SB native remembers late ‘Glee’ actress Naya Rivera By PAUL GONZALEZ NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

“It’s unfortunate for businesses, but we have to think of the health of people first.”

“It’s going to hurt the small businesses and people that are dependent on minimum wage jobs.”

“I don’t know how I feel about COVID, like it being real or it being fake.”

“Since that announcement, business dropped off tremendously. But something has to be done to stop the spread.”

Newsom orders step back in reopening process

A “Glee” executive producer with local ties called the passing of actress Naya Rivera a tragedy. “This is a profound tragedy for all who knew and worked with her, but mostly it’s an unspeakable loss for her family,” Dante Di Loreto said. Mr. Di Loreto, who grew up in Santa Barbara, spent “every minute on set for the first two seasons” and traveled with the cast nationally and internationally during concert and film tours. Ms. Rivera, 33, went missing on July 8 during a pontoon-boat trip to Lake Piru with her 4-year-old son. Ventura County Sheriff’s Office search teams found her body at the lake on Monday morning. Search teams found Ms. Rivera’s body floating in the northeastern

part of the lake. Dental records confirmed the identity on Tuesday. Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said Ms. Rivera and her son were swimming in the lake together shortly before her death. “It was during that time that her son described being helped into the boat by Naya, who boosted him onto the deck from behind. He told investigators that he looked back and saw her disappear under the surface of the water,” Mr. Ayub said during a Monday evening press conference. He speculated that the boat may have drifted away from Ms. Rivera because it was unanchored. “She mustered enough energy to get her son back onto the boat, but not enough to save herself,” Sheriff Ayub said. email: pgonzalez@newspress.com

Gyms, nail salons, hair salons, barbershops, indoor malls and places of worship are now being ordered to close again, with many only having been open for less than a month. Gov. Gavin Newsom made an announcement effective immediately on Monday that ordered these businesses to close in the counties on the monitoring list for three days, including Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. In addition, the governor issued a statewide order closing indoor operations at dine-in restaurants, wineries and tasting rooms, movie theaters, family entertainment centers, zoos, museums and cardrooms. Bars also must close all operations. Please see closed on A8

Churches respond reopening rollbacks due to COVID-19

Trinity Episcopal Church was not impacted by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s order suspending indoor operation at churches, as the church never resumed indoor worship during reopening efforts. Services are being offered online through Zoom.

On Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom closed indoor operations for several businesses and organizations, including places of worship. While many churches have already transitioned to online or outdoor services, the order put some reopening plans on hold. Monsignor Richard Martini of St. Joseph Church in Carpinteria said his congregation is “ready to do whatever helps us get over the pandemic.” Monsignor Martini said the Catholic Please see churches on A8

The Santa Barbara Unified School District’s Board of Education held a special-study session Tuesday night to discuss the options for the fall semester, which is quickly approaching. Three weeks ago, the board approved a hybrid model the schools could adopt in order to reopen schools on time. The hybrid model would separate the student body into two cohorts, and from there, students attend classes two days a week, learn from home two other days, and all students learn from home on a fifth day. The recent spikes in coronavirus cases in the county, as well as many parts of California, could result in a change of plans -- including the possibility of starting the school year with complete remote learning, following suit behind the Los Angeles Unified and the San Diego Unified school districts. On Tuesday, six local experts from the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, the United Way of Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County Behavioral Wellness, and the Santa Barbara Education

Foundation gave their thoughts on the situation and answered questions from the board. Ellen Barger, the assistant superintendent at the Santa Barbara County Education Office, served as the facilitator. Susan Klein-Rothschild, who works at the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, gave important clarification Tuesday night as to what the district would do in certain situations when a student or teacher is sick. Ms. Klein-Rothschild said if someone tests positive with COVID-19, student or teacher, that entire class would be closed for 14 days. If there was someone in another class who was in close contact with said individual that is COVID-19 positive, then they would be removed and quarantined for 14 days as well --- but the classroom would remain open and the isolated person will be monitored closely. Ms. Klein-Rothschild also said the most important thing the board could do was “remain flexible.” “We don’t have the depth of knowledge and research about this new virus. hen asked to describe the primary message of “Parental Mental Health: Factoring in Fathers,” Jane Honikman, coauthor with Dr. Daniel B. Singley, likes to quote Dr. Joe Johnson, a retired psychiatrist from Sansum Clinic. “This book is a comforting and compassionate effort to bring dads front and center where they should be in the parenting paradigm.” Or as Ms. Honikman, well known in Santa Barbara as the founder of PEP or Postpartum Education for Parents in 1977 and Postpartum Support International in 1987, writes in the 92-page soft cover book published by Dowitcher Designs: “We have written this book because men have not been well-

represented in the parental mental health movement. While we have advanced our understanding of maternal mental health, the field, as a whole, has failed to include their partners. We are feminists and see men and women as equals, while acknowledging key differences. “We want to shift the focus of the maternal mental health movement to a parental mental health approach that includes the mental well-being of all parents, no matter what the gender. This includes mental wellness beyond the perinatal period.” Ms. Honikman, 74, said she enlisted the help of Dr. Singley, who lives in San Diego, “because he is two things I am not— a man and a clinical psychologist. He is the father of two sons and the founder of the Center for Men’s Excellence, which focuses on men’s health issues including early fatherhood.” Ms. Honikman and Dr. Singley, who earned his doctorate at the University of Maryland, have managed to pack a great deal of information in the pages of the small book, which includes “Tools that Rock: Resources for Dads and the People Who Support Them” and Facebook Dad Groups. Among the most meaningful is the chapter titled “A Call to Action,” which lists the 10 most important takeaways from the book: 1. Acknowledge the fact that an egg requires a sperm for pregnancy. 2. Pay attention to the medical

needs of men, too. 3. Ask thoughtful questions as the pregnant couple is transitioning from being a duo to parenthood. 4. Know the truth — having a baby is hard on relationships and marriage. 5. Men have hormones, too. 6. Watch for depression and

anxiety. 7. Fathers and mothers need to sleep, eat well, exercise, have time for themselves, share their emotions and get support. 8. Embrace gender-inclusive language. 9. Recognize and question harmful and sexist assumptions about men and masculinities. 10. Take action. Start this conversation within yourself and your community and make a difference. “We invite you to join the Parental Mental Health Movement. Social advocacy and action are required to meet the needs of ALL pregnant and postpartum families,” writes Ms. Honikman. “Our children will benefit from listening to and supporting both parents.” Email: mmcmahon@newspress.com

Gauchos’ Rillie ranked among college basketball’s top assistants By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER

CSB’s John Rillie has been rated among the top assistant coaches in college basketball by Stadium Basketball

Insider. SBI’s Jeff Goodman ranked Rillie second among all assistant coaches in the Big West Conference in a survey released this week. “I polled at least 20 coaches — primarily assistants — and asked for them to name the top assistant coaches in their respective league,” Goodman wrote. Joe Pasternack brought Rillie onto his staff at UCSB after being hired as head coach before the 2017-18 season. He promoted him to associate head coach the following year. The Gauchos have posted a win-loss record of 66-29 during those three seasons. “Coach Rillie is one of the best assistants that I’ve ever worked with,” Pasternack said. “He has a team ego which is very, very hard to find. “History is a vast early warning system. — Norman Cousins

ARIES — Relations with those you care about continue to be warm and supportive. Friends may want to pitch in and help you with a project, Aries, or you could lend a hand to someone else. Strong bonds with others could be forged at this time, which might lead to firm and lasting friendships in the future. This is also a good day to turn your attention to repairing, redecorating, or refurnishing your home. TAURUS — A strong sense of inspiration that seems to come from the higher planes could boost your natural artistic abilities, Taurus. No matter how rushed you may be with other tasks, it’s important to take time to note your ideas. They’re definitely worth pursuing and you’ll want to refer to them later. If you’re thinking about a friend, give that person a call. He or she might have news for you. GEMINI — Although you might feel a bit inclined toward solitude today, Gemini, don’t indulge it. This is a great day to get out with friends and meet new people, if possible, particularly women. You can forge closer bonds at this time, and you might also make valuable business contacts that prove profitable in the future. Affectionate communication with a romantic partner can make your day. Take the evening to enjoy a tête-à -tête with someone close. CANCER — An appealing new face could appear on the scene today, Cancer. This might lead to a new friendship, although this person could be charming enough to bring out your insecurities. Put these aside - you’re looking great. Since your efficiency is at an alltime high, plan on taking advantage of that by dealing with some errands you’ve been postponing for quite some time. LEO — A male friend could put you in touch with people from foreign countries or people who have traveled a lot. They might have valuable information that you could use later. This information could also help you finish old projects that have been waiting to be done. Your eye for detail is especially acute, Leo. Make notes of interesting facts even if they don’t apply right now. You’ll make good use of them later. VIRGO — You’re probably feeling especially sexy, Virgo, and you might want to take a lover out for a romantic dinner, if possible. You would especially enjoy going all out, experimenting with a new outfit, scent, or hairstyle. On a more mundane note, investments of either time or money should pay off today, as could hard work performed in the past. Have a great day! +*#!2 +1$)"$ LIBRA — Romance and marriage

are very much on your mind today, Libra. A special conversation with a possible love partner could have you hankering for happily ever after. Books on attracting and maintaining relationships might be especially appealing as well as useful. Take care not to put too much stock in detailed analyses, however. Remember that such books are based on generalities. You’re unique. SCORPIO — You’re feeling especially healthy, energetic, and attractive today, Scorpio, and some friends may suddenly see you in a new light. This could bring a valuable boost in self-confidence. New careers that pay more and offer more of a challenge are especially appealing to you now. Consider them seriously. Write down your ideas and research them to see if they’re workable. This may be the start of a whole new life. SAGITTARIUS — An appealing new face could appear on the scene today, Cancer. This might lead to a new friendship, although this person could be charming enough to bring out your insecurities. Put these aside - you’re looking great. Since your efficiency is at an alltime high, plan on taking advantage of that by dealing with some errands you’ve been postponing for quite some time. CAPRICORN — Friction with family members, particularly women, could prove irritating, especially since you’re torn between their quirks and the love you have for them. This isn’t the time to hold grudges, Capricorn. Let them go. You might feel the urge to do some home repairs, redecorate, or otherwise improve your home, or perhaps cook a great meal. Channel your energy into these activities instead of quarreling. You’ll be glad you did. AQUARIUS — Today should bring pleasant and profitable communications with women, possibly some new friends. A lot of people will want talk to you, although perhaps more than you can realistically handle. Be careful not to commit to too many things. You could end up spreading yourself too thin. Travel to faraway lands may seem tempting at this time, Aquarius, but that might not be possible for some time. Relax and enjoy the company for now. PISCES — New opportunities may give you a chance to increase your financial standing and expand yourself professionally. Innovations that you’ve produced in the past have attracted the attention of those in positions of authority, Pisces, and the fruits of your labor may manifest now. Don’t expect to be able to relax and enjoy them, however, as a lot of effort still lies ahead. Summon all your inner resources and charge ahead.

Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great way to test your knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

Dons hire Alcaraz Cuellar, Sims to coach soccer programs By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER

Todd Heil found a familiar face to be his successor as boys soccer coach at Santa Barbara High and a former nemesis of UCSB to head up the girls program. Heil, who took over as the Dons’ director of athletics after 21 seasons of coaching, named former SBHS star Ricardo Alcaraz Cuellar as the new boys coach and former Cal State Northridge AllAmerican Willie Sims to coach the girls varsity. “I feel incredibly fortunate that we’ve been able to add Ricardo and Willie to lead our boys and girls soccer programs, respectively,” Heil said. “While they are both great coaches, they’re even better people.” Alcaraz Cuellar was the playmaking midfielder in 2001 for the first of Heil’s three CIFSouthern Section championship teams. He scored nine goals and assisted eight others to lead the Dons to a 27-1-4 record and a No. 2 national ranking from the National Soccer Coaches Association and Adidas. Santa Barbara wound up sharing the CIF-SS Division 3 crown with Brea Olinda after they battled to a 0-0 deadlock in the final. Alcaraz Cuellar also played soccer at Westmont College, earning All-Golden State Athletic Conference honors in 2003. He later returned to Santa Barbara High to coach the Don’s lowerlevel programs for the last decade while also working as a teacher at Franklin Elementary School. “Ricardo always had coaching

church, located at 1532 Linden Ave., reopened for Mass and daily personal private prayer on June 2. Church staff allowed 100 people into the pews for Sunday Mass to maintain six feet of social distance. “Our commitment to Christ and his commandment to love one another compels us to look out for each other and to take the necessary precautions to keep each other safe from this virus. Since the beginning of June, we had been conducting Mass in our church with precautionary protocols. It was very safe and the number of worshippers was limited to 100. We will now pivot and move the Sunday services outdoors to our expansive, grassy field,” Monsignor Martini said. Church priests will hold daily Mass Monday through Friday without a congregation. The church will livestream and record the Mass in English at 7:30 a.m. and in Spanish at 6:30 p.m. Priests will hold Mass outdoors on Sunday at 7 a.m. in Spanish, 9 a.m. in English and 11 p.m. in Spanish. Monsignor Martini said the church will use precautionary protocols, such as temperature checks, and require all parishioners to wear face coverings and sanitize their hands. Church staff will escort parishioners to marked locations to maintain social distance. Parishioners will not sing, but they will still be able to receive Holy Communion. “We continue to pray for all to be spared the worst of this illness. And we ask the Lord to heal those who have been afflicted by the virus,” Monsignor Martini said. Trinity Episcopal Church, at 500 State St. in Santa Barbara, did not resume indoor worship during the COVID-19 reopening efforts. “We’re not impacted by the new state COVID-19 orders. We continue to offer worship online, via Zoom,” The Rev. Elizabeth Molitors said. Recorded services and instructions on how to log into the church’s Sunday livestream are available at https://trinitysb. ladiocese.org/ First Christian Church, located at 1550 S. College Drive in Santa Maria began celebrating indoors in June. Church staff enforced precautionary measures and gave attendees the option to sit outside. Lead Pastor Jim Larrabee said the church will move services outdoors. “While we might not agree with our governor‘s most recent COVID response, we do agree that people need to be safe,” he said. “We’ve checked with our local medical professionals and are following their recommendation to move all services outdoors.” email: pgonzalez@newspress.com

qualities about him as a player,” Heil said. “He was always leading and pushing his teammates during practices and games. It was natural for his teammates to respect and follow him because he was always willing to do what he was asking of them. “His passion for the boys’ soccer program and SBHS as a whole is unmatched. I have no doubt that he will work tirelessly to carry on the established tradition within the program that is simply Nosotros.” Sims played on CSUN teams that challenged UCSB for Big West Conference preeminence from 2003 to 2005. He was voted Big West Co-Offensive Player of the Year in both 2003 and 2004 before earning NSCAA First-Team AllAmerica honors in 2005. He led the Matadors to the Round of 16 in the 2005 NCAA

Tournament by leading them past the Gauchos, 3-2, in an epic, second-round match in Northridge. UCSB’s playoff exit sandwiched a pair of appearances in the NCAA final, which included its national championship run of 2006. Sims was selected by the New England Revolution in the second round of the 2006 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, playing mostly for the club’s reserve team. He spent the bulk of his professional career in the United Soccer League and, having been born in Guatemala, also played for that country’s national team. His professional career included stints on such clubs as the Puerto Rico Islanders, the San Fernando Valley Quakes, the Miami FC, Suchitepéquez of Guatemala, the Hollywood United Hitmen, the Ventura

County Fusion, and finally the Los Angeles Misioneros from 2012 to 2014. “We feel incredibly fortunate to have someone of Willie’s playing and coaching experience lead the girls soccer program at SBHS,” Heil said. Sims, 36, began coaching as a volunteer assistant at CSUN in 2009. He also assisted the varsity team at Bishop Diego High School in 2013. He’s been working as development director and coach for the girls side — U9 to U14 — with the Santa Barbara Soccer Club. He began helping with the Dons’ varsity last season, assisting interim coach Bridget Thomson after Santa Barbara fired its head coach just before Christmas. The Dons wound up advancing to the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs, winning a wild-card game before losing to top-seeded Flintridge Prep, 3-2, in a first-round, overtime thriller. “Willie joined the girls soccer coaching staff at SBHS in the middle of last season and had an immediate impact on the varsity team,” Heil said. “He’s a student of the game who understands the importance of not just developing soccer players, but helping our student-athletes grow as individuals, as well. “We’re very excited about the future and direction of the girls soccer program with Willie at the helm.” Heil is still in search of a head softball coach. Foresters erupt early in win over Santa Maria By GERRY FALL NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

An early offensive explosion propelled the Santa Barbara Foresters to an easy 17-4 win over the Santa Maria Pea Soup on Tuesday night at Pershing Park. The game was cut short to seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. After scratching out a pair of runs in the first inning, the Foresters erupted for 12 in the second to put the game out of reach before the sun went down. Twelve Santa Barbara batters came to the plate before an out was recorded in the second inning. It was more than enough offense for Foresters starting pitcher Justin Campbell. The 6-foot-7, 230-pound right-hander from Oklahoma State tossed four shutout innings to earn the victory. Campbell allowed only two hits while he struck out six and walked one..

Offensively, Christian Encarnacion led the way for Santa Barbara (11-2) with five runs batted in. The incoming Oklahoma State Cowboy finished with two hits, including his team-leading fifth home run of the season -- a rocket over the center-field fence. Branden Boissiere was next for the Foresters with three hits and three runs batted in. Ryan Holgate, Sean McLain and Pat Caulfield each drove in two runs for Santa Barbara. Holgate continued his hot hitting for the Foresters with three hits, including a home run and a double. McLain also homered for Santa Barbara. The 17 runs is the second-highest output for the Foresters this season. They scored 35 runs in a win over Bakersfield on July 4. Santa Barbara hosts Santa Maria again tonight at 6 p.m at Pershing Park. No spectators are allowed. email: gfall@newspress.com

‘Nobody is ever going to fault you for being extra careful’ sbusd

Continued from Page A1 different episodes of COVID-19 over time, which means we have to be able to change as the conditions change,” Ms. KleinRothschild said. She added that changes in positive cases, hospitalizations and even those in the Intensive Care Unit would likely mean change in guidance from the county or Gov. Gavin Newsom. “COVID-19 depends among all of us in the community. We all have to work together. It is the behavior of all of us that will make the disease decrease and go down. It can’t just be some organizations, some people, it has to be us together,” Ms. KleinRothschild said. Dr. Dan Brennan, a local pediatrician, had a similar sentiment, adding that safety

should be the number one priority and that the decision to open schools should be tied to the current rate of community spread. “Nobody is ever going to fault you for being extra careful with our kids and taking the abundance of caution approach,” Dr. Brennan said. Suzanne Grimmesey from Santa Barbara County Behavioral Wellness spoke about the importance of students attending school and the benefits it would provide for their mental health. “I don’t need to say how critically important going to school is for a child’s emotional health — not online, but the actual importance of attending school,” Ms. Grimmesey said. She added that no matter the direction the school board goes, the messaging will be important. “School mental health staff

may even be asked to assist in communications. There is much fear-based messaging about schools reopening already swirling around in the community. Explaining the decision-making process regarding schools… and the decisions taken to keep students safe is important and will help build trust,” Ms. Grimmesey said. Melinda Cabrera of United Way of Santa Barbara and Margie Yahyavi from Santa Barbara Education Foundation both talked about the ways their organizations and other nonprofits could help build a network of support for students to learn remotely, and for parents to have childcare if they need to go to work. ‘It definitely has an impact on the economy’ closed

Continued from Page A1 These orders stem from a new spike in COVID-19 cases in Santa Barbara County. The county Public Health Department reported 184 new cases on Tuesday, bringing the total amount of reported cases to 4,323. Santa Barbara residents and Californians have many different views regarding this new step back. Some support the additional closures; others do not. Stan Fogg and his wife, Kathy Fogg, were passing through from Beaumont, and said they both stand behind the governor in his rulings. “It’s probably a good idea,” Mr. Fogg said of the order. “(COVID-19) is spreading a lot.” “He has to do what he has to do,” Mrs. Fogg said of Gov. Newsom. “It’s unfortunate for businesses, but we have to think of the health of people first.” Bob Clark, a resident of Los Angeles, opposes the closures. “I believe it hurts the small businesses,” he said. “It’s going to hurt the small businesses and people that are dependent on minimum wage jobs.” Mark Lentini is a resident of Goleta and a past restaurant owner. His family owns numerous restaurants in Washington, and he previously owned Copenhagen Sausage Garden in Solvang. “I don’t know how I feel about COVID, like it being real or it being fake,” he said. “It’s hard to tell what the truth is. I can tell you what the news tells us and

what’s reported, but I can’t tell you really what’s going on.” He added that he believes it’s a product of the “New World Order.” Chef Harold Welch runs Embermill, a Caribbean restaurant at 1031 State St., which was formerly Aldo’s and the Copper Coffee Pot. He’s lived in Santa Barbara for 40 years, and said he believes that people are getting scared again. “It definitely has an impact on the economy. Since that announcement, business dropped off tremendously,” he said. “But something has to be done to stop the spread.” He continued that he doesn’t think many people in this town “respect the rules of engagement.” “I can’t tell you the amount of people that don’t have a mask on, and if you’re going to do that, I have zero tolerance,” Mr. Welch said. “I do not want to get (COVID-19) because I don’t know what it’s going to do to me. I’m in my late 50s.” However, the chef said that he can’t afford to close his restaurant, so he is keeping the doors open to outdoor seating. “If I close my doors, I probably would go out of business. I can’t close my doors,” he said. “If I do, there goes my life, everything I’ve worked for all these years.” He concluded saying that he thinks it all comes down to making judgements, and for people to wear masks even if they don’t like it, or else they place others so much at risk. email: gmccormick@newspress.com

PROBER, Paul Ronald Paul Ronald Prober, age 78, passed away July 7 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Death was caused by cancer and other natural causes. Although his parents were living in Santa Barbara, Paul was born in Los Angeles on September 11, 1941. Paul was the oldest of four boys born to Harvey William Prober and Edythe Mae (Bell) Prober. For years the family lived a migrant life. Harvey worked for the Bridge and Building Division of the Southern Pacific Railroad and the family lived in a converted boxcar that was moved to wherever in California Harvey was working on a bridge, building, or seawall. This caused Paul and his brothers to change schools several times a year. The family finally settled in Azusa CA, where Paul graduated from Azusa High and Citrus Junior College. Electronics was Paul’s vocation and passion. After enlisting in the Army he served as a radar specialist in Ankara, Turkey. He then had a long career at Raytheon in Goleta. Throughout his life he was an inveterate inventor. He was constantly working on his ideas and projects, many of which resulted in patents. Paul met his future wife, Carol Ann Bedford, while both were still toddlers and their parents were neighbors. A photo of Paul and Carol splashing in a plastic kiddie pool is a family favorite. The parents ended up being lifelong friends, and Paul reconnected with Carol and started driving up to Santa Barbara to date her while still in high school. They married while Paul was at the end of his Army stint and they began their life together in Santa Barbara. For a while they divided their time between homes in Santa Barbara and Santa Fe. But to Paul’s great remorse, Carol suffered a stroke and died in 2016. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carol, and his brother Dennis. He is survived by his brothers Alan Prober and Gary Prober, his daughter Melissa Prober, his son Jeffery Prober, daughter-in-law Anna Prober, and his granddaughters Sofia and Ava Prober. Due to the pandemic, there will be a family-only graveside service at Santa Barbara Cemetery.
