DESIGN LIMITATIONS EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS OF SPACE

MODELING | HAND DRAFTING

Spaces are arranged according to limitations that are imposed by a surrounding context. Different materials were used to create hierarchy within the model. Micro lumber was used sparsely to imply importance. The alignment of materials create a sense of structure as well as direction.

BOOKSHELF ELABORATE DESIGN SPECIFIC TO A BOOK CONSTRUCTION

Natural vs. Industrial The concept of the bookshelf derived from the author’s underlying theme within his fairytales. The Industrial Revolution was taking place, and between the lines, he included his thoughts on the changing society. The bookshelf represents this change through wood (the natural) and the brackets and metal (Industrial). Society starts with the foundation of natural wood, which slowly starts to split as industry is introduced. The metal brackets hold together the shelf to represent the new reliance on the industrial advancements.

The new Sephora will consist of a model store which will serve as the foundation for the Sephora online virtual store. The concept for the store is illumination. True to the Sephora identity, the store will remain black and white, enhancing the colors of the products. Back-lit voids in the shelving, will allow for the products displayed to be illuminated, introducing color into the store. The fixtures are made of transparent plastics, in several parts, that allow for modularity and the fixtures to be easily constructed as well as replaced in case of breakage.

09 | ILLUMINATION

Constructed from one piece of bristol, the lamp shade consists of various slits that allow for the paper to fold inward. The light is able to travel through the folds creating the illusion of voids.

PRIVACY PANELS

A PERSONALIZED SPACE TO STUDY

BACK INTERIOR ELEVATION

The study space is meant to evoke and encourage studying. It will consist of a sloping wall that contains pivoting panels. These panels will serve as doors and windows. They also allow for students to determine the noise level as well as the privacy level. The panels can be opened or closed all the way, letting the student determine how much interaction he or she wants with the rest of the library. Incorporated on the panels will be a textual pattern that provides encouraging words to promote studying. The color scheme will remain neutral to ensure a calm environment.

PRIVACY PANELS

THE INSPIRATION FOR THE STRUCTURE CAME FROM STEVEN HOLL’S STORE FRONT FOR ART AND ARCHITECTURE. WHEN THE SPACE IS CLOSED AND PANELS ARE ALIGNED, THEY FORM A SIMPLE YET DELICATE PATTERN. IN THE STUDY SPACE, A WOOD FRAME IS THE STRUCTURE RESPONSIBLE FOR SUPPORTING THE PIVOTING PANELS. THE WOOD SLABS ARE STACKED TO CREATE TEXTURAL PATTERN.

THE DETAIL OF THE PIVOTING PANELS ARRIVED FROM STEVEN HOLL’S STORE FRONT FOR ART AND ARCHITECTURE. THE PANELS WERE DESIGNED TO BE MULTI-FUNCTIONAL WHICH ALLOWS THE USER TO CREATE THEIR OWN SPACE. MUCH LIKE THE STORE FRONT, THE STUDY SPACE CONTAINS PANELS THAT ALLOW STUDENTS TO CONTROL THE PRIVACY OF THE STUDY SPACE AS WELL AS THE NOISE LEVEL.

PRIVACY PANELS

THE PATTERN WAS INSPIRED BY THE STREETS OF NEW YORK. INCORPORATED INTO THE STUDY SPACE, IS A MODIFIED VERSION OF THE WALK/DONT WALK PATTERN. THE PATTERN IS PLACED ON THE PIVOTING PANELS TO ALLOW FOR TRANSPARENCY. IT CONSISTS OF ENCOURAGING WORDS TO INSPIRE STUDENTS AND PROVIDES A VISUAL STIMULATION.
