A Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine shot is administered to a medical worker at the Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria on Thursday.

“Staffing is our most precious resource… We’re adequately staffed today, but I would say that’s why making sure that people in our community protect themselves is absolutely critical so that we make sure this precious resource of ours, that we have sufficient numbers to take care of patients,” Mr. Werft said. Cottage Hospital has four freezers at negative 70 degrees with “more than adequate” freezer capacity for all the shipments. Staff members cheered for one another and even broke into small, celebratory dances. “It’s a big sense of relief to have the vaccine on site,” Chief Medical Officer Dr. Scott Robertson said. “It’s the light at the end of the tunnel, but we’ve still got a long path ahead of us.” Even once someone’s received both doses of the vaccine, it’s important to still follow all the precautions, he said. He doesn’t anticipate policies changing until the infection rate is low. “Despite this glimmer of good news, the overall situation is still fairly dire,” Dr. Ritter said. “And it’s up to everybody out there to do their part to bring this under control.” Santa Maria has reported 77

Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria administered its first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Pfizer and BioNTech to frontline workers Thursday. Hundreds of Dignity Health Central Coast employees will receive a vaccine from the initial shipment of 1,900 doses. Staff members will have to get a second dose for the vaccine to be effective. Marian Regional Medical Center is not requiring staff to get vaccinated, but 98% of its employees answered in a survey that they intend to receive the vaccine. Dr. Trees Ritter, an infectious disease specialist at Dignity Health Central Coast, was first in line. “Physically, I didn’t even feel it. Emotionally, it felt amazing to

COVID-19 deaths and 5,441 cases, 341 of which are still infectious. “It’s certainly helpful at any time to get the vaccine, but we’re hopeful it can help lower the rate of infection. And we’re hopeful that this will be the last surge,” Dr. Robertson said. Dr. Ritter, despite working in a hospital, was more worried about catching COVID-19 at home from his teenage daughters. There has not been any COVID-19 transmission within the hospital. “When people get infected, it’s usually when they let their guards down, and when they’re with their close friends,” he said. Marian Regional Medical Center will be continuing its precautions, including 14day quarantines, despite staff members receiving the vaccine. From Lane Farms

Christmas trees, wreaths and other fresh greenery make wonderful gifts. Poinsettias can brighten up neighbors’ porches as socially distant, drop-off gifts. Lane Farms has a variety of festive foliage to peruse in its “Christmas Patch. Bags of popcorns and other Lane Farms snacks make good stocking stuffers for young and old. (Maybe Santa will trade in his cookies for kettle corn.) The Lane family has been farming in the Santa Barbara area since 1868, and a Lane Farms tree is part of many locals’ traditions. The Christmas Patch is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 308 S Walnut Lane, Santa Barbara. The produce stand can be reached at 805964-3773, or visit lanefarmssb.com.

ARIES — It’s important to take a hard look at yourself and know where you’re going, Aries. A little self-analysis never hurt anyone, especially when you feel like you aren’t getting anywhere. But you tend to go a little overboard with self-criticism. Take today to try and ignore that little voice in your head, or even prove it wrong! TAURUS — Taurus, you tend to run away from confrontation, but today you might not be able to avoid it. Your partner or a family member may be putting pressure on you. It’s possible you’ve already worked out a solution to this problem. Tell your partner what he or she wants to hear so you can do what you want later. GEMINI — -You may feel a little weary today, Gemini. It’s a good time to take stock of your life. You may have gotten some news about someone that has caused you some pain. This is a good time to rely on the support of your relationship in order to reenergize yourself. Take the time to let others take care of you. CANCER — You have the gift of being able to get your great ideas across to others. In your family, you may be the one who teaches your children about life and its responsibilities. Today someone might teach you something you didn’t know. You should never forget that education means communication, and communication is the exchange of ideas. LEO — There may be tension in the air as you go about your day, Leo. The leftover fatigue from the past few days is starting to wear on you. You may have managed to get into an argument with someone close to you, but there might be a reason for this. Take advantage of the situation to clear the air with your friend. VIRGO — You don’t live your life by society’s rules, Virgo. Your freedom is what is most important to you. But despite your independence, there are days when you have the sudden, sinking feeling that you could wind up alone in this world. Today you should really begin to think about what the word “commitment means to you. Is it +*#!2 +1$)"$ really so scary? LIBRA — Libra, life around

you today almost seems like a (bad) dream. It’s almost as if people are talking, but nothing intelligible is coming out of their mouths. Perhaps two people close to you are having problems getting along. You feel like stepping in and telling them to calm down and really listen to each other. Days like these are when people need you the most. SCORPIO — You can’t spend all your time running from one activity to the next, Scorpio. You need to take a break from time to time. You have all the energy you need, but you should think about relaxing yourself as a whole. Your body may need its batteries recharged. Pretty soon you will be in the thick of the action and you will need all the energy you can get. SAGITTARIUS — Today’s planetary configuration has you wondering about an aspect of your life that causes you a good deal of hardship, Sagittarius. Maybe your partner is often away, and this is particularly hard on you. You’d like your sweetie to be there through thick and thin. This may be causing some tension in your relationship. Have you talked to your partner about your feelings? If not, you really should. CAPRICORN — Capricorn, you may have been a little difficult to be around lately. You like to treat yourself to a little moodiness from time to time, but the people around you might appreciate a little cooperation. There are days when you don’t want to grow up, when it’s time to play. Do you get enough time to play? Think about it. AQUARIUS — One thing is for sure, Aquarius, you’d rather be in bed with a good book than out in the stressful world. But you may be feeling like you’re missing out on some of the good things in life. How much time do you spend with other people? Why not try to find someone who shares your taste for good books and bed? Think about it! PISCES — Your greatest quality is generosity, Pisces. Your nature isn’t to give to others in order to get something back but for the pleasure of giving. This is how you get power and light. Think of all the people in the world who give of themselves without expecting anything in return. You don’t have to make much effort to be one of those people - just give it a try.

Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call In Source Logic at 702-659-7766 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Web site address listed below for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA08000537-19-1. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Notice to Tenant NOTICE TO TENANT FOR FORECLOSURES AFTER JANUARY 1, 2021 You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer, you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. At left, Megan Anderson, a junior from San Jose State, was just 14 three-pointers short of the Spartans’ career record when she transferred to UCSB this year. At right, Taylor Mole, a 6-foot-2 transfer from Colorado State, will be the second-tallest UCSB women’s basketball player when she becomes eligible for this year’s Big West Conference season.

NCAA grants immediate eligibility to two UCSB women’s basketball transfers By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER

UCSB’s short-handed women’s basketball team got a helping hand from the NCAA’s Division 1 Council on Wednesday. The Gauchos, who have had only eight players available so far this season, will soon add two accomplished shooters — juniors Megan Anderson and Taylor Mole — thanks to the council’s vote which grants immediate eligibility to all qualifying transfers. They normally would sit out one season as a redshirt. UCSB’s entire team broke out in cheers when coach Bonnie Henrickson broke the news during Wednesday’s practice at the Thunderdome. “It was a day of relief and excitement and joy for so many athletes, and of course for our two,” she said. “They hung in there and have worked their butts off to get better and get comfortable with how we try to play. “They have great attitudes, are quality young people and good students. Even though they haven’t played yet, they’ve been tremendous additions.” Neither player will be available when UCSB (0-2) plays host to Santa Clara (1-2) for consecutive, 5 p.m. games tonight and Saturday. The two transfers — Anderson from San Jose State and Mole from Colorado State — must

first receive certification of their academic units and progress toward graduation, Henrickson said. She’s hoping they can suit up for either the Gauchos’ Big West Conference home openers against UC Irvine on Dec. 27 and 28, or their Jan. 1 and 2 games at Cal State Fullerton. Anderson, a 6-foot wing player, set a single-season record at San Jose State when she made 43.8% of her three-pointers (46-for105) during her freshman year. Her career mark of 40.3% is also the school record. She ranks second in career threes with 185 and would have easily broken the school record of 199 had she stayed at San Jose. Mole, a 6-2 wing player from Australia, shot 34.8% from three last season while playing in 27 of Colorado State’s 30 games. She scored her season-high of 12 points against Incarnate Word. “They both can really shoot it,” Henrickson said. “They’re also both starting to put the ball on the floor when they’re run off the line — they’re not just sitting out there, but also getting to the rim. Their shot selection is good and they’re both unselfish players.” They were used on the scout teams to prepare the Gauchos for their games against UCLA and Cal Baptist, Henrickson said, but also have been integrated into the player rotation during workouts.

“The others are learning how to play with them and how to use them, especially since they both shoot it so well,” she said. They will add needed length to a team in which all but one player — 6-4 senior Natalia Bruening — are under 6-feet in height. AllAmerican Ila Lane, a 6-4 center who led the nation in rebounding last year, is among three Gauchos who have opted out of this season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Taylor is really long and Megan is long and athletic,” Henrickson said. “Megan has done a great job on the glass in practice and Taylor has blocked a lot of shots. She gets a lot of deflections. “We could see right when they started working out with us that they’d be able to step in and make contributions on both ends of the floor.” UCSB will face a challenge from a physical Santa Clara team which averages 11.3 offensive rebounds per game. Ashlyn Herlihy, a 6-1 senior from Arroyo Grande, leads the Broncos with averages of 11.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. She starts up front with 6-1 senior Merle Wiehl of Germany. “Both of their posts are physical while ours are more like stretchfours,” Henrickson said. “They’ve got more depth at the four and the five than we do, too.” Santa Clara’s road games have all been on the road against Big

West competition — a 59-49 win at Cal State Bakersfield, and losses of 57-56 and 70-59 at Cal Poly. The Gauchos have been led by a pair of senior guards. Danae Miller, a two-time All-Big West selection, is averaging 18.0 points and 3.5 assists while shooting 35% from the three-point line. Doris Jones, a transfer from Diablo Valley Community College, is at 17.0 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 46.2% from three. “We had Doris in practice with us last year, and she’s really improved since then,” Henrickson said. “She understands what we’re trying to do, get into motion and move the ball. “She and Danae are both playmakers who are capable three-point shooters. That makes them harder to guard because you have to make a hard close-out on them.” Westmont College will also play host to basketball games this weekend. Its women’s team will face San Diego Christian today at 3 p.m. The Westmont men, who travel to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, will return home to play Pacific on Sunday. Both games will also start at 3 p.m. Spectators are not allowed at any college basketball contests. The UCSB men’s team will travel to Pepperdine on Saturday for another 3 p.m. tipoff. email: mpatton@newspress.com

Continued from Page A1 first. The Moderna-manufactured vaccine, which was cleared by a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel Thursday, has 28 days between doses. Dr. Robertson anticipates receiving the Moderna vaccine by the end of next week. “If those on the front lines are willing to receive it, hopefully the public will too,” Dr. Robertson said. The vaccine was also received at Lompoc Valley Medical Center on Thursday afternoon, and employees were vaccinated based on risk-stratification published by the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department. Vaccinations will occur for approximately five days, or until LVMC’s allocation is finished,

Dr. Anosrg said the arrival of the vaccine “could not come at a more critical time for our county,” as COVID-19 cases have surged in recent days. “We have been working for months to prepare for a local distribution plan and will begin with those with the highest risk of becoming infected and spreading COVID-19,” he said. As more supply becomes available, the county will progress in the phased distribution of the most powerful tool we have against COVID-19, increasing the opportunity for more people in our community to get vaccinated. The general public will have a chance to be vaccinated as soon as this spring. email: ahanshaw@newspress.com News-Press Associate Editor Mitchell White contributed to this report.

“I hope people are encouraged to get the vaccine,” Dr. Pierce said. LVMC is not currently offering vaccines to the general public. The vaccine is not mandatory for LVMC staff. “We have spoken of the light at the end of this tunnel and it has finally arrived in Santa Barbara County,” Dr. Henning Ansorg, health officer for the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, said in a news release. “This vaccine is our most important tool for ending the COVID-19 pandemic in our county. While the light at the end of the tunnel has arrived, we are very much still in the tunnel, as we’ve heard State officials share. “We need every community member to continue wearing a mask, staying home as much as possible, and for those that have tested positive, please isolate immediately.”

said Chief Operations Officer Dr. Naishadh Buch. Among the staff receiving the vaccine on Thursday were physicians, nursing staff and environmental services workers. “People should absolutely take this vaccine,” said Dr. William Pierce, LVMC Chief of Medical Staff and general surgeon. “There will be side effects. The greater good is served if as many people as possible get this vaccine. I wanted to be right up there. It helps me feel very safe working in a hospital with COVID patients.” Dr. Pierce said the shot was not painful. His vaccine was administered by Cardiologist Dr. Khawar Gul. Other nursing and medical staff helped administer the vaccines, which were managed and prepared by the LVMC Pharmacy department under the guidance of Director of Pharmacy Services Sarah Osellame.
