This year ACUA will be celebrating its 30th Annual Earth Day Festival on Sunday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 6700 Delilah Road in Egg Harbor Township. ACUA’s Earth Day is held rain or shine, and packs a full slate of free, fun, educational activities for kids and families. Over 150 vendors, crafters, food trucks and educational exhibitors will be participating.

“Looking back, it’s pretty amazing to see how the ACUA has grown over the past 30 years. We’ve been able to expand our services and reduce our carbon footprint with renewable energy, alternative fuel vehicles and many other green initiatives. Earth Day gives us a chance to share what we’re doing with the public and to welcome people to see how waste is handled in Atlantic County. It also gives us an opportunity to recognize many of the great local environmental and nonprofit organizations that work to help our region. Earth Day at ACUA has grown to be the area’s largest Earth Day celebration thanks to all of the incredible sponsors and volunteers who make this event possible,” notes ACUA president Rick Dovey.

Free Workshops

Free workshops will be offered every hour from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the ACUA’s amphitheater. Learn how to maximize limited space with container gardening, get smart, green cooking tips from “Ellie’s Thrifty Kitchen,” or learn how to attract and support endangered Monarch butterflies. There will also be a workshop at the Recycling Center on how to build a rain barrel, a Native Plant Walk at 12 noon and composting demonstrations in the Community Garden all day.

Seedlings

The ACUA will be giving out free seedlings and free seed packets while supplies last!

Wind, Solar and Wastewater Facility Tours

This is the 15th year ACUA will be offering free shuttles to visit New Jersey’s first commercial wind farm. Shuttles travel to the wind farm from the Environmental Park in Egg Harbor Township from 10 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. Get a close look at these five elegant turbines and learn how ACUA’s Wastewater Treatment Facility uses wind and solar power to clean millions of gallons of water every day.

Recycling Center Tours

What’s happening with recycling? Global changes in markets have impacted many recycling programs, but recycling remains an important way to help the environment. Come see how mixed recycling collected from Atlantic County homes, businesses and schools

is processed into commodities for market by an amazing system of conveyors, magnets, eddy currents, and optical sorting complemented by skilled manual sorting for quality control.

Exhibitors

Earth Day at ACUA brings a wide variety of environmental exhibitors and community groups to connect with and to learn from. Some exhibitors include; the Great Egg Harbor Watershed Association, the Unexpected Wildlife Refuge, Atlantic County Parks, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, the Wetlands Institute, animal activist groups, local green teams and many family service organizations.

EcoHayrides

EcoHayrides are a perennial favorite and one of the few chances you’ll have to take a hayride to the top of a landfill! From the top you can see sweeping views of the area including Atlantic City and the Jersey Atlantic Wind Farm.

Crafters/Vendors

A variety of items will be for sale during the festival including handmade jewelry, bath and body care products, veggie seedlings and native plants, handmade glass, local honey, health and wellness products, upcycled creations and one of a kind artwork.
