Vandenberg welcomes new members and continues push to establish U.S. Space Command headquarters By GRAYCE MCCORMICK NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

Vandenberg Air Force Base welcomed 21 new officers and enlisted members to the U.S. Space Force last week. The ceremonial induction tradition was held on Sept. 1 in front of the Headquarters’ Building, marking a significant step forward in the development of the U.S. Space Force. The branch organizes trains and equips forces to protect the U.S. and allied interests in space, along with developing space professionals and maturing the military doctrine for space power. The new inductees joined amid a region-wide push to headquarter the U.S. Space Command at Vandenberg. Organizations backing the push say the $1 billion establishment would boost the Central Coast’s economy, with 1,400 service members and international liaisons contributing locally, millions of dollars in contracts and services, and the ability to make the state a global leader in the commercial space industry. The Regional Economic Action Coalition has provided momentum behind this push, and said in a news release Friday that this will be a “huge boost toward establishing a thriving commercial space industry on the Central Coast, attracting investment and high-quality jobs in a $425 billion industry expected to grow $3 trillion over the next three decades.” REACH’s letter to the assistant secretary of the Air Force said Vandenberg’s region “exceeds the requirements of each basing selection criterion,” citing UCSB and Cal Poly, which produce nearly 9,000 engineering and science graduates each year,

As the heat waves and dry conditions increase the risk of wildfires, Santa Barbara County is encouraged by county, state and national officials to use extreme caution with potential fire ignition sources. The county is also being advised to prepare and assemble emergency kits. On Monday, the National Weather Services issued a “red flag warning” for the South Coast and mountains. The warning means critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly as a result of gusty winds, low relative humidity and very hot temperatures. “The very hot and unstable conditions will continue to bring a significant threat of large plume dominated fires,” the NWS warning stated. “Gusty Sundowner winds across southern Santa Barbara County and gusty northerly winds in the Los Angeles and Ventura county mountains will likely bring critical Red Flag fire weather conditions to these areas.” The NWS also issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Santa Barbara County over Labor Day Weekend, encouraging residents to take precautions. The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department told

the county to “stay cool” by wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing, avoiding the outdoors during the hottest hours, knowing signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and avoiding leaving children and pets in unattended vehicles. The department also reminded residents to drink plenty of water throughout the day, eat cold snacks, place a cool washcloth on the back of the neck, keep shades closed, avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest hours, maintain physical distancing, and provide water and shade for animals. Also on Monday, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region announced the temporary closure of Los Padres National Forest, along with the following national forests: Stanislaus, Sierra, Sequoia, Inyo, Angeles, San Bernardino and Cleveland. In addition, campers and visitors are prohibited from using any ignition source (campfires, gas stoves, etc.) on all National Forest System lands throughout the state. “Most of California remains under the threat of unprecedented and dangerous fire conditions with a combination of extreme heat, significant wind events, dry conditions and firefighting resources that are stretched to the limit,” the U.S. Forest Service stated in its news release.

Gavin Newsom, 3rd District

Supervisor Joan Hartmann, the mayors of Santa Maria and Lompoc, and U.S. Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris. “Vandenberg’s existing spacerelated missions and assets, along with its proximity to the Space and Missile Systems Center at Los Angeles Air Force Base, would offer Space Command unique and unparalleled advantages,” read the letter signed by U.S. Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-Santa Barbara, and Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris, both D-California. “The region offers Please see vafb on A8

New voyages are ahead for fans of longtime franchise

‘Star Trek’ at 54

By DAVE MASON NEWS-PRESS MANAGING EDITOR

“Star Trek” began 54 years ago today with a story essentially about a salt vampire. But even with “The Man Trap,” which aired Sept. 8, 1966, on NBC, “Star Trek” showed some hints of its social awareness. The episode, handpicked by the network to air first instead of the second “Star Trek” pilot “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” was about a shape-shifting alien who kills people as it extracts their salt. It seemed like the typical monster-of-the-week story, but there was some commentary about the alien being the last of its kind, like the buffalo (which had a resurgence since the 1960s). That was an example of how creator Gene Roddenberry tackled social issues with sci-fi metaphors for his “Wagon Train to the stars.” Despite its low-budget effects, the original “Star Trek” series captured viewers’ attention with its space-age adventure, unusual theatrical lighting, dramatic music and frequent camera zooms onto a worried Capt. Kirk’s face right before the commercial break. And William Shatner knew how to make Kirk’s speeches stand out, with his dramatic pauses: “Risk … is our business.” What stood out the most for fans was the acting and the writing in stories that were morality plays. “Star Trek” addressed racism, war, poverty, overpopulation and other social issues during its original three-season run. And the series, canceled by NBC, kept returning in one form or another because of fans who couldn’t get enough of Capt. Kirk and company on the small or big screens or the generations who followed them. After the original series, there was the animated version in the 1970s, followed by the six movies starring the original cast from 1979 to 1991. Today, “Star Trek” is enjoying a resurgence similar to what it experienced during the 1990s and early 2000s when fans saw “The Next Generation,” “Deep Space Nine, “Voyager” and the prequel series “Enterprise.” During the current Renaissance of “Trek,” Santa Barbara County is playing its role, just as it has in years past. Santa Ynez became LaBarre, France, for “Star Trek: Picard,” this year’s CBS All Access sequel to “The Next Generation.” “Picard” episodes were shot at Sunstone Winery, which became Please see STAR TREK on A4

And long before that, Santa Barbara County served as part of the planet in “Star Trek: Insurrection (1998). There have been other local faces on “Star Trek. Lompoc native Jeffrey Combs has played several “Star Trek aliens. On “Deep Space Nine, he had recurring roles as Weyoun, the Vorta serving the Dominion, and the head of the Ferengi Commerce Authority: Brunt. The drive-in, with its plentiful social distancing, has enjoyed its own resurgence during COVID-19. Despite the pandemic, “Star Trek is moving ahead with more new programming. Filming for “Star Trek: Discovery took place before the pandemic, so the third season will go to warp on Oct. 15 on CBS All Access. The plot will pick up with Cmdr. Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) having led the crew nearly a thousand years ahead into an uncertain future. Again, “Star Trek is going where no one has gone before. Last month, the animated comedy “Star Trek: Lower Decks premiered on CBS All Access. Not all fans are in love with the show, which is about junior officers on a not-so-important ship, but it has its moments. Sometime next year, fans hope to see “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which is designed to have the feel of the original series with stories that take place within a single episode. Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn will reprise their “Discovery roles as Capt. Pike, Spock and Number One, respectively. The series will continue the adventures of the USS Enterprise during the years before Capt. Kirk sat in the big chair. While fans welcome new

programming, it’s been a strange year for them without the usual conventions, varying from Creation Entertainment’s annual event in Las Vegas to ComicCon International in San Diego. The Nichelle Nichols Farewell Celebration, planned as the final convention for the actress who played the iconic Uhura in the original series and movies, was postponed from May to July and then delayed again. Indefinitely. There’s no doubt about Ms. Nichols deserving the recognition. None other than Martin Luther King Jr. urged her to continue performing during the original run of “Star Trek, which broke ground for TV roles for women and minorities. And besides acting, Ms. Nichols led efforts that successfully recruited women and minorities to be astronauts for NASA. Elsewhere, Creation Entertainment plans to hold its annual convention this December in the new Caesars Forum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, but another delay is possible. For now, fans in local and national “Star Trek organizations are enjoying virtual conventions over the internet and staying connected with each other over Zoom. So instead of “Beam me up, Scotty, fans can repeat one of Capt. Kirk’s phrases on the Enterprise bridge. “Screen on. email: dmason@newspress.com

Pandemic breakups and how you can avoid them

T

here has been a surge in divorce filings since the first lockdown. A few months of constantly being with the person you vowed to love forever has been too much for some couples. I truly believe that at the core, those couples never learned to nurture each other or their relationship, but let’s look at some of why they say it happened. A few couples have split due to political differences. Many others just got tired of their current partner and opted for loneliness or even isolation rather than share a space with this person they now dislike. If you are feeling like leaving, you may want to ask yourself: Are you really upset with the other person or with your current life situation? Clearly you have a desire to leave, but you may want to reconsider before acting on it. Most people break up because they think they can do better, and in some situations, it may be true, but is that really a reason to leave a marriage or a long-term relationship? The truth is we may have conditioned ourselves to look for perfection when good enough is more than enough to make a relationship work really well. When you seek the perfect partner or your soul mate, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. There is no one perfect person for you. What you need to find is the person who loves you enough to work through the inevitable roller coasters of life, including the current corona coaster we are all on. A lot of couples split up after 9/11, but a lot of people also came together. There were many breakups and also many marriages. That isn’t happening so much now, as dating and mating have become problematic. So why would you want to end a relationship that you could work to improve when leaving means you will probably be alone for an extended period of time? If the relationship is abusive, I encourage you to leave. But if the problem is selfishness or laziness or even an affair, you can choose to process the pain, make the

BARTON GOLDSMITH

necessary changes together and become a couple again. Don’t get me wrong. I hate what is happening in the world right now, but if I have to go through the plague, I’d prefer to do it with my best friend. We look out for each other, and we don’t get upset if someone is feeling a little out of sorts. We give each other room to be human. We share our experiences of living through this pandemic and the economic ravages it is leaving in its wake, along with the fight for equality for those who have been marginalized for too long. It’s a lot for anyone to deal with alone. Pandemic breakups could also be seen as panic breakups. Being scared that you will continue feeling unfulfilled is enough to make anyone run away, but you need to look at the whole

picture, including your part in it. If you have been giving what you feel you have been getting (in a negative way), then maybe you can acknowledge some responsibility here too? If you are putting the blame all on your partner, and they aren’t being abusive or acting insane, you need to check out what’s making you not want to connect fully with this person any longer. It could be something very simple, like a relationship with a family member that has gone sour or other differences. These are things that can be rectified, so you can allow yourselves to have the best lives possible during this very difficult time. I believe that being in and with family right now, no matter how small, will be the saving grace for those of us who walk that path. SUDOKU

Thought for Today “Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. — Leonard Cohen

Horoscope.com Tuesday, September 8, 2020 Aries — Mars retrograde hits this week could cause your fiery Aries energy to drain. This transit, being in your first house, could spark your temper easily—so watch your words. When the sun opposes Neptune on Friday, take some time to yourself and practice self-care. Taurus — Thankfully, Mars retrograde is going down in your privacy sector, Taurus. This might make you a bit more reclusive. But mostly, it’s important to remember it’s not time to do anything impulsive (which is just your style anyway!). Gemini — Your friendships might be a little up in the air right now, given the fact that Mars turns retrograde in your social zone this week. You’re always a sharp one, Gemini. Unfortunately, your words could cut a little deeper than expected while Mars is here. Stay low. Cancer — Mars retrograde occurs in your career sector, Cancer. At work, plans could be delayed. Though, in the first part of the week when the sun trines Jupiter, you could see a sweet surprise. Over the weekend, Jupiter turns direct—making it the best time to go on a date. Leo — Mars retrograde is about to bring drama to your friendships and network, Leo. Try not to lean into Mars’ fighting instinct. Things should get a little smoother over the week. Though, when the sun opposes Neptune on Friday, money issues can arise. Virgo — Plenty of aspects this week are bringing you some good business opportunities. But on Friday, when Neptune opposes the sun, it’ll be best not to hop into anything that sounds too good to be true. It’s best not to work on anything serious and, instead, take care of your body. Libra — Mars is in your relationship zone, and boy, does Mars retrograde have a surprise for you. Get ready for turbulence in love. Things are moving quickly and disharmony could be rampant. Luckily, as the weekend hits, Jupiter brings some nice opportunities, Libra.

INSTRUCTIONS Fill in the grid so every row, every column and every 3-by-3 grid contains the digits 1 through 9. that means that no number is repeated in any row, column or box. Sudoku puzzles appear on the Diversions page Monday-Saturday and on the crossword solutions page in Sunday’s Life section.

Scorpio — Self-care is being put to the test as Mars goes retrograde this week. You’ll need to rework how you approach your daily routines if you want to use this energy wisely. In fact, self-care is best for you on Friday Scorpio, as Neptune and the sun oppose one another.

Aquarius — Mars retrograde is happening in a zone that creates mental fog around what you’re doing in life. This is especially true when, on top of Mars retrograde, the sun opposes Neptune in Pisces on Friday—creating even more of a mental block than normal. This weekend, Aquarius, it’s best to put on the brakes.

Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Bond issue requires 55% approval to pass cold spring

Continued from Page A1

Voters will decide the matter when they cast their ballots on bond issue L. The project includes: replacing two portable buildings with three permanent classrooms; constructing science, technology, engineering and mathematics and maker laboratories; building one or more art classrooms; and renovating the library. The measure also seeks many updates and infrastructure upgrades to bring the 126-yearold building to modern standards. Furniture

and technology would also be purchased and included in the $7.8 million estimate. A portion of the budget is dedicated to adhering to socialdistancing guidelines. The bond issue needs 55% approval to pass. Property owners in the district can expect a tax of $14 per $100,000 assessed value for the first five years. Then the rate drops to $13 per $100,000. The median value of housing units in the district is more than $2 million, according to the 2018 U.S. Census. The bond is expected to be paid off by 2052, according to the district’s best estimates. The promises come alongside a disclaimer that the project may expand beyond its control.

The scope of renovation includes repairing and replacing plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling systems and fire alarms. A contingency is built into the estimate. Board members introduced the bond issue in August 2019, and the board voted unanimously June 22 to order the bond election. Meanwhile, the Cold Spring School District is among districts and schools that have applied for waivers from the state to allow students back on campus for in-person learning. email: ahanshaw@newspress.com

Efforts to bring Space Command HQ to VAFB get bipartisan support vafb

Continued from Page A1 a highly qualified workforce for aerospace engineering. California is a proven leader in the technology industry, and the Central Coast is home to multiple world class research universities.” The efforts to headquarter the command at Vandenberg received bipartisan support, including support from Andy Caldwell, the Republican candidate running this fall against Rep. Carbajal. “I’m all for it,” he told the NewsPress.

“It could have a huge benefit economically for the entire Central Coast because of the number of jobs it would create,” said Mr. Caldwell, who is a NewsPress columnist. However, he added that he does have an overall concern with the number of people who would actually qualify for these high-tech jobs, and that the general region doesn’t have the wherewithal, specifically with housing, to accommodate the people fulfilling these jobs. Joan Hartmann, the Santa Barbara County supervisor for the 3rd District, wrote in her letter: “After careful review of the

screening and evaluation criteria, we believe our community meets all minimum eligibility requirements and would earn a competitive score when assessed against the evaluation criteria.” She stated that local housing is available on and off base within the 25-mile range, along with childcare, medical facilities, state preserves, historical parks and beaches. In his letter, Gov. Newsom cited existing space missions in California that “support the Pentagon’s efforts to increase their investments with maximum efficiency and minimal expense.” “Community involvement with

the development of a state-of-theart Combined Space Operations Center at Vandenberg Air Force Base has not only increased the existing footprint of defense technology companies in the region, but has also provided the Department of Defense entities with unrivaled access to new technologies for their mission readiness,” the governor wrote. The case is now in the hands of the Air Force office, which will ultimately make the decision by early 2021. If VAFB advances as a finalist, word will come in November. email: gmccormick@newspress.com
