Welcome to Catholic Schools Week! Beginning in 1974, it became an annual and nationwide celebration of our Catholic Schools around the country. This years’ theme is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service.” We could sit around a table for a long time but likely wouldn’t come up with a slogan that is any more straightforward – or accurate. It gets right to the heart of who and what we are. No one seems to be exactly sure when or where Catholic schools began in this country but we know for sure there was one in existence as early as 1606 (in what is now St. Augustine, FL.) You can let your mind wander back through all your history classes but you can’t think of many American things that have that sort of history. Certainly not our Constitution. Nor our first California mission. Not even the settlement at Jamestown. There were some brutal times back then. As history has taught, the Catholic faith – and anything associated with it – wasn’t exactly met with the open arms of religious freedom. But then a lot of ideas - and people - weren’t. Still, we not only survived, we thrived. To the point where in the 1960s, at its height, there were some 5.2 million students spread among 13,000 Catholic schools. Even in today’s dollars,
most were incredibly inexpensive having been staffed by priests, sisters and other religious … a walking, talking living endowment. But times have become far more challenging of late. Just twenty years ago, the numbers had crashed to far fewer religious, far greater costs and but 2.5 million students in 8,700 schools. The next ten years saw another 573 schools go away, and finally, between 2000-2010, Catholic schools dwindled yet again at an average of 117 schools per year. Today’s official tally includes less than 7,000 schools serving a breath over two million children. And yet, 25% of those - and that includes us – have a waiting list of people who would do most anything to get their child in our doors. There are reasons why the numbers reached such an impressive peak and an equal number of explanations why they’ve dropped. But one thing that has never changed are the benefits that our graduates carry into the world – both educational, social and spiritual. Or to re-phrase: Faith. Academics. Service. Nancy and I read the news, we cheer the successes of all schools and lament their struggles as well. But not a day passes that we don’t give thanks for both our moms and dads who found a way to make Catholic schools happen for us. Still, there is much to improve. To that end, we thank all of you for your support and your patience. But mostly, for finding a way to make it possible for your child to attend. Thank you for all you do. George Valadie, SBA

Saint Francis Hospital Auditorium 5959 Park Avenue The Mother/Daughter Programs explore God’s special gift of human fertility and the beauty and wonder of God’s plan for growing up and becoming a woman. Topics include: the changes in a young woman’s body as it prepares for motherhood; the onset of ovulation and subsequent menstrual periods; the functions of the female reproductive system; the sacredness of human life; the virtue of chastity; and a question and answer segment. It is good to come to both programs at the age appropriate time for each girl since the older girls’ program is an extension of the first one. The programs are presented by Natural Family Planning Teachers who will emphasize respect, understanding and appreciation for God’s gifts. T-shirts and boxer shorts promoting chastity and pro-life materials will be offered for sale at each program. *Girls younger than 10 who are already developing and showing signs of puberty are also welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served. Seating is limited and pre-registration is required.
