Engineers make face shields Machine shop melts plastic to help hospitals By ANNELISE HANSHAW NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
Face shields may seem like a one-time purchase. But for hospital staff, they replace it every day — or at least they’re supposed to. Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital couldn’t get as many shields as it needed, so staff members started disinfecting and reusing them. When Ray Karam, CEO of High Temperature Superconductors, heard about the hospital’s need, he reopened his machine shop to make the needed supplies. “If you can do something, then you should do it,” he said in a news release. “ It’s hard to just sit there and watch the world get sick from this virus and do nothing.”
For weeks, Mr. Karam struggled to find the materials he needed. He recruited a team to manufacture the gear, and the four-man assembly line churns out 100 shields per day. He hopes to produce 1,000 per day when he gets his machines rolling. Cottage is already using the shields produced by Mr. Karam and his team. It expects to use at least 5,000 under COVID-19 precautions. “It feels really good that they are using them and that we contributed,” Mr. Karam said. If your health care workers need face shields, contact Larry Good at larry.g@ hitsuperconductors.com. email: ahanshaw@newspress.com

Visitors swarmed State Street patios as they escaped their home cities for a laidback Santa Barbara trip. Lines much too long to maintain social-distancing guidelines formed outside of juice shops. Anything to try and beat the heat. A group of three teens from Thousand Oaks rested on their skateboards in the shade. They went swimming at the beach, but because of a county health order, they couldn’t just sit back on the beach. They tried to have fun even during the COVID-19 crisis. They’re seniors in high school, afterall. But they wear their masks everywhere and try to stay six feet away from others. It’s just hard, Cooper Clemons says as he motions to the tightly packed juice line. They usually go to Malibu to enjoy the beach and skate around, but law enforcement is really strict
enforcing health orders there lately. Mr. Clemons says he’s seen people get tickets in Malibu, but he hasn’t noticed it here. “Malibu is just not as chill,” he said. So the three carpooled to Santa Barbara for a short trip. It’s a cool spot for skateboarding and has more public beaches than Malibu.” Another young group of three drove from Los Angeles to enjoy lunch and shop State Street. It’s about seven degrees cooler here, and it seemed fun for a long weekend. Alyssa and Rich Maltz drove from Oakland to Solvang, a trip they had been talking about taking for a while. They love traveling and usually head to the East Coast to see family. Since COVID-19, they stay in California and take day trips. Yesterday morning, they hiked through Inspiration Point. But they headed back early because it was too hot. They went to State Street to Please see STATE ST. on A2

The Goleta City Council will hold a special meeting Wednesday to conduct interviews for the city’s Design Review Board. The board includes seven members, including four who are required to be Goleta residents. At least two members must be licensed architects, and at least two must be licensed landscape professionals. Three at-large members must reside in the city of Goleta, according to a staff report. Four members would constitute a quorum, which must contain at least one licensed architect and one landscape professional or two licensed architects. A quorum must also contain at least two Goleta residents, according to officials. There could be as many as five members appointed to the board. Two terms have experienced on the board, Karis Clinton and Craig Shallanberger. In July, atlarge member Jennifer Fullerton was appointed to the city’s
Planning Commission, creating an additional vacancy. There is also an opportunity for the city council to appoint a new licensed landscape professional and an additional at-large member, according to the staff report. Goleta city staff has received applications from Gregg Hart and Jonathan Eymann for the at-large position. Martha Degasis has applied for the licensed landscape professional vacancy, while Ms. Clinton and Mr. Shallanberger elected to resubmit their applications for the licensed landscape professional and licensed architect positions, respectively. Ratification of the appointments will be presented to the council on Sept. 15. Council may direct staff to reopen the recruitment and advertise for additional candidates, according to the staff report. Wednesday’s meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. It will be broadcast live on channel 19, as well as at https://tinyurl.com/ GoletaMeetings. email: mwhite@newspress.com

Local nonprofit teams with Lady Gaga to promote kindness By MARILYN MCMAHON NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
What could Lady Gaga, the flamboyant singer-songwriter, and the Community Environmental Council in Santa Barbara possibly have in common? Good question. The unlikely collaboration of the CEC and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation is sponsoring the annual #BeKind21 Campaign through Sept. 21. The campaign, which began Sept. 1, invites schools and colleges, corporate partners, nonprofit partners and all other

participants to integrate kindness into their lives. In 2019, the campaign, with support from more than 130 partners, drew 1.6 million
participants from around the world and generated more than 41 million acts of kindness. “The CEC’s mission is about being kinder to the Earth, and
we recognize that being kind to each other — actively taking care of, listening to, and supporting the needs of everyone in our community — builds the resilience

we must have to collectively care for our planet,” said Kathi King, CEC’s director of outreach and education. “This mission is more important than ever this year as we face so many challenges. Simple acts of kindness go a long way during a time when we are looking for inspiration and hope.” The unusual partnership with Lady Gaga’s foundation began when CEC met Born this Way staff at the 2019 Pacific Pride Foundation Festival in 2019. Led by Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, a philanthropist, activist and entrepreneur, Born This Way Foundation was founded in 2012 to support the wellness of young people and empower them to create a kinder and braver world. “While our world is different this year, our mission has never been more important,” according to Ms. Germanotta. “Simple acts of kindness will go a long way in a time when so many are searching for connection and hope. Kindness is powerful, and together we can create a movement to build a future that is kinder, braver and more just for all.” CEC is participating in the challenge by providing a list of 21 ways to be kind to the Earth and each other by advocating, changing personal habits and taking part in educational events. Examples include the following: • At home: Purchase food from local and diversified producers as much as possible. • In the community: Encourage local restaurants and grocery stores to sign up with a food rescue organization in their community to donate surplus food. • At home: Reduce the amount of single use and “disposable” plastic in your life wherever possible and reuse whatever you
are able to — most plastic is not recycled. • In the community: Speak out against structural racism and inequities. • In the community: Ask your grocery store if you can bag your own groceries, request that your coffee shop resume allowing reusable cups and urge restaurants to refrain from sending unneeded straws, cutlery, napkins and condiments home with your takeout. The complete list can be found at cecsb.org/bekind21. Community members are encouraged to take pictures when they engage in any of the items on the list and post to social media with tags #bekind21 and #cecsb. Individuals who take the pledge will receive exclusive kindness suggestions, tips and inspiration from Born This Way Foundation’s co-founders and partners and have a chance to be featured on ChannelKindness.org. “As communities across the world face the trauma of a pandemic, the ongoing racial inequalities and a host of global challenges, this year’s campaign has been uniquely designed to be responsive to today’s movements, showcasing that kindness is not an empty gesture; rather kindness is a verb,” Ms. King said. “To be kind is to speak up. To be kind is to prioritize your mental wellness. To be kind is to advocate for a world that values, validates and respects all people.” email: mmcmahon@newspress.com

Scottish chest of drawers has a lot of history
I
have a history with Scotland, having met my son’s father there, so when D.G. sent me an old Scottish chest of drawers, I was thrilled at the prospect of fruitful research. D.G. grew up with that piece in Santa Barbara; it was the Captain’s ask the But GOLD DIGGER Chest. knowing Dr. Elizabeth Stewart that British “Brown furniture was undervalued, D.G. said perhaps the love that his family had lavished on the chest for generations might not be equal to its monetary value. A label inside the chest states “Collection of Sir George Nobel of Newcastle: Scottish carved oak, Period Charles II, date 1655, applied carving stand of later date. My first job was to explain the role of the piece to D.G.’s family. In the late 17th century, even the finest houses held few pieces of furniture. So, this piece, at almost 6 inches tall, with a whopping 24-drawers, would have been a rare and treasured family possession costing a bundle. What was contained in all those drawers? We think of a chest of drawers as holding underwear, T-shirts, socks, but in the 17th century, a tall wood chest on stand held important things in the family: documents, jewelry, silver, lace, small pieces of clothing, such as embroidered collars and cuffs. Each drawer was a treasure trove; notice the many locks. A family who could afford such a piece would have had servants, who liked to “borrow those wonderful objects. Notice that the drawers are of different “courses, which means a series of same-sized drawers on one level of different sizes. This held gradations of what a family held dear. If you think about the name “chest, this name has significance because the chest
This 17th century Scottish chest of drawers would have once held the jewelry, important documents and finery of a wealthy family.

held the heart – the “belongingsâ€? of an upper-class family. We have so many objects today in our homes that it is difficult to imagine that one chest held family treasures for generations. The scarcity of objects in the 17th century led people to put more “storeâ€? into the storage of objects they held dear. Those drawers were used over generations, and thus the pulls (handles) were often replaced. D.G. wrote me “to think that the original pulls, bronze centuries ago, were replaced with wood, gives me chills ‌ to imagine the number of people who have used/ touched/appreciated this piece over the years is amazing.â€? He writes that after learning about the rarity of such a piece – still intact since the 17th century, that D.G.’s children will have to argue over the inheritance of the Brown piece of furniture. I underscore the security systems of such a piece of furniture: Not only were the drawers fitted with escutcheons for locks and keys, but over the entire front of the piece, two double doors enclose the drawers, also with a locking mechanism. Not just a simple lock, but a lock bolstered by hinges that spanned the width of the doors in flanges that served as brackets to join the boards of the doors together. These were strong doors that defended the drawers further. Such furniture was often moved around rooms (today we put a piece of furniture in one place and don’t move it). In the 17th century, a piece might have a seasonal location, or it may have been transported to another home
owned by the family, so pieces like D.G.’s were mounted on stands. These stands were often carved and set on “high legs, which meant that the weight of the case piece would be moved. In American and England, these pieces were called highboys. The function of such pieces mounted on high-legged stands was ease of moving, and it is telling that the French word for furniture is “moblier – movables. For example, if D.G.’s piece, in a certain season, held linens and bedclothes, it may have been moved for accessibility to a dining area to hold silver. This piece has provenance. I found the genealogy of the “Noble family that owned the piece in the 17th century, yet I could not find the image of the “Noble estate in Scotland. I did, however, find an ancestor: in the 19th century, a great inventor. Had he known that his family’s chest had made its way to San Diego and then sold and moved to Santa Barbara, he would have been amazed. This is the story that great pieces can tell us. The value? Because this era of furniture still has collectors, it is in the five figures, even though the market for what we call “Brown (British 17th and 18th centuries) furniture, is decidedly low today. Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great way to test your knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

Bieber strikes out 10 in latest victory By GERRY FALL NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
Former UCSB star pitcher Shane Bieber struck out 10 and allowed one run in five innings to earn his seventh win of the season for the Cleveland Indians on Sunday at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Bieber had shut out the Milwaukee Brewers for the first four innings before the Brewers broke through in the fifth for their only run in the Tribe’s 4-1 victory. Bieber, who threw 103 pitches, allowed the one run on five hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk to improve to 7-0. His earned run average for starting pitchers is an American-League best 1.25. “In the fourth and fifth I just got elongated and I had to work a little bit more than I would have liked, Bieber told reporters after the game. “But that’s what happens when you walk a guy and then give up a couple hits in a row and have to work out of it. Indians acting manager Sandy Alomar Jr. said Milwaukee’s approach the second time through their batting order forced Bieber to throw more pitches, but in the end he was able to make the right adjustment to escape damage. “They were just looking in one area and gave up part of the plate, Alomar said. They were more looking for spin and reacting to fastballs. A couple of the hits they got, they were late on the fastball, but it seemed like they were looking for a spin and reacting. In other Major League Baseball news involving a local player, Santa Barbara native Jeff McNeil belted his first home run of the season for the New York Mets in their 14-1 rout of the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field in New York. McNeil also reached base two other times with a walk and a hit by pitch. He’s hitting .291 for the season. Mets starter Jacob deGrom tossed seven masterful innings to earn his third win. The hard-throwing right-hander allowed one run on three hits with 12 strikeouts and two walks in lowering his earned run average to 1.69. Closer to home, the Angels completed a fourgame sweep of the Houston Astros with a 9-5 victory on Sunday. Anthony Rendon homered in the third inning and Jared Walsh and Justin Upton contributed key run-scoring hits in the eighth, when Los Angeles scored four times to break a 5-5 tie. The Dodgers hosted the Colorado Rockies at 7 p.m. on Sunday. A final score was unavailable at press time.

Former Norfolk State star Barry Mitchell found a home when he came to Belgium to play basketball, but his youngest son will head back across the Atlantic to pursue his own hoop dreams at UCSB. Ajay Mitchell, an 18-year-old who’s playing as an amateur in Belgium’s top professional divisions, announced his commitment this week to play for the Gauchos next year. “I’m very grateful to become part of their organization,” said Mitchell, a 6-foot-3 point guard. “I really liked the coaching staff — I knew they really wanted me to go there — and I think it’ll be a great place to live and to work hard. “Their physical trainers are great, their coaches are great, and they really believe in me. I think it was my best option.” NCAA rules prevent UCSB head coach Joe Pasternack from commenting about Mitchell until he signs his national letter of intent on Nov. 11. Associate head coach John Rillie watched Mitchell play for Belgium’s U18 team during last year’s European Championships in Oradea, Romania. He averaged 11.5 points in eight games while shooting just under 40 percent from the three-point line. He also handed out 3.6 assists. His stock continued to rise last July when he averaged 9.5 points while shooting 64.3% for the World Select Red team at the NBA Academy Games in Atlanta. The “ThisisBasketball” recruiting web site reported that Mitchell had “started raising some eyebrows with his clearly visible potential and several clubs from Belgium and beyond were trying to entice the lanky point guard to join their program.” Mitchell soon became the youngest player on Nanterre’s roster in the elite French Espoirs division. He’s now playing for Limburg United in Belgium’s top pro league.

“I’d say the best part of my game is probably my court vision and basketball IQ,” he said when asked about his basketball attributes. His father, who won MVP honors in both the World Basketball League and the Continental Basketball Association, headed to Belgium to play for Sunair Oostende in 1994. He led that team to a Belgian League championship and a pair of Belgium Cup titles. He also played for Siemens Gent before signing with Liége for the 2001-02 season — the Year Ajay was born. He later returned to the court at age 48 to play for BC Alleur in Belgium’s lower division during the 2013-14 season. “He’s always helped me get better but he’s left all the basketball decisions to me,” Ajay said. “He never forced me to play. He just wanted me to live my best life and enjoy whatever I decided to do.” He said both his father and mother, Fabienne, were thrilled with his choice of college. “The first school for them was always Santa Barbara,” he said. “My sister Alexis was really happy, too, because she wants to come visit. “Both of my sisters played volleyball in college and they told me that the university experience was really great.” Alexis Mitchell earned All-Big Ten honors as a middle blocker for the University of Wisconsin while sister Ashley played for Northwest Missouri State. Ajay also has an older brother, Barry. He said the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented him from visiting UCSB’s campus. “Once things open up, we’ll get there for sure,” he said. “But I’ve talked a lot on the phone with the coaches, and I’ve talked to a couple of the players, too.” He said his goal in basketball was to “get to the highest level possible — to the NBA, if I can.” “But I want to first get my diploma,” Mitchell added, “and keep working hard to reach my goals.”
