Teacher’s Fund
“Back-to-School” supplies drive seeks to raise $50,000 to support local educators As teachers and students embark on another semester of online learning, the Teacher’s Fund hopes to raise $50,000 to support area educators with instruction tools and materials during this unprecedented time. This year’s annual Back-to-School Supplies Drive will run for one month, from September 16 to October 16. As with many events these days, the entire fundraiser will be held online. Community members and businesses are invited to donate at TFSuppliesDrive.com. All proceeds will be used to help Santa Barbara kindergarten through 12th grade teachers purchase educational supplies. “The transition to online learning has been challenging for both teachers and students, and our commitment to supporting our local teachers has only intensified during the pandemic,” said Renee Grubb, owner of Village Properties Realtors and founder of the Teacher’s Fund. “After the initial emergency response for food and safety, schools and teachers play a vital role in recovering our economy and providing a safe, healthy, and productive learning environment.” This year’s fundraising goal is $50,000. For every $50 donated toward supplies, donors will receive an entry into a drawing for one of numerous great prizes. Businesses or organizations interested in sponsoring the event can do so starting at $250. The Teacher’s Fund was created in 2002 by the owners of Village Properties as a way for teachers to request much needed supplies for their classrooms. Since then, the Teacher’s Fund has donated over $1.7 million to our local schools. 100 percent of the funds raised go directly to local teachers for their classrooms. Already this year, the Teacher’s Fund has provided emergency COVID-19 grants to teachers forced to adapt quickly to meet the challenge of providing digital school. The Back-to-School Supplies Drive will allow the organization to expand its support so that more teachers can optimize online learning for their students. • To donate to the Teacher’s Fund Supplies Drive, visit TFSuppliesDrive.com between Sept. 16 and Oct. 16. • For more information about Teacher’s Fund visit https://teachersfund.org • For information about Village Properties visit https://www.villagesite.com
Aerators cut water use by mixing in a high volume of air with the water while still providing a steady flow. Photo courtesy Kohler
By Ed Del Grande Question: Dear Ed: My present kitchen faucet has a very strong, dense stream of water that splashes when it hits the sink, dishes, my hands, etc. I’m looking for a new kitchen faucet with a nice soft water flow. Any recommendations? – Travis Answer: With kitchen and bathroom faucets, the first thing you want to do is make sure you follow your local plumbing codes. Many areas require lower flow rates to save water. The good news is you can usually change out just the existing faucet aerator to a water-saving aerator to meet codes. In most cases, these aerators cut water use by mixing in a high volume of air with the water while still providing a steady flow. A quality high-efficiency aerator can also cut down on splashing due to the softer air/water
E6
mix. So if you want to tame the water flow on your existing faucet, try installing a new water-saving aerator. If you’re looking for a brand-new faucet, manufacturers do make high-efficiency kitchen faucets with the water-saving technology built in. Bottom line: You can cut down on splashing and save water at the same time by simply installing high-efficiency aerators and faucets. HOA Homefront Reader Questions
Around Town
Can HOAs Ban Political, Patriotic or Religious Displays? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hi Kelly: We (along with our neighbors) put out candidate and ballot measure signs prior to our elections. We looked into this several years ago and it appears that California law allows all HOA residents to display political signs during elections. However, friends who live in other San Diego County HOAs have told me repeatedly that their HOAs do not allow political signs during elections. Can you provide an update on this? Can HOAs prohibit political signs during an election? Thank you. N.H. Good morning Kelly: Are you allowed to fly a party flag (such as Trump/Pence 2020) if you reside in an HOA? I contacted our HOA management two times and they never returned my call. K.F. Dear N.H. and K.F.: HOA residents have the right under Civil Code Section 4710 to display noncommercial signs, posters, flags, and banners in or on their property (“separate interests”), so long as the signs or posters are not larger than 9 square feet and flags or banners are not larger than 15 square feet. Signs or posters may not be made of lights, building materials, balloons or flowers, or be painted on a surface. In a planned development, the “separate interest” is normally the lot, and so putting a sign or flag on the front yard would be protected. However, in a condominium the front yard probably is an exclusive use common area — not part of the separate interest — so the location is significant. Thanks for your questions, Kelly Dear Kelly: I live in a gated community. I am a veteran and had an American pole flag attached to our unit flying since we
purchased our home. I installed the brackets for the flag with short lead anchors so as not to penetrate the stucco waterproof membrane. I received a violation letter from the board saying I have to remove the flag. From my perspective this doesn’t make sense. Can you give me some advice? Sincerely, V.L. Dear V.L.: Civil Code Section 4705, which became law in 2013, protects the right of homeowners to display the United States flag on a pole, a staff, or in a window. Unlike Civil Code Section 4710, there is no specification of the protected maximum size of the United States flag. The flag may be displayed on or in the separate interest or in the member’s exclusive use common area. If your residence is a condominium, the exterior surface of the building is probably common area. Check your condominium plan to confirm. However, is installing the bracket on the exterior wall an installation “on” the separate interest? It may be. The HOA may ask you to sign an agreement promising to restore the exterior wall if the bracket is ever removed, but hopefully once the HOA realizes the flag itself is protected, the issue will be considered resolved. Thanks for your question, Kelly
[Readers: A new law this year protects religious displays on entry doors or entry door frames. This protection, found in Civil Code Section 4706, has no limit on size or materials, but does allows HOAs to require a member to temporarily remove the item while work is being performed on the door.]

Pretty Fabric Pairings C C C C C C C C When introducing daring patterns and textures in the same look, it can quickly go from maximalist chic to loud mess. The key is adding simple linens and muted, warm neutrals to the mix.
By Katie Laughridge We are back at it with some of our favorite fabric pairings. Textiles are an essential part of any home; without them a room feels lifeless. You can have all the wall coverings and furniture in the world, but without the texture and specific style that comes with fabric, your space will fall flat. Fabric simply provides ambiance and character to your space that cannot be achieved any other way. We New Traditionalists know adding textiles can be done in so many ways, from upholstered furniture pieces and pillows to window treatments, tablecloths and beyond.
This scene is youthful, whimsical with a lot of hot pink.
Wild botanical This lush and bold look is all about balance. When introducing daring patterns and textures in the same look, it can quickly go from maximalist chic to loud mess. The key is adding simple linens and muted, warm neutrals to the mix. If I asked you to try and pick out what you consider to be the boldest fabric in this group, you might have trouble. Is your eye drawn to the busy colors in the green dotted Rain Water Thibaut? Or perhaps your eye is caught by the deep velvet grooves of the zebra-inspired Etosha Velvet before being distracted by the intricate embroidered beauty of our new Amazonia botanical. Yet all these power players work well together, thanks to the balance between color and texture. What could easily be an overwhelming pairing becomes a tranquil jungle of deep greens and warm tan hues that calm your eye despite the breadth of patterns. The grouping can be enhanced further with natural elements such as leafy greenery, amber glass, medium wood shades and rattan or leather accents. Remember, a little goes a long way when adding decorative accents to this powerful punch of textiles. Grandmillenial color pop How I love that grandmillenial is having its own design movement right now. I knew I wanted to create a scene that was youthful, whimsical and hot pink, which is a bit out of my comfort zone. I started off with the spotted energy of funfetti fabric to introduce all the wonderful hues I’d been itching to explore. The best part is for all of its color and wonder, it still has a neutral tan base that keeps the look grounded. There are so many directions to take this look once you get started. I found myself playing in almost two different directions, one being the geometric prints like the pink and orange Adamina Fiesta and Thibaut stripes, the other leaning toward a new take with the Chiang Mai Dragon and Iconic Leopard Pink fabrics. This look takes adventure to the next level, and I can certainly appreciate that it isn’t for everyone. However, each of the vibrant patterns can be used as a statement fabric and tied down with swaths of richly color velvets and simple decor like sisal natural fiber rugs for a room that has all the excitement that grandmillenial design is all about. Teal dreams The third look takes a turn to the serene for a focus on tonality and tint. I used teal tones with varying amounts of gray to create a soft look that uses color as a neutral. How can blue be a neutral? Isn’t that a contradiction? A little! The answer is a single color can be used as a base for a room, especially when the hue is toned down with a true neutral like gray. Think of your favorite pair of blue jeans and how many different colors and materials you can mix into a stunning outfit. The same goes for decorating your space — using this approach can open the door to mixing more patterns than ever, especially in a monochromatic color scheme. In this look alone we have polka dots, plaids, stripes and so much more. Compare this to the similar mix of patterns in our color pop look and see the difference! I love how two-tone fabrics like the large print mint and white pattern or aquamarine Schumacher design can showcase your room. Wouldn’t either make the most gorgeous curtains? This calming and refreshing mix is juvenile enough for a child’s room but can quickly take a sophisticated turn to create the perfect adult oasis. It offers a versatile canvas for furniture — mix this delicate and demure palette with black wood pieces for great contrast, or opt for white or soft, light neutral finishes for a more seamless, low-volume look. The Beauty of Built-ins
1
By Cathy Hobbs
Tribune News Service
2
Built-ins: Love them or hate them? They can either be the first item on the demo list, or the ideal storage and space-saving solution. Space is a challenge for many homeowners, and built-ins can be the ideal solution. Additionally, those who aren’t fans of off-the-shelf solutions may desire built-ins because of the customization and design freedom they can allow both homeowners and designers. Closets Closets are a popular location for built-ins, especially drawers and shelves. Built-ins allow for storage that will not infringe on what is often a limited space. Wall-to-wall closets allow for the most amount of design capability and flexibility. Look to place your built-ins along perimeter walls, and consider a mix of shelves and drawers. Living spaces Living spaces that may or may not include other social areas such as family rooms and dining rooms also serve as great design opportunities for built-ins. For these areas be sure to think function first and define the needs of the space before beginning to construct your built-ins. In
these rooms, built-ins can serve both areas you wish to highlight as well as areas in which you have items you may wish to hide. Furniture This is where personalization really comes in to play. Keep in mind that if you integrate built-in furniture into your home, these pieces may or may not have universal appeal and may make your home less desirable long term. Think and plan well to achieve the most successful outcome. Offices Home offices are often prime targets for built-ins, especially when it comes to cabinetry, shelving and drawers. Looking for a low-cost solution? Kitchen cabinetry is a good choice as an office built-in solution over custom cabinetry. Cathy Hobbs, based in New York City, is an Emmy Award-winning television host and a nationally known interior design and home staging expert with offices in New York City, Boston and Washington, D.C. Truffula Pink gomphrena is even better than we thought By Norman Winter
Tribune News Service Truffula Pink gomphrena has already been hotter than the proverbial $2 pistol, but The Garden Guy is here to tell you it is even better than we thought. It has been the champion of all butterfly plants at my house and if your peak butterfly season is September/October and you find them for sale, BUY THEM! It was just a couple of days ago I was watching swallowtails hitting on a clump of mine and as I was about to photograph two feeding close together two more flew in kind of like a pollinator photo bomb. It was really a magical moment and it is repeating again as I write this. It’s not just swallowtails, but American ladies, silver-spotted skippers, common buckeyes and regular hummingbird visits too. The pollinators alone would make you want to grow it, but shoot, it is beautiful and one of the toughest, most persevering plans you can grow. Believe me when I say when the heat is on, this is a must have plant. It is better than we thought for another reason. I live in zone 8a and not far from the 7b demarcation line. So first know, we are all growing this as an annual, but mine came back this spring. When I told my color design guru son, he said Dad we are into year 3 at a couple of our locations. Do not count on this but should it happen for you, you will be thrilled at the second-year structure and habit. Botanically speaking Truffula Pink is Gomphrena pulchella with DNA from Bolivia but coming to you, courtesy of Proven Winners. Each iridescent hot pink bloom looks as though it is exploding with little rays of yellow. It will reach a little over 2-feet tall with an equal spread in your garden. Truffula Pink has won over a dozen prestigious awards in trials across the country. You will not only delight in its beauty and size but will relish the fact that it too is well-suited to cutting and using in the vase. It can also be used as a dried flower.

Truffula Pink needs full sun and fertile welldrained soil to really perform to its capability. Letting these great plants sit in wet soggy soil will be a crime. You will want to space your plants 20-36 inches apart and apply a good layer of mulch after planting. It is a great plant for mass planting. The Garden Guy has them in containers as the thriller plant and partnered with Whirlwind Blue scaevola, Superbells Double Blue calibrachoa and Goldilocks lysimachia. In the landscape I have it in several combinations, some with Illusion Emerald Lace ornamental sweet potatoes, others with Luscious Royale Cosmo lantana and some with Sunstar pentas. In addition to the Illusion Emerald Lace ornamental sweet potato, know that all other plants with lime green or chartreuse colored foliage seem to light up the Tuffula Pink. ColorBlaze Lime Time coleus, Gold Mound duranta and Rockin Golden Delicious pineapple sage would all be great choices. Throughout my garden Rockin salvias are used as the taller background for all of my plantings. So, whether they are Deep Purple, Blue Suede Shoes or Fuchsia they create a perfect partnership with Truffula Pink. By all means don’t forget about lavenderblue Meteor Showers verbena that also gets about the same height. Whether you buy now in late summer for the late butterfly push, or choose to wait until next spring, The Garden Guy recommends you buy several. Truffula Pink will add that needed sizzle to the landscape and be a wonderful thriller plant in mixed containers.
