through the sweat. Practicing hot Pilates also increases the body’s production of white blood cells, which fight infection. • Weight Loss: Stretching deeper builds more muscle, which burns more fat. Hot Pilates can result in weight loss. Diet also improves as the body craves healthier food when practicing regularly. Love Pilates is suitable for all ages and abilities and is also great fun! You really should pop along and experience some of these wonderful benefits for yourself! For more information and class timetables, please go to www.karenwoodpilates.com or call Karen on 07736 731 461.

It is a fact that exercising in the heat burns more calories and helps the muscles to work more deeply and effectively. The heat produces a fluid-like stretch allowing for a greater range of movement in joints, muscles and ligaments. When exercising in the heat, your metabolism speeds up the breakdown of glucose and fatty acids and sweat promotes detoxification and elimination through the skin. The main health benefits of Hot Pilates: • Detoxification: sweating on a regular basis allows the body to release toxins and waste from within, providing room for vital nutrients and hydration. • Healthy connective tissue: Pilates opens the body’s connective tissue. Hot Pilates enhances this process, allowing the body to stretch more fully, lubricate and renew, resulting in greater flexibility and energy • Boosts immunity: Viruses cannot survive in high temperatures, so increasing the body’s core temperature fights infections, which are pushed out

Monkey Music and Your Baby Monkey Music’s award winning pre-school music classes introduce babies and young children to music in a way they can easily understand and enjoy – and it’s brilliant fun for both children and adults! The specialist teachers who are carefully chosen for their natural ability to communicate with and entertain young children, gently encourage social and musical skills within a fun, stimulating and friendly environment. Classes are carefully structured to encourage progressive learning and freedom of expression, and children are grouped in small classes according to their age. There are many benefits of introducing music to very young children, particularly when teaching within a group. Early exposure to singing, listening to and

playing music can really help develop a whole range of educational skills. Language and numerical skills flourish through action songs and rhymes; fine motor skills are refined through playing hand held percussion instruments, while an awareness of space and one another is developed through movement. It’s amazing to watch each child’s confidence and self-esteem grow, as their involvement in the group increases!

This term, due to popular demand, new classes are starting on Wednesday afternoons in Woodhill Evangelical Church, Bishopbriggs and on Thursday mornings in Lenzie Union Church. To find out more, or to book your FREE class, call Fiona on 0141 573 7299. Or visit the interactive website at www.monkeymusic.co.uk

MUSIC NEW RELEASES Cheryl: Only Human Cheryl releases her fourth solo album, ‘Only Human’ which has been frontloaded with a lecture by philosopher Alan Watts, whose questions she attempts to answer as the album goes along. That's where this album diverges from her others: having discovered Watts during a long hiatus, she's developed a who cares attitude that leaps out at the listener. It is undeniably pop while managing to challenge convention in its own way. It's thoughtful, considered, celebratory and hugely uplifting. Heavy on pop bangers, this is also a record that encourages the listener to tune into the songs overall message of overwhelming optimism. The debut single from 'Only Human', ‘Crazy Stupid Love’, not only soared straight to number one with over 100,000 copies sold, but made chart history when Cheryl became only the third woman in British history to have four solo No.1s. ‘Only Human’ is the personification of its title; not perfect by any means, but a progressive step forward.

Neil Diamond: Melody Road At 73, the only reason for Neil Diamond to still be making albums - let alone entirely self-written ones - is because he wants to. This is his first original studio release in six years with ‘Melody Road’ - co-produced by acclaimed producers Don Was and Jacknife Lee. The album is a fresh addition to his already gem-filled discography. These are beautiful and heartfelt songs imbued with the wisdom of a man reflecting on life's experiences while still looking forward on the road ahead of him. Just 12 stripped down soft-rock tracks, not too heavy on the strings and hitting consistently hard. Be warned though - ‘Melody Road’ should come with a warning for anyone whose relationship is nearing the rocks!

Take That: III This is the first time Take That have written and recorded as a three and with that new dynamic has come a new sound; this time around choosing an eclectic mix of producers to work on the album. The guys started writing tracks for this album at the beginning of the year with the blessing of Jason Orange who announced in a statement in September that after almost twenty-five years he was leaving the band. The last time Take That released an album was in 2010, when they were a five piece. Their album Progress became the fastest selling album of the century and the second fastest selling album of all time - shifting more than 235,000 copies in just one day. They also sold out eight Wembley Stadiums in 2011 on The Progress Tour (the most ever played in a row since it was built and re-built) and played to almost two and a half million people that year. Lets see what waits ahead for the three piece. To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

Extending your way to a greater sale value

As the housing market continues its recovery, the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) reveals the home extensions most likely to add property ahead of sale. Research conducted as part of NAEA’s latest monthly housing market report revealed that almost half (49%) of estate agents say adding an extra bedroom usually by converting loft space is the best way of adding value to a property. While an additional bedroom fundamentally changes the description of a property, other less drastic changes can also have significant, positive effects of value according to agents.

Research shows that bedrooms and kitchens are seen as the most sensible areas for expansion, and this certainly rings true when a property comes on to the market. The number of bedrooms is usually the first criteria house hunters select, therefor if it’s possible to add an additional bedroom, there can be an immediate effect on price. Remember that securing the necessary consents is an absolute must before any work starts, and any unapproved work can have a significant impact on resale value. To get the best advice on extending, always seek professional advice from your local architectural practice.

Over a third (34%) said that enlarging a kitchen was the best way to boost the price of a property. Beyond these two key changes, opinion was somewhat divided across the country. 4% said that adding a conservatory would add the most value, 3% recommended converting an existing garage into living space. Extensions have the dual benefit of increasing available space within a property, and crucially has the potential to significantly increase value when the time comes to sell. TRAVEL PRAGUE’S VALUE BREAKS WIN

.

City breaks have become popular with working Brits who may not have the time or money to take more than one long holiday a year. A short break to a European city is a much needed tonic and a treat that most people can afford, especially if they choose a cheap but incredibly cultural Prague.

For most city breakers, it is value for money that wins every time, which is why Prague often tops the list of top destinations for travellers. In Prague you can enjoy quality accommodation along with plenty of food, drink and culture at low Eastern European prices.

With city breaks coming second only to sunny summer beach holidays, European cities are well travelled by British tourists. The checklist to ensure a city's favourite with Brits includes cheap air travel, cheap food and drink, plenty of culture and quality accommodation on a budget.

The city break market has really expanded quite dramatically over the past two to three years, driven to a large extent by the rise in low cost airlines. There has been strong growth in cities such as Prague, Budapest and Lisbon, which represent excellent value for people travelling from the UK. It's clear that many city breakers are looking for five-star accommodation: 'fly cheap, stay chic' seems to be the prevailing theme.

Travel agents recommend Berlin, Paris and Tunis, the Tunisian capital, for a short break. They also report that an increasing number of tourists are requesting unusual and off-beat city break ideas compared to traditionally popular destinations. Some are prepared to travel as far afield as Hong Kong, Montreal and Washington DC.

A recent survey by Travelcare found that Prague is number one in the top ten "most-booked cities". Budapest was also featured highly, along with Western European capitals such as Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Rome, and even New York.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

15

Travelcare compared the cost of a standardised city break, including a double room at a four-star hotel for two nights, taxi from the airport to the city centre, a sightseeing bus tour, one-day city transport pass, entrance to a major museum/art gallery, a medium cappuccino, a pint of Guinness, and a three-course meal in a hotel. The survey valued a typical city break in Prague at around £204, with Budapest coming a close second at a cost of £207. Paris was the most expensive of all, costing a whopping £577.This means that, excluding air fares, you could go to both Prague and Budapest for two weekends for the same price as a weekend in Paris.

MOTORING ROLLS ROYCE WRAITH

This is surreal. I’m wrapped in the finest leather, staring at some of most ornate materials I’ve ever seen inside a car and yet still I’m wafting along the challenging A543 at a pace that is leaving the RTOTY crowd lagging behind. Surfing on a gloriously torque-filled surge of V12 goodness, delicately light steering guiding this two ton luxury monster across the Welsh moors, I’m opening up a gap on the cars behind me as my relationship with the Rolls-Royce Wraith finally clicks. For the last two days I’ve been living in fear of harming the £219,480 brute, every wayward sheep tying my stomach in knots, every oncoming tractor making me wince at the impending doom that never happens.

British beauty - the sportiest of Rolls-Royces - really is a nerve-wracking experience. Well, at least at first it is. In time, as the miles rise, fear eases, and you finally begin to gel with the giant - and it’s then, at this moment, that the wonder of this incredible feat of engineering is finally hammered home. It’s here, now, on this stunning piece of tarmac that’s twisting across the dew-dipped Welsh countryside that the Wraith truly comes alive. The 624bhp V12 may be whisper quiet on the motorway, where the dash tells you there’s still 90 per cent of power in reserve (there’s no gaudy rev counter in here), but in kick down it growls, bellows deep and powers off towards the future like a Bullet Train. The first time I let the Roller scamper off, it shocks with the aggressive nature it adds digits to the head-up display. Make no mistake, this big girl has serious pace.

T: 0141 952 6620

You see driving the Wraith is quite some responsibility. With a price tag that wouldn’t look out of place in an estate agent’s window, piloting the curvy-rear ended

There’s no hiding the Wraith’s girth, though. It’s absolutely huge - and feels it. Most of the team who got behind the wheel exited with a huge grin on their face, not just because it was such an event to drive, but because they handed back the jewel-like key and returned the Wraith unscathed. Everyone also agreed that it was simply a very special place to spend time in.

327g/km emissions and 20.2mpg might worry the wallet, but it’s a small price to pay for spa-like levels of luxury.

Driving the Wraith is an event. From the automatically-closing suicide doors, to the inch-deep lamb’s wool carpets, to the glass buttons on the dash and beautifully machined solid metal vent pulls and piano black dash, everything inside feels five star hotel, Ritz-like perfect. All it needs is a butler on the options list to retrieve the umbrellas from inside the flanks of the two front doors to be truly palatial. Driving it to and from Wales for our shoot I was staggered at how comfortable, relaxing and easy it is to clock up hundreds of miles with so little effort. Yes, the

Three Stage Polishing

Rolls-Royce insists its cars are bought by owner drivers and after a week behind the wheel of the Wraith I can well believe that. Yes, sitting in the back might be a pleasant place to spend time, but the Wraith is aimed squarely at the driver and after shelling out close to a quarter of a million pounds I for one know exactly which seat I’d be occupying.

CINEMA FAMILY FILMS TO WATCH THIS CHRISTMAS We all know what it's like. The next few weekends will be spent trawling around the city in a bid to tick everything off the gift list, and if you have kids that potentially means a few tantrums whilst en route. Fear not, though, we've listed the best family films arriving at the cinema this December, just in case you need a little bargaining tool. Get Santa Starring: Warwick Davis, Stephen Graham, Jim Broadbent, Ewen Bremner. Steve Anderson hasn't always been the perfect father. INTERIORS SCANDINAVIAN CHRISTMAS Who doesn’t love Scandinavian style? It combines classic with contemporary, pretty with practical. And it’s the perfect look with which to dress up your home for Christmas. In the Scandinavian countries extremes of landscape, from forests and fjords to boiling geysers and the Aurora Borealis, are all around you. In winter, daylight is fleeting, and keeping warm is a vital part of life. No surprise, then, that typical homes feature thick log walls, small, south-facing doors and windows, and thatched or birch-bark roofs. Inside, vividly coloured decorations in bright, rustic folk style provide relief from the long hours of night and the expanses of snow. Carved wooden spoons, bowls, cups and chests, strongly coloured, woven rugs, blankets and cushions, and beautifully painted furniture in ochres, reds and yellows are the timeless tradition. Appealing as it is, there is much more to Scandinavian style than colourful rusticity, however. What we now called ‘Gustavian’ style became popular in the late 18th century, encouraged by the young King Gustav III of Sweden, under whose patronage the grandeur of Versailles and the skilled creations of master furniture-makers like Hepplewhite and Chippendale were interpreted by native craftsmen in a gentler and more restrained way, blending neo-classicism and romantic Rococo into a unique, northern European decorative style. Think symmetry, pale colours (buttermilk and Baltic blue, grey and peppermint), painted floorboards, ribbons and swags, glass chandeliers, gilding, mirrors and delicate wooden furniture with tapering legs and subtly carved details. Another major influence, a century or so later, was Swedish artist Carl Larsson and his wife, Karin. In the 1890s the couple decorated their rural cottage, Lilla Hyttnås, in a unique and innovative way, combining folk and Gustavian styles with contemporary European influences: Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and Japonisme.

Light and airy, pretty and functional, the look was all gingham and geraniums, bread crocks and baskets, rag rugs and sprigged china. When Carl’s watercolours of the house were published, the public response, in Sweden and further afield, was overwhelming; his books, in the early 20th century, did a great deal to popularise what we now see as the typically Scandinavian style of easy-going Gustavian, folk arts and an open-plan love of light and space. And what he started, a certain Swedish flat-pack furniture giant continued.

Ikea opened its first UK store in 1987 and then who can forget? In 1994 launched its Gustavian-style furniture range, accompanied by an advertising campaign that urged us all to ‘chuck out your chintz’. It sold like hot glogg, and the rest is history - now we all crave the clean-lined, bright and uncluttered look, styled with pretty colours and dashes of folk art. Create a Scandinavian feel this Christmas by combining folk and sophistication, cosy and minimalism. Keep it simple - too much clutter is definitely not a part of this particular look. Your colour palette is, of course, mainly red and white, with green, brown and black for contrast, and the occasional dusting of glitter or artificial snow. Natural accessories such as twigs, branches and fir cones are a great starting point, with generously sized garlands and wreaths made from woven greenery. A sprinkling of metal lanterns with flickering candles creates atmosphere, and a real Christmas tree is, of course, the centrepiece (clip-on Scandi-style candles optional). In general, materials should be as natural as possible, from bark to hessian, felt to Fair Isle, emphasising all sorts of appealing textures. If you can knit, sew or otherwise make your own decorations, so much the better but, if not, there are plenty of gorgeous accessories in the shops and online created by talented craftspeople. Perfection is not required: simply that appealingly homespun look. A row of knitted stockings,

for example, would be just perfect, while linen sacks with folk-style embroidery are ideal for larger presents. A gingham table runner is delightful, as are wooden or woven willow stars, berry garlands, miniature trees, appliquéd bunting and reindeer baubles. You’ve got the idea? Then raise a cup of schnapps and fill your home with festive Scandinavian cheer. BEAUTY LOOK YOUNGER FOR LONGER - Look after your neck and hands When it comes to looking younger, we all seem to focus our attention on our face yet overlook our neck and hands, even though it’s these areas that tend to age the fastest. So it’s time to start taking notice of these neglected areas to ensure that you look younger for longer. Your Neck The skin on your neck is thin compared to the rest of the body, it also has fewer oil glands and can easily become dehydrated. So given that, it’s as important to moisturise your neck as your face, and to extend the application of your daily sunscreen to this area too. Remember to exfoliate your skin regularly both on your face and neck - as this removes dead skin cells, brightens your skin and improves absorption of your moisturiser. On the subject of daily routines, whilst a regular moisturiser is fine for those looking to prevent rather than cure, if your neck is already heavily lined, you’ll need something stronger. Furthermore your neck requires a different formulation to reverse the signs of ageing than your face, so it’s important to use products specifically designed for the neck, which are generally more concentrated and powerful. Eating a healthy diet is key to looking younger too, as foods rich in anti-oxidants and Omega-3 acids have been shown to help skin rejuvenation by boosting collagen production something that declines as we age. Smoking is not only bad for your health, but it damages collagen and the constant squinting and lip pursing whilst smoking causes lines to form quickly. It’s no surprise then, that the delicate skin under your chin is damaged as a result. Your Hands They say that you can tell a women’s age by her hands, so it really is important to look after yours.

Winter weather, central heating, contact with water and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers all serve to dry out the skin, making your hands look older than they are and feel rough to the touch. If the skin on your hands is suffering you can be sure that your nails will be too. Nails need extra attention during the winter months and if they are dry, peeling and brittle this is a sign that you need to treat your nails to some serious TLC. continued on page 38

Limit the exposure your hands and nails have to the elements by always wearing gloves whenever you step outside in cold weather. The same goes for washing up or any activity where your hands are submerged in water; always keep a pair of rubber gloves nearby. Each time you wash your hands, dry them thoroughly and then apply a hand and nail cream - same goes for when you have used a hand sanitizer. Make sure you rub the product in thoroughly and don’t forget to coat your cuticles and nails too. Keep your nails long and strong by applying cuticle oil every night. Use a strengthening treatment to help protect your nails from the elements and to give them extra strength. And for a real treat, head to the beauty salon and get a manicure. You’ll feel a lot more enthused about keeping your professionally pampered hands in tip-top condition when they’re looking gorgeous. mama g's balloon emporium

GARDENING THE TRULY GREEN GARDEN By Pipa Greenwood Well, it’s time to say goodbye to the year 2014 as 2015 is well and truly upon us. This is the time when it is really worth spending a bit more time than usual thinking about the year just gone and the one ahead. What are you going to do in your garden in the year ahead, what plans and dreams do you have? What changes would you like to make? There are so many ways in which you can plot and scheme about all that your garden could have to offer in 2015, but there’s one thing I would ask you to consider: take the plunge, ring the changes and ‘Go Organic’, More and more gardeners have decided that they really want their gardens to be pesticide free zones, concentrating on natural methods of pest control, good gardening and the use of natural fertilising materials rather than chemical feeds. And they do it because it works and makes life so much better for the other less powerful creatures and plants we share our space with. Since we moved to our Hampshire garden nearly twenty years ago, I have kept it completely organic and believe me, it really is not difficult. Weed control can certainly be harder as there is no resorting to herbicides such as glyphosate, but if your garden has been looked after and doesn’t have too many persistent weeds, even that should not be too difficult. If you do have an existing problem then make weeding a regular part of your gardening time and you’ll be pleasantly surprised how speedily you start to get on top of it, and maybe even feel the need to spend less time in the gym and more time out in the fresh year getting a seriously

natural and healthy work out completely free of charge. The rest is easy! Sprays of certain kinds are ‘allowed’ (those based on soft soap to control certain pests, copper based fungicides to control diseases etc) but most organic gardeners prefer to avoid them altogether. But they are there if you need them, although I find no need for them. Barriers and traps are really useful - I am a great fan of horticultural fleece. Placed over a crop such as calabrese from the moment you plant it out, you should be able to ward off all the common pests including caterpillars, cabbage root fly and aphids. Traps such as submerged beakers of old beer or milk to catch slugs, sticky yellow cards to trap flying pests, all work well. And where would I be without sticky backed copper tape and copper rings to keep my veg crops slug free? Of course for many pests there are also biological controls available - to keep vine weevils and slugs at bay in the garden, to stop ants driving you insane, to sort out pesky caterpillars and to make your lawn free from leatherjackets, plus a whole range of controls to stop greenhouse pests such as red spider mite, whitefly and mealy bugs.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

43

True, organic gardening does take a bit more planning and forethought than gardening that is reliant on an armoury of chemicals. If you grow vegetables you will need to ensure that you rotate your crops. Just approximately divide the space you have into three or four chunks and then ensure that each year you grow related crops together and then the following year, each group of crops are moved into a new plot. It also pays to ensure that you really do garden as ‘well’ as you can, avoiding too many short cuts and taking the plant’s health and vigour as a prime consideration. In any part of the garden you need to try to choose plants that really are suited to the site as those grown in unsuitable conditions will struggle and be more prone to disease and pest attack. Don’t forget the old gardening adage, ‘Right Plant, Right Place’. Regular patrols to find problems, so that they can be caught at the early stages and dealt with promptly, mean fewer problems in the long-term and should ensure that you catch an infestation of pests or a disease outbreak before it gets too bad. Often picking off pests or badly infested or infected leaves can be sufficient to prevent a problem developing.

Keeping the soil in good condition is a must and if you don’t already have a compost bin or heap, get on and make or buy one straight away. Garden compost is a fabulous soil conditioner and is packed full of nutrients…..all at little or no cost. Some of these things will add to your gardening budget, but remember that you will not need to spend your hard earned cash on chemical fertilisers, pesticides or spraying equipment, and of course you won’t need to spend time applying the sprays. The choice is up to you, but I strongly recommend it, for a whole host of reasons, only some of which I have mentioned here. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and make veg growing easy with ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Pippa sends your chosen veg plants to you at a perfect time for planting and each week emails advice and tips for getting the best results; plus lots of great barriers and biological controls.

HEALTH GYM - PHOBIC? - SIGN UP HERE

Tempted by the discounted membership fee advertised in my local paper, I thought of signing up for my local gym. However one look through those expensive, plate glass windows at the rows of fit, lycra-clad young people lifting, pushing and jogging made me think again. With my spreading waistline on display over the top of my 1990s jogging pants, I would feel more out of place than a penguin in the tropics. The image of modern gyms as temples to the young and super-fit is hard to shake off: in fact surveys suggest that less than 20% of us are prepared to use a gym to stay in shape. So where can you go if, like me, you no longer match the description “young and superfit” and have an intermittent back problem that gets worse with vigorous exercise? If you want a really gentle form of exercise that aids mobility and balance, you might try Tai Chi. This discipline combines relaxation and deep breathing with slow, gentle continuous movements: improving muscle strength in the legs, helping your balance and reducing stress.

those images of practitioners with limbs contorted into eye-watering positions - but the first principle of Yoga is to do as much, or as little, as your body feels capable of doing. However, the word ‘Yoga’ covers many different kinds of practice so do some research before signing up for a class. For example, Iyengar is about perfecting poses, holding them for a period of time while breathing deeply and checking your body’s alignment, while Ashtanga yoga can be vigorous and intense. If you don’t want a class where you need to move around, Pilates might be the one for you. Pilates has many similarities to Yoga and focuses on rebalancing the body, improving posture and building both muscle strength and endurance through slow, controlled movements. Nordic Walking is easy on your joints and works well for all ages and fitness levels. It is an enhancement of walking, where special poles are used to engage the upper body muscles as well as the legs. There are a range of classes available, from gentle walks for people with health issues to workout-style walks that help you lose weight and tone your whole body.

Finally, you may have heard about Zumba. This is a dance exercise craze started by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto Perez in the 1990s that uses Latin rhythms as the inspiration for a fun fitness programme. You can join a class at any level, from a slower, beginners’ session to a full-on aerobic work out. Active older adults can take part in a Zumba Gold class, offering a lower intensity version of the normal Zumba routines. Many of the exercise methods mentioned here can cater for people with health issues (but do see your doctor if you have concerns). A good instructor will want to know about any problems you have, so make sure to tell yours if you have any conditions that might affect your ability to undertake certain exercises. TECH GUIDE DROP A DRESS SIZE DIGITALLY The New Year will soon be upon us - everybody’s on a diet and the gyms are packed with people whose memberships will last much longer than their willpower. But there’s no need to take extreme measures if you overdo it a bit at Christmas: a few well-chosen gadgets can make losing weight much easier. The trick to weight loss is to make little, permanent changes. For example, using an oil mister (from around £9) reduces the amount of oil you use in cooking while a set of measuring spoons and a digital scale can ensure you’re not putting too much of any ingredient into your food. If you can’t bear to give up fried food, go for a low-fat fryer such as Breville’s Halo Health Fryer (£79.99) or Tefal’s ActiFry (£119) which will mean you get all the taste with a fraction of the fat. Gadgets can help you cook healthy meals in other ways, too: if you have a smartphone, an iPod touch or a tablet you can take advantage of stacks of cooking apps ranging from celebrity chefs’ apps to specialist apps such as the British Heart Foundation’s Healthy Heart Recipe Finder, which is free on both iOS and Android. We’d also recommend using a recipe manager such as the fantastic Paprika app to store any good healthy recipes you find online from the likes of the BBC Good Food website.

Nike’s device also enables you to share your progress with friends in private groups. There’s a huge trend for health monitoring in smartphones, with both Google’s Android and Apple’s iPhones offering health tracking apps. In both cases the apps can talk to other devices such as fitness trackers, and there are plenty of third-party apps for recording your food intake, the workouts you do in the gym or anything else you might want to track and record.

No weight loss programme comes without the recommendation to exercise more, and there are plenty of gadgets designed to help with that too. Fitness trackers can keep an eye on how many steps you take and calories you burn, with devices such as the Fitbit Surge smartwatch (£199) and Fitbit Charge activity tracker (£99) and Nike’s Fuelband (£89) making it easy to track your progress. If you have an iPhone, To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

How can you tell if your new regime is working? While it’s tempting to climb on the scales every day that’s a bad idea, because our body weight fluctuates quite dramatically from day to day. It’s better to track the longer term trend, and once again technology can help with that: smart scales such as Withings’ wireless scales (from around £80) can help you track your weight loss by storing over 100 readings. The scales are also compatible with smartphones, which can take the readings and turn them into inspiring and motivational graphs.

you’re working out as well as eating well, because muscle weighs more than fat - so your weight might not change but your body composition will.

If you really want to see what’s happening to your body, gadgets such as Omron’s Body Logic Fat Analyser (£74) can tell you how much muscle you have, how hydrated you are and how much fat you’re carrying. That’s useful if

RECIPE PEAR TARTE TATIN OR UPSIDE DOWN TART You can use apples or pears for this recipe. I prefer pears straight from the garden. The best pears for this dish are Comice, they are firm when ripe and hold their shape when cooked they also grow well in Scotland. Serves 4 2 large pears (or 4 small) 140g butter 140g caster sugar 1 star anise 1 vanilla pod 1 cardamom pod ½ cinnamon stick Splash of brandy (optional) 300g butter puff pastry

and remove from the heat. 5. Carefully remove pears and place them round side down into 10 cm individual tart pans, if you don't have these, space them out on a tray allowing 4cm Method between each one. 1. Peel and half the pears length ways and using a 6. Spoon 3 tablespoons of the caramel over the pears teaspoon, remove the core. and set aside to cool. 2. In a thick based pot, add the sugar, butter and all 7. Divide the pastry into 4, roll into as best a circle as spices and gently heat until it starts to colour. possible with a diameter of 12cm. 3. Add pears, carefully, with the rounded side down. 8. When pears are cool wrap the pastry over the top 4. When the pears have a little colour and the and gently tuck down the sides. It should still look caramel is the colour of toffee, add a splash of brandy circular rather than taking on the pear shape too much. Make a small hole in the middle of pastry with a skewer, this will allow steam to escape and help crisp it up. by Julie Flisch, 9. Place in oven at 200C/fan180C/gas 6 Head Chef, 10. Cook for 10-12 min or until pastry is golden The Fintry Inn brown, let rest for 5 min and carefully turn out. Julie has vast experience being the Senior Sous Chef at both One Devonshire Gardens, Glasgow and The Georgian Room, De Vere Cameron House Hotel. She was also the Head Chef at CafĂŠ/Deli Zique, Hyndland.

If you are looking for extra sauce, simply add a splash of cream to the pot with excess caramel, bring to boil and drizzle on plate. Serve with a generous scoop of ice cream, I use Katy Rodgers Original Ice cream from Knockraich Farm in Fintry - she also has Christmas pudding flavour ice cream available.

BOOKS THE LAND DOWN UNDER

When it’s cold and frosty outside, there’s no better time to get reacquainted with our antipodean friends as they celebrate Australia Day on 26th January. It’s a ripper opportunity to throw a few shrimp on the barbie, and while you’re cooking up a storm on the beach, you can sit back and read some bonza books about the land Down Under. A Town Like Alice, Nevil Shute For many, Nevil Shute’s novel is the first they read that really gives them a drive to travel to Australia. It’s a compelling tale of love and war which sees Englishwoman Jean Paget captured by the Japanese in the heart of the Malaysian jungle and then forced to endure a death march lasting many months. From Malaysia, Jean returns home, but not for long as she then returns to the Far East to give something back to those who helped save her life. Where she ends up is in a remote part of Oz which challenges her resolve once again. She may not be a bona fide ‘Sheila’, but given what she’s been through, Jean’s got the resilience of a real Aussie battler. Everybody Jam, Ali Lewis This is the story of Danny, who lives on a remote cattle station in the outback, and his brother who has died, his teenage sister who’s pregnant and the rather green English backpacker who’s the latest hired help. Everybody Jam refers to strawberry jam, that’s universally loved by one and all, no matter what their background or status. In Danny’s world, everyone’s gearing up for the great annual muster and it’s a make or break business, with the family pushed to its limits and fighting to survive under the intense heat of the blazing sun. It was written for young adults but if you’ve ever been a gap year student, or you fancy a true Aussie experience, then Everybody Jam could give you a real flavour of what to expect.

Eucalyptus, Murray Bail Murray Bail has written an unusual and touching love story which has grown straight from the craggy Aussie soil itself. Widower Holland has two things he is proud of: his daughter Ellen, and his impressive collection of eucalyptus trees. He has grown every single variety of the gums and it’s the inspiration for a challenge to any of Ellen’s suitors. Holland decrees that Ellen may only marry the man who can correctly identify all of them. While many come by to try and subsequently fail, Ellen spends her days being entertained by a stranger who appears under the shadow of a tree one day. Enchanted and intrigued by his stories of distant lands, Ellen begins to fall in love. It’s a beautiful story that will capture your heart and nurture a longing for romance and travel. Cloudstreet, Tim Winton Tim Winton is an Australian national treasure, and quite rightly so. In one of his seminal works, Cloudstreet is a saga that covers the entire spectrum of human emotion and focuses on not one, but two families: The Pickles and the Lambs, brought together through adversity and trying to get along under one quite substantial roof. The novel spans a twenty year period of the trials and tribulations of close friends and relatives, with everything from adultery to drunkenness threatening to rock the foundations of the house on Cloudstreet.
