From the Principal To all our SBA families and friends, It’s hard to believe that we are approaching the end of another school year. Our campus is an exciting place to be. For our seniors, the “checklist” has begun and at the top of the list is the day to put the graduation invitations in the mail! Everyday I’m reminded of the days they have left until the big day. I can safely say, that some of the faculty, who teach seniors, probably have their own “checklist” started, too! Looking over the transcripts and portfolios of our students is a humbling experience for me. Not only do our students make the grades, our students are very giving of their time and talents and that is a testament to their parents, family, church and previous schools. We cannot thank you all enough for the many sacrifices you make so that your child can receive or has received a St. Benedict education. We’re blessed because of our many families who are a part of SBA in any way – past, present and future! I hope you enjoy this issue of our newsletter as we get to share a little bit of our good news with you. Go Eagles! God Bless, Sondra Morris, Principal

From the Editor As we come close to the end of another school year (our 11th as a high school only) we also close out major events and recognitions that our students and faculty have achieved. The summer issue of On Eagles’ Wings will not only be the Annual Report for development, but also for senior accomplishments and highlights.Yet, we have so many items in this issue that compliment what they have accomplished this semester. Because there has been so much to tell about, this issue is getting to you a little late, but there’s no doubt in my mind that you will be glad to see it all. Enjoy and be looking for the Annual Report in August/September. Happy Summer! Christ’s Blessings, Sharon Masterson, Editor, Director of Communications & Sports Information

Parent Connection News from Home and School Association With the school year coming to a close, it is time that we once again say THANK YOU to all the volunteers who have been working tirelessly over the last several months. What great events and turnouts we have had. Thanks to all who brought in teacher treats throughout the school year and continue to help us as we wrap up these last few weeks. The faculty and staff are always appreciative and we received many thank you notes, many of which can be found on the SBA Home and School Facebook page. LIKE us if you haven’t already. The Teacher Appreciation luncheon was a tremendous success. Thank you to Jennifer Bougeios and Toni Greismer for the great job they did in organizing the event and pulling everything together. We are grateful to our many parents who donated items, cash and their talents into helping make this day special for our teachers and staff. The end of year student/parent functions were a huge success beginning with the Father-Daughter Dance on March 22, the Father/Son bowling outing and our Mother/Daughter Tea were

both on April 12 and our final senior event, the Mother/Son Dinner was April 26. Everyone attending these events had the opportunity to make special memories. With all these events you can see why we need our parent volunteers so much! SBA Home and School is only as successful as our parent volunteers allow us to be. We are a VOLUNTEER organization and we need VOLUNTEERS!!!!! With several of our current volunteer parents having students graduate, we have MANY positions OPEN and needing to be filled. Find out more about the events and how easy it is to be involved and volunteer in your student’s high school career. Visit our Home and School page on the website by clicking on PARENTS and finding the link on the left side of the screen. Most of the events are listed and give a description of what is needed. Get a group of friends together and make it fun for yourself and for all involved. Lastly, our Annual Used Uniform Sale will be June 1 and 2. Please look for information in Monday Mail and online.

The recent Trivia Night, “All Things Southern,” held on behalf of Project Graduation was filled to capacity and a huge success. Project Graduation is the senior lock-in at Incredible Pizza the night of their graduation.

About Our Faith Catholic Education as an “Art of Accompaniment”

of the Roman Catholic Church.” This means that what orders all of our day-to-day activities (in all areas: academic, administrative, extracurricular) is our commitment to Catholic Identity, which is to be concerned with the whole person as he or she grows in relation to Jesus Christ. Basically, we are here to help them become saints! This seems like a pretty tall order— however, the pedagogical method of Christ and the Church gives our educators and administrators a solid framework within which to operate. This pedagogical method is what Pope Francis terms the “theology of accompaniment.” In his article, Archbishop Cordileone unpacks Pope Francis’ understanding of this, saying that the primary role of the educator in a Catholic school is to “journey with our young people out of the darkness into the light of the risen Christ.” This theology of ‘accompaniment,’ which is the pedagogical method Christ Himself lived, seeks to meet the student where he or she is in her spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional journey. Pope Francis says that to accompany each other in such a way is to “remove our sandals before the sacred ground of the other” (Evangelii Gaudium 169). This means that our school is ultimately here to serve, and that we stand side by side each student in our common pursuit of what is True, Good and Beautiful. To be sure, accompanying the students on this journey requires an open mind and an open dialogue. However, as G.K. Chesterton says, “Merely having an open mind is nothing. The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something solid.” The solid food of the truth of Christ nourishes the whole person—mind, body and soul—and allows them to become adults in the faith (Hebrews 5:11-14). Journeying with and serving our students are our primary objectives, and we see that the best way to do this is to humbly communicate the joy, love and truth present in the Gospel message.

By Hannah Keegan Director of Spiritual Affairs “The aim of all Christian education, moreover, is to train the believer in an adult faith that can make him a “new creation,” capable of bearing witness in his surroundings to the Christian hope that inspires him.” Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI Christ has risen! Alleluia! Happy Easter season to each of you, and to your families! In our last issue of On Eagles Wings I outlined what “Catholic Education” means, broadly speaking. In sum, Catholic Education is the comprehensive cultivation of the student as he or she grows closer to Christ. It seeks to “educate what is human in us,” and in doing so, opens students up to the beautiful world we exist within. In other words, Catholic education—in all of its dimensions—illuminates the inherent form and intelligibility within all of creation. San Francisco’s Archbishop, Salvatore Cordileone, maintains that “a Catholic education draws out all the potential in the whole person of every student, leading the student to true human flourishing and thus becoming the person God has created them to be.” Catholic schools exist to bring students into the light of Christ—to “help young people attain holiness in their lives.” St. Benedict at Auburndale’s mission statement is clear: SBA is “an atmosphere permeated with the aims, values and teachings

Please continue to pray for us!

Welcomed Addition to SBA Chapel St. Benedict High School received a very nice addition to our chapel furnishings when Billy and Madonna Bond donated a votive candle stand to the school. Mr. and Mrs. Bond are long-time friends of SBA and also have two children who are graduates of the school. They currently have grandchildren attending SBA and Mrs. Bond serves on the school’s Advisory Board. Mrs. Bond expressed interest in providing the votive candle stand, as she knew that many students and faculty wanted to have that devotion available to them. The stand was placed in memory of Mrs. Bond’s mother Marilyn Benskin and Dave Masterson, former IT Director and husband of Communications Director Sharon Masterson and father of three children, also SBA alums. In December, Father Robert Marshall, Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, blessed the new stand with Mrs. Bond and John Paul Masterson lighting the first two candles. SBA is so grateful to Madonna & Billy Bond for this wonderful addition to the chapel.

We Continue Marching In January, SBA students and chaperones, traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Annual March for Life. The date marked the 42nd Anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, legalizing abortion in the United States. Our Students for Life group organized the trip, again, this year. A special stop at the St. Cecilia Motherhouse in Nashville was the first highlight of the group’s trip. Once arriving in Washington, the travelers visited some of our Nation’s historical sights, followed by the beautiful Mass at the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. This Mass is concelebrated by several cardinals, archbishops, bishops, priests and deacons from all over the country. The next morning, after a very early rising, the group witnessed with youth from all over the country the Youth Rally & Mass at the Verizon Center and then made their way to Constitution Avenue to march with approximately 500,000 prolifers (mostly high school and college age) to the Supreme Court building. Traveling with the group this year were Father Partrick Gallagher, Father Patrick Hirtz and Chris Koch, Diocesan COO. SBA is always proud to be a part of the group.

Trip chaperones visited with some of the sisters following evening prayer at the Motherhouse (from left) SBA teacher Mr. Masterson, former SBA Assistant Principals Sister Helen Marie, O.P. and Sister Mary Charles, O.P, current theology teachers Sister Rita Marie, O.P. and Mrs. Keegan, Father Gallagher, Sister Mary Johanna, Mr. Koch and current theology Sister Marie Monique.

Students met up with the National Students for Life Kentucky/Tennessee Regional Coordinator Alejandro Capote (left front) at the March for Life Headquarters in D.C.

About Our Faith

The SBA group finally ends the march in front of the Supreme Court building after a long afternoon of witnessing for life.

Our Sisters Rita Marie & Marie Monique greet Superintendent of Schools Janet Donato and SBA students & alum Mary Barczak (’09) at the Sisters’ Open House in Honor of the Church’s Year of the Consecrated Life. These students helped prepare the house and greet the visitors. How blessed we are to have the Sisters at SBA.

SBA students traditionally participate in the Diocesan-wide “Search Weekend.” Students attend and help lead this prayerful event, helping bringing young people closer to the Faith.

Holy Week at SBA always includes the Stations of the Cross during theology class.

The Spiritual Affairs Department is investigating the opportunity for some to travel to Philadelphia in September for the Holy Father’s visit at the World Meeting of Families. On Sunday, September 27 is the Festival of Families that includes a Papal Mass. There will be strict criteria in order to participate along with the cost being assumed by each traveler. More will be forthcoming about this exciting opportunity and anyone interested in helping with the cost, please contact Spiritual Affairs Director Hannah Keegan, keeganh@sbaeagles.org, 260-2846.

Faculty Focus Faculty In-Service Gears Up for 1:1 Education

During many of our “First Wednesday” professional days, our faculty has had the opportunity to hear professionals speaking on technology in preparation of our 1:1 initiative. Updated infrastructure and new equipment will begin arriving soon and being installed in order to provide the best academic education for our students. All this will be unveiled in the near future, but our faculty will have had and continues to have a wealth of professional development to get ready.

Ms. Burke Gains Some New Friends During Spring Break, Language Department Chair and Spanish teacher Laura Burke visited the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary located in Kanab, Utah in Angel Canyon. It’s the home of almost 2,000 animals. In 1984 the founders set out to help animals that couldn’t speak for themselves. Best Friends has been instrumental in the Save Them All movement to save abandoned and abused animals and reduce the animals killed in shelters each year. Laura had heard of them years ago when a television show, “Dogtown,” told the story about part of the shelter. Laura learned that Best Friends is the largest companion animal sanctuary in the USA. They, of course, help dogs, cats, rabbits and birds. But they also rescue horses, pigs, goats and sheep. The sanctuary is in a beautiful location and receives more than 20,000 volunteers each year. Last year they adopted out almost 300 puppies, about 500 cats and 500 dogs. While there, she spent time in Piggy Paradise and Dogtown. She tells us, “The pigs were an unexpected delight! They are very smart and very funny. While in Dogtown, I took dogs to Shy Dog class, walked and fed dogs, went to puppy class and puppy daycare. It was great! I’d absolutely go again. They are education driven, committed to saving pets and very sincere in their mission. The founders were on site daily and the caregivers were tremendous!”

We Serve

“A very special thank you to Patsy Rush. She is over the Science Department at St. Benedict in Memphis. This is the 2nd year that Patsy’s students have done a donation drive for the Tunica Humane Society. Both years, the results of their efforts have been nothing short of AMAZING... We couldn’t believe the stuff they delivered to us today.” These words are from a FaceBook post made by the Tunica Humane Society on April 2 when a truck load of items was delivered to them. This year’s donation far surpassed last year’s and the organization was thrilled.

In December, during exam week, freshman Shayla Clancy heard about the Porter Leath toy drive on the news. She emptied her gift closet and helped donate toys to the cause. We’re proud of her giving spirit!

On And Off Campus Annual Angotti Family Christmas Concert at Cannon

Speakers Present Tough Messages

US Assistant District Attorney Deb Ireland (West-Tenn) visited with SBA parents and students in January presenting a graphic overview of some of the harmful effects of social media and internet usage. Prior to a general student assembly, Ms. Ireland spoke to parents in the DLC.

Another guest speaker was Assistant DA Michael McCusker, who visited with SBA juniors and seniors in a pre-junior/senior prom meeting. He presented on the consequences of drinking and driving. Each student was given a picture of Rachel Luttrell with the endorsement of her family. She was killed in 2010 as a passenger in a car of a friend who was driving under the influence and never got to attend prom. McCusker asked each student to take Rachel to the prom by placing her picture in their wallets and purses. He also asked each student to write “I promise” on the back of the picture, this to remind them to not drink and drive and to look out for the welfare of their friends. He ended the presentation with a video tribute to Rachel and said, “Remember that you are valued and loved. You can never be replaced.” McCusker’s poignant message provided a thought-provoking afternoon for SBA upper classmen.

SBA Introduces New Varsity Football Coach In December, Principal Sondra Morris and Athletic Director Caleb Marcum announced that Scott Samsel has been named the school’s ninth Head Football Coach (Auburndale & St. Benedict combined). In her announcement, Morris said, “We have hired Scott Samsel to serve as our Head Football Coach. In addition to his coaching duties, Coach Samsel will also be Director of Athletic Development. “ Coach Samsel is a graduate of the University of Mississippi and has many years of experience, particularly as a head coach. He has served as head coach at Independence (MS), Henry County (TN), Aberdeen (MS), Lafayette County (MS) and Olive Branch (MS), achieving an overall head coaching record of 199-84. His teams have annually made appearances in state championship playoffs. Remarkably, during his previous eight seasons as head coach of Olive Branch High School (2006 – 2013), Samsel’s teams would make the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) state playoffs in seven of the eight years in Mississippi’s highest classification (first in Class 5A then in Class 6A beginning in 2009). In these eight years, Coach Samsel compiled an 84 - 23 record with his teams finishing either as the Region 1 Runner-up or Champions in six of the eight years. For seven seasons, his squads made it to the second round or higher in the MHSAA playoffs, with three North Half Mississippi Championship appearances, then winning the Class 6A North Half Title and Mississippi Class 6A State Championship in 2011. Coach Samsel has accomplishments designated as best in school history by an Olive Branch head football coach in categories of Most Wins by a Senior Class (2008), Best Teams by Winning Percentage and Most Wins in a Season. He also placed in the top five as Best Winning Percentage by a Senior Class (2007). Samsel’s teams have broken numerous team and individual OBHS records as well, all accomplished while playing the toughest schedule (non-regional and regional) in school history. In just eight seasons, Samsel had the second highest number of victories (84) and second highest winning percentage (.785) among the 17 head football coaches in OBHS history since the football program began in 1926. His overall record of (199-84) is the highest number of victories in DeSoto County’s history. Samsel’s 84 OBHS victories rank second

behind Leslie Pool who, in his 23 years at OBHS, had 181 victories. Samsel’s winning percentage (.785) follows Tom Marino who, in his only season at OBHS, was 8-2 for a .800 percentage. Coach Samsel is excited and has already started preparing the team for next season. “I see great things for this program at SBA,” Samsel said. “I’m excited about the possibilities here. This is a beautiful school with a great reputation for putting students at the top of the priority list. I know of the integrity and the support the administration provides for success. We’re going to roll up our sleeves and get to work.”

A “Meet and Greet” was held for Coach Samsel and his family in December and recently an old friend, former CBHS Head Coach Tom Nix, (at left) stopped by to see Coach Samsel to wish him luck.

Alums Ainsley LeBlanc (’13) and Morgan Patrick (’14) have been selected to the prestigious University of Alabama Capstone Men and Women. This group of students serves as official ambassadors of The University of Alabama. They have been part of the University’s public-relations program since 1962 to ensure an extra measure of hospitality and making visitors feel they have experienced a truly exceptional place. They provide a warm reception for guests and communicate a better understanding of all aspects of the University. Capstone Men and Women assist the University President’s office, admissions and alumni during functions held on campus and in other locations, as well as host daily tours of the campus for prospective students and other visitors.

CBU 2015 Homecoming Royalty hails from SBA, Trey McGinnis (’12) Homecoming King and Jonathan Holliday (’11) Homecoming Court.

Kevin Rotzoll (’14) recently stopped by to “unofficially” ask Mrs. Morris to the 2015 SBA Prom. Kevin took Mrs. Morris’ daughter Clare to the 2014 prom and Mrs. Morris kiddingly mentioned that she was waiting for the invite. Kevin “took her up on it” this year.

The wedding of Cahryn Anderson (’00) and Drew Mallette in September, 2013 offered the opportunity for many SBA friends from the class of 2000 and sister Carla (’03) to come together for a festive time, bottom row, from left, Jill Schaffer Grimes, Julie Clary, Bobby Shores, David Brocato; top row, from left, Carla Anderson, Stephanie Bird Blakley, Cahryn, Brendon Plumpton.

SBA alumni were active in the annual Angotti Family Christmas program, again this year. The very-talented Michael Robinson (’12), who regularly sings with the Angotti group, always provides the audience with a beautiful solo. This year, Jordan Wells (’04) helped direct the children’s choir consisting of his students from Sacred Heart School in Southaven, Ms.

The friends and some of their spouses got together this past fall for breakfast, (from left) Emily Shores, Brendon and Whitney Plumpton, Rachel and David Brocato, Jill Schaffer Grimes, Bobby Shores, Julie Clary and Cahryn Anderson Mallette.

Bret Bilbrey (’01) visits with Amanda and Nathan Cummings (’10) at their recent wedding.
