Ms. Chermak was arrested by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office in Isla Vista on March 5 on suspicion of burglary (a felony) and possession of stolen property (a misdemeanor).
Coroner’s detectives are investigating this death. Consistent with standard procedures for the sheriff’s office, investigators from the Criminal Investigation Bureau and Administrative Investigation team were called in to investigate the circumstances of this jail death, Ms. Zick said. She said the death does not appear suspicious, but the cause of death is not immediately obvious and will require an autopsy to assist in the determination.Ms.Zicksaid Ms. Chermak’s next-of-kin have been notified.

A few years before his Ukrainian adventure, Mr. Penn met with Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, head of the deadly Sinaloa cartel, at El Chapo’s secret hideout in Mexico to interview him for Rolling Stone magazine.

Steven returned the favor to Mr. Putin on “Good Morning Britain, “ a popular U.K. television broadcast, by hailing the Russian tyrant as “one of the great world leaders” and even went so far as to support his buddy’s bloody military incursions into Ukraine as “very reasonable.”

Seems a stretch for an actor who proclaims himself an ardent Buddhist in addition to having been a super-patriotic law enforcement groupie. Over a decade ago, Mr. Seagal, now 70, was sworn in as a “reserve deputy chief” with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana — that is, until he was forced to resign over an internal affairs investigation that resulted in a $1 million lawsuit filed by his employee, swimsuit model Kayden Nguyen. The suit accused the actor of sex trafficking in addition to groping her.
It is comforting to know that Hollywood has both sides of that conflict covered.

SANTA BARBARA — Ray Timothy Oberholzer, 25, of Santa Barbara, was arrested Friday on suspicion of a felony DUI causing injury.Ataround 1:30 a.m. Friday, the Santa Barbara Police Combined Communications Center received a report of a serious injury traffic collision involving a single vehicle. Initial investigation shows a Ford sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed while exiting the Highway 101 southbound off-ramp at Castillo Street.
Sgt. Ethan Ragsdale, the Santa Barbara Police Department’s public information officer, said Mr. Oberholzer, the sedan’s driver, was attempting to turn left onto northbound Castillo Street and collided with a large retaining wall.Sgt. Ragsdale said Mr. Oberholzer is believed to have allegedly been under the influence of alcohol at the time of theBothcollision.Mr.Oberholzer and the passenger sitting next to him sustained minor injuries, and a rear-seat passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment.

Queen Elizabeth II’s service as Britain’s longest-reigning monarch meant a lot to her subjects around the world, and she came along at the right time in history.That’s according to UCSB history professor Erika Rappaport, who noted the queen’s longevity brought a sense of stability to Britain, especially during crises. Her Majesty served as queen from 1952 to her death on“Ironically,Thursday. this sense of stability occurred during a time when the state and population of Britain changed dramatically,” Dr. Rappaport, who has taught classes about 19th- and 20thcentury Britain, told the NewsPress in an email. “During her reign, she oversaw the transition of the nation from a world empire to a European state; and, now since Brexit, its future is still unclear.”“Itisimportant to remember that she was the head of state for many, but not all nations, in the Commonwealth, so people around the world will be mourning her passing,” Dr. Rappaport said. “Theoretically, the monarchy is a glue that holds this loose body together, but as I noted several Commonwealth nations, such as India, have become republics.”

Jim was a loving and devoted father and grandfather. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii, dining out, BBQing, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the D.B. After teaching for many years, Tenicia accepted her father’s request to run the first black-owned and managed TV station in the U.S which he founded under the umbrella of the Modern Free and Accepted Masons and Order of the Eastern Star, serving as the Vice President and Station Manager, and later President and General Manager of WGPR TV-62. Tenicia received dozens of awards, including The Spirit of Detroit Award and the Communications Superstar 1983 Award presented by Women in Communications, Inc. She testified before a U.S. Congressional Subcommittee regarding blacks in broadcasting and television and had a weekly radio commentary on the current status of Blacks in Detroit.

In addition to serving as a Master Teacher, Tenicia was an active feminist, civil, human, and women’s rights activist committed to ending discrimination and inequality by race and gender. She and 2 other women organized the first Feminist Federal Credit Union in Detroit, MI, insured by the FDIC, to extend sole credit to women members, because banks required a male cosigner and asked personal questions about a woman’s reproductive plans to determine if they were eligible for a loan. She was also an active member of ZONTA International and the National Black Feminist Organization (NBFO). She spent her life fighting for the rights of women, including fighting for the legislation of Roe vs. Wade and many programs for Black youth. She was a trailblazer in her own right. Tenicia also volunteered for many organizations and received 2 U.S. Presidential Awards for her years of service with the Braille Institute, the American Red Cross, Help Carpinteria, GIRLS Inc, and many others where she logged over 4000 volunteer hours, up to the age of 82.

Jim loved growing up in the San Roque neighborhood of Santa Barbara where he enjoyed playing in the streets with his friends. He also had fond memories of going to Goleta Beach and Tucker’s Grove with his family and swimming at the SB Swim Club (where Café Stella is now located). Jim attended local schools including Peabody, Santa Barbara Junior High and High School where he ran track and was in journalism. He was later involved in the SBHS Reunion Committee. Jim graduated from San Francisco State University in 1974 with a degree in business. Once he graduated from SFSU, he embarked on a career in banking with Worldwide Financial, Crocker and Mid-State Banks. He joined the family commercial property business, known locally as Loreto Plaza, which was developed by Jim’s grandfather, Emil DeLoreto in 1955 from 2 lemon ranches. He oversaw the major remodel of Loreto Plaza completed in 2009.
Crosby is survived by his wife Ruth, two daughters, Pauline Kimmel, Elizabeth (Lisa) Hopper, their husbands John Kimmel and Jim Hopper and their four grandchildren, Mike Hopper, Christina Lutz (Kenny), Matt Hopper and Aaron Kimmel, along with their nieces and nephew, their children and grandchildren.

Moving to Santa Barbara in 1963 with his wife and two young daughters, he and his brother bought a dry cleaning/ tailoring business. He was a tailor for a time but the call of being “a farmer” resulted in him being a landscaper for most of his adult years. His landscaping won several awards. He was endowed with an extraordinary work ethic. His character ethic, centered on his faith and trust on God’s guidance was demonstrated daily. Although proud of what he was able to accomplish, he would say that he was “just a caretaker” of what God provided.
Crosby’s life was marked by the providence of God even before he was born and on numerous occasions during his life. He had seven siblings who lived into adulthood and he was the last of his generation to pass away. His family became refugees in 1938 and were relocated from Turkey to Ainjar, in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon. The family lived in one room for a long period of time. He learned that to survive and succeed in life one had to work hard, a character trait he practiced all his life. He worked in the fields and orchards as a youth and always identified himself as “a farmer at heart.”

James “Jim” Meade DeLoreto, Jr., a lifelong Santa Barbara resident, passed away on August 6, 2022 at the age of 70 surrounded by his family.

Tenicia attended the College of Education at Wayne State University, earning a B.A. degree in Education, where she pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and later obtained a M.A. degree in Guidance and Counseling. She taught students at many levels, including elementary school, middle school, as well as Mumford High School, Oakland Community College and Oakland University.

Through the influence of his older brother Charles, Crosby became a Christian during his teen years. With that added foundation he learned to serve others in various ways. He also yearned for something greater in life. He would look at the mountains surrounding the Bekaa Valley and ask God to direct his path. Providence came about in the form of a sweet and lovely girl from Pasadena, CA. Their romance consisted of many letters to one another professing a shared deep faith in God. Crosby and that girl, Ruth, married in 1955. Crosby immigrated soon thereafter to the United States, becoming a citizen and proud American. They recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.
Tenicia leaves her husband of 63 years, Dr. Karl Dwight Gregory, daughters Karin Diane Gregory of Southfield, MI, and Sheila Therese Gregory (Stephen) of John’s Creek, GA, her beloved son, Kurt David Gregory (Sarasota, FL), devoted brother Alterio Banks of Carpinteria CA, sister Harumi Banks of WA, and half-sister, Wendy Ogletree of Brighton, MI, and her grandchildren, Courtney Gregory Jones of John’s Creek, GA and Anthony Kelly Gregory Jones of Rock Hill, SC, along with many relatives and dear friends, among others. The family wishes to thank Tenicia’s former students, the WGPR TV-62 family and others who through the years have continued to ask about her welfare, sent flowers, gifts and offer their prayers.

Lynda “Lyn” Jean Steele passed away peacefully on September 1st at the age of 75. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Dale, father Taylor, mother June, and brother Jim. She was a graduate of San Marcos High School and a UCLA alumnus. Lyn’s passion was teaching and the years she spent with the children in the Santa Barbara School District brought her tremendous joy. Lyn is survived by her sons Andy and Jeff and their wives Andrea and Jenni. She took great pride in her grandchildren Izabella, Harrison, and Harlow. She is also survived by her sister Sharon and brother-in-law Chris, along with many nephews and nieces she thought the world of. No services are currently planned. On September 6, 2022, Steve passed away after battling cancer. He was born on December 23, 1941, in Oakland, CA, where he began competitive swimming at age seven. He lettered and was named all-city as an Oakland High freshman. Steve attended the University of Southern California, joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and graduated with a degree in telecommunications. He and Susan, his wife of 58 years, were college sweethearts and married in 1963.After graduation, Steve started his long career in broadcasting at NBC in Burbank. He rose through the ranks to become the general manager of several television stations across the country. The family lived in ten states before purchasing two television stations in the Midwest.Makingthe switch from television to radio in 1995, Steve founded the Santa Barbara Broadcast Center after purchasing radio stations KHTY, KTMS, KMGQ and KIST. He was very proud of the fact that KMGQ became the nation’s highest ranked smooth jazz radio station, as well as that KTMS was Santa Barbara’s top ranked radio station in 1997.The Broadcast Center’s philosophy was “Committed to the Community” and Steve’s community involvement was extensive. He was Chairman of the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce, Vice President of the Board of Old Spanish Days, Co-chairman of the Lung Association’s Celebrity Waiters Luncheon, and Board Chairman of the UCSB Economic Forecast Project, among other commitments. Steve enjoyed many friendships as a member of the Santa Barbara Club, the Santa Barbara Yacht Club, Ranchero Pobres and the DB Club.

He was born on November 21, 1951 in Santa Barbara, California, the son of Frances J. Neilson and James DeLoreto, Sr., and the oldest of four siblings. Jim married Sally Henry on June 15, 1974. Jim is survived by his wife, Sally DeLoreto, sons Christopher and Gregory DeLoreto, daughter Megan DeLoreto, son-in-law Matthew Sicheri, grandsons Lucas, Jacob, Zachary Sicheri, brother Edward DeLoreto, nephew Robert James “RJ” DeLoreto and nieces Caroline DeLoreto and Sarah Henry Zesati. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frances and James DeLoreto and brothers, William “Bill” DeLoreto and John DeLoreto.
He loved sailing, traveling, deep sea fishing, gourmet cooking, maintaining his wine cellar and always looking for the next great bottle of wine! But most of all he loved his family. He and Susan had two children. Their son Scott is an executive TV sports producer in Orlando and their daughter Stacy is a lawyer in St. Louis. They have three grandchildren, Rachel (Austin), Rebecca and Josh, and a great-granddaughter, Eliza.

Carl Divine passed away from pneumonia on 15 August in Beaverton, Oregon. He was born 27 March 1957 and grew up in Altadena and Laguna Beach, California. Carl lived for many years in the Santa Barbara area, where he adored his job at PK Engineering in Goleta. He is preceded in death by his mother, Charline Divine, whom he adored. He is survived by his wife Christine Norstrand of Beaverton, his daughter Ursula (Christopher Szeles) of Los Gatos, and his granddaughter Kallista, his brother Bill Divine of Pasadena, his sister Elizabeth Divine (Steven Boyd) of Altadena, and his niece Daphne Boyd. A favorite memory of his was the Pink Floyd California tour that he and Ursula followed in 1994. Carl was a longtime supporter and lover of nature and animals and loved to hike in the mountains above Altadena. His sense of humor will be sorely missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sierra Club.
Nancy was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to Charles and Gretchen (Greenleaf) Chase and grew up with her two sisters, Gretchen (Miller) and Barbara (Jefferson) and her faithful Irish Setter, Rastis McGoofis Magullius Chase. She leaves behind her four children, Randy, Linda, Camilla and Bob, numerous nieces and nephews, greatnieces and -nephews, ten grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren who will forever miss her legendary smile, energy and vitality. Nancy resided in SB for 65 years and was active in numerous foundations, including Hospice of Santa Barbara. Most notably, she shared her outstanding piano skills with numerous organizations, and instilled an early love of music in her children. Nancy was an avid hiker (hiking the Swiss Alps in her 80s), a beloved friend, a voracious reader, a curious student of life and loved the color pink. She wrote a book of poetry in her 70s aptly entitled “Music In My Soul.” She is now reunited with loved ones, sharing her beautiful smile, music and soul.

“The closet is full of brand new, brand name clothes and items including diapers, wipes, booster seats, playpens and car seats,” Ms. Banta told the NewsPress Saturday. “The closet is specifically for children placed in emergency foster care that don’t have much.”
And Ms. Banta noted how CRR has helped women in the county.“There was a mass exodus of women in the workforce during COVID,” she said. “We want women back in the workforce, and we do that by providing reliable, safe childcare. We can help people with creating a safe space for child care or providing access to childcare for low-income families.”Friday’s celebration raised approximately $20,000 for another way that CRR helps communities: the Heart to Home resource closet, a project that is not funded by state dollars.

The National Weather Service reported that 0.06 inch of rain fell Saturday in Goleta and Santa Maria and even less in Santa Ynez (0.02 inch) and Lompoc (0.01 inch). The weather did start to cool, but it was still hot and humid with highs of 80 in Goleta, 86 in Santa Ynez, 87 in Santa Maria and 90 in Lompoc. The most rain in Santa Barbara County was reported in New Cuyama, which saw 0.17 inch, along with a high of 86. The weather service predicts mostly cloudy skies today in Santa Barbara and UCSB, with a high of 80 in both locations. The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies elsewhere, with highs of 83 in Lompoc, 86 in Santa Maria and 87 in Santa Ynez. Showers are expected today in Cuyama, but it’ll be hot there too, with a high of 85.

The UCSB women’s volleyball team (2-5) picked up a four-set win (25-23, 25-23, 16-25, 25-21) on the road Friday night playing spoiler in New Mexico State’s (5-2) home opener.TheGauchos’ Michelle Ohwobete picked up her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs to go along with a match-high three aces. She was also perfect on passing, converting all 20 serve receptions sent her Tallulahway.Froley sent down double-digit kills for the second straight match with 12 on a .258 hittingMehanapercentage.Ma’aled the setting efforts with 21 assists and added fiveNiableudigs. The Dons and Chargers ran fast Friday morning despite the double whammy of heat and humidity.Boysand girls from Santa Barbara and San Marcos High Schools achieved many fast times during the 18-team Moorpark Invitational at Arroyo Vista Park.
“We lost a few girls from last year’s girls varsity to graduation and focus on academics. But we have had a few good freshmen, Ashley Hansen and Cate Bishop joined and show they can contribute, placing fifth and seventh in the ninth grade girls race.“And Phoebe Wolfe Lyons and Ellie Gleason showed us how it’s done, finishing third and fifth in the 12th-grade girls race.”
Biola’s Benjamin White won the men’s race with a time of 25:47.56.
In fact, the Santa Barbara boys’ cross country team placed second, and the Dos Pueblos’ girls team placedPlacingthird.sixth was the Dos Pueblos boys team, and in 10th place was the Santa Barbara girls team.Dos Pueblos Coach Micks Purnell praised the Chargers for their perseverance during the heatwave.“Thecommitment of the team to make a 5 a.m. bus from school and compete in the heat and humidity was truly awesome,” Purnell told the News-Press in an email. “They are a really cohesive group, which makes coaching a lot of fun.”

He will ask the Legislature to spend $86 million a year to provide breakfast and lunch to the 330,000 Washington students who don’t currently qualify for free meals.“When students are hungry, their ability to learn and engage in school is impacted,” Mr. Reykdal said in a statement Thursday. “Quality nutrition is a key component of student success and access to meals is an important part of being at school. While Mr. Biden claimed to be all about unity, in his speech he attacked and demonized MAGA Republicans and anyone who disagreed with his views. In turn, they offered the elected department heads a 2.5% raise, telling them to “take one for the team” since most of the rank-and-file employees were only getting 2.5%.Whereas, I typically applaud the supervisors holding the line on raises, this really rankled the elected officials and for good reason.
I was the same age as her son when the queen of England came to re-dedicate the rebuilt Old Globe Theatre in San Diego (which had been destroyed by arson) in 1981. In the months before the visit, we were schooled in complicated protocols, and the orchestration was flawless.

The time projected to build this relatively short rail system is a minimum of 22 years, subject to further change. We already know, by comparison with a statewide electric grid, that something as simple as a desalination plant takes 14 years to build in California.
