Greetings to all our SBA Family and Friends, Well, it’s been another year of wonderful success for our students and school. We are so grateful to all of you for your continued support and unselfish generosity. Thanks to you, we are growing at SBA! Your generosity has given our students a chance to soar academically, creatively, athletically and, most importantly, spiritually. We have added the For One Program and are ever-vigilant in recognizing the best practices that a college-prep school should offer. Our vision is never-ending. Please read and see all last year’s wonderful results and the beginning of this year’s activities as we soar into the future at SBA. Please know, that all the names, organizations and businesses listed in the Honor Roll of Donors are forever in our prayers, as is our wonderful school that we call the SBA Nest! God’s blessings! From the Advancement Director
Greetings from the Advancement office! Looking back on the 2018-2019 year, we’re so grateful to all of our families and friends, who blessed us by sharing their time, treasure and talents. Thank you! Nationwide, giving was down 3.9% for religious organizations and 3.7% for educational organizations, but thanks to our benefactors listed in this report, gifts to The Blessing Fund were up nearly 50%. That’s an incredible testament to you, and to your confidence in our mission. Again, thank you! This year, we’ve again set lofty goals, and with your help again, we’ll meet them. Want to hear something exciting? We have an opportunity for tremendous financial growth, simply by increasing our parent participation rate in The Blessing Fund. As you can see in our Income and Expenses breakdown, we walk a very fine line. Increasing our parent participation rate will help us to continue to provide the very best educational and spiritual experience for our students. Last year our parent participation rate was just 40%. This year, our goal is to get that number to 65%. Can we do it? We can, and we will, with your help. Will you be cheerful and sacrificial and consider making a difference at St. Benedict, by making a gift today, using the attached envelope, or online at www.sbaeagles.org/donate? Thank you, God Bless and Go Eagles! Matt Stark Director of Advancement

About Our Faith FROM THE DEACON’S DESK Deacon Jeff Drzycimski God Is Calling! The purpose of a Catholic School is not merely to teach Catholics how to be Catholic. Sure, that does happen here, but that is only one aspect of what we do. An absolutely critical part of our mission at a Catholic school is to help children – ALL children, not just Catholic children – discover their vocation. A vocation is a call that comes from God, inviting us to know Him and to love Him and to serve Him by dedicating our lives, in a particular way, like being a priest, a deacon, a Religious sister or brother, to be married or even to be a single person. Every one of us, no matter who we are, has received, is receiving and will receive a call from God. He made us in His image and likeness, and He will never stop calling us to be who we were designed to be. Sometimes we hear God clearly, but sometimes we can’t hear Him because of the noise of the world that surrounds us. Our job at St. Benedict at Auburndale is to help our students “be still and know” that He is God. (Psalm 46:10) We want them to not only know
about God, but to actually know Him. We want them to know that they are loved, and that they are called. And we teach them how to listen for His call and to discern what it is they are being called to be and to do. This year, our annual diocesan Vocations Week was in early Fall and we dedicated the week to encouragement in discernment of the vocation call. We started every morning with prayers specific to many of the most common vocations – to the priesthood, the diaconate, the Religious Life and to marriage. Our Theology classes shared with students the study of vocations and the importance in praying for their increase in our Church and in our world. We also started a new tradition here at SBA. We initiated a traveling Vocations Chalice. During the week, an actual chalice is moved from classroom to classroom in the Theology Department so that it would be present to every student in the school at some point. The students learn that this chalice was blessed by a bishop, and consecrated for use by a priest in holy Mass. And, because it is made to contain the True Presence of our Lord Jesus Christ – Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity – this chalice becomes a tangible reminder to each of us of the importance of answering the vocational call, allowing our Lord to be present in each one of us, so that we might be in service to the kingdom of God here on earth. A short prayer service is led by the students themselves. In that service, they are asked, “Now, let us quiet ourselves, and seek to hear the voice of God calling to each of us. Right now, at this very moment, He is calling men to be priests or perhaps to be deacons. He is calling women and men to live the consecrated life, to be Religious sisters or brothers. He is also calling so many to live out their vocations to be faithful husbands and fathers or good and holy wives and mothers. He is calling each of us. Let us pause… and listen for His voice in our hearts.” While the Vocations Chalice served as a focal point for prayer during class, what it really did, was direct each student to ponder. To do a “deep dive” into their very soul and ask the question, “What is God calling me to be?” This, I think is the underlying and foundational purpose of our Catholic schools.

Headline News St. Benedict Launches Individualized Learning Program Four-to-One Student-Teacher Ratio Allows for Traditional High School Experience, Diploma St. Benedict, known for its educational endeavors for a diverse body of students with myriad learning styles, has expanded its offering with the new For One Program, a highly-tailored high school experience with a four-to-one student-teacher ratio for students with intensive learning challenges. The For One Program was created by school administration with a group of parents seeking a better alternative for their children’s specialized learning needs, will provide a four-year high school curriculum and social experience, as well as a diploma, along with training and self-advocacy tutoring for post-secondary plans. “These parents have a personal passion to provide opportunities of achievement for students and their families who traditionally have to seek home schooling or alternative programs,” said Dr. Elizabeth Fischer, Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs at SBA and who currently serves as Director of Four One. “Many other specialized programs do not provide the same high school atmosphere and overall experience that kids without challenges receive. With our school’s passion and vision for excellence in the traditional classroom, these students will thrive in the ‘four-one’ setting while having the traditional high school experience.”
“We are thrilled to launch the For One Program and offer a level of instruction and guidance so that unique students can receive an equally individualized curriculum while enjoying the social aspects of high school—all with a foundation rooted in the Roman Catholic faith,” Dr. Fischer said.

Faculty Focus Running the Good Race By Molly Pickering The Chicago Marathon October 13, 2019
Running a marathon is like childbirth. It’s painful while you are running, but afterwards you just forget all that and are proud of what you accomplished!!! AND you even start thinking about the “next one.” I signed up for the Chicago Marathon because my daughter,Chelsea lives there and I thought it would be a good way to see the city! I talked Terri Lamberth and Jackie Pennell into getting into the lottery with me. Jackie invited Candy Irwin to enter also. Terri, Candy and I all got in and Jackie raised money for St Jude to get in the race. Candy took over making our hotel arrangements and voila! We were ready to start training!!! Can I just say that training for a marathon during the summer isn’t fun! All those long runs in the heat and humidity – Ugh!!! Remind me to pick a spring marathon next time! But we did it – put in the time on our feet and survived. We were ready! The weekend was really fun, eating deep dish pizza, exploring downtown Chicago, going to the expo, spending too much money there (lol) and, the best part, being with Chelsea and getting to meet the new boyfriend!!! The start line is in Grant Park and they had three corral areas with four groups in each corral. We had to go through security at a designated gate just for our corral. Then we sat and waited for the race to start. The ‘fasties’ started at 7:15. We actually got to the start line at 8:50. The race itself was very flat and took us through all the different areas of Chicago: River North, Old Town, Lincoln Park, Wrigley Field, Little Italy, Chinatown and back onto Michigan Avenue. The weather cooperated, but we had a little wind every now and again. It blew my hat off on the last mile!
29
Faculty Focus I didn’t run as fast as I wanted to, but I loved seeing Terri’s face at the end, she was so happy! Being with someone for their first marathon is such a great experience. I’m so glad I got to do this with her. We are both ready to go for another one! I liked this marathon, but don’t think I want to do another really big one again. When you finish, it’s a long way to walk to get to the “after party.” I just wanted to sit down and not move! Haha! We never made it past our bag pick up, and just went back to the hotel and then on to find a great hamburger somewhere!!! I would recommend going to a destination marathon with friends. It’s so much fun! Start saving your money and pick out someplace you would really like to travel to and find a race! You won’t regret it!
Chelsea and her roommate Anna hopped around to different miles along the way to give us something to look forward to; our own little cheering squad. I kept thinking ‘only another mile and I’ll see Chelsea again’ – that really helped as the miles became more of a struggle. I had some stomach issues during this race for some reason, so I had to slow down and let Terri fly on ahead of me. I was so glad she felt great! The last two miles I began to recover and could pick up the pace some to finish strong.

Another one of Amber Frans’ work is gracing St. Jude Hospital. The SBA junior’s drawing is located under the bridge leading to one side of the hospital. Last year, Amber had a drawing among several located at the children’s hospital for catastrophic diseases. She was recently invited by the hospital to meet with the artist who designed the area. This very talented young lady is certainly making a name for herself in the art world.
Senior Dante Carrasco (center-1st row) spent a week in June at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis for their Summer Seminar. It’s a very competitive program with a few chosen! Dante is one of those few!
Last summer, senior Johnny Beattie completed a week at the West Point Summer Leaders Experience (SLE). SLE is highly competitive, with 6,000 applicants competing for just 1,000 slots annually to give high school juniors a one-week immersive experience as a cadet to inform their college selection decision. It’s a fast-paced program consisting of academic classes, military training, physical fitness training and intramural athletics. Johnny also represented SBA at Tennessee Boys’ State last May. He’s truly moving up the ladder!

Senior Emma Van Epps completed a two-week Volunteen Program at St. Jude Children’s Hospital for which she was selected. Check out these great pictures and the wonderful opportunities she had to be involved in the field of pediatric medicine. Emma is interested in a possible medicine/science/engineering/research type career so this program gave her the opportunity to explore it all. The program provided panels of professionals who spoke with the students each day and gave them insight on what it’s like to work in their fields. Emma was able to isolate cancer cells from a mouse’s liver in the Immunology Lab; ventilate a pair of pig lungs from the Respiratory Department; view a surgery; work directly with the patients and families through games, arts/ crafts, and hospital events; she was recertified in CPR and practiced resuscitation skills in the Simulation Center among so much more. The teens in the program came from many different schools in Tennessee and multiple other states, as well.
Some of the SBA staff and faculty celebrated the Feast of St. Benedict, July 11, at St. Francis Chapel with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass celebrated by Father Johnnie Smith, SBA Advisory Board Member. Thanks, Father Johnnie, for celebrating Mass on the Feast of our Patron Saint!
Proud of this flock of SBA Eagles who volunteered at the St. Francis Church Vacation Bible School this past summer! Eagles on a mission! #knowloveandserveGod

On And Off Campus The Secondary Instrument Music Camp for current and aspiring music teachers was held in June at SBA. Campers, led by Dr. Carol Chipman, learned new instruments in which they demonstrated in the concluding concert. Accompanying the campers in the performance were SBA’s own band members Keegan Dolan and Meghan Bayani on percussion. SBA Band instructor Naomi Ziegler was among the campers with her new instrument-the tuba. Including SBA, campers were band teachers from Briarcrest, Collierville and FACS High Schools; Appling, Arlington, Bon Lin, Elmore Park, Kate Bond and West Collierville Middle Schools, Riverdale Elementary and two University if Memphis students.
Hats off to senior Samantha Barton who had the winning design for the State of Tennessee Knights of Columbus pin. She was presented a $500 scholarship for her winning design and recognized at the K of C dinner this summer by Tennessee State Deputy Supreme Knight Michael McCusker, an SBA parent and member of the school advisory board. Leading up to Pentecost, several Memphis Catholic lay organizations sponsored a Novena (9 days) of praying, rejoicing and healing for the Memphis Diocese. The seventh day featured a talk in our chapel by our own Deacon Jeff Drzycimski - “Save the Family, Save the Church.” Outstanding!

On And Off Campus So proud of 2019 grad Lauren DeVine for receiving the St. Timothy Catholic Youth Award. The St. Timothy Youth Award is a national recognition award given to youth by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry. It is the highest award a Catholic young person can receive from the youth ministry community in the US. The award considers a youth who: • Lives as a disciple of Christ, setting a positive example for other youth • Witnesses to their faith by exhibiting Catholic morals and integrity • Demonstrates Gospel values through service to others • Exhibits Christian leadership in parish, school and/or other community settings During the presentation, following Mass, Youth and College Minister Sam Mauck noted that Lauren’s favorite bible verse is Matthew 5:16., “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.” Lauren has been a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church since her Baptism and Confirmation in April 2008. She also received her First Holy Communion at SFA, and has been an altar server and lector throughout the years, as well as serving Sunday Mass and May Processions. Lauren attended St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School from kindergarten through the 8th grade and graduated SBA this past spring. She served as a Senior Retreat Leader. Lauren has volunteered for the past five summers at Camp Fly High at the Madonna Learning Center, a local school serving special needs children. During her senior year she completed a semester-long internship with this facility. Lauren was a member of EDGE since the 7th grade, and continued with her high school youth group, Lifeteen, through her senior year. She participated in the outside activities for these programs as often as possible. Lauren has also volunteered the past two years at the Jingle Bell Ball. She has attended the Steubenville Youth Conference for five years and was selected to participate in LEAD this past summer. Lauren also loved her involvement with SEARCH and was immersed in several events throughout the past two years. She served as co-director earlier this past Spring. Lauren recently experienced her first mission trip with the Catholic HEART Workcamp in Charleston, SC. Lauren is attending the University of North Alabama’s Honors College this fall to study Occupational Therapy with the hope of continuing her work with special needs kids. Youth Director at SFA Julia Norton commented that Lauren is the first SFA youth group member who has received this award. Julia & Phillip Norton are her current youth leaders, and Julia nominated her. Lauren’s Godmother, Kaitlyn Stoddard-Carter, is an SBA alum and currently teaches and coaches at SBA. Lauren gives huge kudos to Father Mike Werkhoven and his work with SEARCH and other formal youth leaders. Great job, Lauren!
With Lauren are Julia Norton, Sam Mauck and SBA Principal Sondra Morris, who are all obviously proud of this very gifted and giving young woman.

Alumni Spotlight Joseph Hastings All of SBA is proud and happy for Joseph Hastings (SBA 2005) who was ordained as a Transitional Deacon on June 1, 2019 looking towards his ordination into the Priesthood in June, 2020. Following is a collage of pictures from the ordination last June of Deacon Joseph and Bishop Talley, which include laying of hands and the proud Hastings family which also includes sisters Mary (SBA 2003) and Kellie (SBA 2007). Following the ceremony, Bishop Talley, who is very adept at social media, posted the following on his FaceBook Page – “Joseph Paul Hastings. He has spent the last three years at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, where he has given himself to formation. He believes that the Lord God has called him to sacred ministry. The faculty members that oversaw his seminary formation believe this as well. On Saturday, on the Feast of the martyr Justin, this call to sacred ministry will be confirmed by the Church with his Ordination to the Diaconate. Joseph and our other seminarians have experienced all the things the Diocese has experienced. Many have had multiple Directors of Vocations . Many have seen three different Bishops preside in our Cathedral. Yet... with the uncertainties that West Tennessee has experienced, these men of God are with us still...seeking to serve alongside me...seeking to serve as instruments of the Lord Jesus. All of West Tennessee is enriched in the vocation of Joseph Paul Hastings, and each of his brothers in seminary formation. Let us pray for these young men, who long to serve this Church of Memphis. AMDG” Bishop David Talley

Alumni Spotlight Matthew Smith Matthew Smith (SBA 2015) is making a name for himself with his sports photography that began right here at SBA. Let Matthew tell it in his words – “By senior year at St. Benedict, I really got into yearbook class. I was starting to fully understand how my camera worked and I had formed a pretty good work ethic. My incredible teacher and mentor, Mrs. Ford, had prepared me for the work force. When I got to the University of Memphis, I talked to my advisor and told him what I had done with yearbook at SBA and wanted to continue with photography somehow. He then scheduled a meeting between the head of the Tiger Athletics Media Department and me. I shot one Memphis football game as a test run and they then brought me on as a student employee. Fast-forward to the summer of 2018. I had been with Tiger Athletics for three years. One day, I received a call from my co-worker saying that Penny Hardaway wanted shots of his team during practice so they could post on social media. When I get there, it’s just the team, me and my cameras. From that point on, the team sort of brought me in as a part of their staff. Seemed like every week I was over at the new basketball facility and I loved every second of it. All the players had gotten to know me and vice versa. During the year, the team would have recruits visiting the city, campus and basketball gym. At the end of the tour, the recruits would then get in full Memphis uniform and have a photoshoot. I was now one of the first people all these recruits were meeting. One of these recruits being the #1 recruit in the nation, James Wiseman. Summer of 2019, I heard around the office that Athlon Sports Magazine wanted to feature James Wiseman on the cover. That alone excited me. A few days later I got a call from Rodney Hamilton, the Director of Basketball Operations. He said he had called Athlon and told them that he wanted me to take the photos instead of Athlon sending their own photographer. I remember trying to play it cool, saying, ‘It’s just another shoot.’ But this is what I had been working towards since I started at U of M. I did the shoot the day before my birthday.”
We love hearing stories of Eagles living their dreams and soaring into the future. Hats off to all these Eagle alums for all their accomplishments! 58
