The SBA Way Newsletter #1
! Its great to be an SBA Eagle! As our fall sports kick off, I wanted to send a newsletter giving you updates on our current team’s success, sports schedules for the week, coaching tips, and any information regarding athletics. I am amazed every day by the amount of time and work our coaches put into our teams. I was thinking the other day about how important coaches are and how they impact lives. Your hard work never goes unseen. These athletes are being impacted and learn valuable lessons on and off the field from each one of you. The following quote is very appropriate when it comes to our coaching staff: “True leaders don’t create followers, they create more leaders.” Thank you for being that example! !
! Sincerely, ! ! Caleb Marcum, Director of Athletics! ! !

The Training Room will be completely set up by the end of next week. We have renovated our training room with new equipment. This includes stem, ultrasound, heating pads, GameReady system, taping tables, etc. We are extremely excited to start assigning rehab sessions throughout the day for our athletes, as well as after school. ! TSSAA has been in meetings to inquire about a full public/private split. This would not allow any private school to participate in the public school division. This decision is expected to be made in roughly two more years. Once we know more details, we will let you know. ! If you haven't had a chance to join our Eagle Lane tailgating area, please do so. Thanks to the boys basketball, baseball, trap, and girls basketball teams for all coming out Friday night. It is an awesome event before the football game to meet and greet parents and hang out with your players. Let me know if you would like to participate we can make sure the guy in charge reserves you a spot!! The ice machine is currently being relocated to a maintenance closet. This will allow all coaches to have full access to ice, tape, bags, etc. It is supposed to be completed by the beginning of next week. Electricity and installation occurred today. ! For those of you who were not able to make the coaches inservice at the beginning of the year, we will be having a meeting very soon to cover more details.!
The SBA WAY ! Â
When working with student-athletes, a successful coach will work towards building our culture as a program and as a team. The SBA Way is not about what we do, but how we do what we do. As coaches, we want to create a championship environment, and teach our players to lead an entire team. Each player will understand the SBA Way and our athletic culture. Our culture is explained by the acronym SCHAPE:!
!
S - Spirited, enthusiastic, excitement - Our environment will be one that is loud, excited, spirited about what we are doing. Our culture will be full of energy and our coaches will demand it. The difference about championship practices is they are full of sound, they are intense, and everyone is involved.! C - Communication enhances every human experience - Our student-athletes will be leaders not only by example but also in their communication with the coach, teammates and parents. Coaches will teach each student-athlete how to communicate by calling names, delivering valid information, having a positive tone and making eye contact. If our communication follows this format, all communication is done directly, face to face, and not behind each other’s back.! H - Hard work - Working hard is very contagious and we will have a relentless persistence to achieve any goal. We will be the hardest working coaching staff and teams in our league.! A - Approach - Our approach to everything is the attitude we choose to bring to something; the path we take to arrive at our destination. Our approach will be made up of three rules: showing up early, learning something and adding value to our culture. Our teams will be mentally tough which will direct our focus to every situation.! P - Precision - Our student-athletes will have a ridiculous attention to detail. They will be taught to have the discipline to do something as well as it can be done, every single time, even if its uncomfortable or inconvenient (even if the coach isn't looking).! E - Enhance - We will contribute to an environment or unselfishly offer a service. SBA student-athletes will also be asked to leave their environment better than they found it by being contributors rather than contaminators. ! !
COACHING TID-BITS
11 WAYS TO BUILD TRUST In my book Soup I discussed how trust is one of the essential ingredients to build a great relationship, winning team and culture of greatness. Without trust you can’t have engaged relationships and without engaged relationships you won’t be a successful leader, manager, sales person, team member, principal, teacher, nurse, coach, etc. In this spirit I wanted to share some thoughts about how we can build the trust that is essential for great relationships. Many of the suggestions you are already know. Many ideas I share are common sense. However, I’ve found that so often amidst the chaos of life and work we forget the simple and powerful truths that matter most. So here are 11 thoughts about trust. Feel free to share these simple reminders with your leaders, colleagues and team. 1. Say what you are going to do and then do what you say! 2. Communicate, communicate, communicate. Frequent, honest communication builds trust. Poor communication is one of the key reasons marriages and work relationships fall apart. 3. Trust is built one day, one interaction at a time, and yet it can be lost in a moment because of one poor decision. Make the right decision. 4. Value long term relationships more than short term success. 5. Sell without selling out. Focus more on your core principles and customer loyalty than short term commissions and profits. 6. Trust generates commitment; commitment fosters teamwork; and teamwork delivers results. When people trust their team members they not only work harder, but they work harder for the good of the team. 7. Be honest! My mother always told me to tell the truth. She would say, “If you lie to me then we can’t be a strong family. So don’t ever lie to me even if the news isn’t good.” 8. Become a coach. Coach your customers. Coach your team at work. Guide people, help them be better and you will earn their trust. 9. Show people you care about them. When people know you care about their interests as much as your own they will trust you. If they know you are out for yourself, their internal alarm sounds and they will say to themselves “watch out for that person.” 10. Always do the right thing. We trust those who live, walk and work with integrity. 11. When you don’t do the right thing, admit it. Be transparent, authentic and willing to share your mistakes and faults. When you are vulnerable and have nothing to hide you radiate trust.
