathroom door, put some music on and… relax. If you moisturise all over every day, you can get away with a light body lotion. But, let’s face it, how many of us have time? If your daily beauty routine is more ‘bare essentials’ than ‘at home spa’ it’s worth investing in a heavy duty hydrator for the weekend. A v e d a ’ s Beautifying Body Moisturiser (£22) is wonderfully rich, but absorbs well, with none of that greasy residue that some high street brands can leave you with. The smell is, quite simply, amazing - you may well find that you attract a lot of compliments on your new perfume. Most of us are guilty of neglecting our poor feet, particularly when we can hide them away in boots all winter. But, come summer, the most beautiful pair of designer sandals won’t hide dry, cracked heels and chipped polish. A salon pedicure always feels like a real indulgence and can get your feet in tip-top condition for the warmer months. For minimal maintenance, opt for a long-lasting varnish, such as shellac, in a colour that co-ordinates with your favourite sandals. Aqua, coral, bronze or soft violet all look great with a tan. Keep the good work up at home with regular moisturising. We love Narynda’s Heel Balm (£9.50), which is completely natural and unbelievably nourishing. (It also works wonders on dry elbows.) www.narynda.com

Cherry-red and ‘nude’ lips are both key trends for this summer. Whichever look you decide to embrace, you need a smooth surface to get the best result. Red lipstick, in particular, will highlight any areas of chapping or dryness. Mint Julips Lip Scrub by Lush (£5.50) gently buffs away dry patches and softens skin. Warning: sugar, lemon and peppermint make it rather tasty, so you may find yourself reaching for it quite a lot.

Claim Back Your Lawns from Moss and Weeds with Greenthumb
39
Hi, my name is Glyn Jones and I own your local branch of GreenThumb Lawn Treatment Service. Together with my wife Alex and my brother Barrie, we are on a mission to help you claim back your lawns from moss and weeds. So if you live in Bishopbriggs, Bearsden, Milngavie, Drymen, Killearn, Dumbarton, Helensburgh or pretty much anywhere thereabouts, then give us a call to arrange your FREE NO OBLIGATION lawn survey. We serve many hundreds of customers in these areas, and so we are totally au fait with the prevailing ground and soil conditions - generally speaking we are dealing with heavy, clay soil with a tendency to hold water, hence the proliferation of moss. Each lawn receives four pre-scheduled treatments throughout the spring, summer and autumn to help the grass stay fit and healthy, and better able to resist the main enemy of our lawns - moss. The battle against the moss will take more than feeding alone,
and so we have at our disposal professional machinery to hollow-tine aerate and scarify where appropriate. We are professionally qualified to NPTC Standard (PA1 and PA6) so you can have total confidence that we will responsibly use all of the tools at our disposal in a thoughtful and professional manner. We are more than happy to fully discuss the various aspects of our treatment strategies - we find the subject fascinating. We have many satisfied customers, who we now regard as friends, and we invite you to try us out and see if, together, we can bring a smile to the face of your lawn.

Happy Pets Why a Luxurious Bed is Important for your Elderly Dog A comfortable place to rest their head, extra support for arthritic bones and a little extra TLC dogs need all of these things as they grow old. You can make their twilight years a happy time for both of you simply by being aware of the issues they face, and what you can do to help. An orthopaedic bed with a memory foam mattress will support their joints by moulding itself around them, helping with blood circulation and providing a comfortable place to rest. Problems such as hip dysplasia often show themselves in middle age, so even if you don’t consider your dog to be elderly, it may be worthwhile investing in this type of bed.

What types of luxury beds are there? Self-heating Metallised insulation is placed below the lining, and radiates heat. Covered with a sheepskin or fleece outer layer, this would have therapeutic benefits particularly if your house is draughty. Elevated On the theme of draughty houses an elevated bed keeps your dog away from a cold floor, and is available in a range of sizes. Luxury materials One of the most important considerations is the material used to make the bed and mattress. You can buy alpaca fibre and soft fleece fillings, but it’s also important to think about practicality, so zip-off covers should be a priority to maintain hygiene. A luxurious place to sleep is important for dogs of all ages, but particularly so for those in their later years.

GARDENING
GOING POTTY FOR SUMMER PLANTS
by Pippa Greenwood
Summer bedding plants are everywhere at this time of year and as soon as conditions are reliable enough, you can plant them out in your garden to create a wonderful, colourful display to last the whole summer long. I am a great fan of hanging baskets, window boxes and patio containers, but this year why not ring the changes and also include some unusual containers and planters to bring a different look or even a bit of humour to your garden? You can use almost anything as a planter, so keep an open mind before you chuck anything in the bin or skip. I have seen some really crazy plantings in disused hand basins, loo cisterns or even the lavatory itself! Provided there is adequate drainage in the base of the container, it should work well. If you are using something like a hand basin which only has one plug hole in the bottom, make sure that you cover it with pieces of broken crock and then perhaps put an inch or two of coarse gravel in the bottom of the container before you put the compost in as this should help to make sure that the drainage hole does not become blocked. But if you don’t like the idea of bringing your loo or bathroom out into the garden, there are plenty of other normal household objects which can be used as useful planters without necessarily making your
neighbours think you have gone completely crazy. How about that old watering can that’s sprung a leak or has a loose handle? Whether you have a traditional galvanised can or a more modern plastic one, you can have great fun planting it up with bedding, particularly if you choose something like trailing blue lobelia to come spurting out of the top and perhaps even the end. Buckets, too can look really good fun and if you have one which still has its handle firmly attached, then you could use it as a hanging basket. Plastic buckets can have holes drilled or melted in the base and similarly you can use a sturdy nail to make holes in the base of a metal bucket. Old footwear can be turned into planting with real flair. If you use old gardening boots or a pair of shoes, you are unlikely to need to add extra drainage as they invariably drain well. But if you are going to recycle a pair of wellies, then you may need to add a bit of extra drainage unless they have quite a lot of damage on their soles. Again, cascading plants can look particularly dramatic, but a bunch of bright red geraniums or the spiky hedgehog-like foliage of a bright green or variegated grass can look particularly handsome appearing out of some discarded footwear. What about a beaten up old handbag? If you choose one with several compartments, you can even have sectional planting and if you have one with a handle, it too can be suspended from a pergola or wall and used rather like a hanging basket. See if there’s anything in your kitchen cupboards that could be recycled and put to better use in the garden. An old saucepan, casserole pot or even a mixing bowl or jug can make an attractive planter, but again you will have to make sure that there is sufficient drainage. If the container is large and there are no drainage holes in it, then the other option is to plant it up as a mini bog garden and use moisture-loving plants in it such as hostas or pondside irises. Colanders or sieves also make interesting and unusual hanging baskets and have the advantage of holes that are generally so small that you need not even use a liner. You can simply concentrate on planting one or two upright specimens in the centre of the colander and then using plenty of trailing plants around the edge and allowing them to cascade down. Provided you have time to keep them well watered, you could even create your own living tea set with an old sizeable teapot and some large mugs full of favourite summer bedding.

Larger items such as old wheelbarrows or chimney pots may not be the sort of thing you have lying around your own garden, but you can often pick these up very cheaply from a local salvage or junk yard or perhaps even from a friend’s garden. Something like a wheelbarrow gives a huge planting area and because it holds such a large volume of compost, it will also mean that you need not be quite so concerned about watering, as it will be less inclined to dry out. All these containers can be treated in just the same way as a container that you have bought from the garden centre. As I mention, drainage is of great importance, but when it comes to choosing a compost and the plants themselves, you need nothing any different from when you are planting up a more traditional container and believe me you can have a lot more fun! TECH GUIDE BEST CAR GADGETS FOR 2015
How to hang onto your licence and keep the kids happy too! We’ve come a long way from the days when the most interesting accessory you could get for your car was a set of fluffy dice. There are all kinds of useful accessories for in-car entertainment, navigation and safety, and you can even get gadgets that can help you hang on to your driving licence. If you’ve ever worried that you might be over the drink driving limit (which has just been lowered) a portable breathalyser is a good investment. The well regarded Alcosense range starts at £25 and rises to £60 for the Elite model, which knows about the lower limits in Scotland, Ireland and much of Europe. If that’s too pricey Alcosense makes disposable tubes at £4.99 for two. Garmin’s £120 Dash Cam 10HD also has safety on its mind. It is a video camera that sits on your windscreen and continually records what’s in front of you, eliminating any doubt about who’s to blame in the event of an accident. The camera uses micro SD memory cards and it does everything automatically so you don’t even need to remember to turn it on. If you’re worried about damage
occurring when you’re parked, such as people shunting you in a supermarket and fleeing the scene while you’re still shopping, look for one with a Park Mode to catch the culprits. If entertainment is your thing you’ll be spoilt for choice. You can pick up an in-car DVD player for £70 or a twin pack for £120, or you could invest in a cheap Android tablet and let the kids watch movies on that: headrest holders are widely available. If your car stereo is showing its age, you can replace it with an all-singing, all-dancing model for as little as £43, although if you want the ultimate in audio you’ll pay a bit more than that: for example, Pioneer’s SPHDA120 car stereo, which uses Apple’s CarPlay technology to work with an iPhone, is currently £339. You don’t need to spend that much for a smartphone connection, though: there is a wide range of good quality car stereos for around £50 to £70 with c o n n e c t i o n s fo r smartphones and/or USB flash drives.

If you’d rather go wireless, gadgets can help with that too. Parrot’s MKi9200 adds Bluetooth wireless technology to your existing car stereo, enabling you to stream music (or audiobooks, or podcasts) from your phone. It also adds hands-free calling and voice control, meaning you can navigate your music library without taking your eyes off the road. It’s currently £139.99, and (optional) installation is around £50. One of the most useful in-car gadgets may be EE’s Buzzard 2, which provides a Wi-Fi hotspot in your car via the magic of 4G mobile broadband. That’s brilliant if you tend to have a carful of smartphone or tablet-wielding children, or if you need to get online with your laptop when you’re out and about. You can pick one up for free if you sign up for a two-year, £10 per month contract, but keep an eye on the data limits: that £10 gets you 1GB of data transfer per month, so it’s not a great idea to let the kids stream endless Netflix programs when you’re on the road. RECIPE WILD GARLIC SOUP WITH HERB CROWDIE
SERVES 6 There is an abundance of wild garlic at this time of year, particularly round the woody parts of the Endrick. I also use Crowdie, a creamy soft Scottish Cheese, from Katie Rodgers of Knockraich Farm in Fintry. Soup 1 Medium Onion, Sliced 1 Medium sized Floury Potato, Sliced, 500g Wild Garlic, Washed 200g Loose Spinach 2 Cloves of Garlic, Sliced 500ml of Good Chicken Stock or Vegetable stock 25g of Butter Splash Olive Oil Salt and Pepper to taste Herb Crowdie 100g Crowdie Small bunch of Chives, finely chopped Small bunch Flat Leaf Parsley, finely chopped Pinch of Cayenne Pepper Salt and pepper Saute onion, potato and garlic in oil and add butter, cook out until the onions are soft. Add stock and simmer until potato is soft. Add wild garlic, stir and cook for 30 seconds. Remove from heat, add spinach and blitz with hand
blender until very smooth. Season to taste Take care not to overcook as you will lose that bright green colour associated with Spring! Mix Crowdie with all other ingredients, squeeze of lemon and season to taste. Serve soup with a small spoon of Herb Crowdie, a swirl of Olive Oil, a turn of pepper and some salt flakes.

A GOOD READ DINING OUT They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but there is if you’re willing to do a little digging for it, and sometimes that means literally. If you’ve ever fancied foraging, growing your own grub or even becoming totally self-sufficient then this could be the book selection for you. If not, then you could just toss the page into a nice salad, and eat that instead!
The Money-less Man: A Year of Freeconomic Living - Mark Boyle Former businessman Mark Boyle swapped his suit for a pair of jeans and some rubber gloves and vowed to live for an entire year without spending a penny. He knew that it wasn’t going to be pretty, but his journey through bad hygiene, scavenging and living a truly frugal existence is fascinating. Dabbling in selfsufficiency wasn’t for Boyle and his approach is extreme to say the very least. He’s gone totally ‘off the grid’ and, according to his friends and family, he may also have gone off his rocker. Whether you could adopt his philosophy or not, it’s a compelling idea and one that will make you question how you live and what’s important.
The Self Sufficient-ish Bible - Andy and Dave Hamilton For anyone who always has good intentions but for whom the idea of living the ‘Good Life’ is a little bit on the extreme side, then twin brothers Andy and Dave are the boys for you. They’re realistic in their approach to living a more green and organic lifestyle, appreciating that most of us are just looking for some ideas for becoming a little more self-reliant and not up for doing a total ‘Tom and Barbara’. They have a refreshing and fun approach to recycling, growing your own produce and making sure your home is more energy efficient. It’s not at all preachy, and with small suggestions it could definitely help to improve your life and outlook, without the need for a total, intimidating overhaul.
The Hedgerow Cookbook: 100 Delicious Recipes for Wild Food - Ginny Knox and Caro Willson If you can pick more than you can eat on the spot, standing next to a hedge in the sunshine, then this is the book for you. It’s all very well taking home all those delicious (free!) berries, but if you don’t know what to do with them all you’ll end up with are more unidentified bags of something-or-other in the bottom of your freezer. This book is all about turning your own mini-harvest into a feast. Instead of jam, why not try ‘fruit leather’ or how about making a flavoured cheese, or cordial or even booze?! You’re only really limited by how many blackberries, sloes, rose hips and wild garlic bulbs you can find, so it’s really worth getting out and taking advantage of nature’s bounty.
