The project was to design a new study space for students within the library of Marywood University. We had to consider limited space, noise levels as well as individuality and study preferences.

The study space is meant to evoke and encourage studying. It will consist of a sloping wall that contains pivoting panels. These panels will serve as doors and windows. They also allow for students to determine the noise level as well as the privacy level. The panels can be opened or closed all the way, letting the student determine how much interaction he or she wants with the rest of the library. Incorporated on the panels will be a textual pattern that provides encouraging words to promote studying. The color scheme will remain neutral to ensure a calm environment.

Design and build studio allowed for a creative and experimental semester to pursue furniture design and fabrication. We were not given any limitations as to design, materials or methods of construction.

A great deal of time was dedicated to the study of the finger joint and its limitations. A series of models were built to understand the complexity and durability of the individual slivers of the finger joint. It became a study of limits, strength and detail. The overall silhouette was kept simple to enhance the focus on the arm pieces which were made up of the intricate finger joint detail.

SOLAR ANALYSIS After surverying the site, it was evident that the exsisting building lacked natural light exposure. Less than 30% of interior receives natural light throughout the day. Proposed design: Splitting the building in half, and pulling it apart would allow for more light exposure.

Another program of the building is the division between public and private. The building is split in three: commericals, residetial and a shared common space. This design also allows for the building to be heated by the sun. They are heated according to use: commercial during the day, and resisidential at night.
