A Letter from the Principal To all our many families, friends and alums –
Greetings from St. Benedict at Auburndale!
Summing up a year like our school has had is no simple task but it was indeed remarkable and worthy of us to bring as much as possible together in this 2014-15 Annual Report. You will see throughout all the many accomplishments we had over the last few months in so many areas and how gifted our students, particularly the 2015 graduating class were. But please make no mistake, none of it – none of it - would have been possible without the support of so many friends just like you. Some of you have been able to donate dollars but there have also been the gifts of your hours and supportive words and lots of prayers. We’ve said this before, but I believe it bears repeating. Over the years, we have all worked to help SBA grow bigger and better in any and every way. True, we still have any number of opportunities to improve. They don’t always involve the infusion of additional financial resources, but as you know, there are some that will not happen any other way. For those, dreaming won’t be enough. And it’s for those that we ask you to consider the possibility of making a gift to this year’s (2015-16) Annual Fund Drive (see attached envelope). Some of you already have! Our focus, this year, is to use your generous donations for the enhancement of our classroom technology. We hope to add flat screen Apple monitors in each classroom, a step-up from smart boards and projectors. This technology provides a more modern and economical full-view with sound for students and teachers. You have our pledge that no matter what, we will never stand still. But if you can help us go further and faster, know that we will be forever grateful. Thank you for all you do in so many ways and may God shed His graces on you. Sincerely in Christ, Sondra Morris Principal 2

Headline News SBA welcomes Chaplain Reverend Father Herbert Ene joined SBA as a full-time chaplain. He joins Spiritual Affairs Director Hannah Keegan in the school’s Spiritual Affairs Office. Father Ene is a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Nigeria. He was ordained in August, 1997 having completed his Bachelor of Philosophy and Bachelor of Theology degrees in 1992 and 1997 respectively. He also received his Post Graduate Diploma in Education at the Imo State University Owerri, Nigeria. Father Herbert served his home Diocese in various capacities. He served as Assistant Director of Catholic Institute for Development-Justice and Peace (CIDJAP), as Pastor of Saint Anthony Catholic Church at Ogui New Layout Enugu and as Chaplain/Pastor of Saint Mulumba Catholic Chaplaincy at the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC). Since his arrival at the Catholic Diocese of Memphis in West Tennessee in 2004, he has served as Associate Pastor of Holy Cross Church in Paris, TN, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Memphis and Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Memphis. Father Herbert believes in the saying that “knowledge is power.” Consequently, his quest for knowledge led him to Christian Brothers University in Memphis where he obtained his Master of Education degree and then to the University of Memphis where he received his Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership. Prior to his appointment at St. Benedict, he served in the Diocesan Archives Office.
St. Benedict is extremely excited about having a full-time chaplain. Principal Sondra Morris said, “We are gratified to have Father Ene join our staff and to have a full-time chaplain at our school. He will be administering the sacraments for our students and staff and his presence solidifies our mission of educating students for this life and beyond. He joins the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia, who joined the staff last school year. To have three religious, two consecrated sisters and a diocesan priest on our staff, is extraordinary. We are grateful to Bishop Steib for his support of SBA and for providing this experience for our students. Catholic education is a Diocesan priority and SBA continues to fulfill that mission at the high school level.” Father is an aficionado of soccer, music and tourism. He is well known for his friendly greeting: “God is good! All the time!”

Achievements Scholarships presented members of the Class of 2016 Remmert Memorial Scholarship
At the Remmert Scholarship presentation were (from left) SBA Principal Sondra Morris, Superintendent of Catholic Schools Janet Donato, Ricky’s mom Maureen, Ricky and members of the Remmert family; daughter Loretta Remmert Jackson and sons Russ and Steve. Rising junior Ricky Carrasco was pleasantly surprised when he was presented with the Remmert Memorial Scholarship. The Remmert Family began the presentation of the scholarship last year to commemorate the lives of Herman Albert and Berenice Agnes Remmert for their longstanding commitment to Catholic education. Mr. and Mrs. Remmert’s connection to Catholic education in the Diocese dates to their arrival in Memphis in the 1950s. Over the next 25 years, they supported seven children through their completion of higher Catholic education. To honor their wishes of establishing a long-
term legacy to Catholic education their family created this memorial endowment. It is a reflection of their earlier commitment to Catholic education and helping students succeed in Diocese of Memphis Catholic Schools. Students with a 3.0 GPA or above competed for a scholarship by submitting applications, reference letters and essays to the Superintendent of Catholic Schools. From these, prospective recipients were asked to highlight early career interests in a number of key areas. Other relevant factors, such as faith and service, were also considered in determination of award recipients.
The Bobby Russell Memorial Scholarship Rising senior Santia McCraw was presented the Bobby Russell by Mrs. Morris at Honors Day in May. Santia follows in a long line of SBA students receiving this scholarship. The award was established by Mr. Russell’s family and friends following his untimely death and is given annually to an SBA student based on an essay submitted on “What a Catholic Education Means to Me, Now and in the Future.” Mr. Russell was struck and killed by a driver under the influence. The accident occurred while Mr. Russell was working in the front yard of his home in 1995. His two sons, Trey (2000), Wes (’98) are graduates of SBA. His wife, Dell, is a long-time spokesperson for MADD (Mothers against Drunk Driving). A fund was established to afford a worthy SBA student tuition assistance based on the essay. Santia’s essay, one of many, was anonymously selected by the scholarship fund committee.

The Nabil “Bill” Saba Scholarship Senior Allison Weske recently received the annual Nabil “Bill” Scholarship. She received the scholarship based on her essay, “How my St. Benedict education provides future benefits.” In her essay, Allison says, “….Academics at St. Benedict are top notch. In my three years here, I have had the opportunity to study under some of the most rigorous and loving teachers... The teachers challenge me to develop my study skills, learn how to learn on my own and how to work with others to solve complex problems. In addition to academics, St. Benedict encourages students to pursue their faith. Finally, St. Benedict prepares me through focus on service.” The Saba Scholarship was established in 2010 in memory of Nabil “Bill” Saba by his family following his untimely death in 2006 at the young age of 37. Each year the family honors a worthy SBA senior with the Saba scholarship to use toward tuition at the school. Saba’s niece, SBA senior Pamela Saba, represented the Pictured - Principal Sondra Morris, Allison’s mom Jennifer, Allison, Pamela Saba and Director of Academics Beth Fischer. family in the presentation.

Julie and Dominic Bardos share Jenny Award honors At the Honors Day ceremony in mid-May, Julie and Dominic Bardos were presented the “Jenny Award” by Principal Sondra Morris and Athletic Director Caleb Marcum. The Jenny Award is named for St. Benedict’s former student, Jenny Rybczyk who died in a car accident in the fall of 1991 following her graduation from SBA. She was an athlete with determination and desire, giving 100% in everything she did. Each year the award is presented by a vote of the coaches, to adult volunteers who give to the school in various ways - by donating service, time, treasure or a combination of these in order to benefit all SBA athletes. The Bardos family has given so much even when SBA was a k-12 school. Julie has been an integral part of the Spirit Shop operation, the Home and School Association and the Athletic Commissioner organization. Dominic has shared his wife with SBA for many years, but has contributed, as well, most recently has photographer extraordinairé for many athletic, artistic and academic events.
