Fire & Fury on the frontlines UCSB decathlon champ Derek Masterson faces new challenges with County Fire

SB Unified meets Tuesday, other county schools open By ANNELISE HANSHAW NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

Derek Masterson wasn’t as hot on becoming a fireman as the other boys in Placerville. Sometimes he’d picture himself as an architect, and other times as a mechanical engineer. “Or maybe as a championship motorcycle rider,” said Masterson, whose appetite for all things physical led him to a record-setting career in the decathlon for the UCSB track and field team. But firefighter? The one he knew from his old neighborhood breathed fire every time he saw young Derek. “I really didn’t get along with him when I was growing up,” Masterson said. “He’d seen a lot in his life and he didn’t like me riding my dirt bike around his property. We had a couple of stern talking-to’s. “I guess you could say he educated me.” So did UCSB … and then so did the Fire Academy at Hancock College. “I wound up falling into firefighting,” he said with a laugh, “just like I kind of fell into the decathlon.” And now Masterson, who led the Gauchos to their only Big West Conference track and field championship in 2012, is on the frontlines battling the blitzkrieg of wildfires that have ravaged the West Coast this summer. “It’s been my busiest season, by far,” said Masterson, who is in his third summer with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. “We were in Lompoc a few days ago, and up at the Mineral Fire before that. “We’ve been on the Carmel Fire and

we put another crew on the Creek Fire. When we get a resource order, we go where we’re needed.” He tried three majors at UCSB — physics, biology, and mechanical engineering — before graduating in 2013 with a degree in environmental science. He also scoped out several career paths. He was a decathlete in all phases of life. “I run a chainsaw crew now,” Masterson said. “My job is to go cut stuff down and build fuel breaks. Technically, my job title is fire control worker-slash-extra help. “You’re kind of a jack of all trades and master of none.” He is the decathlete of the fire department. Cody Fleming, UCSB’s head coach for track and field, wasn’t as surprised by his career choice as a young Masterson might have been. “He was pulled in by the challenge of the decathlon — it was the perfect way for him to test himself as an athlete — and that’s what he’s doing now as a wildland firefighter,” Fleming said. “This is probably far more grueling, but that’s also what draws him in. “I thought it was a perfect fit for Derek.” Masterson’s grit while pole vaulting on one leg at the 2012 Big West Championships is the stuff of legends around UCSB’s Pauley Track. “He’d won the decathlon the previous week, but we also really needed him to place in the long jump, the javelin and the pole vault to finish ahead of Long Beach State — and he did in all three,” Fleming recalled. “He was pushing full steam ahead in one of his last vaults but his hamstring didn’t agree and he went down.”

Masterson persevered to clear 15 feet, 5 inches and earn critical points for the Gauchos. “It was enough to help us win,” Fleming said. “His teammates recognized him as their captain and he carried it home for everyone.” Masterson overcame even more aches and pains to repeat as the Big West decathlon champion in 2013. “The decathlon is an injury waiting to happen, but he pieced it together and had a very good javelin throw,” Fleming said. “He won the conference title by having to battle through every event. “It’s funny, but when I look back at Derek’s career, his most impressive moments came when his body was hanging by a thread.” Those injuries did hinder him from making the 2013 NCAA Championships. He missed qualifying by just 30 points. His UCSB’s coaches felt so badly that they gave him one last fling as a Gaucho when his body finally healed, entering him in that summer’s Texas Greatest Athlete Meet. “Derek bled and sweat for this program for five years and put his personal score aside to help his team,” Fleming said at the time. “Pete (Dolan, UCSB’s former head coach) and I both agreed that now that he was healthy and ready to roll, we would give him another go at it.” Masterson wound up scoring 7,613 points in Dallas to set the modernday Gaucho record for the decathlon. (UCSB also recognizes the mark of 7,660 that Tom Harris set in 1980 with scoring tables that were changed in 1985). “It got a little dicey when Derek fouled on his first two long jumps, but

The Santa Barbara Unified School District’s meeting Tuesday should address concerns regarding its latest reopening policy. On Sept. 14, the district announced it would not apply for a reopening waiver but would welcome small cohorts into schools. Groups must be 14 or fewer students per classroom, and the district will be catering the groups to the community’s needs, Superintendent Hilda Maldonado said in a News-Press interview. Students invited to small cohorts are those identified to need extra help, like high school seniors behind on credits or special education students. Football, cross country, volleyball, water polo and sideline cheer practices begin today. Athletes must stay six-feet apart and bring their own equipment. The district will also address its solar-energy project Tuesday. It plans to discuss contracting ENGIE Services, a sustainable energy company that’s worked in private and public sectors. ENGIE has provided services to local school districts, like South San Francisco Unified, and businesses like Walmart. The project would allow the district to power all school buildings through stored energy, in case of a power outage. Following a 5 1/2-hour meeting on Sept. 8, the board released a new policy on public comments. The period for public comments is limited to 20 minutes per agenda item, and controversial issues will be discussed in separate board meetings. COVID-19 updates will be given at 7 p.m. each meeting. In other school- district news, the California Department of Public Health approved waivers Friday from the Dunn School in Los Olivos, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and the Notre Dame School in Santa Barbara. Cold Springs School in Montecito opens Tuesday. St. Raphael School in Santa Barbara and St. Mary of the Assumption School in Santa Maria open Wednesday. Providence School will open to kindergarten today and will welcome one additional grade each day starting Wednesday. Sept. 30 will be the first day with K-6 in the building. email: ahanshaw@newspress.com

then he came through and cut loose with a real nice 22-footer,” Fleming recalled. Masterson continued training with the Santa Barbara Track Club and former Gaucho coach Josh Priester. His ninth-place finish at the 2014 USA Track & Field Championships in Sacramento punched his ticket to Canada in 2015 to compete with the U.S. National Team. “That was the pinnacle, competing at the Pan Am Games in Toronto,” Masterson said. “That was amazing, strapping up to represent the U.S.” He came back down from that sporting high in 2016. “I missed going to the Olympic Trials by two spots,” Masterson recalled. There’s not an order against hiking trails, said Andew Madsen, U.S. Forest Service spokesman. “We just want to make sure if people go out they’re safely spaced between one another. If you get to a trailhead and there’s just too many cars there, you should find a different area to go to as opposed to trying to get in. As state and local responses to the coronavirus pandemic continue to evolve, the Forest Service felt that the situation warranted a two week extension of the closures, said Mr. Madsen. “At the end of that they’ll evaluate and see where we’re at and whether or not we’re going to continue as we need it, said Mr. Madsen. “This order can be rescinded at any time. If local health officials say it looks like the sky has cleared up we can rescind the order tomorrow. For right now, we don’t want to extend it out too far. “We just want to make sure in the next couple of weeks as we monitor what’s going on that we are taking the appropriate steps along with our state and local partners.

Piece of debris becomes children’s tunnel at Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden By MARILYN MCMAHON NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

S

hould anyone doubt the familiar adage that one person’s trash can be another’s treasure, all they have to do is go to the Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden in Buellton and observe children playing happily in a tunnel that looks as if it is carved into a small hillside. It was once a piece of trash found by Gaviota Coast Conservancy volunteers during a beach clean-up day near Driftwoods Cove. According to a recent article in the GCV newsletter, the group “toiled for the good part of a day,” dragging irrigation tubing and other rubbish from the picturesque beach, which is about two miles west of The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara, a hotel in Goleta. Jim and Susan Deacon filled their truck full of trash, and Warren Powers filled his old Chevy van with an 8-by-3½ foot piece of corrugated plastic tube. “I drove to the dump to see if it could be recycled. No dice. The transfer station would not repurpose it,” said Mr. Powers by phone from his home in Buellton. “I knew the landfill was not a good home for plastic,” he told the News-Press. Maybe his wife, Eva Powers, might have a solution. Not only is she a landscape designer and owner of Creative Garden Designs, she is the president of the Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden. “I knew the beach blight could be used for something at the garden, but I wasn’t sure exactly what. A culvert? A play tunnel for the visiting children? Something for the potting shed?” Mrs. Powers told the News-Press. The tube sat behind a tool shed at the botanic garden for six months. “Then I decided it would make a great children’s tunnel and asked Puck Erickson, a landscape architect who lives in Los Olivos if she would design it,” said Mrs. Powers. With a grant of $2,500 from Montecito Bank & Trust, a mason was hired to create a retaining wall with local river rocks around the plastic tube, and it was landscaped with native plants. “Since it was completed in May, the tunnel has been very popular with families and children, especially during the pandemic,” said Mrs. Powers. “The Buellton Department of Parks and Recreation offered an outdoor summer program led by Kyle Abello. Children were encouraged to crawl through the tunnel and then talk about underground critters.” As one of the founders and current president of the botanic garden, Mrs. Powers pointed out that there are other “great projects going on such as the creation of a medicinal plant garden and construction of a Chumash willow and tule hut under the guidance of tribal member Julio Carrillo.” She recalled that the public botanic garden on 2½ acres was started in 2006 by volunteers who had the vision of creating a botanic garden in an area that had been used for dumping soils. “It was an overflow basin for storm drain waters and a CalTrans dump site,” said Mrs. Powers. ”With the support of the city of Buellton, the barren site was graded, and the initial paths were placed. Seventy-three native trees were donated and planted by volunteers.” The garden now houses a propagation area, seating and an amphitheater. There are more than a dozen annual events ranging from Arbor Day celebrations to wreath making. “While the initial focus was on development of an educational resource centered on the area’s native plant community, the garden welcomes early morning walkers, school children, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and community groups who support those on the margins,” said Mrs. Powers. “This led to the garden’s new mission statement to provide a unique, accessible and interactive environment, highlighting plants native to the Santa Ynez River watershed. “The garden will encourage community collaboration, foster new approaches to environmental education and cultivate an appreciation of the natural world.”

Painting represents talent of 1930s artist Grace Howell

M.

M.G. sends me another work from her fabulous art collection, and this one caught my eye because it is signed with a female name: Grace Howell, from the 1930s. During the first two quarters of the 20th century, the California Plein Air School was predominately male, and a career female artist was rather rare, especially one who maintained a studio and sold work for a living. So I endeavored to find out if Grace Howell was a career artist, or if she was the wife of a wealthy man who could afford to support the expensive and time-consuming practice of painting in oil. A female born in the 19th century who would compete in that man’s world was rare. And she clearly relished signing her name so that there was no missing this artist was a SHE. Grace Howell was born in 1877, and her work sells today at auction. It’s very pretty work, and in this case, we see delicate eucalyptus trees to the foreground, a field of grass and live oak to the midground, and distinctive mountains of California in the background. I also look at the quality of the sky in Plein Air: the sky should appear both translucent and misty, which is hard to achieve in a semi-realistic way. Grace Howell captured the California sky well. Mrs. Howell was born in Denver, but is known as a San Diego painter, journeying to nearby deserts and coasts. When researching a painter, I look up the family genealogy to find any clues to an artist’s daily practice of art. When I see a female painter of the early 20th century, I look to see who her husband was (if any) and if she was considered by the family as a painter, which oftentimes is not mentioned in the genealogy. You will note that genealogies usually include the MAN’S business, but not so often the WOMAN’S. So, let us meet her husband, the esteemed Edgar A. Howell, who was born in 1874 on a farm in Colorado. By the time Edgar and Grace emigrated from Colorado to San Diego (she was 51, he was 53), he had run a tight ship as a

businessman and civic leader in Denver. His genealogical details tell us that he was an active Mason, a Rotarian and a leader in the Civic Association. He was also active in his church and politically active in Colorado. Here we see a man who was no Bohemian. Furthermore, he established a thriving business, the first of its kind, in finance, as a rater of businessmen’s retail credit, and for this reason, (because I know men in finance), I would think that he would not have welcomed a renegade painter wife. And indeed, we see Grace Howell’s work as pretty and palatable. How did the couple come to be Californians? Edgar came from a farming family who settled parts of Colorado, and up until he opened his credit business, he worked the family farm in fruit and livestock. That farm was over 80 acres; Grace and Edgar married when he was 24, and his business took off. They moved, after almost 30 years in Colorado, to La Mesa, then a fruit farming area, outside of San Diego in 1927, when Mrs. Howell was 50 and Mr. Howell was 53. We can guess they moved to retire. At this point, Mrs. Howell, a selftaught painter, began to paint her environs and thus is known as a California painter. Edan Hughes, the definitive author of the great

book that is the bible of all early California painting “Artists in California 1786-1940,” said Grace Howell painted at her leisure. We put facts together, looking for the commitment level of a painter: She was married to a wealthy and upright businessperson. They retired to La Mesa, and Grace painted at her leisure. That’s quite a different painter than Marie Dolph, who I covered in this column in late August, who had to make a living painting, as that was what she was good at, and her husband was not much of a farmer. And her family suffered in the Great Depression. Marie Dolph received a fantastic education at the Art Institute of Chicago, while Grace Howell was self-taught. Mrs. Howell was a gentlewoman painter — and not a bad one at that. Someday some art historian will write about the lady-painters of leisure of the first two quarters of the 20th century, and perhaps we will see Grace Howell in that book. The value of this painting at auction would bring no more than $500. Dr. Elizabeth Stewart’s “Ask the Gold Digger” column appears Mondays in the News-Press Life section. Written after her father’s COVID 19 diagnosis, Dr. Stewart’s new book “My Darling Quarantine: Intimate Connections Created in Chao” is a humorous collection of five “what-if” short stories that end in personal triumphs over presentday constrictions. It’s available at Chaucer’s in Santa Barbara.

Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great way to test your knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

Davis’ heroics win it for Lakers

Celebrating Stearns Wharf SANTA BARBARA — Members of the public are invited to celebrate the 148th anniversary of Stearns Wharf during the month of October. Residents are encouraged to support the merchants on the pier in celebration of the anniversary. Built in 1872 by John Peck Stearns, Stearns Wharf is the oldest working wood wharf in California. It was built to facilitate the transfer of cargo and people from ships to shore, according to Neil Bruskin, spokesman for The Stearns Wharf Merchants Association. “Up until the 1870s, Santa Barbara was virtually cut off from the outside world by its natural barriers of the ocean and the mountains. In 1867, John Peck Stearns moved to Santa Barbara and opened a lumberyard at the foot of State Street,” Mr. Bruskin said in a news release. “Mr. Stearns noted that the town needed a long wharf so that Ocean ships could tie up at low tide. In 1872, with the financial backing of Colonel William Welles Hollister, Stearns completed the Wharf and Santa Barbara’s isolation from the outside world was over.” Over the years, the wharf has survived severe storms, tornados, as well as fires, Mr. Bruskin noted. It is 2,300 feet long and has an area of 3.8 acres supported by 2,307 pilings. There are currently 17 businesses on the Wharf including three restaurants, a shellfish market, a bait and tackle shop, tourist oriented shops, a Channels Islands exhibit hall and a marine museum. Patrons are welcome to “share in the magic of Stearns Wharf” and celebrate its rich history throughout next month. For more information, visit www.stearnswharf.org. — Mitchell White

Anthony Davis capped an outstanding performance with a game-winning 3-point shot that gave the Lakers a 105-103 victory over the Denver Nuggets in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals in Orlando, Fla. L.A. took a two games to none lead in the best of seven series when Davis took the final shot of the game — a deep 3-pointer from the left sideline that swished as the final buzzer sounded. Davis finished with a game-high 31 points, which also included a perfect 7-for-7 at the free-throw line. Davis also had nine rebounds. Lakers superstar

LeBron James had 26 points, 11 rebounds and four assists, but he was quiet from the midway point of the second quarter on. James had 20 points at the 7:15 mark of the second quarter, but managed only six the rest of the way. Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. (PDT) in Orlando. email: gfall@newspress.com

as a firefighter tends to be more mentally taxing.” His mother does “get a little worried” about the danger of his profession, Masterson conceded. “The ‘overhead’ at Santa Barbara County Fire is welleducated and top-tier, and they really do keep us in safe places,” he said. “I trust them. We’ve had no close calls. “But I’m sure I give Mom even more gray hairs now than when I was growing up. My dad understands it, though, and kind of likes what I’m doing.” His parents were both track and field stars at Stanford. Brian Masterson’s hammer throw of 229 feet, 6 inches still ranks fourth in the Cardinal record books. Karen Nickerson Masterson, a two-time All-American, is sixth all-time at Stanford with a discus mark of

180-5. “They were two amazing role models for Derek,” Fleming said. “They were both complete, nobody-fat athletes, and I think Derek got his energy system from them.” Masterson’s younger brother, Colin, is now a top hammer thrower at Cal Poly. Derek still feels like part of a team when the bell rings. “There’s that camaraderie of working on a crew of 20 people,” he said. “It helps you handle the hard work part of it. “You don’t look at yourself as a victim. You’re just getting stuff done.” Like launching yourself over a crossbar at 15-feet-5 on a bum leg. email: mpatton@newspress.com

Masterson, who is in his third year as a fire control worker for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, represented the United States at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.

Continued from Page A1 “That hurt. That sucked. But things just have to all line up for you. “You’re going against the cream of the crop and everything has to be right … your genetics, your health, your diet. And you have to be good in 10 different events, you can’t just go and perform at one thing.” Masterson, who had been a pole vaulter and soccer player in high school, was talked into trying the decathlon by former UCSB multi-events coach Keith Baker. “I said, ‘What’s that?’” he recalled. “I’d never done that before. I’d never even heard of it before. “He said it was 10 different events involving seven different disciplines that test your athleticism. I was young and eager, and it sounded fun.” Fleming, Baker’s former teammate at Oregon’s Lane Community College, took over Masterson’s training when he arrived at UCSB during the fall of 2011. “He made my career,” Masterson said. “I don’t think I could’ve done it without him. “I called him the mad scientist because I wouldn’t know what in the heck he was talking about, and then it would all turn out great.” The sport prepared him for his chosen career, although wildland firefighting does present other challenges. “Track and field is an explosive sport, but you have to pace yourself in firefighting,” Masterson said. “Even the mile is just five minutes long. You might have to climb up a steep mountainside carrying a 40to 60-pound pack as well as a chainsaw, trying to stay hydrated when it’s super-hot and dry. “You have to physically prepare, so having been an athlete does play a role. A lot of people don’t know how to hydrate. Both are grueling in their own respects, but the continued onslaught you face
