MUSIC NEW RELEASES
Rihanna: Talk Talk Rihanna releases her sixth album on 21st November, only a year after Loud hit the shelves. Tracks were originally being developed for a deluxe reissue of Loud, but Rihanna appears to hit a creative spark and is treating fans to a brand new full length ambum only twelve months after the last one. It is helmed by lead single “We Found Love”, the Calvin Harris produced track which shot to number one on the UK charts.
Snow Patrol: Fallen Empire Fallen Empires is the sixth studio album from Snow Patrol, a band who have sold over 11 million albums and been responsible for some of the most instantly recognisable songs in the past decade, including "Run", "Chocolate" and "Chasing Cars". The album was recorded in the iconic The Joshua Tree National Park in south-eastern California. In October 2010, the band drove out into the desert with their guitars and one or two rough song ideas. Snow Patrol's new adventures seeped into every note on Fallen Empires. The result is an album that promises to redefine the band as an altogether more ambitious, more expansive, creative force.
Florence + the Machine: Ceremonials The new album is the second studio album by the English indie pop band. There are a few shifts in sound with some R & B feel to one and some trancy synths on another and there’s a definate eye on America but otherwise its business as usual: devils, horses, pryers and hearts feature heavily and moodily. the album is reported to be big, soulful and powerful.

AT THE CINEMA JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN
Starring: Rowan Atkinson, Rosamund Pike, Gillian Anderson, Dominic West Top MI7 spy-come-baffoon Johnny English is back in action. Since we last met him, he's been holed up in remote Asia, honing his skills and learning new ones after being sacked from the secret service due to a 'balls up'. But now he's needed back at the forefront of international espionage, as an attempt on the life of the Chinese premier is discovered by his agency bosses. With only days to spare, Johnny must use all his newfound skills to solve a conspiracy mystery at the KGB, the CIA and even at his own Mi7. The trouble with this is that really, it's all been done before. There's nothing new or exciting or even terribly funny in this sequel to the original 2003 Bond-esque parody, save for the closing sequence that shows off some of Atkinson's best moments in the film, but which would be all too easy to miss. Jokes are elaborately set up often to fizzle to nothing, and the reliance on slapstick and pratfalls as compensation would be more tedious than it is were it not for Atkinson's ability to carry
them off. The film works best when it's subtly sending up the eccentricities and cliches of James Bond, and there's a nice touch in English's struggle to adapt to his new working environment with the recently-appointed female head of MI7, played by thinking man's crumpet Gillian Anderson. Atkinson has tried to improve marginally on English's last outing by surrounding himself with some solid acting talent only to criminally underuse the likes of Tim McInery and Rosamund Pike. But in terms of laughs per minute, it falls staggeringly flat, unless you think people walking into stuff is really funny. Overall, although there are some occasional amusing moments, if Johnny English Reborn seems like a lazy attempt to slap a new coat of paint on its predecessor, that's probably because it is. Not so much reborn as rehashed.

Free Electricity! Tax Free income! Here is your Solar Solution. The old hands have become the new kids on the block, Solar Solutions Scotland Ltd have just opened their new office in Helensburgh making them the first Solar company to be registered in the town. Director Stuart Allan gave us some background to this exciting young company. “We have been working in the industry for a couple of years now, cutting our teeth on installations all over Scotland and the North of England as sub contractors to other companies, with a few hundred installations and over 3000 solar panels fitted to date we have certainly got a highly skilled and experienced team at our disposal. We are proud that we do not get call backs due to workmanship, we only ever use fully qualified tradesmen, giving us the ability and flexibility to do whatever it takes, to give our customers exactly what they want. In the past we have built plant rooms, installed loft access and moved Velux windows because that's what the job required”. “My fellow directors, Keni Allan, Andrew Rae, Brendan Thomson and I are driven by our customers, we listen to
what they say and take it all on board. We have been told that some people feel a bit overwhelmed by salesmen and because of this we took the decision to stop using sales teams. We also took the decision to pass on their sales commission to our customers saving them around 10% across all our systems and meaning that we now operate a set price which is below the RRP”. “With Solar Solutions Scotland one of our directors will come to your home, he will carry out a full technical survey, assess the right installation for you, he will design it, spec it and then pass it for fit. You will then get a detailed all inclusive quote with no hidden extras, all your questions will be answered honestly when you ask them and you will be given the details of where to independently verify everything we tell you, all of this is free with no obligation to buy. After all this has been done and where possible that same director will be part of the installation team that comes to fit your panels”. To find out about that free electricity and tax free income call Solar Solutions Scotland Ltd or log on to their web site (details on advert below) for free and friendly advice.

TRAVEL CROATIA - SAIL TO THE ISLANDS
Croatia is fringed with over 1000 islands, an amazing sight, especially from the air - lush emerald green, long, thin or perfectly circular, bordered by white cliffs and beaches, crisscrossed by tiny ribbons of road that seem to lead to nowhere. One could spend a week or more sailing through this romantic seascape but stay in one of the glorious Dalmatian resorts and you can cruise for a day on a nostalgic galleon, dropping anchor here and there to explore a few of these offshore gems. Mljet in the south is wild and unspoilt, two thirds of the island covered in forest. The name means ‘honey isle’ and some claim this is where the nymph Calypso kept Ulysses spellbound for seven years. A few fishing villages are sprinkled along the shore while part of the island is protected by a National Park. There are two lovely saltwater lakes, shimmering turquoise and blue, and shaded trails fragrant with pines. Also accessed
from Dubrovnik is the Elaphite archipelago, a haven of pine forests and olive groves. Only three of the islands are inhabited, including Lopud, famous for sands, rare in Dalmatia, and Kolocep, barely 300 residents but claiming seven pre-Romanesque churches. Slightly further out into the Adriatic, Vis is the last inhabited Croatian island before Italy, with mountains rising to nearly 2000 feet and vineyards spreading in fertile valleys. Set in central Dalmatia, Vis boasts some of the best wine in the country, such as the red Plava and the honey-coloured Vugava, excellent with freshlycaught fish or lobster. The island has two small townships, Vis, where a medley of architecture reflects a turbulent past and Komiza, where boats head for the romantic Blue Lagoon on nearby Bisevo.

Of course, you could spend a whole day sailing through this enchanting maze without landing at all, gazing at dolphins pirouetting in the waves and rugged mountains towering on the mainland, but when the boat approaches Hvar, even the most jaded traveller is keen to explore. Havr greets you with the fairytale town of Jelsa, all donkey and cycle rides, fishing nets drying in the alleyways, rose gardens, sunflowers, waterside restaurants and pastel-hued Ve n e t i a n p a l a c e s dipping their toes in the sea. The fragrance of lavender lingers on the square and now and then a whiff of Croatian folklore echoes under the parasols. It’s well worth leaving the crowds to wander through the lanes for a glimpse of local life and to the chapel on the hillock for the breath-taking panorama.

From the resort of Baska Voda, it’s just under two hours to Hvar but the return trip includes a stop on Brac, the largest island in central Dalmatia, world famous for the local stone used to build the White House in Washington. Bol is a pretty little town with red roofs and white walls nestling around the harbour. It’s a couple of miles to the beach, by land train or on foot, along a shaded promenade where souvenir stalls sell lace and Brac stone turned into clocks or candle holders. Finally you reach the long broad spit of the Golden Cape, jutting out into the sea, a favourite spot for windsurfers and sun worshippers. The pebbles are as white as the stone and the water is beautifully clear but in the distance the galleon beckons, ready to conclude the cruise in time for a perfect Adriatic sunset.

GOLF TIP Fine Tune Your Tempo
Go from too fast or too slow to just right and watch your shots soar high, far and straight. This drill is for you if: · You both slice and hook, and you never know why · You make contact toward the heel or toe more than on the sweet spot · You don’t have a ‘go-to’ swing, especially when the pressure is on Few swing fundamentals are more overlooked than tempo (the consistency of the pace at which you swing your club). Tempo is a difficult concept to grasp – there’s more to it than swinging your club faster or slower. You need to feel it, in the same way that you developed your natural walking pace, you need to find your natural swing speed or your motion will lack the smooth, rhythmic feel associated with solid ball striking.
Use this exercise to find perfect swing tempo: Tee up four balls in a row. Address the one closest to you and hit it at 25 percent of your standard swing speed. Immediately, move to the next ball. This time, make a swing at 50 percent speed. Hit the third ball at 75 percent speed and the last at full throttle. Perform this drill a few times. Focus on the feel of the different speeds, and keep in mind that your goal is to not slow down or speed up your swing in order to hit your ball longer or straighter. Your objective with this drill is to become familiar with different tempos and to learn to coordinate the movement of your body and your club to produce solid contact at any tempo. That’s what creates consistently long and straight shots. You can’t stick to a single tempo for every swing. Every day on the course is different. Your body is different, your swing is different, and the course and weather are different. To play your best you must discover what tempo – faster or slower – will work for that day.

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9. That’s all there is too it. There’s no math involved. The grid has numbers, but nothing has to add up to anything else. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic. It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive! Solving time is typically 10 to 30 minutes, depending on your skill and experience.

INTERIORS WARM UP FOR WINTER When long nights and frosty mornings make it feel as if winter is never going to end, it’s time to cosy up with a blazing fire, warm radiators or a welcoming stove. Katherine Sorrell’s ideas for overhauling your heating will help you make it through till next summer… There’s no doubt that we’re all going to be thinking carefully about how we heat our homes this coming winter and sensible measures such as good insulation, draught excluders and thermostats will help keep both costs and CO2 emissions down. But no matter how many extra jumpers we put on, there’s bound to come a time when we can’t do without some form of home heating. And since we’ve got to pay for it, we might as well make sure that it’s as efficient and attractive as possible. First: the traditional fireplace. Many of us have one and it’s usually a focal point of a living room despite the fact that open fires are shockingly poor heat producers, operating at around just 15-20% energy efficiency. If your fireplace as a whole is unappealing (whether or not you want to use the fire as a form of heating), you can usually update it relatively easily just by changing the surround, hearth and/or mantelpiece: altering the colours, materials and proportions really does make a world of difference. If you haven’t got a chimney, though, the good news is that you can still have a fire. Balanced flue gas fires require a gas supply and an outside wall on which to mount the fire, while powerflue (or fan flue) gas fires have the same requirements, and also need mains electricity. No outside wall? No problem. Electric fires can be used regardless of chimneys, flues and outside walls, and can look surprisingly attractive compared to the ghastly models of old. And some gas fires use a catalytic converter to turn combustion gases into harmless carbon dioxide, so no flue is required. Because no energy is lost through the flue, they are also 100% heat-efficient.
attention-grabbers: traditional styles have timeless appeal, while hole-in-the-wall or centrepiece versions fit wonderfully into a modern setting. And by burning wood from sustainable, local sources you’re not increasing your carbon emissions (for more information, go to www.nef.org.uk/logpile). Last, but not least, if you’ve got central heating, don’t forget your radiators. Are they giving off enough heat for the room? You can help prevent heat loss especially on an outside wall by fitting tin foil (or special radiator reflectors) behind them to reflect the heat back in. But if they’re simply not effective enough then consider replacing them with a more powerful version, perhaps in a dramatic modern style or in a classic column shape. They’re not cheap, but they are both practical and goodlooking, and will last you many long winters yet to come.
The big news in heating at the moment, however, is the wood-burning stove. In looks alone, they’re huge To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

Dress your home for winter with layers of cosiness Throw down a deep pile rug to add extra softness and a sense of warmth underfoot. Swap sheer, pale, lightweight curtains or blinds for something heavier wool, tweed, velvet, even felt, denim or mohair. On sofas and armchairs, pile up cushions for a sense of cosy luxury and add a throw or two folded over the back: great for snuggling under. You could use a length of tweed edged with velvet ribbon, chunky knitting or crochet, fake fur or soft fleece. Replace pale bed linen with sheets or a duvet cover in a deeper shade. Add quilts, eiderdowns, bedcovers, throws and blankets. Feature walls may no longer be cutting edge, but they’re still good looking: paint one wall of a living room or bedroom in warm, boldly coloured emulsion it’s easy enough to paint over again if you get bored with it. Shampooch is a newly opened full service dog grooming parlour in Dalsetter Avenue and is run by dog fanatic Shannon Burke.
Dogs respond better to being groomed when they are not rushed and can relax between steps. Now the time consuming steps are over, we can relax and enjoy the final clipping. Most body work is done with the clippers and all heads and tails are scissored.
Shannon trained at the pampered pets training school after she finished college and is now both delighted and excited with her new venture. With a real passion for dogs and dog grooming she is steadily building a strong clientele. The unit is already busy with returning customers who love the relaxed environment that Shampooch has created along with the most up to date grooming equipment including hydraulic tables, impact dryers, custom made bathing facilities and many state of the art tools and products. Shannon tells us “The grooming parlor is not a traumatic event for your pet. He/she is getting plenty of attention and TLC! You could compare your pets experience with a visit to a spa!” Grooming your dog takes time. When ready for their bath, initial clipping is done by removing any excess body hair. A gentle brush followed by a fine tooth comb, the nails are also clipped at this time. The bath consists of a thorough shampooing with mild shampoo and complete rinse. (We have various different products for each individual dog). Flea treatment is used as necessary and other preparations are used at owners’ request. After the bath your dog is thoroughly dried and brushed so the hair is tangle free. Your dog will now have a rest with a drink of water.
Shampooch facilitate for any size pooch and all breeds. Special care and attention to nervous and elderly dogs is top priority at the parlour along with the highest possible standard of customer service and always ensuring that the animal's welfare and health comes first. Shampooch also offer show and pet cuts and are happy to pick up and drop off your pet once they have been pampered. Evening appointments are also available for clients. New loyalty cards are now up and running which offer discounts for loyal customers and even a FREE groom! Shannon goes on to say “We know your dog is an important member of your family if not the most important, and we promise to make him/her feel safe and comfortable while in our care.”

BEAUTY HEAVENLY HAIR We all know that great hair is the best accessory you can ever have, so that’s why it’s so important to keep it in tip-top condition and looking fabulous. For most of us though, this is easier said than done. With so many things ‘out to get’ our hair, just keeping it frizz-free and vaguely manageable from day to day is an effort. The prospect of attaining any sort of smooth silky condition seems unlikely. But there is hope. This winter signals the perfect time to initiate a dedicated and committed hair-care routine. Investing time, patience and energy in your locks means that you can be rewarded with glossy lengths of Rapunzel-esque proportions. The main problem we all face, especially at this time of year, is the damage caused by the elements. Harsh weather conditions outside and centrally heated rooms inside sap moisture from the hair, leaving it dry, split and unsightly. But what makes it far worse is the damage caused by trying to achieve a smooth finish when we reach for the straighteners and turn up the heat. It’s a quick fix for hair now, but in the long run it’s a big problem. Regular use of styling tools weakens the hair, causing it to split and break. Applying a good quality heat protecting mist onto your lengths does help to limit damage, but the bottom line is that any intense heat isn’t a good thing. So cut back where you can. Blow-drying is undeniably essential for adding lift, volume and shape to your tresses, but unfortunately can prove to be as damaging as any other heated tool.
It’s essential to dry on a cool heat setting and always allow hair to ‘towel-dry’ for as long as possible beforehand. Be extra careful with wet hair, as it’s at its weakest. Using a good quality hairbrush will ensure easy styling particularly natural bristle brushes, as these will be extra gentle and encourage shine. Investing in quality products from your hairdresser may be expensive but will certainly have a lasting impact. It’s always best to seek professional advice on establishing a tailored product plan for your hair.

Although most come with a hefty price tag, protein-rich shampoos and conditioners are excellent at re-building the structure of your hair and creating strength and shine.
fantastic and well worth the wait, so be patient.
It’s easy to become cynical about products and it’s certainly true that a lot of money can be wasted on them, but find the one that’s right for you and you’ll never go back.
A healthy head of hair is the starting point that everyone needs to make the most of their colour, cut or style. So transform yours now and never w o r r y about a b a d h a i r d a y again
What’s more, better products need only be used sparingly as they are packed full of rich ingredients, so they last a long time and can offer better value for money. Good health is essential for good hair. We all feel rundown at this time of year and with the annual bouts of colds and flu ready to strike, hair can become dull, lifeless and lacking in the nutrients required to look its silky and shiny best. Stocking up on vitamins, fresh fruit and vegetables, not to mention protein rich foods, lots of omega 3 and sources of iron, all go a long way to nourish the hair from the inside out. It takes around three months to see the effect of a healthy diet on your hair, but the results are

MOTORS SAVING MONEY
Your car is likely the second biggest purchase you ever make - so it’s vital you protect that investment. Just as you wouldn’t let a leaky roof or broken guttering fester on your house, you need to pay regular attention to your car to keep it in good working order too. And it’s not just about a bucket and sponge. Simple maintenance tasks can preserve your car’s life and its value at resale time. The difference between a car in ‘excellent’ and ‘below average’ condition can be £1,000, according to trade valuation experts, so it really pays to look after your motor. Here are some practical tips to help you save money in the long run. It’s amazing how many motorists don’t even know how to check their oil, let alone remember to top it up. However, failing to do so will have dire consequences. Check it fortnightly, making sure the car is on level ground, engine cold and the level is between minimum and maximum. Check coolant levels too and get any abnormal noises or poor performance problems checked by an expert. Air We Go Air-conditioning needs regular attention. Topping up the system with gas and lubricating it will cost around £70 at a garage and should be done every two years.
This will stop unpleasant smells and bacteria forming. Poorly serviced systems have to work harder, putting undue strain on the engine. At Your Service The recession saw many motorists skip servicing to try and save money. This really is a false economy. Sticking to your car’s maintenance schedule will ensure it’s working properly, prevent failures and prove it’s been looked after at resale time. Keep every receipt and old MOT, as well as a stamped-up service book for the next owner.

Fuel’s Gold It might look like a costly alternative to regular fuel, but the AA says a few tanks of super unleaded can help preserve your engine. Using three tanks of super in succession will clean injectors and allow the engine to run more efficiently, helping preserve its working life. Tyred Out The penalty for driving on illegal tyres (under 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters) is a fine and three points. Inspect your car’s boots weekly for damage, remove stones in the tread and look for signs of uneven wear. Pressures should be checked monthly too preserving the tyre’s life, and your fuel economy.
comprehensive clean can add £600 to a car’s value. Hose Down A vital part of the car cleaning procedure is to hose the car down before washing. This removes fine particles of grit that can scratch the paintwork as you wash. These scratches will make your paint look dull and hazy, putting off future buyers. Wheel-ie Good Idea Invest in a quality wheel cleaning brush and wheel cleaner to shift stubborn stains. Apply a coat of wheel wax which will stop future grime taking hold. Used car buyers love alloy wheels, but only if they’re in good condition.
Easy Does It The way you drive can dramatically affect how long your car will last. Driving with care, avoiding harsh acceleration and hard braking will reduce wear on components. It’s also worth thinking, do you need to make that trip? Lower mileage cars are worth more. Polished Off Cleaning your car regularly with quality products is the best way to preserve its value. TECH GUIDE THE HEAT IS ON No matter how cold it is outside, there are plenty of ways to stay toasty this winter - but before you go shopping, it’s important to know what’s available and what will work best for you. One of the simplest ways to heat a room is an electric heater. These come in three formats: fan heaters such as the Dimplex DXGLO2, which blow air over a heating element to blast you with warm air; convection heaters such as the Delonghi HCM2020, which have less powerful fans (or no fan at all) and waft rather than blast warm air; and oil heaters such as the Pifco PE136, which are filled with oil that’s heated to create an effect very like a traditional central heating radiator. There are several advantages to such radiators: they’re portable, they’re very cheap to buy and they’re widely available. However, some are so low-powered they’re effectively useless. A 400W panel heater will struggle to keep even a small room warm and if you buy one without a timer you’ll have to remember to turn it on/off manually. Many models do include integrated timers, but be careful if you’re putting one near a bed: the timer mechanisms can be noisy. For bedtime, an electric blanket may be a better choice: even at their peak they only draw several hundred watts of energy. Fan heaters can be extremely noisy, and heaters of all kinds can be expensive to run: at the time of writing, the cost of running a 2kW heater on our current electricity tariff would be 22p-52p per hour. Over a long winter that soon adds up, so it’s important to use the right size of heater for your room and to cut the thermostat so you’re not using more energy than you need. The same applies to gas heaters: check the heater’s energy use in kilowatts - a 4.2 kilowatt gas heater will go through four times more gas than a 1 kilowatt model.
One way to cut the cost of energy is to avoid heating things that don’t need heated. Traditional heaters heat the air in an entire room, so you’re effectively paying to heat bits where you aren’t sitting. That’s not really a problem inside your house, but if you want to be toasty while you’re working in the garage or any other large, open area you don’t want to spend money heating the entire room. For more selective heating jobs, infra-red heaters such as Dimplex’s IRX50n are a better idea - although they heat a very narrow area, so positioning is crucial. Such heaters only heat what they’re pointing at, not the air around them, so they can potentially save money but if you’re outside their effective range, you don’t get any heat at all. Once again wattage is crucial here: a 500W model will be fine for a working area, but larger spaces will require more powerful heating. Another option is to beef up the heating you already have. A radiator booster can cut a few hundred pounds f r o m y o u r electricity bill, and it’s a deceptively simple bit of kit: a long fan sits on top of your radiator and circulates the warming air through your room. That means the room feels warmer faster, and you can turn off the heating more quickly. They cost £19.99 from USwitch.com, who say the booster will cost “around 13p for 500 hours use.”

GARDENING
KITCHENS FOR LIVING
HEDGE YOUR BOUNDARY By Pipa Greenwood Marking your garden boundary with a hedge rather than a wall or fence helps to provide more gardening opportunities plus the living boundary may also be a real boon for wildlife, so if you’re thinking garden boundaries, think hedging. If you want a garden boundary that looks good and is green in all senses of the word, then you can’t go far wrong with a hedge. Hedges are generally grown from containergrown plants (bought at any time of year, with well-established root system and living in a pot) or from ‘bare root’ plants which are perfect bought at this time of year and planted straight away. Bare root hedging is not an option available for every type of plant. Some garden centres offer it, but generally for the freshest plants and widest selection you’re better going to a hedging specialist nursery. These plants are often quite small, but great value and soon romp away, providing you with a lowcost good looking hedge. So which should you choose? Here are some of which I’m especially fond: Hornbeam: This deciduous tree makes great classic hedging and in the autumn leaves turn an attractive bright yellow. It’s long-lived and once established makes a good hedge for roosting birds. It’s easy to keep trimmed and dense, its only downside being few leaves remain in winter. Does well in sun or part shade. Beech: A tough and hardy deciduous tree that makes a great hedge. Great kept neatly clipped for a formal look. Although it does shed its leaves, they turn a wonderful tan-brown towards the end of autumn and a high percentage remain on the plants until new leaves appear in springtime. Native Hedging (including hawthorn, wild rose, guilder rose, blackthorn): Perfect for a more rural look with lots of wildlife. Native hedging is often available as a mixed selection of suitable plants, all the above planted randomly along the hedge line make a great mixed deciduous hedge which will provide shelter, nesting
sites and nectar from the attractive flowers and food from the various hips and berries. Yew: Perfect for a more formal hedging. It’s evergreen and its narrow dark green leaves make a great backdrop for plants within the garden. Unlike most other evergreen hedging, if it’s allowed to grow out of hand, it does respond well to being cut back quite hard. Avoid damp sites and remember that although the end result looks great, this is one of the slower growing hedging plants. Prunus laurocerasus: Also known as the cherry laurel, it’s a large-leafed evergreen which forms a very good, dense hedge. It produces small, pretty white flowers, but if you clip the hedge regularly you rarely see many of them. The leaves are a light, glossy green, avoiding the sombre feeling some evergreen hedges can bring. Thuja plicata: Known as the western red cedar, the variety ‘Atrovirens’ makes a particularly good evergreen hedge. It grows reasonably rapidly and is often used when one would like some aspects of a Leyland hedge but wouldn’t want its potential to get out of hand. The foliage produces a gorgeous pineapple aroma when crushed.

Berberis including B.darwinii: Another very dense and attractive hedge, deciduous, semi-evergreen or evergreen depending on which you choose. Berberis has plenty of spines too so is often used in ‘defensive’ planting. The flowers are small but very pretty in shades of orange and yellow. Avoid very wet soils. Euonymus japonica: A great hedging plant with evergreen leaves, many with attractive variegations bringing extra colour and interest to the boundary. Avoid a wet soil and choose a sunny or partly shaded spot, making sure that the soil does not become too dry in summer. Photinia x fraseri: This evergreen shrub makes an interesting hedge and if you choose a variety such as ‘Red Robin’, you can enjoy flamboyant red patches of colour throughout the hedge in the spring as new growth is wonderfully coloured. Does best in a fertile soil with plenty of sun or part shade. Whichever of these fantastic options takes your fancy, don’t forget the planting basics: Plant container grown hedging plants nearly any time of year, avoiding very wet, cold or dry weather.
Plant bare-root hedging at any time that it is available, mainly late autumn to late winter or very early spring. Prepare the ground by forking in bulky organic matter such as garden compost, bagged compost or wellrotted manure. is best planted with each plant about 45cm (18in) apart along the row. For a denser hedge plant in two staggered rows, each row about 30-45cm apart. Don’t forget to keep the young hedge properly pruned if left to grow it alone, it’ll rarely become good and dense.
Sign up for Pippa’s newsletter at www.pippagreenwood.com and you’ll receive a free e-book on organic gardening. Her website also offers a stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift card, a perfect gift where the recipient receives their chosen garden ready veg plants in the spring. Every week Pippa emails with topical hints, tips and advice. Vouchers priced from just £39 for up to 66 garden-ready plants, 6 packets of seed and the weekly emails.

The Listening Post Hearing Matters Advice Column I am delighted to announce the launch of a local hearing care service in Anniesland, within the practice of C Lambert Opticians. We are also starting this advice column which will appear in future issues of the directory. My first advice is to be hearing aware. Some nine million people in UK are deaf or hard of hearing and only a fraction of this number take positive action. Sometimes the progress of the hearing loss is so slow that the sufferer isn’t even aware of its onset.
Do you often ask people to repeat themselves? Do you find you need the TV turned up louder than others find comfortable? Do you have trouble hearing in a café, pub or restaurant? Do you often comment that it would be okay If only people wouldn’t mumble?
If you answer yes to any of these you may be experiencing the onset of hearing loss. If you suspect that this is the case for you or for a member of your family I would advise you to have a screening test at our new practice, this would take only a few minutes and is free of charge. It includes a physical examination of your ear, which could point out a the simple fact that it may just be ear wax. Thank you for reading the first advice column, I hope you found it helpful. For further service please see the details on our advert below.

BOOKS CHILDREN IN NEED Recent years have seen a massive rise in the popularity of books depicting tortured childhoods - and although this may not be the happiest of subjects, many of these titles are fascinating, well-written and extremely emotive. This month, to celebrate Children in Need, we’ve put together a selection of the best books in this genre. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou An incredible story about the transformation of a quiet racism victim into a selfassured and confident young woman. As the first in a six volume series, here Maya Angelou tells the tale of her coming-of-age in awful circumstances, but finds strength in the birth of her son to discover her inner voice and passion for independence.
Breaking Night by Liz Murray Born to an addict father and a mother who spent most of her daughter’s childhood in and out of a mental institute, Liz Murray ended up on the streets of New York at the tender age of 15. Desperate to salvage her life from turning into that of her parents, the author recounts her tale of how she enrolled in school, achieved a scholarship from the New York Times and went on to graduate from Harvard. A truly inspirational read.
First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers by Loung Ung Penned by a survivor of the Pol Pot regime, Loung Ung spent the first part of her childhood growing up in comfort as the daughter of a Government Official, but when the Khmer Rouge stormed Phnom Penn in 1975, her life was transformed beyond belief. This title recalls her life in work camps, separated from her family and friends, and being trained as a child soldier, as she somehow found the bravery to fight on in search of a new life.
Bad Blood by Lorna Sage A fantastic memoir depicting three generations of the Sage family, and the family history which led to her own mother’s belief that Lorna was born with “bad blood”. Fear not, there is light at the end of the tunnel as Lorna’s life turns around with the arrival of a new husband, baby and university and life away from the miserable Shropshire village she calls home.
