New Music Review Christina Aquilera: Bionic Aguilera has been hard at work in the studio for the past year and is pleased to announce the release of her highly anticipated 4th studio album, Bionic. LOSTBOY! aka Jim Kerr Jim Kerr is the founder and the voice of Simple Minds, one of the most influential British bands coming out of the post punk musical revolution in 1978. The Lostboy project sees Jim Kerr dedicating his voice and his songwriting to a solo album outside of Simple Minds for the first time in over 30 years. Produced by Jez Coad (behind the desk on the latest two Simple Minds albums who is also playing guitars and keyboards). In Search Of The Real Cuba Cuba these days is a rather fashionable tourist destination. Tourists head out there, looking to enjoy the beaches, the wonderful weather, the diving and the salsa. And while all of these provide wonderful diversions for Cuba holiday makers, they are also often entirely artificial, created purely for the tourist market that invariably laps it up. For some, this is not enough, but with the tourist industry largely built on these foundations, where can you find the real Cuba on your holidays? The answer surprisingly lies in the nation’s capital, Havana. Though it is a popular tourist area, the real Cuba lies in its narrow side streets and dusky alleys. The city’s history dates back as far as 1515, and if you’re really serious about seeing the real country you will be prepared to forgo the 5 star resorts touted around the internet in favour of a private house or ‘particular’. This will give you a real sense of living on the island in a style more in line with the locals, and has the added bonus of costing no more than £15 per day for one in a prime city centre position – perfect for the

standard Cuba holiday sightseeing. If you have not been sent running for the Varadero beaches by the experience, it’s time to continue living the Cuban life with a lesson in gastronomy – a “paladar” will provide this. Some years ago, citizens of Havana won the right to open a restaurant (serving no more than 12 people at a time) in their homes, restricted to serving only chicken and beef dishes. Locating one of these will not only give you an insight into how Cuban people live in the capital, but will give you a taste of the real Cuban cuisine rather than the tourist equivalent. Being a guest in a Havana citizen’s café/home is one thing, but where is best to mix with real Cubans? The answer would be checking out some of the local bars. The most famous of these is of course Floridita bar, which was a home away from home for the great Earnest Hemmingway.

If you’re looking to fit in with the locals, and not stand out as a common Cuba holiday maker, a Dauquiri (rum, lemon juice, sugar and maraschino) or Mohito (rum, ice and mint) will help, as well as show you why Cuba is renowned for its fine rums.

If you are in search of exotic jungle and a I’ve only really scraped the surface here, and the real look at the natural beauty of the island, then the island Cuba will be unique for each visitor, but if you follow my of Cayo Levisa provides a calm, aesthetically pleasing suggestions and feel able to explore beyond the retreat. It’s a 20 minute boat ride from the mainland, but standard tourist world, you will discover a way of life a the island is home to tropical jungle, sandy beaches million miles away from anything in the UK, with enough and dazzling coral reefs with exotic marine life. While anecdotes to last until your next visit to this tropical it’s not free of Cuba holiday makers, this spot gives you paradise an insight into how the island was before it was populated.

FIFA World Cup 2010

After four years, the long awaited 2010 FIFA World Cup kicks off on 11th June in Johannesburg. This is the first time the World Cup has been organised in South Africa and is the first southern hemisphere country to host the tournament since Argentina in 1978. All eyes will be focused on the always-colourful opening ceremony, and the first game between host nation South Africa and a skillful Mexico side. The group and knock out matches will take place at the various locations in and around the country and the most important cities include, Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria, Bloemfontein and Cape Town. A total of 32 national teams have qualified for the FIFA tournament with a round-robin stage kicking off the competition. This consists of 8 groups with 4 teams in each group. The draw certainly threw up some wonderful and evocative pairings with the best 2 teams from each group moving on to the final knockout rounds, and the knockout round comprise of elimination games. This prestigious tournament will last for four weeks and there are a total of 64 exciting games that will feature in the event, culminating in the grand final to be held in the Soccer City Stadium, Johannesburg on 11th July 2010. So, who are the favorites to win the 19th FIFA World Cup? Lets take a look at some of the teams that should be in the running to lift the coveted trophy on 11th July.

Brazil The five time winners are joint favorites, with Spain, to win the 19th World Cup. Brazil are in great form, qualifying convincingly at the top of the South American group, and tasting victory in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. They are one of the strongest teams and will be confident of claiming their sixth World Cup championship. Spain The European Cup holders are joint favorites, with Brazil, and have recently been backed by the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest ever player, Pele, to claim their first championship. Following a flawless qualifying campaign, winning ten out of ten, Spain are the current number one team in the FIFA rankings, and will be the team to beat in South Africa. England England finished top of a difficult qualifying group containing Ukraine and Croatia. Although, currently only ninth in the FIFA rankings, England would appear to have the talent to repeat their one World Cup success of 1966 and much will be expected of Fabio Capello's side. The form of experienced starts like Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard could be crucial. If England are to win the group and progress in the competition they would face a team from Group D which includes Germany, Australia, Ghana and Serbia.

Porsche Cayman S Ruthless, efficient and menacing, there’s nothing quite like an ice white Porsche Cayman to focus the mind. This test takes place on a track near York and the midsized Porsche is seriously entertaining. There’s no drama, no rubber burning, back-end wagging show-boating with this tool, that’s for sure. One would imagine the word fun doesn’t even have a German translation. The Cayman a car which sits just below the 911 and above the Boxster in the firm’s range is about point-to-point; getting you from A-to-B as fast as possible. After a few laps it’s abundantly clear this is a very competent track machine. It puts several car lengths on the Nissan 370Z we were testing it against and that’s before we’d even covered half a lap. And boy does it grip, scything through bends with scalpel-edged precision. If you miss an apex there’s no one to blame here but the man behind the wheel. The Cayman is packed with performance goodies too ones that make fast a science, not an art form. First up is launch control: click the right buttons, hold your foot

on the brake, nail the throttle and wait for it to level at 5,000rpm, then simply take your foot off the pedal. It’s unbelievably effective, matching power with grip to thrust you forwards with the efficiency of a super computer. Of course this only works alongside the marque’s seven-speed PDK gearbox. Don’t ask what PDK stands for, it’s unpronounceable by humans, just be satisfied that all you need to know is it works, much like everything else in the Porsche, fantastically well. It’s a dual clutch set-up, not dissimilar to VW’s DSG unit, which prepares the next cog you want to use in anticipation of the next shift. Yes, that sounds hugely complicated, and I have no doubt it probably is, but it’s safe to say it makes gear changes very swift matters indeed. That’s not to say it isn’t without its faults. Most noticeable are the button toggles for up and down on the steering wheel which work the opposite way to that which you’d expect. They’re also far more awkward to get the hang of compared to paddles favoured by other manufacturers.

In most cases it’s far easier to use the gear lever that can be pushed up and down for shifts instead of the buttons. But despite this small handicap, the Cayman still manages to edge it out on track. The Cayman S produces 320bhp from its 3.4-litre unit, but it’s the way it manages to translate those numbers into forward inertia so effectively that seriously impresses. Problem is, you always get the feeling you’re only half of the picture. The Cayman’s so honed and sorted it takes away a large part of the enjoyment. After a day’s fun and frolics on track I’m left feeling a little cold and for a car from a maker like Porsche that’s not a good situation to be in, especially if you’ve just shelled out £44,000 for one.

You can pick up USB negative scanners to turn slides into shiny digital photos for around £50 (www.firebox.com), while dedicated scanners such as HP's ScanJet G2410 (£35.51 from Kikatek.com) cope happily with photos and documents alike. If video's more Dad's thing, the U Record Video Converter (£39.99 from Firebox.com) makes it easy to convert old tapes into digital files.

DATA STORAGE Before encouraging Dad to digitise everything, though, watch out: digital files can be massive, especially if they're video files. If Dad's computer is already short of

space, an external hard disk would be an excellent present. If you've got £67.99 to spare, you could get him a 1TB Seagate USB drive from www.play.com: that's 1 terabyte, or 1,000 gigabytes, of storage space.

TV’s New Dimension Will your next TV be 3D? It’s taken nearly a century, the first 3D film was shown in 1920 - but at long last 3D TV is heading for your front room. At least, it is if you believe Sky. The satellite broadcaster will launch the UK’s first dedicated 3D TV channel later this year, offering a mix of the arts, movies and sporting events. There’s no doubt that 3D is hot right now. Films such as Avatar, Up and Toy Story 3 make tremendous use of the technology, and by happy coincidence 3D films are much harder to pirate than traditional ones, which is great news for film studios. That means we’ll see stacks of 3D films in our local multiplexes this year. But will the same technology work in our homes? Sky certainly thinks so, but there are several problems to overcome. The big one is that 3D TVs still need special 3D glasses, and while they’re much more stylish than the red and green glasses you’ll remember from your youth you’ll still need to stick something on your head whenever you’re watching 3D content. That might be a problem for glasses wearers, but until lenticular 3D sets – which use twin lenses to provide 3D viewing without the specs – go on sale there isn’t an alternative option. Such sets are still several years away. The same applies to 3D gaming: while some current graphics cards can deliver 3D gaming for PC users, you’ll need 3D glasses as well as 3D-ready monitors.

3D CONTENT The second issue is content. As anyone who invested in the first HD TVs can attest, just because your TV can show something doesn’t mean anybody’s broadcasting it. We very much doubt you’ll ever see

EastEnders or Corrie in 3D, and at the time of writing there aren’t that many 3D films, let alone 3D TV programmes (once again the same applies to games: there are very, very few titles specifically designed to take advantage of 3D displays). They’ll come, of course, but early adopters will find themselves spending much more time with their TVs in 2D mode than in 3D. The exception – and it’s a big exception – is if you’re a football fan. Sky knows that football sells satellite subscriptions, and we’d expect it to invest heavily in 3D football matches from the very start of its 3D service.

PRICE The third issue is price. New technology is expensive, and while Sky+HD users won’t have to buy a new Sky box they will be expected to pay extra for the channel unless they subscribe to Sky World with Sky+HD at £58.50 per month. Sky hasn’t announced how much the 3D channel will cost otherwise, but we do know what you’ll have to pay to get a 3D TV set. The first wave o f S k y compatible 3D TVs will come m ai nl y from f o u r manufacturers: Sony, Samsung, LG and Panasonic. Prices will start at £2,000 to £2,500 for the TV, and depending on the model you’ll get one or two pairs of 3D glasses thrown in. Extra pairs will cost around £100 each.

So is Sky right? Is 3D the future? It’s hard to tell, because 3D is a hard sell. If you’ve already bought an HD TV and pay for an HD TV subscription, will you want to replace your TV already and sign up to yet another pay-TV channel? Will the kids keep crushing the 3D glasses at £100 a pop? Will you be willing to wear glasses over your glasses whenever you want to watch something? Will 3D ever be truly mainstream?
