Dear Parents, There is a saying that just when you think everything is over, that will be the beginning. That is where we are now. For you, and your children, another school year is over, and summer vacation is beginning. It is hard to believe that another school year is ending. It seems like just a week or two ago that your children came to us with sharpened pencils and eager faces ready to begin a new school year, anxious for a new start. They grew, they learned, they poked one more hole in the cocoon in their effort to fly free. They took one step closer to becoming the person God intends them to be. You took one step closer to letting them go. I, too, am experiencing an ending, and a beginning. I am ending my tenure as Superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Memphis, and beginning a new adventure by taking another step on the path of becoming the person that God intends me to be. After 35 years in Catholic education as a teacher, principal, and superintendent, I am now answering God’s call of what more I can do to continue along the journey. Although I could not visit each of you and let you know in person about my retirement, you were in my thoughts, and in my very grateful heart! Although I am retiring from this position, I am not retiring from my mission, or my passion for Catholic education. Through the grace of God, the support of Bishop Steib, the generosity of our benefactors, the great leadership at our schools, our outstanding teachers, and you, our supportive parents, we have been able to accomplish much. I am always telling our students to have a vision of what they will do next and prepare for it. It is time for me, once again, to practice what I preach. I am hard-wired for challenge and creative problem-solving, and as much as I love our school community, I am energized by new visions, and by continuing my journey in the service of lifting an empowering others. I will be planting the seeds of hope and new visions for other dioceses and schools in the country as a consultant and speaker. But for now, I am cherishing my time with you, and will continue to live, and be active in, our Diocese. I am grateful to you for your support and commitment. It is you, our parents, your children’s first teachers, who first opened their eyes to the world around them, who opened their ears to truth, their mind to knowledge and imagination, their hearts to compassion and love and their soul to God. I am grateful that you have chosen a Catholic school to assist you in continuing the education of your child. I wish you a restful summer, but realize that it may not always be possible, now that school is out. Instead, my prayer for you is: May God give you the strength you need to endure the boundless energy of children on summer vacation. May God give you the wisdom of simplicity when you plan activities for your family and your summer vacation. May God give you peaceful times of solitude to pray, to dream or just to rest your eyes. May God give you the joy of experiencing just being a family. You have my prayers and best wishes for a wonderful summer. With gratitude and prayers,
Dr. Mary C. McDonald, Superintendent of Schools
