Shrewsbury Garden Club Continuing Projects

Allen House Herb Garden – Shrewsbury The Herb Garden at the historic Allen House, designed, planted and dedicated by our garden club in 1974, has been maintained by our club since then. Some recent garden additions include a stone bench, updated brick walkways and landscaping (trees and shrubs). In 2013, a Franklinia alatamaha tree was planted near the newly renovated smokehouse. Each spring we tend to the garden, adding and/or replacing herbs as needed and label the plants. Over the summer, club members are scheduled weekly to care for the garden:  dead heading spent flowers  weeding the garden beds  weeding the brick walkway to the steps  watering the garden when necessary In the fall, we maintain the garden until “Tavernfest” (MCHA fundraiser), then add compost to enrich the soil before putting the garden bed to sleep for the winter.

Contact: Ellen Preissler and Terese Blake. Members participating: 14 6

Borough Hall – Shrewsbury

Our club members design and maintain all the planters seasonally at the courtyard entrance to Borough Hall and the Historical Society. Contact: Barbara Cook and Joanne Smith. Members participating: 4

Eagle Garden – Shrewsbury

An eagle sculpture from the collection of Dorothy Blair Manson (first female mayor of Shrewsbury, 1978-1989) was installed at the Shrewsbury Historical Society (SHS) in the fall of 2014 (dedicated on Shrewsbury Day) and has resulted in a more traditional design of the garden, formerly a cottage garden. The eagle statue (800-lb terra cotta with porcelain glaze) is now “perched” on a 7,000-lb slab of black slate in the re-imagined garden. Contact: Robin Blair. Members participating: 6

Greenhouse Garden – Shrewsbury

This garden, located at the entrance to Manson Park was once a greenhouse for the Wardell Estate. In 2008, the walled garden was designed and planted with David Austin roses, clematis and other fragrant flowers. Recently planted snowdrops and a crabapple tree will give four season interest. In the future, we are considering adding a gate, a bench, and a cold frame for early seedlings. Contact: Terese Blake. Members participating: 6

9/11 Memorial Gazebo – Shrewsbury

Located near Borough Hall, the Memorial Gazebo was dedicated in 2004. Surrounded by beautiful garden beds that the club helps to maintain, many town festivities are held here. The garden is updated with plants in the spring, summer and fall: in the winter, we add greenery and lights for the Christmas Tree Lighting in December. Contact: Barbara Cook and Joanne Smith. Members participating: 6 7

Patriot’s Isle – Shrewsbury

Garden Club members design and plant the urns for Patriot’s Isle, which is the focal point of Historic Four Corners (intersection of Broad St and Sycamore Ave). Contact: Jill DeFelice. Members participating: 2

Graham Park – Shrewsbury

Club members have planted perennials and bulbs around the flag pole at Robert Graham Athletic Park (aka: Sickle’s Park) to add lasting beauty. Weeding and deadheading will be done throughout the year. Contact: Nadia Nigro. Members participating: 2

Heritage Rose District - Shrewsbury

Stephen Scanniello, president of the Heritage Rose Foundation and curator of NYBG Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden has worked with our club to plant heritage roses at the Christ Church “Remembrance Garden.” Up to date we have a total of seven (7) roses, and have added spring daffodils, herbs, irises. A dedication of the garden is being planned. Contact: Nancy Stewart. Members participating: 6

Monmouth County Library - Shrewsbury

Our club has placed planters at the entrance to the library with seasonal material to compliment the recent planting (in an island garden) by Shrewsbury master gardeners. Spring was a sea of lemon yellow daffodils; summer displayed silver grasses, white geraniums and Bougainvillea. In fall, bronze grasses, kale and chrysanthemums were planted; while in winter, it was all about the greens. Idea: garden with native plants (herbs, milkweed) to attract pollinators. Contact: Susan Berdahl. Members participating: 6

Community Garden – Shrewsbury

An educational plot for youth is being developed with details to follow. Contact: Maureen Collins. Members participating: 12 8

Floral Design & Horticulture To advance the study of the fine arts of floral design, horticulture and gardening, we provide speakers on pertinent topics, take floral design classes, participate in local flower shows, attend GCNJ conferences, classes and symposiums, as well as scheduled field trips. Contact: Nancy Schmaltz and Renee Waite. Members participating: 26

New Projects 2015-2016 Scholarship

A committee will be formed to develop guidelines for awarding an annual scholarship to a deserving student from Shrewsbury (graduating from high school or enrolled in a horticultural program).

Shrewsbury Garden Club 60th Anniversary

As we celebrate our 60th year, we are organizing an art contest with school. “A Floral Odyssey of Shrewsbury” will depict the children’s favorite floral or gardening spot in town. The students will create artwork and we will hold an art contest (details to follow). We want to archive our records and write the club’s history, decade by decade from 1956 to 2016.

Garden at School

Several ideas are being considered for the coming year, to involve our young people: Garden plot - Shrewsbury Borough School (SBS) Garden bed - Red Bank Regional (RBR) HS Donations for all SGC garden projects include the following: potting soil, planters, plant material (including all plants, trees and shrubs), compost, mulch and landscape/planting design. 9

Shrewsbury Garden Club Note from our President: Take time to slow down and grow! Always share with others what is in your garden, plants, flowers and places that inspire. Join us on a journey this year from garden walks, art contests with our children, to a taste of Jersey fresh with local author, Rachel Weston. We’ll have floral design classes for enthusiasts and novices alike, to share our passion for flowers and knowledge of design in the fall and spring. Please consider attending one of the GCNJ sponsored schools at Holly House to further your knowledge in any of these fields of study: Environmental Studies School, Gardening Study School, Flower Show School, Landscape Design School. Herb of the Year The International Herb Association has selected savory as Herb of the Year for 2015. Both varieties, winter and summer savory, have a strong but delicious flavor. The early colonists brought winter and summer savory with them, using the dried winter savory as a tea for digestive upsets and other medicinal purposes. Summer savory was/is used mostly for cooking (used in slow simmered Navy beans or baked beans earned it the title “bean herb”). Savory is a member of the mint family with erect stems and narrow leaves about an inch long. It tastes a bit like thyme, but easier to use and dry. It is one of the herbes de Provence, with a strong culinary scent. Summer savory is an annual herb, has tender leaves and a more delicate flavor. The green to gray-green leaves are slightly fuzzy (purple cast in autumn) and grows about 18inches tall and is covered with pale pink blooms. Winter savory is a perennial herb with firmer leaves, growing to 12 to 15-inches in height with a lovely bush shape. Flowers can be white to pale lavender blue with darker purple spots. The leaves are darker green than summer savory. HERBES DE PROVENCE BLEND:
