CREDITS REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION: minimum 26 credits Theology - 4 credits English - 4 credits Mathematics - 4 credits Science - 3 credits History – 2 credits Foreign Language - 2 credits (in the same foreign language) Economics – .5 credit Government – .5 credit Personal Finance - .5 credit Wellness - 1.5 credits Fine Art - 1 credit Electives - 3 credits Note: Recent state changes require the following change to the curriculum beginning with the Class of 2013: Students must have an additional ½ credit in Physical Education and have ½ credit in Personal Finance in order to graduate from St. Benedict. These 2 classes will be taken either junior or senior year.

THE ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS ENGLISH (1 Credit Required Freshman Year) Mrs. Janice Linder, Department Chair English I Honors* English I Traditional English I PLUS English Electives for 9th grade: Speech, Etymology, Directed Studies, Directed Studies PLUS *No honors test is given for Freshman English. Placement in Honors Freshman English is determined solely by the verbal, reading and language scores on the High School Placement Test and by academic grades.
MATHEMATICS (1 credit required Freshman year) Mrs. Annette Dabaldo, Department Chair Algebra I Honors Algebra I Traditional Algebra I PLUS and Math Lab* Math Lab* Geometry Honors Geometry Traditional *Math Lab-Course Description: Strongly recommended for freshman students who need to strengthen their basic mathematical skills. Areas of concentration will be measurement, percents, decimals, fractions, and word problems. This, in addition to the student’s Algebra 1 course, will provide a good solid foundation for the more challenging classes to come. Placement will be based on a review of the prior year’s grades, current test scores and teacher/counselor recommendation. Honors Testing for math is offered to students currently taking Pre-Algebra, Math 8 or Algebra 1. Honors Test Date: Saturday, April 30th, 9:15 am. Honors testing registration forms were included in student registration packet.

Physical Science Honors Physical Science Traditional Physical Science PLUS Biology Honors Biology Traditional Honors Testing for science is offered only to students currently taking a full year of Physical Science using a Physical Science textbook. Honors Test Date: Saturday, April 30th, 8:00 am. Honors testing registration forms were included in student registration packet. Freshman Theology This year covers three areas: A study of basic Catholic beliefs, liturgy/Eucharist and a study of Hebrew Scriptures. The Hebrew Scriptures is a survey course of the writings of the Old Testament. Through this study, students will come to appreciate major themes of the OT, apply its religious truths into their lives, and see how the OT is the foundation for the Christian tradition. Liturgy: Individual class Masses are celebrated in our Chapel. Periodically, All School Masses are held for the entire student body. Retreats: Class day retreats are led by current Senior Retreat Leaders and Theology faculty. Community Service: Students at every grade level take part in a variety of service projects including the Mid-South Food Bank’s canned good collection, clothing drives, and assisting at homes for the elderly and more. WELLNESS (1 credit required Freshman year) Mr. Jack Schenkel, Department Chair Health and Physical Education Physical activity is critical to the development and maintenance of good health. The goal of WELLNESS is to develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity. The goal of Health is to improve the student's knowledge of relevant health information such as nutrition, alcohol, tobacco and drugs, personal fitness, and goal setting. The goal of PE is to work on improving the student's fitness through many sports, games and activities such as team volleyball, soccer, basketball; individual tennis, golf, badminton; conditioning with weight training and aerobics; all including many games and challenges.

CLASS SELECTION PROCESS Now: Register for Honors Testing for math and science (Test date: Saturday, April 30; Science testing begins at 8:00 am; Math testing begins at 9:15 am). May 11: Schedule Selection Form and honors test results will be mailed. May 18: Due date to return completed Schedule Selection Forms (forms not returned by due date may not be given elective choice) July 7: MBS Online Bookstore opens
On the next page is a SAMPLE of a Schedule Selection Form. This form will be mailed to all Freshmen on May 11! Recommended core courses will be marked on the form. Forms must be completed, signed and returned by May 18!

COLLEGE COUNSELING Mrs. Mary Cox, 12th Grade Guidance Counselor You're just beginning your high school career, but it's never too soon to think about college! Here are a few things that are important to consider over the next four years to make the most of your high school career.... Every year counts: 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th! The quality of your transcript including the types of courses taken, the level of courses and grades achieved over the next four years! Make the most of your academic skills and interests! The quality, not quantity, of school and community involvement matters! Be sure to participate in activites that interest you and look for leadership roles! All SBA Guidance Counselors offer academic advice to assist you with appropriate course selections each year. Counselors coordinate yearly testing including PLAN (pre-ACT), PSAT (Preliminary SAT), ACT and SAT programs. SBA offers college counseling relating to the college/university search and selection process. Students and parents are made aware of financial aid and scholarship resources. Your four high school years will be behind you before you know it!

SBA School Uniform School uniforms are required and available for purchase at Parker School Uniforms, 1658 Appling Road, Cordova, TN or online at parkersu.com. SBA will have a Used Uniform Sale June 14, 7:30-10:00 am. The sale will be held in the foyer inside the main rotunda entrance.
Live On-Line Chat Details We will be hosting a live on-line chat for all new parents on Wednesday, April 6th, from 6:30pm-7:30pm. On April 6th at 6:30pm you can access www.sbaeagles.org/livechat to join the chat. On that site, you can submit any questions you have from the Academic Orientation or SBA in general. Every question submitted will receive an email response from one of our Faculty members here at SBA. Here’s where the “Live Chat” part comes into play… As we are receiving and answering questions, we will post the most frequent or pertinent questions (along with their answers) on that same “Live Chat” page. So, even if you don’t have any questions you would like to ask, check out the page during the Chat to see what other families are asking.
