FROM THE PRINCIPAL Greetings from SBA! It seems like yesterday we were welcoming our students back for another year, and here we are wrapping up another school year. Your children, our students, have excelled in not only the classroom, but it the extracurriculars as well. We were honored to host Bishop David Talley on campus for our May Crowning and All-School Mass. Bishop Talley noted the motto on our gym wall, “Grounded in Faith. Elevated by Excellence.” in his homily and that is what SBA is all about. In partnership with you, we are preparing our students for life and most importantly, eternal life. We thank you for the trust you have placed in us for this most important time in your child’s life. We thank those who have partnered with us in the past as well as those who will be partnering with us in the future. We are blessed with an outstanding faculty composed of both religious and laity. The witness of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia is beyond words. Please take a few minutes to look through this edition of “On Eagles Wings” to see for yourself the many great things going on at SBA, and we would love to have you back on campus to see first-hand the many great things happening! Go Eagles and God Bless! Sondra Morris
FROM THE EDITOR As we close out the 2018-19 year, we highlight the wonderful blessing our school, as well as all of Memphis, received with the naming and installation of our sixth Bishop, Bishop David P. Talley. Along with this news, we spotlight our 2019 Valedictorian and Salutatorian and National Merit Finalist. These individuals have and will impact all our lives in such positive ways. They clearly are soaring Eagles! I hope you enjoy this issue and it teases you a little for our Annual Report coming up in the fall which will include all the end of year awards, ceremonies and fun! Have a blessed and safe summer and keep SBA in your prayers, as we keep you in ours! God Bless, Sharon Masterson, Director of Communications and Sports Information

Development From the Advancement Office Greetings from the Advancement office. I hope you’re all enjoying the summer and excited about the coming school year. I know we are! Thanks to many of you, 2018-2019 was a good year. “Tickets for Tuition,” our raffle for a free semester of tuition, generated more than $25,000. #iSupportSBA, our one-day fundraiser on the Global Day of Giving, topped the previous years’ mark. Our spring fundraiser, “Night at the Nest” tripled in size, and The Blessing Fund saw a modest increase in donations. It was a successful year, but one that leaves us plenty of room upon which to improve in 2019-2020. Let me explain why we fundraise. Like other private schools, we fundraise to make up for the gaps that tuition dollars can’t address. The Blessing Fund helps us bridge those gaps and assists us in every aspect of school life from academics to athletics, the arts, activities, technology and facilities. Essentially, The Blessing Fund impacts every student at St.Benedict, in some way, every day. The fact is, only 40% of our families contributed to our fundraising efforts this year. When I see that number, I see opportunity. We have an opportunity for tremendous financial growth, which will have an immediate impact in and around SBA, but we can’t do it without that other 60%. In order to further our mission, we rely on the support of our families, friends and benefactors. As we look to the future at St. Benedict, we need your assistance to reach the lofty goals that include continuing to provide the very best educational and spiritual experience for our children. I ask that you be cheerful and sacrificial and help us get our 40% participation rate to 100%, and that you make a gift today by using the attached envelope, or online at www.sbaeagles.org/donate. Thank you, God Bless and Go Eagles! Matt Stark Director of Advancement

About Our Faith FROM THE DEACON’S DESK For those who are not as familiar, the Easter Vigil is that long Mass…that really, REALLY long Mass…at Easter. But, to those of us who are “in the know,” the Easter Vigil is a precious gem to the Church; an ancient and sacred liturgy filled with rich signs and symbols of our faith and most fully radiating the hope to be found in the Lord’s Resurrection. The blessing of the Paschal Candle by the deacon, the recounting of salvation history through the readings, the Easter lilies, the incense, the chanting and the singing all combine as a feast for the senses telling us in no uncertain terms, “He is risen!” But, for some, the Baptisms of new Christians and welcoming into Full Communion of those of other faiths is easily the highlight of the evening. And for our SBA family, this Easter Vigil was especially memorable. This year, several members of the SBA community had been preparing to grow ever closer to the Lord and His Church through discernment, prayer and study culminating in receiving the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church at the Vigil. Senior Gabi Ray was Baptized, Confirmed and received her First Holy Communion. Sophomores Alexie Griffin and Ella Williams made their Profession of Faith, were Confirmed and received their First Holy Communion. These three young ladies received private as well as classroom instruction while here at SBA. Rachel Dressman (wife of our very own Coach Nick Dressman) attended RCIA classes this year at St. Louis Catholic Church which led her to a Profession of the Faith, Confirmation and First Communion as well. Even our Athletic Director, Will Hudgens, got in on the act. Will, a life-long Catholic, received his Confirmation to complete his Sacraments of Initiation. Here at St. Benedict at Auburndale we take faith formation seriously – not just a “classroom” knowledge of faith, but the joys of a true and abiding faith in the Person of Jesus Christ. And we can see the fruits of that serious faith formation in the members of our SBA community who have sought to grow closer to God through their experience here on our campus. These five members of our family who are now receiving the fullness of God’s Divine Revelation in the Sacraments are just another example of who we are as a school, and why I am so blessed to be a part of SBA. Congratulations to all those who participated in the Easter Vigil and received the Easter Sacraments, and may the Holy Spirit continue to make fruitful the important work of St. Benedict at Auburndale. May the blessings of this Easter season be yours and may the hope of the Resurrection always lead you closer to heaven.

Headline News Bishop Talley – New Shepherd for the Diocese of Memphis and West Tennessee On April 2, 2019, Bishop David P. Talley, M.S.W., J.C.D was installed as the sixth Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Memphis. Bishop David Prescott Talley was born on September 11, 1950, in Columbus, Georgia. He was raised as a Southern Baptist but converted to Catholicism while a student at Auburn University. He was received into the Catholic Church at the age of 24 at Saint Mary Church, Opelika, Alabama. Family members of Bishop Talley remain faithful Baptists, including a brother who is a deacon. Noting that his background gives him a broad view, he has said, “I do know faith across the spectrum.” After his studies at Auburn, he obtained a master’s degree in social work from the University of Georgia and worked as a case worker in Fulton County, Georgia, to protect children from abuse. He studied for the priesthood at Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology in Indiana and obtained a Master of Divinity degree in 1989. Bishop Talley was ordained to the priesthood on June 3, 1989, at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta. As a priest of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, Bishop Talley served as a parochial vicar, administrator, and pastor of a number of parishes. From 1993 to 1998, Bishop Talley studied at Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he obtained a doctorate in canon law. Bishop Talley also served part-time in the archdiocesan Tribunal, as the Director of Vocations, and as Chancellor of the Archdiocese. In 2001, he was named a chaplain to His Holiness Saint John Paul II, with the tide of Monsignor. One of his roles in the Atlanta Archdiocese was as chaplain to the disabilities ministry. He has said that his experience ministering among people with disabilities, which began at his first parish assignment, is key to his spiritual life. ”All they can do is ask the Lord for help. That simplicity and humility is where I think the church should be humble before God,” he said in an interview in 2013. On December 17, 2012, while serving as pastor of Saint Brigid Church in Johns Creek, Georgia, Pope Benedict XVI named Msgr. Talley an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, and he was ordained to the episcopacy on April 2, 2013. His episcopal motto is Dabo vobis cor novum, “He will give you a new heart.” Bishop Talley also served as vicar general of the Archdiocese of Atlanta and Director of Priest Personnel and was a member of the Council of Priests and the Committee for Ongoing Formation. On September 21, 2016, Bishop Talley was appointed coadjutor bishop of Alexandria, Louisiana and became the twelfth Bishop of Alexandria on February 2, 2017, upon the retirement of Bishop Ronald P. Herzog. On March 5, 2019, it was announced that His Holiness Pope Francis had named Bishop Talley as the sixth Bishop of Memphis. Welcome to Memphis, Bishop Talley. Achievements Juniors Presented Scholarships for Essays Remmert Award For the 6th consecutive year, the Remmert Family Memorial Scholarship has been presented to St. Benedict students. This year’s recipients are juniors Dante Carrasco and Marisa Mata. A memorial scholarship endowment fund to benefit rising juniors and seniors was established at the Catholic Diocese of Memphis six years ago to commemorate the lives of Herman Albert and Berenice Agnes Remmert for their longstanding commitment to Catholic education. Mr. and Mrs. Remmert’s connection to Catholic education in the Diocese dates to their arrival in Memphis in the 1950s. Over the next 25 years, they supported seven children through their completion of higher Catholic education. Following their deaths and to honor their wishes of establishing a long-term legacy to Catholic education the Remmert children created this memorial endowment. It is a reflection of their earlier commitment to Catholic
education and helping students succeed in Diocese of Memphis Catholic Schools. (from left) Seamas Carrasco, Maureen Carrasco (Dante’s mother), Rick Carrasco (Dante’s father), Dante Carrasco, Steve Remmert, Superintendent of Catholic Schools Janet Donato, Russ Remmert, Loretta Remmert Jackson and Bill Jackson, SBA Principal Sondra Morris, Eugenio Mata (Marisa’s father), Christopher Mata (Marisa’s brother), Marisa Mata, Kim Mata (Marisa’s mother), SBA Assistant Principals Dr. Beth Fischer and Deacon Jeff Drzycimski. Steve Remmert said, “Honoring students in the Diocese each year affords us to come together as a family to honor our parents and to continue our spiritual connection with them. It also celebrates outstanding students. Each year they seem to be more impressive.
And, lastly, we are able to honor the servant leadership of our Diocesan high schools and the administrations and faculties. It touches our hearts how strong the culture of excellence is present and provided to these students. This is what strengthens them each year.” Russell Award The Russell Award is named after former parent Bobby Russell who was killed by a driver under the influence. The Russell family, holding SBA in high regard, established this scholarship to remember Bobby. They wished that it be awarded to a student who makes application by an essay on the importance of Catholic education along with a resume and teacher recommendations. This year’s winner, decided by her essay on “What a Catholic Education means to me,” is junior Erin Herbers. In her essay, Erin wrote, “Catholic education means I am free to express myself and my faith in a safe place. I love being able to come to school and discuss with my Theology class anything that is on my mind pertaining to God. When I talk to my friends who attend public school, they mention that there are no crucifixes or how they don’t pray, this seems foreign to me.” She also mentioned that the annual March for Life trip had a special impact on her and helped her realize that all the marchers were marching for those that can’t speak for themselves. Erin lost her dad in 2016 and her mother is now experiencing a bout with cancer. She is certainly a deserving student for this award.

She was nominated by a student, students or families during the year and she was recognized this spring at the news station’s annual Educators of the Year luncheon. Ironically, the other two teachers have connections to SBA in addition to their respective schools.

On and Off Campus WE SERVE #knowloveandserveGod Throughout each year, SBA serves others in so many ways – food, clothing and baby items, drives, marching for life, time, treasure and talent of every kind. Following are some of the serving opportunities in which our school contributed in huge ways.
In November, a Jeans Day generated $1,500 for St. John the Evangelist School in Panama City, FL damaged by Hurricane Michael. On behalf of SBA, Executive Director of Memphis Botanic Gardens and former SBA Advisory Board and alum parent Mike Allen presented the donation to St. John Principal Dr. Vicki Parks and one her students.
Hats off to these Spanish Honor Society members, under direction of Ms. Espin, who made these fleece Chemo/ comfort blankets as their service project for Memphis Baptist Cancer Center patients to use during their treatments. Great job, Eagles! Thank you for your service!
Each year during the week of the St. Benedict/ Christian Brothers football game in October, St. Benedict, CBHS and St. Agnes Schools collaborate to raise funds for WINGS, the support group for West Cancer Center. During half-time of the game at SBA, school representatives (from left) Matthew Li, St. Benedict SGA President, Sarah Wray, Secretary of the St. Agnes SGA and Gerard Tavoletti, Christian Brothers Leadership Council President presented the commemorative check for $2400 to Keri Burnette (center right), Wings Support Services Manager of Public Relations & Special Events.
Members of the 2019 senior class spent a day at St. Paul School cleaning and helping the sisters and teachers organize the classrooms. Our students worked incredibly hard with giving attitudes. The SBA students also had some time with the St. Paul students at their Christmas parties and donated $500 toward repairs, PE Equipment and school supplies.

Sophomore Laura Schaffler and seniors Tori Cappadona and Lance Jamias attended the 4th Annual St. Jude Scholars of Tomorrow Symposium. The program is offered through St. Jude Children’s Hospital to the top students in the mid-south. Upon application, a St. Jude panel selects the students from a set of criteria including grades and teacher recommendations. SBA Science Chair/Biology teacher Patsy Rush and Anatomy/Forensics/Microbiology teacher Jamie Schneider were the SBA recommending teachers. The students were given a case study and followed the patient (on paper) from arrival at the hospital, through diagnosis and treatment. The budding scientists read scans and learn how to sequence the DNA to find the mutation causing the cancer, followed by how to treat it. They were able to meet with St. Jude doctors about careers and how to achieve them. Each student received a pocket microscope to attach to their cell phones. Besides being very informative, it was a fun day for both students and teachers. With our excellent science department and teachers, SBA has offered students who are selected for this prestigious program since its inception.
Senior Alexa Pangonas was selected one of 26 young women from Memphis-area high schools as Memphis Business Journal’s “Girls Who Mean Business.” This initiative recognizes young women for academics, service and extracurricular accomplishments. UNPLANNED Because of our history as the Pro-Life School of Memphis, SBA was asked to host the Pro-Life Roundtable Presentation in early May. The main presenter was internationally known Abby Johnson, author of the book Unplanned and subject of the recent, well-received movie by the same name. Abby was brought to Memphis by the Memphis Pro-life Coalition and she was joined by Leah Jacobson, founder and CEO of the Guiding Star Project. Abby, former director of the largest abortion clinic in the country at the time in Austin, TX, is now an active and vocal member of the pro-life community. She is also founder of the And Then There Were None Project for former employees of abortion clinics. SBA was privileged and honored to have this event on our campus with over 500 pro-life activists from throughout the Memphis area in attendance.
The SBA Robotic Team was the hit of the show at the St. Ann-Bartlett Stem Night (from left) sophomore Brianna Duhart, junior Jeffrey Li, seniors Luke Tolbert, Allen Jimmerson and
At the Catholic Schools Counselors meeting, they were introduced to the SBA “Drone Guy,” Brandon Turk of Midsouth Aerials, who is one of our Drone Class teachers. The SBA Drone Class was the first in the nation for high schools sponsored by WOZ-U.
The movie Unplanned was released to the public in late April and SBA was given 40 tickets to distribute in the pre-airing event at the Cordova Malco. Because of the R rating given by the film industry, only students 18 and over could attend. We actually had a waiting list for the tickets. Three of the attendees were Deacon Jeff Drcycimski, senior Jesse Hollingsworth and junior Coco Armour.

Sports THE SBA WAY
Welcome, Coach Hudgens, as SBA AD St. Benedict at Auburndale High School Principal Sondra Morris announced the addition of Will Hudgens (left) as the school’s new Athletic Director, taking over the reins from 10-year veteran Caleb Marcum, who left in March for a job in the corporate environment. Assisting Hudgens is Head Baseball Coach Brandon Patton, who will also serve as Assistant AD on compliance and facilities and Nick Dressman, Assistant AD for finance and marketing. In making the announcement, Morris said, “Will has been a great addition to our staff when he came to us last spring from Houston High School. He served as football Offensive Coordinator this fall and has assumed a lot of roles, including Head Track Coach this Spring. Not only does he have a superior work ethic, he is familiar with the Memphis High School sports scene and is well-respected among his peers. We look forward to a great working relationship and with the continuation of the system and vision set in place by Coach Marcum.” Hudgens will step out of the coaching ranks to lead the school’s Athletic Department full-time. He recently welcomed new Head Football Coach Marlon Walls, new Head Volleyball Coach Amy Hendrihovsky and new Head Girls Basketball Coach Eric Daniels. Hudgens prepped at Ridgeway High School in Memphis and went on to play both football and baseball with the University of Memphis Tigers. As Head Football Coach at with the Houston Mustangs prior to joining SBA, he compiled a 29-26 record and guided them to the playoffs for five years. We welcome new coaches to “The Nest” One of the first jobs for Coach Hudgens as AD has been to name three new coaches to the athletic program.

Sports Marlon Walls – Football First to join was Marlon Walls as new Head Football Coach following the retirement of Coach John Cooley. Marlon Walls is no stranger to SBA after serving three years on staff as Defensive Coordinator and assistant coach before a short time with Hernando High School last season. Coach Walls has extensive high school coaching experience serving in various roles including defensive and offensive line, tight ends, linebackers and special teams. Coach Walls was a four-year Letterman at the University of Tennessee- Knoxville and a two-year Captain and member of the Player’s Staff. Coach Walls commented, “My belief is that the game of football, at all levels, is a teaching tool and an opportunity. It is a tool to shape young boys into men, teaching them the value of loyalty, honor, pride, hard work, competition, teamwork and character. Good football players have to engage in a process of shifting their focus away from self and onto the team. I truly believe that this game allows young men to learn these qualities through experience. It is an opportunity for them not only to learn the value of these qualities, but also to build and instill them into their lives. Moreover, it gives young men the chance to form bonds and relationships that only come by being a part of a team, a part of this game. These are lessons that last a lifetime.” Principal Mrs. Sondra Morris stated, “We are extremely happy to welcome Marlon Walls to our school staff and as Head Football Coach. He will mold our boys into young men on and off the playing field.”
Amy Hendrihovsky – Volleyball It is with great excitement that we recently announced the hiring of veteran volleyball coach Amy Hendrihovsky as our new Head Coach. She takes over for Sammie Ruttan, who moved out of the city. After spending almost twenty years coaching at the NCAA I and II levels, Coach Hendrihovsky has enjoyed the challenge of taking a group of individuals and blending the cultures and values into becoming a team that is united on reaching a common goal. The last seven years she was given the opportunity of being a Head Coach and gaining quality experience building a competitive culture, recruiting quality athletes, improving the athlete’s knowledge of the game, as well as managing and leading the day-to-day responsibilities of a women’s volleyball program at the NCAA-I level. With her knowledge, experience and confidence as a leader, she will certainly be an asset to the storied SBA volleyball program and overall athletic coaching staff. Coach Hendrihovsky says of her experience and philosophy, “Prior to my collegiate coaching career, I completed my undergraduate degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Mathematics. My original plan was to teach and coach at the high school level. Although I chose a different path initially and thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the collegiate level, I do feel the best thing for my career and family was to move near our family in Memphis and pursue coaching at the high school level. My main purpose during my coaching tenure has been to guide incoming student-athletes into becoming confident, courageous and disciplined young women prepared for the world ahead of them. I had inspiring coaches at the high school and collegiate level that guided me through the maturation of child to adult and I believe I can continue my purpose at the high school level as well. Such beliefs have enabled me to become a positive and effective coach as well as a leader. With this opportunity at SBA, I will work hard to move our volleyball program forward and serve as a positive role model for the athletes, students and community. The quality experiences I have had the last twenty years have contributed to my development as an educator and belief in what is important in building a consistent championship level team as well. By showing care for the athletes, combined with my love and passion for the game, will foster a culture of commitment, integrity, gratefulness, learning and resiliency. We will establish a solid work ethic that spreads beyond the court into a complete intellectual and physical way of life. It’s an honor to be here and we’ve already hit the ground running with player and parents’ meetings, scheduling and summer workouts. I’m excited for the opportunity.”

Eric Daniels – Women’s Basketball
Also, no stranger to SBA, Coach Daniels returns to SBA as Head Coach following the departure of Coach Marcum to the corporate world. Coach Daniels previously served as an assistant coach for the girls’ program. Eric has 17 years’ experience in basketball in the Memphis area, serving as an assistant or head coach at the AAU, elementary school and high school levels. He most recently was head coach with the Shelby County System at Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering. He was on staff at SBA from 2008-2015.
Coach Hudgens said of Eric, “Coach Daniels is an experienced coach and has a terrific reputation in all the coaching ranks. He has helped youth in the Memphis area reach their potential in the sport, but, more importantly, in becoming productive citizens in their communities. Eric is known for instilling a strong work ethic and will-to-win attitude. With Eric, we look forward to greatness in our girls’ basketball program.” Eric’s daughter, Symone (SBA-2011), is one of the all-time great players to come out of SBA. She finished her basketball career for the Lady Lynx at Rhodes College.

Alumni Spotlight As SBA is a school on a mission to bring students to heaven, these students also absorb the mission philosophy and many go on to perform works of mercy in their mission-driven lives. We offer four instances here, but there are hundreds more! Hats off to 2015 grad Hannah Jones who has been working with Net Ministries. NET Ministries challenges young Catholics to love Christ and embrace the life of the Church. Every August, 175 young Catholics aged 18-28 leave behind their jobs, school, family and friends to devote nine months to serving with the National Evangelization Teams (NET). Divided into 16 teams, they travel across the U.S. to share the Gospel with young people and their families. NET Ministries fulfills its mission by: proclaiming the Gospel of Christ through a personal witness of faith, inviting young people to live for Christ, forming young people in Christian character through the study and practice of their faith and equipping youth workers and young adults with the ministry skills needed for evangelization. Hannah was with Team #5 in the Southern California area. NET Ministries is under the ecclesiastical vigilance of the Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.
This past spring break, Tyler Griffis (2016) had a wonderful opportunity to make a difference. It was a FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) mission trip to Guyana, a country in northeast South America. Twelve college students, three FOCUS missionaries, a priest and a religious sister accompanied him to Guyana serving and working alongside locals. While there, he visited a small rural town of people and ran a mission for them that included games with the children, a Rosary Walk, Mass, dinner and bonfire. During the day, he visited the townspeople’s homes, many of whom may feel forgotten and insignificant, to try and bring joy to their lives by reminding them of their identity and dignity as children of God. Tyler says, “Through this mission trip, I feel I’ve grown closer to God by serving His people in Guyana and look forward to my next mission trip.”
Jordan Wilkins (SBA 2013) is not only making a name for himself on the football field with the Indianapolis Colts of the NFL, but also with his generous gift of time, talent and treasure for the Crohns and Colitis Foundation. On December 16, Jordan invited his cousin Michael Iovinelli (SBA freshman) to the Colts vs Dallas Cowboys game for the “Cleats with Cause” game. Jordan wore cleats for the Crohns and Colitis Foundation in honor of Michael and then gave them to him on the field. (The Colts shut out the Cowboys, 23-0). After the season, this spring, Jordan was the celebrity personality at the Memphis Take Steps to Walk for the Crohns and Colitis Foundation at the Botanic Gardens.
Several SBA alumni traveled to Indianapolis for the FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) SEEK 2019 conference. Over 17,000 attendees were able to hear inspiring talks, attend daily Mass and get to meet other Catholic college students from around the country! The SBA alums attending were (top from left) Erin Haff ’18, Joey Micheletti ‘16 (bottom from left) Caroline Gillenwater ‘18, Emily Gillenwater ‘15, Claire Tracy ‘16, Mary Mitchell ‘18, Julia Dugan ‘17, Grace Ann Thompson ‘17 and Emily Haff ‘18.
