Tracing Your Family Tree Once you have pieced together an outline, start verifying the details by checking them against official records. Certificates have been recorded for every birth, marriage and death since 1837 and copies of these can be viewed in county archives or the National A r c h i v e s i n L o n d o n www.nationalarchives.gov.uk. Certificates are also available from numerous online sites. These certificates provide a wealth of knowledge including ages, occupations and the true full names of people. Useful sites are: www.findmypast.co.uk, www.genuki.org.uk and www.ancestry.co.uk. Organising your research is vital. You can do this on paper or use your PC with one of the many family tree software packages on the market.
Tracing your family history is a fascinating and absorbing hobby that can throw up surprising results. With increased interest in this pastime, many new tools and strategies have made it easy to search for your ancestors, especially online. If you’re inspired to trace your family tree the first step is to record your own knowledge. Note the full names, dates of birth, marriage details and geographical information of as many of your family members as possible. Once you’ve exhausted your own store of data, ask other members of your family for further details. Start with your parents, grandparents and anyone else you can, but do this as tactfully as possible. Remember, certain details may be distressing to some people. Often though, it’s these conversations that lead you to delve deeper into your history and that’s when interesting findings arise. Don’t necessarily take everything you’re told as fact. Details such as dates and events can become muddled by memory and time. People’s names can also be confusing: your great-grandfather may be commonly referred to as Jack, but the name on his birth certificate might actually be William John.
Census returns should form a large part of your research too as they provide a massive insight into the lives of your ancestral family. Census records from 1841 to 1911 are available online via the sites above. Through the census returns you can find out information regarding people’s jobs, family relationships and how life was at the time. Another useful website is www.genesreunited.co.uk which gives you access to other people researching branches of your tree. Once you have as much of your tree completed as possible, upload it here and it will be compared to others and updates will be emailed to you. People can also contact you for further information on your tree and it’s this collaboration that can produce some amazing breakthroughs. You may discover family members you didn’t know existed! If you do grind to a halt and this is extremely likely at some point there are plenty of professional genealogists who can help. You can find one near you by looking at www.genealogistfinder.com. This is especially useful if someone in your family emigrated to America, Australia or New Zealand. It’s never too late to trace your family tree. The sooner you start, the bigger it will grow.

New Music Review Goldfrapp: Head First Electro-pop duo Goldfrapp wrapped work on their fifth album Head First (due March 9th) just a few weeks ago. Head First has an edge that’s softer, warmer and dreamier than Goldfrapp’s Dance Chart-topping club bangers like “Ooh La La. Head First promises a “speedy rush of synth optimism, euphoria, fantasy and romance.” The first single off the album is “Rocket”, with a very catchy 80’s pop sound and is currently getting considerable airplay - a sure fire hit.
Alphabeat: The Spell Two years ago Alphabeat released an awesome album which paid tribute to the 80s, with an impressive sense of fun and melody. Now the Danish band are back with The Spell. “The Spell” represents a totally new era of sound for Alphabeat, a complete departure from the sugary-sweet 80’s bubblegum pop they brought to their classic self-titled 2007 debut. “The Spell,” as they’ve said themselves, is heavily inspired by 90’s-dance & pop music, lots of heavy synth, electro-warbling, and pulsing bass.
Paul Weller: Wake up the nation Paul Weller returns on April 12 with new album 'Wake Up The Nation'. He's hailed it as "political with a small 'p'" . While it probably won't dissuade his dad rock-hating critics, the album is effectively the sound of one of the most accomplished songwriters ever enjoying himself in the studio and striving to push his music into the least predictable places possible. After the triumphant, Brit-bagging success of 22 Dreams (his third solo number one), Wake Up The Nation album sees rock's most iconic songwriter come up trumps once more.
The Courteeners: Falcon When they initially arrived on the scene in 2007, The Courteeners quickly revealed that they were little more than one-trick ponies with the release of their debut LP ‘St Jude’. Now 'Falcon' is the second album from Manchester based outfit The Courteeners. The album sees the four piece build upon their sound, creating a set of impressive soaring indie anthems with Liam Fray's everyman lyrics at the forefront. The album is preceded by the single 'You Overdid It Doll'. Tacitly hailed as lad rock saviors. To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

From building ponds to pulling weeds, the range of topics discussed is varied, and readers will not only be delighted with the advice, but will also enjoy the lively conversation between four of Britain’s most popular gardening personalities.
On Guerrilla Gardening: A Handbook for Gardening without Boundaries Forget planting things in an allotment, this book is fundamental to the revolution of transforming wasted public space into a bountiful paradise. Fascinating and eye-opening, it’s a brilliant read.

Bishopbriggs Directory: The Local Directory at the heart of the community
“I never knew so many businesses existed within the area.”
between the two directories of 25,000 homes throughout East Dunbartonshire and surrounding areas.
This remark has been made time and time again in relation to the Bishopbriggs Directory. Since April 2006 the Bishopbriggs Directory has gone from just an idea to firmly establishing itself as the magazine for the local area. Starting off with just 2000 copies, the directory has expanded over the 4 years to now cover 12,500 homes throughout Bishopbriggs, Robroyston, Auchinairn, Colston and Torrance. Containing a mixture of editorials, adverts and articles, as well as local information and events, the Bishopbriggs Directory regularly receives positive feedback from the residents and advertisers alike.
Step Out of the Box…
Truly Local Local residents like to support local businesses: local businesses need the support of local residents. The vast majority of our advertisers live, work or have connections within our distribution area. Many of these businesses don’t have a ‘shop front’ - they’re small independents who use a home office, and Bishopbriggs Directory is one of the few affordable ways they can promote their business to a local audience. By using them you are truly supporting your local community. A sister directory covering Bearsden & Milngavie started in March 2007 which gives total coverage
… and get noticed. Adverts are visible and never lost on a page, even if people are skim reading. There are never more than four adverts on a page and there are limited advertisers within each business category, to ensure that no-one becomes “lost” in a long list of competitors. Editorial features are available, if you want to tell readers about your business in more detail. We also offer leaflet drops along with the directory.
Shelf Life The Bishopbriggs Directory has excellent shelf life, the relevance of the editorial and advertising content, as well as local information, means it is in constant use. Residents keep it as a reference point until they get the next issue, thereby giving advertisers immediate access when their services are required. This is really important because although some people may require services immediately, most will not, but will subconsciously retain the names of adverts they find eye-catching and notice often. This is why repetitive advertising usually yields the best results: it keeps your name prominent and at the forefront of peoples minds. If you think that advertising in either the Bishopbriggs Directory or Bearsden & Milngavie Directory could benefit your company then please call either Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210.

What our advertisers say................. “Brilliant! We have seen a dramatic increase in business since advertising in the directories. They get delivered when they should and where they should, unlike some other “mags” that we have used in the past. The professional image the directory delivers benefits every existing or potential customers. Noel Daly P & N Bathrooms “I have been advertising my company since December 2006 in the Bishopbriggs Directory and have found the business that it generates to be very rewarding. I would recommend it to any new or established business that is looking for new customers in the Bishopbriggs area.” Paul Strang Masteroofing “I have been advertising in the Bishopbriggs Directory since the first issue and I’m really pleased with the increasing number of enquiries the advert is generating.” Ian Budd, PC Doctor “I have been advertising with the Bishopbriggs Directory since the first issue and I am pleased to say that I have had a large return on my investment. Scott & Natalie are efficient, creative and professional and the publication is the ideal medium for the clientele I seek. I’ve been advertising with Scott & Natalie since I started my business in 2006 and Iv’e found it to be a very cost effective way of getting my name out there and seen! if you’re thinking of advertising in the directory I’d definitely recommend it. Keep up the good work guy’s! Grace Callan Grace Callan Photography “We have been advertising since day one and we know it works. People phone or come in and say they’ve seen us in the Directory that they have had delivered through their door.” Rosh Bagha Shimla Palace “Last year we spent a large percentage of our advertising budget on well known publications such as Yellow Pages with mediocre results but in comparison, the budget spent on both the Bishopbriggs Directory and its sister publication, the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory proved invaluable - consistently producing more local enquires than any other of the larger nationwide publications. It remains our favourite way to generate valued local customers. There are many imitators of this style of local magazine advertising which have sprung up recently, but Scott and Natalie have the original formula that works with the publication and its results are underpinned with their professional creativity and good old fashioned but necessary hard work. I would look to advertise in any future publications they may create.” Iain Penman Penman Architectural Plans

The Nissan Cube
distinct sections, a shot of a Jacuzzi flashed up on the screen. And I kid you not, we were told: ‘When the designer was on holiday enjoying a Jacuzzi with five other people he decided that he wanted to shape the interior of the Cube like that.’ That’s exactly what he said. I know that because writing it down was the only thing I could do to stop myself bursting out in fits of laughter. And considering his straight face that would have been like laughing at a funeral.
Nissan GT-Ri
Take one look at the Cube and you realise this is no ordinary car, so you could hardly expect a normal press conference. It’s just mad to look at with that wraparound rear window on one side (which changes sides depending on left or right hand drive), and that boxy shape. The Cube is relatively new to the UK, but this is in fact the third generation of a car which first hit the streets in 1998. Since then, Nissan has shifted one million units worldwide – quite a feat when you take into account its wacky looks have probably put off many more.
What do Jennifer Lopez’s behind, a bulldog wearing sunglasses and a Jacuzzi have in common? No, they’re not part of a set from a soon-to-be released topshelf movie, but design cues on which Japanese scribblers styled parts of the new Nissan Cube. Seriously, how much sake must Nissan’s pen pushers have drunk to come up with a car that resembled any one of those three random objects? I’m guessing more than a lunchtime snifter. It might sound completely random – and believe me it was – but every one of them were mentioned at the launch of the first officially-imported Cube to arrive in the UK. With a completely straight face and deadpan delivery, Nissan’s man from Japan, told us how the front end of the Cube, with a dark black strip across the lights, had been modelled on a pet pooch. Where said designer saw one wearing sunglasses was beyond me, but then I remembered this car hails from Japan where suction cup hats to stop your head bobbing around on trains as you sleep is normal.
But if you Google the Cube you’ll soon realise in its home country this is more than just a car; it’s a lifestyle. Personalisation of the little city runabout is rife with graphics, big wheels and mad engine mods, making it much like the MINI is over here. And with this new model, Nissan hopes to bring some of that personalisation to the UK. The options list for the Cube includes dramatic graphics and car tattoos that the manufacturer hopes buyers will use to make the Cube their own. What’s more, every year this brochure of extras will be updated with a new range so those modifications can continue or be changed Nissan hopes this will draw buyers back into dealers again and again for even more extras.
I had to stifle a laugh when our speaker announced the bulbous back end had been shaped to resemble pop idol J-Lo’s derriere. He actually meant it! If this speech had been delivered on April 1 the assembled hacks would have walked out at the start. But then, as he described the round-shaped interior that boasts four To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

The manufacturer hopes the Cube will primarily appeal to design savvy consumers. But to be honest, as much as the tofu-eating flower lovers would like to keep the Cube for themselves, I’ve got a feeling they’ll have a hard job on their hands. It’s a brilliant car that will appeal to old and young alike. Rivals like the Kia Soul have sold well to a huge cross section of buyers and the Cube is certain to appeal to customers wanting to stand out from the crowd. They’ll be able to pick from two engines at launch: A 1.5-litre dCi with 110bhp, 240Nm of torque, a handy 54mpg and emissions of 135g/km. Or a 1.6-litre petrol unit that also produces 110bhp, but 153Nm of torque, 42.8mpg and emissions slightly higher at 151g/km. The diesel commands a £1,200 premium over the £14,000 base model.
More impressive, though, is the specification list. For that £14k, buyers get 16-inch alloys, glass roof, air con, Bluetooth, cruise control, keyless start, ESP and a CD player. Try asking for all that as standard on a MINI…
By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)
Both are equally impressive. Punchy and reasonably refined, they’re a great match for the car’s agile handling. With its wheel-in-each corner design, maneuvering around clogged city streets is a doddle too. Inside the high-sided doors and dash make it feel a little van-like, but it’s open and airy. Other complaints? Well, the seats numbed legs extremely quickly and the steering was a little too light for motorway work.

The cost of entry is £40 per pair, with entries contributing to the Golf Foundation, the charity which nurtures the game at junior level throughout the British Isles.
Your Country Needs You! Sign Up for a “Ryder Cup Moment” Golfers throughout the British Isles are being given a unique opportunity to play for their countries and at the same time help grow the game at junior level. The Four Nations Golf Challenge, potentially the most exciting pairs competition for amateur club golfers ever devised, offers the mouth-watering prize of a “Ryder Cup” style finale on one of Europe's most challenging courses. Open to men and ladies, The Four Nations Golf Challenge will culminate in a Grand Final to be contested by four teams of 12 players representing England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales at The Oxfordshire Golf Club in the Chiltern Hills from 17-20 October 2010. To earn their chance to represent the Champion Golf Nation of the Year, a pair will need to win a maximum of four four-ball, better-ball matches, starting in May, in regional brackets consisting of 16 pairs each. If necessary, depending on the number of entries, a oneday final qualifying event will be held in September to decide which six pairs will represent their country in the Grand Final. Roger Brady, Director of organisers Concierge Golf, said: “Even though several national knock-out competitions for amateur golfers take place each year, there are none, as far as we are aware, that offer the chance of an 'international team' appearance to club golfers of all standards.”
Golf Foundation Chief Executive, Mike Round, said: “The Four Nations Golf Challenge is not only an attractive and stimulating amateur golf tournament, but is helping to generate revenue for the Golf Foundation. By supporting this unique event, all clubs and members will help to raise much needed funds for 'grass roots' golf.” Roger Brady added: “We are delighted to have the Golf Foundation as an associate partner and to support the work they do promoting the sporting and social development of children and young people through golf.” The Oxfordshire, a spectacular rolling layout designed by Rees Jones and owned by the Leaderboard Group which also includes Chart Hills, Dale Hill and Sandford Springs, is about to open its own four-star hotel where every participant will stay free of charge throughout the Grand Final. Having hosted many professional tournaments, including the Benson & Hedges International Open on the European Tour from 1996-99, The Oxfordshire will provide a proven setting for club golfers to experience the passion and thrill of playing for their countries for the first time. As Roger Brady says: “Just think: it could be you on the last day, all square in the deciding match, your teammates behind the final green willing you on to hole the putt that gives your country victory! Where else could you feel that 'Ryder Cup moment'?” Entries are open to every golfer with a club handicap and will close on 30th April 2010. For tournament registration or any other queries, please click on to www.fournationsgolfchallenge.co.uk or call Roger Brady on 01858 462706.

Technology Review Portable Computing Portable computing is smaller and lighter than ever, but what's the difference between laptops, netbooks and tablets? What are the advantages of a laptop, what should you look out for in a netbook and why might you want a tablet? Camilla Chafer explores the options
LAPTOPS
NETBOOKS
Desktop PCs once took up space in the home, now they’ve been replaced by laptops. Laptops take up far less space and are portable enough to work anywhere, making them now the home computer of choice. However, laptops are facing stiff competition with the advent of smaller devices such as netbooks.
A netbook is a very small laptop. Screen sizes are smaller, usually under 12 inches, as are keyboards. Netbooks are more limited in specifications and are less powerful and web pages aren’t always easily viewable on the smallest models screens. The big plus in t h e i r favour is that a netbook can be simply put in a bag and barely take up any space - great for those who want flexibility in where they work without having to carry a larger laptop. The Acer Eee PC for example boasts that it can boot up and be online in seconds and the Dell Mini comes in a variety of colours for that personal touch.
Working in the laptop’s favour are screen sizes that are big enough for comfortable working and specifications that more than rival desktop PCs. They have the added bonus of being easily transportable outside the home, though you might not want to heft some of the larger models around. At home, they can be packed away neatly, which is ideal if you do not have space for a separate study. Smaller sized laptops are often called notebooks but the two terms are generally interchangeable. Prices generally start at around £300 with the latest, most powerful models costing over £1000.
INTERNET TABLETS Tablets are the buzzword of the moment, thanks to the announcement of the Apple iPad, which is due to hit the shelves later this year. Tablets dispense with a separate keyboard altogether. This is replaced by a touch screen keyboard. Ta b l e t s o f t e n s e r v e a s a n entertainment device, for viewing videos and music or surfing the web, with added PC functionality for email and documents. The iPad can also run thousands of applications from Apple’s App store on its 9.7inch screen whilst the Archos 5 Internet Tablet can stream TV on its five inch screen. Tablets cost from around £280.
Netbooks generally have smaller hard drives but the lack of space can be worked around easily by storing documents on flash drives or using a program such as Dropbox (www.dropbox.com). Here, documents can be stored on a remote server and securely accessed from any of your computers as long as you have an internet connection. Netbooks are generally cheaper than laptops and can be purchased from around £180 or you could get a netbook for free if you take out a mobile broadband contract (from around £25 a month). In summary, if you want something for day to day use in the home, then go for a laptop. If you are frequently away from home and need a computer for business then a netbook would be ideal. If you want something portable for entertainment then a tablet would be the best bet.

Improve To Move be to the taste of the new owners. For the same reason don't spend too much money on expensive fixtures and fittings so just keep it basic. Equally, a spotless new bathroom is something much sought after by prospective purchasers. Again don't spent outrageous amounts of money installing unusual shaped baths or whirlpools as they may not appeal to everyone.
If you intend to move house but are waiting for the property market to lift, you may be in a position to make improvements to your home now that will increase the value of your property when you are ready to sell. The biggest improvement you can make is to add an extension to create extra space. This will increase the value of your home although you need to be aware that you may not recoup your total investment. As this will be a big outlay it makes sense to research carefully before starting. You need to check with your local council's planning department to find out if you need planning permission and you'll also need an architect to plan your future extra room. Once all this is organised you then need to choose a good builder. If you don't have space around your house for an extension, why not convert your loft to provide an extra room or bathroom? Loft conversions also need planning permission and are subject to building regulations too. A more expensive yet interesting option if you have no loft space is to have a basement conversion. These are more costly because of the complications involved in digging down through the foundations of your house, but there are specialists around to help you evaluate this option. Investing in a new kitchen will greatly appeal to potential buyers, but avoid putting too much of your own personality into the design as it may not
Providing off-road parking is a much overlooked improvement and will cost relatively little to construct. Whether it’s a garage or simply a driveway youand any new owner with a carwill reap the benefits with lower insurance premiums and a guaranteed parking place. Repaint the outside of your house, replace guttering and repair roofs and chimneys if necessary. Change the windows if essential, making sure the appearance is in keeping with the house and neighbourhood. Inside your home, repaint everything in neutral colours not forgetting the woodwork. Keep any period features such as fireplaces and ceiling roses and don't use woodchip or rough plaster to cover uneven walls. Instead have the walls professionally re-plastered before painting or wallpapering properly. When hiring professionals for this work, always get at least three written quotes, not estimates, and insist that they include a full description of the work to be done along with the costs, payment arrangements and start and finish dates. Never pay the total amount upfront and avoid paying large deposits. Before making any final payment ensure you’re happy everything has been completed to your satisfaction. Whatever you decide to do to improve your home, whether you actually do move or not, you reap the benefits by enjoying your new improved living space. And if you do move in the future you should regain a good part of your investment.

Nearly half of all households in the UK own a pet of some kind. Britain is acknowledged as a nation of animal lovers and pets are often referred to as ‘one of the family’. Owning a pet is a huge responsibility though; you’re looking after a creature that depends entirely upon you for nourishment, shelter and entertainment. Most people are conscientious pet owners, but sadly, there are plenty of others that aren’t. Rescue centres are overrun with unwanted and uncared for former pets. Whether you are already a pet owner or are thinking of getting one, here are our top ten tips for responsible pet ownership. Think carefully before getting a pet and learn about its special requirements. All animals need your care and attention for their lifetime, which in some cases can be many years. Some needs are complex so a deep knowledge of these is beneficial to everyone. Factor in the costs of regular veterinary checkups, inoculations and other medicines, as well as unexpected incidental costs. Read plenty of literature on your chosen animal and follow the recommendations. Ensure your pet is sociable and well trained - an untrained dog is a dangerous animal and even smaller pets can deliver a nasty bite if not handled regularly and carefully. Provide a nutritious and well balanced diet to prevent illness and to keep your pet healthy and happy. Provide suitable housing and bedding. This will
Prevent unwanted litters and neuter your pet when appropriate. Not only does this prevent a population explosion, neutering can avert illness and avoid temperament issues. Groom your pet regularly. Long-haired animals require considerable care to prevent problems, sometimes necessitating costly veterinary treatment to resolve. Control your pet and ensure it is properly identified. Microchipping for dogs, cats and horses is vital. If your pet goes missing and is handed in to a rescue centre, the microchip can be scanned and you will be reunited with it quickly. Take out pet insurance for dogs, cats, rabbits and horses to cover against unexpected veterinary fees and third party liability. Owners are legally responsible for their pets, so if yours injures somebody or causes an accident, you’ll be grateful for taking the third party liability. National Pet Month is a registered charity which brings together various animal businesses and charities, schools and pet lovers, with the common goal of improving the welfare of pets. There are all types of fun-filled pet events that the public can get involved with, ranging from dog and cat shows, veterinary practice open days and sponsored dog fun runs. For further information on local fundraising events, visit the National Pet Month website www.nationalpetmonth.org

Home Workouts With busier schedules than ever before, more and more people are finding it increasingly difficult to find time to go to the gym for a formal workout. However, with the growing realization that tight schedules should not hinder anybody from taking care of one’s physical fitness people are getting increasingly innovative in finding ways to keep fit and home workouts are becoming increasingly popular. Many busy individuals opt to set up their own home gym at home or use DVDs instead of attending aerobics class.
to weather, as you don’t need to go out of the house. Aside from that, if the need arises, you can always change your workout time according to your preference as your home gym will just always be there for you. No gym hours to consider! The Challenges of Home Workouts Having home workouts is not always a piece of cake, though. It will require a tremendous amount of selfdiscipline and proper time management. Since you will be controlling your schedule and your workout intensity, you need to commit to a program.
The Advantages of Home Workouts There is great sense in preferring home workouts over going to the gym. Many people find working out at home very convenient and less restricting. Amidst a hectic schedule, you can simple play your DVD or pick your exercise ball or dumbbells to do your routines. A drive to the gym will not be necessary.
It may be helpful to ask your spouse or a close neighbor to join you with your workouts. This way, you can easily check each other’s motivation and commitment levels. This makes the activity more fun, too.
Home workouts are also cost efficient. It does not only save you time, but also money. You may need to purchase a few things at the start, such as workout DVDs, a dumbbell set, exercise bands or yoga mats. However, if you compare that to the annual fees you pay at the gym, you will find that setting your own gym at home will give more value for your money in the long run.
While you may need to allot space where you can perform your exercises, this will be very minimal. Most DVD workouts require you a few square meters of your home. You can actually do it within your living room. Also, many manufacturers of home gym equipment have already recognized this growing trend and compact yet still very effective devices have been made available in the market.
You will not also have to cancel a workout session due To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

RM Plumbing & Gas Services - Reliable and Local
Finding the right plumber or heating engineer is a daunting task, and on occasions has to be done under extreme time pressure, for example when the boiler is not working on a very cold day. Wondering if they will turn up at all? If they do turn up, how much are they going to charge you? and what will the quality of work be like? RM Plumbing & Gas Services have a long standing reputation for being honest, efficient, respectful and highly experienced at handling the most difficult jobs from both residential and commercial premises. Their local plumbers can carry out any job from the simplest leaking tap through to a full replacement heating system. The company was set up by director Ronnie McFarlane, who served his apprenticeship straight from school and went on to work as an engineer with Scottish Gas covering the East Dunbartonshire area. In 2001 Ronnie decided to go it alone and has built his company steadily through recommendation and reputation for quality workmanship. Due to the continued support from the local residents to use RM services, Ronnie has been able to employ two apprentices, 1st year apprentice Matthew Baillie & 4th year Kevin Gallagher who are both from the local area, during a time when many other large construction companies are unable or unwilling to start apprenticeships for young people. RM also have time served plumbers, gas engineers and an
electrician currently employed. In need of a new boiler? Ronnie and the team are boiler replacement specialists and supply high efficiency condensing boilers that are cheaper to run and more environmentally friendly than conventional boilers. They also have power flush machines that can make your old heating system like new by removing sludge from your system with no mess and no fuss to make your whole system run more smoothly. The company is also part of the new “Gas Safe Register scheme which starts on April 1st 2009, replacing the existing organisation operated by CORGI. By law, from April 2009 all gas installation companies and installers are required to join the new registration scheme and they will all be required to remain competent and registered, and will therefore will be inspected regularly. To tie in with this new register starting, Ronnie has opened a new showroom/advice centre in Auchinairn Rd, Bishopbriggs for the public, please call for more details. With RM Plumbing & Gas Services you can have peace of mind of having first class professionals working on your behalf. The company is fully compliant with all building regulations and all work is guaranteed for 2 years as standard. All appointments are taken with the customer in mind to minimise disruption. For reliability, integrity and honesty, you can trust RM Plumbing & Gas Services.

Popstar Parties - for the ultimate pop star experience Ever wondered what it’s like in a real studio? Want to know how the chart hits are made? Do you know an aspiring singer? At the recently opened Kobi Wood Studios in Kirkintiloch you can experience a real studio session with their popstar parties which are personally tailored to your individual taste and age group. They cater for everything from 1hr sessions to full album productions. After leaving school Kobi attended Stow College studying a HND Sound Production for 2 years and then studied a BSc Music Technology in Staffordshire University before going on to work in a number of different recording studios around Glasgow and one in Manchester. During her time in the Cutting Rooms Recording Studio, Manchester, Kobi gained a vast experience in recording and mixing vocals, she has also engineered, produced and mixed for various artists around the Manchester area, and now back here in Glasgow has recently opened her own recording studio. The most popular service at the studios are the popstar parties where you can invite between 4 and 14 people for a 2 hour recording party! This appeals to all ages and is the perfect excuse to be pampered like your favourite pop star for the day. The session will give you the chance to record three of your favourite songs and the producer for the day will mix the songs and put them on to a CD for each member of the party, with the main party member receiving a booklet from the day with pictures of the days event. The staff will help everyone make the most of their talents and show you the work that goes on behind the scenes in a recording studio. You can bring along your own refreshments to make it a real party and for over 18’s a bottle of champagne is also included. So if you fancy yourself as the next Lady Gaga, Paolo Nutini, Girls Aloud or (heaven forbid) Shirley Bassey then get along to the studio and book yourself or your nearest and dearest in for a pop extravaganza party to be remembered! The studio sessions also make the perfect gift with a difference.

Coping with stress
With so many of us facing financial insecurity and fears over our job prospects, it’s hardly surprising that greater numbers than ever are suffering from stress. Even teenagers find themselves stressed these days with the pressure to do well in exams. We cannot do much to change the economic climate or the need to succeed but there are steps we can take to ease the emotional fallout. First of all, what does stress look like? If you find any of the following are ongoing problems in your or your teenager’s life, then you or they might be suffering from stress: Irritability and seeming ‘down’ Nail biting or hair tugging/chewing Oversensitivity to criticism Sleep patterns disrupted Upset stomach or change in eating patterns Increase in alcohol use or smoking Difficulty in concentrating
Recognising the symptoms and accepting that you are in a stressed state is half the battle. The next step is learning to cope with the condition. It’s quite possible that you cannot do anything about the underlying causes, especially if it is finance and/or work related, but you can learn to ease the symptoms. Make simple changes to your life. Don’t try to do everything on this list all in one go, you’ll only add to your stress levels. Pick one thing you feel you can incorporate easily and do that. You’ll feel the benefits almost immediately. Accept help from others you don’t have to do everything yourself. Most of us try to do too much, feeling we have to constantly prove our worth.

Motoring Review: Focus RS Stop trying to multitask and concentrate on each job Get lots of fresh air, this will aid relaxation. in isolation until completed. By juggling too many tasks at once we can easily feel that we aren’t accomplishing anything. Pick the most important item that has to be finished and deal with that first. Making lists and ticking items off as you do them can add to a sense of achievement. It’s all too easy to get to the end of a day and only see the things that still have to be done, rather than congratulating yourself on what you have achieved. Take regular breaks at work. Even if all you do is walk around the office, or go downstairs and come back up again, moving away from your desk gives your mind chance to relax.
Have ten minute ‘you’ sessions. Set aside definite times when only you matter. This could be in the bath, or going for a walk alone, or anywhere where you can switch off the outside world and let your mind wander freely. Walk away from critical people. Don’t allow others to destroy your self-confidence. When under stress, it is all too easy to believe negative comments, even when they clearly bear little relation to reality. If life’s really getting you down and you’ve started to feel like you just can’t cope, don’t be afraid to see your doctor. They expect to deal with wellbeing issues as well as physical problems.
Find someone safe to talk to. We all need to put our fears into words occasionally. For teenagers it can really help by sharing their feelings on Facebook or other social sites. Let your anger out by hitting a cushion or by going somewhere alone and screaming.

Golf Tips:
By Daryn Cochrane - The Golfing House Bearsden Golf Range
Tip 1: Getting Out of the Bunker I cannot tell you how often I see amateurs take more than two shots to get out of a greenside bunker, and the biggest reason for this is decelerating on your downswing before impact. This could lead to one of two problems. 1. Pulling out of the shot and therefore making direct contact with the ball which will most likely then fly far over the green, or 2. Dropping your shoulders too much causing you to hit further behind the ball than needs be which will lead to the ball staying in the bunker. Next time you are practising your bunker shots or even playing on the course, remember to get your feet well grounded into the sand and accelerate through the shot. Your stable footing will help you make a more even swing without needing to drop your shoulders and the acceleration will ensure that you get some check on the ball once it hits the
green. In the next issue, I will be talking about controlling your distance out of bunkers. For any further help with your game, you can call me on (0141) 942 4048, email me at thegolfinghouse@btconnect.com or pop into my shop at Bearsden Golf Range. Have a fabulous golfing month! www.ents24.com Finding out about local music, theatre and entertainment events is a real challenge. Yes, you can do an internet lookup on each of the locations nearest to you, but it's a slog and if you are new to the area or visiting another town it's nigh on impossible.

Ents24 was original started in 1999 by three Bristol University students and their online offering was launched in 2005. A small group of people do the 'what's on' research and add 10,000 new listings every week. There's no charge for using the search facility and no additional charge if you go on to buy tickets for an event. By registering on the site you will be emailed a 'Tickets and Tours' bulletin every Thursday, and a further notification each Monday of events that are specifically local to you.
