From the Principal To our families and friends, I can’t believe it’s time to say goodbye to the year 2015 and welcome in 2016. When you work in a high school with a lot of teenagers, it is never a dull moment. At this time of the year, many are focused on a strong academic finish for the semester and the different approaches they take to their finishes are always entertaining. As SBA faculty and staff, we are blessed with the opportunity to teach and also preach. Trying to model for our youth the real reason of the Christmas season is a bit challenging. We are blessed with a great group of students with whom we get to work. With those students comes, a great support system – their families. Wanting to help and serve others throughout the school year is not something that can be taught – our students want it and it’s because of how they’ve been raised and what’s been instilled in them prior to joining “The Nest.” Looking back at 2015, we get to celebrate with our students their many accomplishments and awards – academic, athletic, fine arts, performing arts, service! The list goes on! We thank you for the part you’ve played. We thank our alums and SBA family for the foundation that has been laid and for placing the bar very high! We ask that you continue to remember all of us at St. Benedict in your daily prayers as we will remember you in ours. We promise to keep up our great traditions! God Bless, Sondra Morris, Principal

From the Editor Eagle Nation! As you can see from the cover, SBA has been a very busy place in the last few months! In this issue of On Eagles’Wings, we highlight a lot, but some major institutions rise to the top – the installation of our turf field, the 1:1 advancement, the digital shift in our library and last, but certainly not least and possibly the most important, the inauguration into our Theology classes of the Didache Series and Socratic Seminar. These major advancements, fulfilling our mission and strategic plans, are highlighted throughout this magazine. I urge you to read the information on all these and how we want to continue to improve as we prepare these students for the present life and the next.We want them to leave “The Nest” with a true understanding of the human person based on true character and virtue. It is by the protection of the Holy Spirit and the proper formation of mind, conscience and body, especially during our youth, that we avoid the lies of Satan. This is what we try to offer our students at SBA in collaboration with their parents, the primary educators.

With the grace of the Holy Spirit and your generosity, we have made great strides.

God’s continued blessings always, Sharon Masterson, Director of Communications & Sports Information

Development We are grateful to the following parents who are giving their time, talent and treasure for the benefit of all our school family!

Dear SBA Family I can’t believe that 2015 is already coming to a close, but what an exciting year it’s truly been. I am so pleased to be Director of Fundraising and Alumni and look forward to helping St. Benedict continue to grow and prosper. It’s an amazing place and I look forward to seeing what’s in store each new day. Last year we implemented one-to-one interfacing and students were supplied with MacBook Airs. This year we’re hoping to enhance technology even more by outfitting each classroom with Apple TV’s. Apple says “Inspiration is Always at Hand!” With Apple and the faculty at St. Benedict, Inspiration is always at hand each day on our campus. Teachers are constantly striving to find innovative ways to enhance the learning experience for our students. Unfortunately, upgrades in technology come with a cost. To outfit each classroom we’re looking at roughly $1,700 a room. We feel that in the long run the reward and learning experience will be invaluable for our students and staff. The Apple TV AirPlay technology is the next step following the 1:1 program. AirPlay allows students and teachers to share work, projects and research instantaneously without having to connect to the Network, advancing real-time learning. Our Annual Fund is in full swing, and every little bit helps. No gift is too small! If you choose to generously sponsor a classroom simply restrict your donation to technology and a plaque will be placed under the TV in your honor.

About Our Faith full of many resources that encourage the students to delve deeper into their own particular questions. One of the most helpful parts of going to a cohesive series is that the text for each year reinforces the other years so that there is a steady growth in the student’s understanding. For our seniors, we have a Socratic Seminar format in the classroom focused on helping them formulate and articulate a deep understanding of their faith in Jesus Christ. This course focuses on small sections from primary texts (for example: Scripture, Church Documents, the Catechism, writings by Catholic theologians, etc.) for two reasons: first, to help our seniors both better prepare for college where they will encounter primary texts, and second, to help them take the next step in thinking through the rich faith tradition of the Catholic Church. While the facilitator of the discussion is crucial, the seminar format allows for a flipped classroom whereby the student plays a large role in discovering and communicating the meaning of the text for him/herself. We find this to be a crucial step for our seniors and desire to help them think deeply with the Catholic Church, articulate what they think and why they think it, and do both of these things in a respectful and loving way—in relationship with one another. The ultimate goal of all of our theology classes is twofold. On the one hand, we desire for the students to begin asking serious questions about the nature of life, such as “what is true,” “what is good,” “what gives life meaning” and “why do I exist?” These questions rest at the core of all humans and we understand that a rich life consists in not being afraid to ask and seek answers to these questions. On the other hand, we desire to help expose the students to the reasonableness of the Catholic Church—the interior logic of her teachings. But more importantly, perhaps, than this, we desire for the students themselves to think through and ask the questions so that instead of simply memorizing the teachings, they are able to pinpoint and articulate the logic themselves. To love the questions is a really special step in the journey of understanding. The theology of accompaniment Pope Francis is constantly promoting begins here—in the mess of each of our questions. We do not desire to answer away anything; we simply desire to break open the fullness of truth that allows them to, hopefully, encounter the Truth made flesh in the Person of Jesus Christ.

Loving the Questions

By Hannah Keegan Director of Spiritual Affairs “The aim of all Christian education, moreover, is to train the believer in an adult faith that can make him a “new creation,” capable of bearing witness in his surroundings to the Christian hope that inspires him.” Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI Happy New Year! Many wonderful things are happening at St. Benedict, from the implementation of the 1-to-1 program technologically, to the new turf field, to brilliant new additions in the form of faculty and staff, including our very own Chaplain, Fr. Herbert Ene! Here at St. Benedict we are constantly trying to better ourselves so that we can be of greater service to our students, and ultimately to the world. One of our proud new additions is the recent evolution of our theology curriculum. As our mission statement explains, St. Benedict “educates in the spirit of Christ in accordance with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church,” and as such, our Theology Curriculum has developed so that it is in closer conformity with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops High School Curriculum Guidelines. We have also adopted and modified an exciting senior theology course from prestigious Catholic schools across the country operated by the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia. For our freshmen through juniors we have the Didache series. Didache is a robust religion curriculum written by Catholic theologians focused on illuminating the inherent truth and reasonableness of our Catholic Faith while highlighting frequent references to Scripture and Catholic Doctrine. These books are challenging and

Our Lady of Fatima devotion

The National Pilgrim Lady of Fatima Statue was in visitation at SBA on September 17. SBA was a leg of the statue’s tour throughout the Memphis Diocese. The statue tour brings the graces of Fatima and Our Lady’s message of hope, peace & salvation to those many thousands of people who may never have an opportunity to make a pilgrimage to Fatima itself. Students and faculty were able to have their Rosaries and Scapulars touch Our Lady’s mantel and view, up close, her presence especially her beautiful eyes! It was powerful spiritual opportunity for the students as they heard the story of Our Lady of Fatima and the apparitions that took place in 1917.

night, was joined by those who call the field their home - St. Francis School football teams, the SBA cheerleaders along with the Eagle mascot, SBA dance team and SBA lacrosse teams. The new turf field sports the St. Benedict at Auburndale “Coat of Arms” in deep blue, red and gold at center field. School administrators chose this image for the center of the field as they felt this image with the Benedictine Cross best exemplifies the mission of the school in the spirit of the Benedictine charism, strong with virtue and love of Christ. As a Roman Catholic School of the Diocese of Memphis, the school has a mission to teach as Jesus did and provide young people with a virtue-based education for this life and to bring them to the next. Not to be left out, the “Mighty Eagle” mascot vestige appears on the back of the press box tower, visible to all as they come into the stadium.

Stadium Turf In cooperation with the Catholic Diocese of Memphis and A2H Architects, SBA resurfaced the football field during the summer months in anticipation of the 2015 football season. The blessing and opening of the field took place on Friday, September 4, the night of the first home game of the season. Vicar General of the Diocese of Memphis Monsignor Peter Buchignani officiated at the blessing of the field ceremonies and was assisted by Reverend Robert Marshall, Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Church. Both priests are members of the St. Benedict at Auburndale Advisory Board. Also, assisting were the school’s Chaplain Father Herbert Ene and Father Mauricio Abeldano, Associate Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi. It was a special night for the SBA Eagles’ family. Athletic Director Caleb Marcum remarked, “We are blessed and humbled by the generous donations and support that we have received from so many. Without their help, this dream would not be a reality. We want to say, ‘Thank you,’ for the countless hours of preparation, the vision of our donors and the great students who paved the way for us to be where we are today.” Hundreds of students, parents, alumni and friends filled the home-side stands as Monsignor began the blessing prayer, followed with readings by Father Marshall. Monsignor then blessed all areas of the field from corner to corner while representatives of the Diocese of Memphis, members of the SBA Advisory Board, Sisters of the St. Cecilia’s Dominican Community who teach at SBA, representatives of St. Francis School and major contributors looked on. 1:1 rolled out This year, SBA had a full (grades 9-12) rollout of our technology Apple 1:1 Program. Under the guidance of the IT and Admissions departments, every student, accompanied by a parent, came to campus before the start of school to get log-in instruction and use of their MacBook Air computers. New back packs with student ID tags were distributed along with the computers. It was a huge undertaking, but the project was completed and the results have gone beyond expectations. Edgar Reyes, SBA Director of IT and Silas Armstrong are managing the IT office and are available throughout the day for faculty and students for consultation on use or for any glitches that might arise. As one travels the campus hallways, students’ interaction with computers is apparent. Learning is expedited to real-time with students’ preparation for college being a priority. No longer is there a wait for laptop carts and E-Books are available in most courses allowing for more dynamic resources and learning functionality. Students love it, too, because there are less heavy texts to carry. 1:1 – just one more way SBA educates for the 21st century! Didache Series and Socratic Seminar advances school mission A Catholic School is a mission in itself. We work off a mission statement, but we are a mission, in that we are called to nourish souls. That is what a Catholic School should do and that is what SBA does, better than anyone around. All schools can claim high academics, arts, athletics, but not all schools can claim a mission to form souls for God in the Roman Catholic tradition. For the past few years, the SBA Theology Department has researched and planned the implementation of a robust curriculum to help fulfill the mission and strategic planning initiatives of the school. This year, in conjunction with the Spiritual Affairs and Academic Affairs Offices, the Theology Department introduced the Didache Series (freshmen-juniors) and the Sister Rita Marie, O.P. gives parents an overview of her Socratic Seminar classes Socratic Seminar for seniors. Please read the comprehensive during “Meet the Teacher” night in August. and insightful article by Spiritual Affairs Director Hannah Keegan in the “About Our Faith” section of this magazine titled “Loving the Questions.” It gives a thorough overview of this advancement in our Theology classes. SBA strives to educate the whole student, mind, body and soul. This includes balanced but rigorous courses in science, math and robotics; the classical with English, history and foreign language; offerings for the artistic, with outstanding results; and most importantly, training for the soul. This is one of the most exciting and important initiatives we have undertaken. SBA is on the cutting edge in academics, athletics, technology and faith formation. After all, preparation for life includes Heaven.

Headline News SBA Library Digital Shift By Lisa DuFur, Librarian Much more than a library, the SBA library/cybrary has made a digital shift. The library is a multipurpose informational facility that caters to student and teacher digital needs. It has risen to a new level with the implementation of the 1:1 laptop program. The SBA library reaches outside its walls to the cyber world of information. In an attempt to help students find the information they need quickly, the SBA Cybrary website (http://sbaeaglescybrary.org/) was created. The top menus of the site provide ways for students to easily search the library Catalog and see what material is available. Students can also check the multitude of online Databases to get information including templates for writing their Research paper. Database passwords are available in the library. On the left of the site, students will find E-Learn links. The Assistance/Information section leads them to the technology service desk link and a place to ask questions or make requests of the library staff. The Learning Links section houses Tutorials which introduce students to their MacBook Air and the Apple applications that come installed on their MacBook Air.The Internet Safety link leads you to OnGuardOnline. This resource provides information for both parents and students about maintaining a positive digital footprint, online safety and responsibility. The third choice is Cool Clicks. This section of the site provides students with a superabundance of curricular sources to assist them in understanding various concepts taught in their classes. Sometimes having similar concepts explained from a different viewpoint provides the jolt that turns on a light bulb. Subject Resources is an ever-changing resource for individual subject area curricular investigation The Step Sheets link holds directions and little tech tips that make using technology just a little bit easier. Tech Tools is a collection of tools and sites students and teachers might be interested in learning about. There are layers upon layers of information to be gleaned in this area. You can select an area of interest and keep going until you find what you need. Also on the left just a little further down the page is a section called Frequently Used. Below that a section called Enjoy and Learn. This section consists of sites students can log into individually. Discovery Education contains standard based video content to assist teachers and students in the teaching and learning process.Teachers can differentiate their instruction by using sections of these videos and resource materials. Students engage in higher

order thinking when challenged with various types of blended learning. Another way students can enjoy and learn is through Ancestry. What a treat to take a look back through the years of our ancestors. Follett Shelf is an additional eBook resource for academic use. Atomic Learning is a collection of tutorials to assist students and teachers with various application programs for both Mac and PC users. Finally, you will see the Community Resource section. We urge students to be aware of and use additional resources around them.We are proud to supply links to these resources. In addition to the SBA Cybrary website, the library has been arranged to accommodate multiple classes in a nondisruptive manner. The SBA library provides much needed areas, or “maker spaces for students to use their laptops when creating academic rich projects and presentations. Two study rooms now function as recording and small project based spaces. Here students become actively involved in their learning by creating digital projects with the use of the headset microphones provided by the library.Teachers use additional areas of the library for collaborative instruction and learning. Apple TV devices provide a great way to collaborate and share. These devices allow students to share what is on their screen with the class in one click. The four HD screens serve as the output for developing projects. An additional Apple TV attached to a projector makes for an even bigger impact when displayed in the rear classroom area.

Professional Development – an integral part of faculty life Throughout any given year, faculty and staff are given professional development opportunities which ultimately enhance the learning experiences of their students. Before the first semester was over, several speakers and activities were available. As our Mission says, SBA exists to bring the understanding of the human person, we were fortunate to have Sister Elizabeth Anne, O.P., of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia, present an inspiring and thorough discussion of the Nature and Mission of the Catholic School. In addition, Father Ben Bradshaw, Pastor of the Church of the Resurrection with a Licentiate degree in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in Washington, D.C., presented a discussion at SBA, open to all Catholic Schools’ faculty, on the Theology of the Body and sanctity of the Sacrament of Marriage. Teachers and staff also learned about the implementation of the 1:1 initiative from an Apple representative and had a pleasant visit from Amy Howell, SBA parent and author of Students in High Gear. Of course, the annual CPR lesson was on tap before school started, but the class was administered, this year, by new school nurse Lindsay Wilemon.

Sports St. Benedict at Auburndale Athletic Department From the AD’s Desk Caleb Marcum Have you ever wondered why being a fan was so fun, but yet so hard - an almost unseemingly love/hate relationship that one day has you screaming in joy and the next yelling in anger? Each one of us has an innate competitive nature. For some it is in everything they do like ping pong, monopoly, football or Black Friday! As a coach it is very special to share experiences with SBA athletes who reach the joys of winning or the depths of losing. Their effort is outstanding, their will to win is unwavering, and their perseverance to become the best never falters. These are some of the best memories that we will never forget, nor will we ever take for granted. Hard work, perseverance, commitment to winning and SBA pride has made us what we are today, and we must continue to create winners on and off the field. At SBA we want to become an athletic department determined and committed to preparing our student-athletes not only for our athletic teams, but also for their future colleges and careers. We want to be Champions! It is a commitment that we do not take lightly. Over the next 5-10 years, we have decided to upgrade our athletic facilities. SBA has started this project with a state-of-the-art turf football surface. However, this is just the beginning. In the upcoming months, SBA will be starting a campaign to raise funds for the next phase of our athletic facilities upgrade. These facilities will enhance all our outdoor sports allowing the teams a place to train and compete for state championships. We are committed to producing Champions and we need your help! For more information on how to get involved please contact Kathleen Muck, Director of Fundraising, at muckk@sbaeagles.org.

Alumni Spotlight

Jake Smith (2007) By Savannah Boettcher, Senior (Appeared in the September 25, 2015 issue of “The Eagle’s Eye” school newspaper) Many people merely dream of a shot on their favorite game show. Imagine if one day that dream became a reality. This was the case for St. Benedict alum and recent Jeopardy! contestant, Jake Smith. Jake graduated in 2007 and involved himself with all aspects of the St. Benedict life. He took advanced classes with Mrs. Dabaldo, Mrs. Rush, Mr. Madeksho, and Mrs. Schneider. He was also captain of the Knowledge Bowl team and even led the team to the TV tournament finals against White Station two years in a row. Jake found his true niche at SBA in the theater department with Mrs. Wells, where he was a member of Show Choir and took part in various productions. “The theater was really where I spent a lot of my time,” said Jake. He also enjoyed writing and was a member of The Eagle’s Eye staff as a senior. He continued his academic career at Rhodes College where earned an Art History degree and graduated cum laude. “Trust me, I’ve heard all the jokes,” said Jake, “but I’ve always been interested in art history. Actually, it started

at SBA in Knowledge Bowl. We were always so terrible at art history. The thing that started attracting me towards art history was the fact that it requires so much knowledge about life.” Throughout his middle and high school years, Jake always excelled when it came to trivia and general knowledge, so becoming a contestant on Jeopardy! was always a dream of his. “I really loved watching Jeopardy! and always thought, ‘One day, that’s going to be me,’” said Jake. “And sure enough, it happened.” Although he missed the Final Jeopardy! question, Jake controlled the game throughout the show, and even received a compliment from Alex Trebek. “Alex said I played brilliantly, despite losing,” said Jake. “He also told me I played such a great game. I think he knew it was a heartbreaker. I had a really hard time after I lost that game. It was my childhood dream and I had it in my hands and it slipped away from me. But now, I view it as a totally positive experience. I feel like it happened for a reason.”

The author and Smith Jake’s roots run deep through Memphis and his passion for knowledge and trivia really emerged while at SBA. “St. Benedict really prepared me for the future by helping me understand what I really value in life. I value the company of my friends, the ability to speak and think clearly, to have conviction in my beliefs,” said Jake.
