We Worship God as Catholic Christians
As your child begins to study Christian worship, think about your own understanding of the value of worshiping with the Christian community.
Through our participation in the sacraments, we are given the grace to strengthen our relationship with God. We are able to worship the Father by following Christ.
The Church Teaches
The sacraments of the Church bring the significant moments of our lives to God. In each sacramental celebration, we come before the Lord as a community of faith and joyfully accept our vocation to “be holy and without blemish before him.” (Ephesians 1:4) Through the Sacrament of Baptism, we are given the grace to live in faith. Baptismal consecration initiates us into the community of faith. It challenges us to bring the entire human community into communion with Christ. It leads us to celebrate other sacramental acts that remind us of how to live the life we received in Baptism.
The Jerusalem community of disciples concentrated on adherence to the teachings of the Twelve, the Eucharistic Liturgy, living the way of Christ, and prayer. These fundamental elements of ecclesial life have remained constant for more than two thousand years. Faith and worship are as closely related to one another as they were in the early Church: faith gathers the community for worship, and worship renews the faith of the community. National Directory for Catechesis #32
Reflecting on the Message To praise God is to acknowledge his greatness and goodness. Praise is the most fitting of all prayers, for our highest duty as human beings is to recognize and respond to God’s gifts. His goodness continually surprises us with signs of his steadfast love. We come in worship to honor God and to acclaim his mighty deeds.
Aware of God’s great love for us, we respond with lives lived in conscious remembrance of the wonderful works of the Lord.
We give praise and thanks to God for all he has given us. We live in joy because of God’s all-forgiving love. We humbly petition God, trusting that he is with us and will help us in every circumstance of life. Jesus’ life was full of praise and worship of the Father. His every thought, word, and act worshiped God. Indeed, Christ’s last gift to us was the Eucharist, the offering of himself in joyful praise to the Father. What Jesus did, we are called to do. In imitation of him, we are asked to live lives of prayer, service, and sacrifice. ©

Growing in Christ’s Love
Worship and Your Family
Ever since the day of our Baptism, we have had the grace to bring the image of Christ within us to life. If we fix our gaze on Christ throughout our lives, we will experience all that we are and all that we have through him. Our lives will be joyful worship united to the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ our Savior.
Your response to all that God does for you each day profoundly affects the way your children will worship God. To reinforce the everyday ways you transmit attitudes and values, you may wish to use one or more of the following ideas:
Reflect on the following questions to clarify your understanding of community worship, which your child will learn about in Unit 1. • How does the way we live each day give worship to God? • What does Jesus tell us about worshiping God? • What difference does Baptism make in my life? • What does Holy Communion mean to me? • How do I share my faith with my family? During the next few weeks, your child will be learning about how our worship as a Christian community helps us live the life we received in Baptism. During this time, you may wish to review and renew your own appreciation of God’s gift of grace. The following suggestions may help you: 1. Designate quiet times to be observed in your home that provide an atmosphere for prayer. 2. Look around your home for visual reminders of God’s gift of grace. Is a crucifix in a prominent place? Is religious art part of the decor of your home? Is the Bible in a place of honor? 3. Choose a time for a quiet visit to the Blessed Sacrament and reflect on how God has shown his great love for you.
2
1. Family prayer is a powerful means of forming Christian community in the home. Make time for family prayer. As part of this prayer, each member of your family might praise and thank God for a particular gift. 2. Choose at least one activity to do from the Things to Do at Home section of the page your child brings home from each chapter. 3. Plan together how your Sundays can be meaningful family time. Let each family member have a turn choosing an activity that all can enjoy doing together. 4. Discuss how your family shares Jesus’ love with others. Decide on one thing you will do each week to grow in his love. 5. Learn about your patron saints. (Those who do not have a saint’s name can adopt a patron saint.) Ask these patrons to bless their namesakes. Celebrate their feast days. 6. Reflect frequently on short selections from Scripture. Psalm 95 and John 6:32–40 might be good places to start. 7. Schedule a time for praying the Rosary. Ask family members to bring specific intentions for each mystery of the Rosary.

Saint Justin and His Companions
News Reporter: I’m here reporting from the
city of Rome. We’re about to hear the trial of Justin and four other prisoners. All have been accused of being Christians. Rusticus, the man who will judge their case, has just walked in. He’s beginning the trial. Let’s listen. Rusticus: Justin! You stand accused of great crimes. Tell me, is it true that you refuse to obey the gods and the orders of our Roman emperor? Justin: I obey the commands of our Savior Jesus Christ. I know about your gods, and I have studied the teachings of the world’s great thinkers. After considering them all, I have pledged myself to follow the true teachings of the Christians. Rusticus: You foolish man! You prefer the teachings of the Christians to those of our great emperor? Justin: I do, for Christian teaching is true. Rusticus: Just what is this teaching of the Christians? Justin: We worship the one true God who made the world. This one true God sent his Son, Jesus, to earth that we might be saved from sin. Jesus has taught us the truths by which we live. Rusticus: Do you confess that you are a Christian? Justin: Yes, I am a Christian. I cannot deny what I know to be true. Rusticus: And you, Chariton, are you a Christian too? Chariton: I am. I follow the teachings of Jesus. Rusticus: And what do you say, Charito? Charito: God has given me the great gift of faith in his Son. Rusticus: And you, Evelpistus, you were once a slave to the emperor himself. You, 6
more than the others, have seen the great wisdom and power of our leader. Surely you are no Christian. Evelpistus: I am a Christian. I am a slave no more. I have been freed by Christ, who died to save me. One day he will take me to heaven. Hierax: Judge, I am Hierax. You don’t even need to ask. I too worship the one true God. I have long been a Christian, and I shall always be one. News Reporter: The courtroom is restless. A man has stood up and joined the Christians on trial. I’m told his name is Paeon. Paeon: If you try these men as Christians, then you must try me as well. For I am also a Christian! Rusticus: You, Justin, are said to be a wise man. Listen well. I can have you beaten and beheaded. Will your God help you then? Justin: We will die before we give up our beliefs. There is no amount of torture that will make us offer sacrifices to false idols. Am I right? All Christians: Yes! We agree! Justin: Do your worst. When we are dead, we will go to heaven to be with our Lord, and we will be rewarded beyond anything your emperor can dream of. Rusticus: Very well. Take them away! Punish them fully. Torture them until they break. And if they do not break, take their heads! News Reporter: The holy martyrs are leaving now. Their faces are radiant. None seems afraid, even though all will be cruelly whipped and then beheaded. And that’s the news here in Rome this day in the year 165.

Blessed Damien, Martyr of Molokai
Joseph de Veuster was born in Belgium on January 3, 1840. While at college, he decided God was calling him to be a priest. He joined the same community his brother had joined and took the name Damien. Damien’s brother had dreamed of being a missionary overseas. But he became ill and was unable to go. Damien offered to go in his place. He traveled to Hawaii and was ordained in Honolulu. For nine years, Damien served the people in different villages around Hawaii. While working, he heard about a settlement of lepers on the island of Molokai. He was told that life on the island was terrible for the lepers. They were very poor, and there was not one doctor or priest on the island. Father Damien thought he was needed there. He went to Molokai to work with the lepers.
He even started a choir and a band. He made the lepers feel that they were people with dignity. They learned to better respect themselves and one another. Father Damien always began his homily with “My dear lepers.” One Sunday he stood before his congregation and began his homily by saying “My fellow lepers.” At first, it was very quiet. Then people began to sob. Their beloved Father Damien had gotten the disease. Even though he was ill, Father Damien carried on his work. Eventually, a group of Franciscan sisters from New York, under the leadership of Mother Marianne, came to help. Father Damien died when he was 49 years old.
Those who could walk came to meet Father Damien’s boat. They wanted to see this priest who had come to work with them. They were sure he wouldn’t stay long when he saw what life there was like. Lepers often have unpleasant sores, and some even lose fingers and toes. Because there were no laws or police on the island, many who were not very ill lived wild lives. Father Damien got busy right away. He cleaned up huts, nursed those who were very sick, and tried new medicines. Those able to help were put to work building better houses. Father Damien preached and offered Mass, but he also built roads, water systems, orphanages, and churches.

Selections from Confirmation Reflection Notebooks
Nov. 19,
Jan. 10,
Dear God,
Dear God,
I began preparing for Confirmation today. I want to do a good job so that I will know how to use the Spirit’s gifts. I want to get to know you better. Then the Holy Spirit will help me get to know others better through service projects.
I did my first service project today. I cleaned our neighbor’s basement. He is an older man who lives alone and can’t get around very well.
I think I need to focus on prayer. It is the most important thing for me during this time of drawing closer to you. I’ll need to be alone with you for a long time, asking guidance, before I decide to make the commitment to be a witness to Christ.
Matt H. Nov. 23,
Dear Jesus, We have just learned what will be required of us as we prepare for Confirmation. Wow! It’s a lot! At first, I wasn’t even sure I needed the Holy Spirit. Then Saturday I had a big problem. I lost my temper and hit my brother really hard. I didn’t mean to, but I had to take my frustration out on someone. I ran outside and into the park. I didn’t know what to do. Out in the trees, I realized just how much I need the Holy Spirit. You remember. I prayed real hard. Then I was able to make up with my family. I will study my religion harder and read the New Testament to get to know you better. I feel you are asking me to be more cheerful and help more at home. I’ll try my best.
Shelley J.
I want to serve others, just as Jesus served the apostles. He washed their feet right before the holiest but hardest act in his human life. I want to follow his example before I do one of the holiest yet hardest acts of my life. I say hardest because a confirmed person has more serious duties and will be tempted more often. I felt proud and humble when the work was done and Mr. Gonzalez thanked me. I realized that you had helped me to be of service. Jesus made others feel good inside by helping them, and so did I.
Mike V. Feb. 2,
Dear Holy Spirit, For Confirmation, I am taking my Christian name. It will symbolize the close link between my Baptism and Confirmation. Besides, I like Saint Joseph. He did a great job of taking care of Mary and Jesus. I just wrote my letter to the bishop. I asked to be confirmed because I want to come closer to God and use the gifts you give me. I feel good about the way I’ve been preparing for your coming. I have sinned a lot less than before, and I am doing more good things without being told.
Joe K.
Dec. 10,
Dear Jesus,
Feb. 22,
My teacher wants me to write what I have discovered or learned through prayer. Through prayer, I have discovered that I can really talk to God and that he really answers me. Sometimes God gives me a sign that tells me what to do. I have made a prayer corner in my room. I plan to pray or read my Bible there each evening.
I am now confirmed! When the bishop laid his hand on me, I felt inspired to spread God’s Word and live the way of Christ. I am ready and willing to follow the Spirit’s wisdom. I know the Spirit will help me because I have faith and believe in him.

Unit 1 Family Celebration
On the Anniversary of Baptism The following celebration could precede a family meal or be part of a family time that would include games, singing, or other activities. This would be an ideal time to bring out baptismal pictures and other remembrances and to talk about how the day of Baptism was celebrated. Another activity might be decorating bottles for holy water—one for each bedroom. Gather the family around a table covered with a clean white cloth. On the table, place a Bible and a lighted baptismal candle or other lighted candle. The person celebrating his or her anniversary of Baptism should have a crucifix and a container of holy water.
Leader: On the day each one of us was baptized, we were washed in the waters of Baptism and signed with the cross of Christ. Today we want to celebrate with [Name] his [her] birth into God’s family. (The anniversary person places the crucifix on the table.) All: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you, because by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world. Leader: Whenever we make the Sign of the Cross, we proclaim that we belong to Christ. He is our king and our Lord. Let us begin our prayer together by making the Sign of the Cross with holy water, a reminder that through the waters of Baptism, we received new life. 22
(The anniversary person signs himself or herself and presents the container of holy water to the other family members.)
Family Member: God’s Holy Word tells us of his love for us. It tells us what we can do to follow Jesus. Leader: In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that he wants his followers to be a light for the world. Let us listen to God’s Holy Word. (A family member reads Matthew 5:14–16, 23–24.)
Family Sharing (Each family member may share how the anniversary person is a light for others.)
Leader: God our Father, you always work to save us, and now we rejoice in the great love you give to all your chosen people and especially to [Name]. Protect and continue to bless these people whom you have made your children through the waters of Baptism. (Sprinkle each family member with holy water.) We ask this through Christ our Lord. We Celebrate the Eucharist
In this era of constant activity, it is so easy to list “Go to Mass” between “Pay the phone bill” and “Take Tom to practice” and then to give the first no more attention than either of the other two. We owe it to God, ourselves, and our children to make our Sunday eucharistic celebrations special.
The Church Teaches The liturgical life of the Church revolves around the sacraments, with the Eucharist at the center. “The sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church,” by which divine life is given to us and celebrated. National Directory for Catechesis, #35A
Reflecting on the Message At Mass, we gather as the people of God. Christ is present in the community gathered, in the Word proclaimed, in the priest celebrating, and especially in his Body and Blood in the Eucharist. Introductory Rites The prayers and actions at the beginning of Mass gather the community together. They remind us that we are the people of God and that Christ resides in each of us. As we gather in song and in prayer, we remember our call to follow Christ and our need for grace to strengthen us in that call. The prayers help us to hear God’s Word and prepare us to come to the eucharistic table. Liturgy of the Word The readings from Scripture are the main part of the Liturgy of the Word. God is present in his Word. The readings tell us of
©
the marvelous things God has done for us by creating us in his image, redeeming us with his Son, and calling us to holiness by our Baptism. The homily by the priest or deacon explains the readings to us, helping us to make the connection between God’s Word and our lives. We respond to God’s Word by praying to live that Word in our lives. We express our faith as a community by praying the Nicene Creed. With our faith and hope renewed through the Scriptures, we bring our prayers and petitions for the needs of the Church, our world, and all people. Liturgy of the Eucharist The Liturgy of the Eucharist corresponds to the actions of Jesus at the Last Supper. He took the bread and the cup, gave thanks and praise, and offered them to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat, this is my Body. Take and drink, this is my Blood. Do this in memory of me.” 1. The gifts of bread and wine are brought to the altar. 2. The Eucharistic Prayer is the great prayer of thanksgiving for the work of salvation. Christ acts through this prayer to change our offerings into his own Body and Blood. 3. The one bread, which is now Christ, is broken and given to the faithful. It is a sign of their oneness in Christ. So is the one cup, which is sometimes shared. As the faithful receive the living Jesus in Holy Communion, they become one with him and with one another.

21B Concluding Rite The final prayers of the Mass send the community out to live what we have heard in the Word and become what we have received in the Eucharist. We do this by sharing God’s message with others and living the life of a disciple.
Growing in Christ’s Love Here are several ideas to help you make your Sunday eucharistic celebration meaningful throughout the week. A few minutes of quiet prayer before Mass can open you to receive the grace Christ desires to give you in his Word and his Eucharist. 1. Set aside a few minutes midweek to read the Gospel or other readings for Sunday Mass. Find one sentence that seems particularly meaningful. Write it out and put it in a visible place, such as a bathroom mirror. Read it often during the week and let God speak to you through it. 2. Choose one part of the Mass to concentrate on during a month. Think about why it is an important part of the Mass. Pray it thoughtfully at Mass. 3. In your nightly examination of conscience, ask yourself how you have lived out Christ’s call to grow in love that you heard proclaimed in Sunday’s Gospel.
Worship and Your Family You are constantly laying the foundation for God to work in the heart of your child. Be aware of what is already happening in your home and change routine actions into moments of grace. 1. Every family meal can be an opportunity to grow in appreciation of the Eucharist. Saying grace before meals, sharing stories of your day, and eating a meal all prepare us to share the Lord’s Supper at Mass. 2. Establish your own family rituals. Celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, sporting events, report cards, and other everyday moments can help your family learn the importance of ritual. Just as gathering for the Eucharist brings the faithful together as one, so family rituals can bring your family closer together. Make prayer a part of your family rituals. 3. Time spent traveling to and from Mass can be opportunities for sharing your thoughts about your faith. You might discuss with your family the Sunday Gospel and what it means to you. The homily from Mass might also be a good place to start the conversation.
Visit www.ChristOurLife.org/family for more family resources.
4. Many adults find it helpful to have a Sunday missal at home. You might find it meaningful to pray the opening prayers of the Mass throughout the week.

Father Kolbe, Like Jesus, Offered Himself
During the Second World War, Father Maximilian Kolbe gave shelter to thousands of Polish people, both Christians and Jews. He risked his life to help these suffering people. On February 17, 1941, he was caught and sent to a prison in Warsaw. A guard who saw his Franciscan habit and his rosary asked, “Do you believe in Christ?” Father Kolbe answered, “Yes, I do.” The guard struck him in the face and asked again. Father Kolbe kept giving the same answer, and the guard kept beating him. After that, Father Kolbe was given a striped convict’s uniform and the number 16670. He was sent to a concentration camp, where he endured very hard work and beatings that almost killed him. Even then, he secretly heard confessions and spoke to the other prisoners about God’s love. When food was brought in, he let others take their share first. Sometimes there was nothing left for him. One day a prisoner escaped from the camp. To punish the rest of the prisoners, the officers said 10 men would be killed. These men would be dropped into a pit and left to slowly and painfully starve to death. The guards chose the 10 men. As the men were gathered, one cried out, “My wife, my children! I shall never see them again!” From the watching crowd, another prisoner stepped forward. “I will take his place,” he said. It was Father Kolbe, prisoner 16670. While they were in the pit, Father Kolbe led the nine other men in prayer and song. The depths of that pit sounded like a church full of people. No one had heard ©
anything like it in the prison before. Father Kolbe prayed and suffered bravely, as Jesus did. He gave his life for another, and he lifted the spirits of the other nine men who died. After his death, the news of Father Kolbe’s great love spread to the whole world. In 1982, he was canonized. We celebrate this saint’s feast day on August 14. Pope John Paul II said of Father Kolbe, “He won a victory of love. He loved both his fellow prisoners and those who put him to death. There is no greater love than this.” How did Father Kolbe live the Mass?

Saint John Neumann Loved Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament
Bishop John Neumann, the fourth bishop of Philadelphia, loved the Mass. He wanted people to have greater faith in the Blessed Sacrament. He often wondered what he could do to bring the people to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. In Bohemia, where he had grown up, people had a devotion called the Forty Hours. The Forty Hours had been started in Rome by Saint Philip Neri many years before. During this devotion, the people took turns praying to Jesus in the exposed Blessed Sacrament. They did this all through the day and night for forty hours. Bishop Neumann wanted to start the Forty Hours in all the churches of his diocese. To his surprise, many priests were against it. There were people in Philadelphia who did not like Catholics. Some had even burned down Catholic churches. The priests were afraid that these people might dishonor Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament if given the chance. Bishop Neumann decided not to go ahead with his plan. One night, Bishop Neumann fell asleep at his desk and left a candle burning. When he woke, he found that the candle had burned down and blackened some of his letters. He was surprised and glad that his letters had not caught fire. He gave thanks to God for his protection. Then he seemed to hear God say “The flames did not harm these letters. No harm will come to me in the Blessed Sacrament either.”
©
After that, Bishop Neumann met again with some priests to discuss the Forty Hours. This time he strongly urged that devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament be introduced in the churches of the diocese, and all the priests voted for it. The Forty Hours was first held on a diocesan level in the United States in 1853. It was held in the Church of Saint Philip Neri in Philadelphia. The people’s faith in the Blessed Sacrament grew, and no harm came to any of the churches. Today the Forty Hours, or some form of it, is still held in many parishes. The days when the Blessed Sacrament is given special honor are called Eucharistic Days. Bishop John Neumann was named a saint by the Church in 1977.

Saint Francis Xavier Helps Jesus
When Francis Xavier was a young man, he did not think about God very often. He was from a rich family. He liked his fine clothes, good food, and household servants. He was educated by tutors in his home, and when it was time, he left home for the University of Paris. While away at college, Francis met another student who rubbed him the wrong way: Ignatius of Loyola. Francis didn’t like him, but Ignatius saw the gifts that Francis had. He saw that Francis was a great leader and teacher. Ignatius talked to Francis often. Slowly Francis came to understand what Ignatius had to say. Ignatius changed Francis’s life by asking the question Jesus asks in the Bible: “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul?” Francis realized that all his gifts came from God. He wanted to use his talents to serve God. He joined with Ignatius and five others to form the Society of Jesus. Those who joined the group were called Jesuits. They promised to go wherever the pope sent them. Francis became a priest. He wanted to go where the people had not heard about Jesus. He wanted to share the Good News. Ignatius told him about India, and he told Francis to go there to “Set all afire!” After a long journey, Francis arrived and began to do the work of Jesus in India. In the morning, he visited hospitals and prisons. Afternoons he spent teaching children about Jesus. In the evening, he would visit families to share the Good News. And at night, he prayed. He worked hard for Jesus and wrote letters about his success there. Many people became Christians. Francis taught these new Christians about their duty to use their talents for God’s kingdom. Francis spent 10 years working in India and other countries in the Far East. It was difficult to travel back then, but nowhere was too far for his desire to serve Jesus. He traveled from India to many islands and even went all the way to Japan. His final goal was to take Jesus to China, but he died of a fever before he could make it there. He had no priest or friend with him. But he had Christ in his heart, and that was all he needed. Saint Francis Xavier is a patron saint of missionaries. We can ask him to pray that we too will use our gifts to help those who do not know about God’s great love. 42

A Birthday Celebration: We Thank God for You Use the following celebration to celebrate a family birthday. You might want to hold this celebration after a family meal, before the birthday cake is served. Be sure that each family member is given a role in this celebration. (Invite the person celebrating his or her birthday to light the candles on a birthday cake.)
Family Member: These candles are a sign of the light you bring to our home. Family Member: We thank God for the gift of life he has given you. We thank him that we are able to share this gift of life with you. Family Member: Let us listen to the Word of God. (A family member reads aloud one of the following: 1 Corinthians 1:4 –9, Colossians 1:9–14, 2 Thessalonians 1:11–12, 1 Peter 1:3–9. Substitute a favorite Scripture passage if you like. Then that family member may wish to explain what this reading is saying or why it was chosen.)
Family Member: Let us pray. Father, we ask you to continue to bless [Name] that the light of his [her] life may shine brightly wherever he [she] may go. We ask you to bless us with continued opportunities for sharing in the joys and sorrows of his [her] life. May the joy we share give you praise and thanks for all your goodness. (Have each family member give the birthday person a special birthday wish, note, or card. Then share the birthday cake and sing “Happy Birthday.” Allow the birthday person to take time to thank each family member or give each person something he or she made or wrote for the occasion. Finish the celebration by singing together “May the Good Lord Bless You” to the tune of “Happy Birthday.”) Make up your own celebrations for other special family occasions. The best celebrations follow a definite plan. Use the following structure to plan your own family celebrations: • Begin with a song or an activity. • Pray a special prayer. • Listen to a Scripture reading followed by an explanation. • Share food. • Plan some way to share the joy of the day. • Conclude with a song or an activity.

We Celebrate God’s Healing Love
We all need to learn how to heal and where to turn to receive healing. If we deny our pain and hurt, healing cannot take place. Many times in Scripture, Jesus the healer reaches out to those in pain and heals them. He makes them whole. When your child sees your willingness to encounter Jesus the healer in your life, your child will allow Jesus to help him or her in his or her pain.
The Church Speaks Ever present in the sacraments of initiation . . . is the sacrifice of Christ, which has reconciled the believers to the Father through the action of the Holy Spirit. This constant awareness of the redemptive sacrifice of Christ in the sacraments of initiation reminds the faithful of their need for conversion, penance, and forgiveness. National Directory for Catechesis #36, B
Reflecting on the Message Our Need for Forgiveness and Healing In our society today, great value is placed on comfort and success. We are driven to succeed at all costs. We are encouraged to do whatever is necessary and to look only to the prize—power, financial security, career success, bragging rights. These goals are presented as our responsibility as parents and caregivers. Anything less is seen as failure, defeat, and embarrassment for you and your family. This is a far cry from the Gospel values Jesus taught, in which we are told “the last will be first, and the first will be last.” (Matthew 20:16) The most dangerous part of this pursuit is how it can blind us to our own actions. A life spent seeking only self-fulfillment is ultimately unfulfilling. We know that this way of life leads to pain, loneliness, and selfjudgment. We hurt and neglect others in our ©
drive to succeed. We alienate ourselves from our families, friends, colleagues, and God. We lose sight of our true nature as children of God, and we lose our consciousness of sin. Even when we resist these pressures, we still recognize in brief flashes the sins we have committed. We become aware of our urgent need for forgiveness. We feel the need to recognize ourselves as loved by God and others, and we seek to know the peace and joy that can be found in God’s healing love.
Sin Is an Obstacle to Peace The effects of original sin have left all human beings in a state of weakness. However, we can live in hope because we have been redeemed by the saving death of Jesus Christ. Through redemption, we are offered a share in Christ’s life that gives us the strength and wisdom to live according to God’s love. God created human beings with free will. Personal sin is still possible. This sin can be a total or partial rejection of our relationship with God. Mortal sin is a grave and serious offense that separates us from God and can cause us to lose everlasting life. Lesser sins, or venial sins, damage our relationship with God. When we decide to follow Christ and love God and our neighbor, we need only acknowledge our sinfulness and accept the mercy and forgiveness that God offers. As believers, our decisions and judgments need to be made from an informed conscience. We inform our conscience by praying to the Holy Spirit for guidance and understanding and through study and consultation of the Church’s teachings. Achieving the final triumph over sin and the union of our wills with Christ will take a lifetime. The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation helps us to follow Christ and conform our lives to his.

44B The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation The Sacrament of Reconciliation continues Christ’s work of reconciling us with his Father and with one another. It is the constant call to conversion that reminds us to examine our lives. We work to see more clearly times when our thoughts, words, actions, or omissions damage our relationship with God and with others. It is primary that we confess any mortal sin and then any venial sin. In the sacrament, we receive our penance from the priest, express our sorrow for our sins, and voice our resolve to follow Christ more closely. The Anointing of the Sick Throughout his life, Christ showed his love and compassion for all those who suffered. The Scriptures show us how he reached out to those who suffered spiritually or physically. He then gave his disciples, and us, his example to follow, teaching that all should reach out to those who suffer. In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, the Church continues to minister to those who are suffering in mind, body, or spirit. The sacrament is especially meant for those who are dangerously ill because of age or illness. They are invited to receive this sacrament in order to be healed if this be for the glory of God and the eternal good of their souls. They are invited to be forgiven and to receive the peace and strength of Christ.
Growing in Christ’s Love Children grow up reflecting the thoughts and attitudes of the adults in their lives. For this reason, it may be time to search in ourselves for where we need the healing touch of Christ. It may be time to look at our values and attitudes to see whether they are based on the Gospel. 1. If you and your family watch television this week, take note of the shows you watch. Are they in keeping with Gospel
values? Do they ridicule and demean people for humor? As you spend time on the computer, take note of the Web sites you visit. Do they promote the values of the Gospel? Take time to examine the values of the media you allow into your personal and family life. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you discern where you might need Christ’s healing grace. 2. Ask God to help you look at the relationships in your life. Is there someone you hold a grudge against? Have you been hurt by someone in the past? Is there anyone in your life you have not yet forgiven? Ask Christ to help you let this go and to heal your heart. 3. Try to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation during this month. You might want to celebrate the sacrament as a family.
Worship and Your Family 1. Make a list of family and friends who are sick or suffering. Have members of your family pray for these people. Plan a way that you might reach out to them, such as a card, a visit, or a phone call. 2. When your child has been offended, talk with him or her about the hurt feelings. Explain that people are allowed to have feelings and that to feel or express hurt and anger is not a sin. Point out, though, that to act on those feelings by hurting another person is a sin. Then help your child to see how the pain can bring growth if he or she forgives as Jesus does. If forgiveness is difficult, pray with your child for the strength to forgive.
3. Through your example and encouragement, help members of your family to appreciate the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to celebrate it regularly. Visit www.ChristOurLife.org/family for more family resources.

How Can You Show Forgiveness?
One of the boys in your class is always showing off. Last week he tore your backpack trying to show how strong he was. Yesterday he broke the CD you had brought to play during a presentation. Now he’s coming up to you on the playground.
Your sister was arrested for shoplifting. At home, she cried and said how sorry she was. A girl named Gina at school heard about it. She joked to her friends that your sister would steal anything that wasn’t tied down. Everyone laughed. Now you meet $1 Gina in the 0.9 hallway. 9
A girl in your class was upset because she failed to win the speech contest. She was angry when you were chosen instead. You overhear her telling some of her friends that you probably won because your father and the teacher are friends. The next time you see her, she calls you a loser.
You always wear clothes your older brother has outgrown. They are nice, but you prefer to have some new clothes of your own. A boy at church asks “Where’d you get the weird shirt?” When you answer that it was your brother’s, he replies “Your mom and dad are dumb. My parents buy me everything new.”
Whenever teams are picked, you are the last one chosen. It hurts to be last. Yesterday there were three others left when a team captain called your name. Before you could move, another child said, “Oh no, not that kid! We’ll lose for sure. Choose Callie!” The captain changed his mind. Later, he feels bad about changing his mind and asks your forgiveness.
Your friend asks you to go bike riding after school. You agree and wait for him to show up, but he never does. The next day he comes to explain and ask forgiveness.

Celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation
Introductory Rites Opening Song
Celebrant: Grace and peace be with you. All: And also with you. Celebrant: God our Father, you love us and
ask us to be your loving children. You are patient with us when we are unloving and sinful. Because you have loved us so much, we recognize our sins and ask your forgiveness. We know you see our desire to change our hearts and to make up for our sins. Help us now to celebrate this sacrament of your healing love so that by being forgiven, we will continue to grow more like your Son, Jesus. Let us pray together now the prayer to the Holy Spirit on page 2 of your Reconciliation booklet. All: (Pray the prayer.)
Celebration of the Word Reading
Celebrant: A reading from the Holy Gospel
according to Luke. All: Glory to you, Lord. Celebrant: (Read Luke 19:1–10.) [Note: The reading may be divided into parts, with the priest reading the words of Jesus and the children reading the narration and words of Zacchaeus. The entire group can be prepared to say the words of the crowd, “He has gone to stay at a sinner’s house.”]
Homily Celebrant: Here at the front of the church
is a barren tree branch and a basket of brightly colored bows [flowers]. After you have confessed your sins to a priest and have received Jesus’ forgiveness, you will want to make up for your sins by bringing happiness where your sins brought sorrow. Kneel before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. If the priest tells you to say a prayer for your penance, do it right away. Think of how you can bring happiness to one person who was hurt by your sins. Then put a bow [flower] on the tree as a sign of the joy you will try to bring others because Jesus has forgiven your sins.

Rose Hawthorne Lathrop Cared for Those Who Were Sick
Rose Hawthorne Lathrop had a motto. She borrowed it from Saint Vincent de Paul, who said, “I am for God and the poor.” Like him, Rose loved God and those who were sick and poor. Rose Hawthorne Lathrop was the daughter of the great American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne. She was born in America, but she traveled with her family through Scotland, France, and Italy. Rose never forgot some of the terrible things she had seen in the crowded Italian cities. She felt sorry for the crippled children in the streets. She wondered why no one stopped to help them. These feelings made her sad. She decided to try to forget about it. But that would not last for long. In 1871, when Rose was 20, she married a man named George Lathrop. They loved each other very much, and soon they had a son. But their son got sick and died when he was only five. George was brokenhearted. He started drinking too much, and his personality changed. Rose began to feel unsafe with him. Finally, she had to leave him. Rose was filled with sorrow. Rose had faith that God would show her what he wanted her to do. Soon, Rose discovered more suffering in the world. She found the terrible suffering of those with cancer, especially those who could not pay for medical care. Many patients

who did not have enough money suffered and died alone. Rose couldn’t ignore her feelings this time. Rose did not have a lot of money, but she had to do something. Her friends told her that her plan wouldn’t work. Rose said, “I can’t do much, but I’ll do the best I can.” She left home in 1896 and moved to the slums of New York City. Rose knew God would help her. She also hoped that when others found out about the suffering of those who were poor and sick, they too would help. Rose found a small place in the slums that she made into a home for cancer patients. She did not accept just anyone into her home. She took only those who could not pay for help and who would probably not get well. In 1899, Rose Hawthorne Lathrop decided to do more for those who were sick and poor. She started a new Dominican order called Servants for the Relief of Incurable Cancer. Today the sisters in Rose’s order continue their work caring for cancer patients whom doctors and medicines cannot cure. They accept donations from people all over, but they do not accept any payment from their patients or their patients’ families. Thousands of people have been cared for in these homes, surrounded by God’s loving presence and care.

Healing of Our Hearts: A Celebration of Forgiveness
Activity
The more we love one another and the more closely we live with one another, the more we can hurt and be hurt by one another. Therefore, it is good to pray for the healing of our hearts at regular intervals, especially when there has been a noticeable disruption of peace within your home.
Leader: It is good for us to gather here in
Jesus’ name to celebrate his great gift of peace. Let us remember Jesus’ great love for his apostles and their love for him. Yet, when Jesus was arrested, the apostles ran to hide; they left him to suffer and die alone. Jesus loved his apostles so much that he greatly desired to give them his forgiveness and peace. Let us pray that he will teach us to forgive with love. Family Member: Lord Jesus, open our hearts to an awareness of your great love. You forgive us and ask that we forgive one another. May your Word help us to recognize your power within us that enables us to give and receive your peace. (A family member reads aloud John 20:19–23.)
Leader: (Say a few words about the reading,
perhaps including some of the following ideas.) • Although Jesus had been hurt by his apostles, he loved them and wanted them to be at peace. • Jesus wants us to do as he did: to love one another and to forgive the pain we have caused one another. • It is not always easy to forgive, but Jesus will help us.
©
Each family member writes notes to other family members. The notes can say something like “[Name], I’m sorry for the time . Please forgive me. Signed, [Name]” I The notes may then be given to the people to whom they are written.
Leader: Jesus, heal our pain. Make our hearts whole. Teach us to forgive one another and to grow in your love.
Sign of Forgiveness Show love and forgiveness to one another, especially to those from whom you received a note asking forgiveness. A gesture would be appropriate, accompanying an expression such as one of the following: • I love and forgive you. • I know you are sorry. • I forgive you.
Leader: Let us join hands and pray
together the prayer Jesus taught us. Our Father . . . Family Member: Lord Jesus, if there is any pain left in anyone’s heart, please touch and heal it now. (Pause.) Help us continue to grow in love of you and of one another. We praise and thank you for your love and forgiveness. Visit www.ChristOurLife.org/family for more family resources.

We Follow Special Ways to Holiness
The Second Vatican Council emphatically reminded us that every member of the Church is called to holiness. Although we may walk different paths, our destination is the same. It is important that you have a true understanding of each path if you are to light the way for your child.
The Church Teaches [A]ll in the Church . . . are called to holiness . . . This holiness of the Church is constantly shown forth in the fruits of grace which the Spirit produces in the faithful and so it must be; it is expressed in many ways by the individuals who, each in his own state of life, tend to the perfection of love, thus helping others to grow in holiness; it appears in a manner peculiar to itself in the practice of the counsels . . . Dogmatic Constitution on the Church #39
Reflecting on the Message God Calls Us to Holiness You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, so wonderfully you made me; wonderful are your works! Psalm 139:13–14
God, who has created each of us, knows how we are made and the gifts we possess. God knows how we can best find happiness and holiness and at the same time, actively lead others to holiness. Therefore, every person is called to undertake some life task for the glory of God and the service of others. This call to a definite way of life is commonly called a vocation. The vocations within the community of the Church are the priesthood, religious life, married life, and single life. Though engaged in a variety of works, the people following each of these vocations are one in their aim for holiness. 64
Religious Life Today Religious life is a fuller expression of the baptismal consecration in which it is rooted. Men and women are moved by the spirit of love to respond to Christ’s call to be like him. They give their entire lives to Christ through vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience. These men and women commit themselves to the service of the Church in the apostolate entrusted to their specific community. The vows of religious enable them to devote their lives to service in the Church. Having given up the goods of this world, religious are witnesses to eternity, where all will follow Christ in perfect love.
The Dedication of Single Life Many people are single, by choice or by circumstance. Some suffer the loss of a spouse, while some are called by God to be single. Many single people today have the responsibility of raising children on their own. Such people face an extraordinary challenge alone and depend on the grace and love of God in order to raise their families. The reasons some people are called to the single life are as varied as the individuals who make up this vocation. Some single people are not bound by the responsibilities of marriage or children. They can be freer to pursue a life of service to humankind. They can devote themselves to developing their talents, interests, and spirituality. Most important for us, they can be a guiding or supporting force behind many of today’s organizations and movements that benefit the world and the Church.

54B The Holiness of Marriage Marriage is a sacrament in which a man and woman reflect the love of Christ for his Church. Marriage partners pledge to unite their individual lives in order to live one life of intimate union. Through their marriage covenant, the man and woman pledge to love and honor each other, no matter what the circumstances, until death. Implicit in this pledge is the intention to help each other attain holiness through their married life. Should they be blessed with children, they also pledge to cooperate in seeing to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of their children. Catholics usually choose to be married within the celebration of the Eucharist. The declaration of their marriage vows is the sign of the sacrament, which is celebrated before God, a priest, and the Christian community. The couple, in turn, enriches the community by generously sharing their spiritual gifts, their time, and their talents.
The Call to the Priesthood Holy Orders is one sacrament having three degrees of ordination: diaconate, priesthood, and episcopate (bishop). Holy Orders calls certain men to act as representatives for men and women in their relationship with God. (Hebrews 5:1) The bishop is ordained to carry out both liturgical and pastoral functions. He is to preside at, administer, and guard the liturgy. He is to teach and preach the Gospel. He is to seek God’s grace for his people through a life of prayer and sacrifice. Priests are ordained to share the functions of the bishop: preaching the Gospel, ministering to the people, and celebrating the Lord’s sacrifice. The deacon’s ministry is threefold: assisting at liturgy, proclaiming the Word, and taking Christ’s love to his people. Both the priest and the deacon exercise their ministry in communion with the bishop.
The call to Holy Orders is a call to holiness according to the model of the Good Shepherd, who came to seek out those who were lost and suffering and to serve those in need. Answering this call is possible for those who seriously strive to live a life of union with God.
Growing in Christ’s Love 1. Reflect on the importance of the various roles in the Church. Talk to your spouse or a close Christian friend about the meaning of holiness. Seek an opportunity to talk with someone in another vocation about seeking holiness. 2. Make a list of 10 people who have helped you to come to know and to love God. Thank God for these people. Ask God to help them continue to respond to his call. Take time to call or to write to one of these people to express your appreciation. 3. Read the description of various calls in the Bible. Notice that God did not promise the people he called that following him would be easy. God did promise, however, to be with them to help them. When your vocation seems difficult, turn to God for help. Read Genesis 12:1–9; 1 Samuel 3:1–21; Isaiah 6:8–13; Jeremiah 1:4–10; or Acts of the Apostles 9:1–19.
Worship and Your Family 1. Pray daily that your child will hear and
follow God’s call, whether to the priesthood or religious life, marriage or single life. 2. Acquaint your child with people following various vocations. You may wish to schedule a time for your child to meet a priest, deacon, brother, or sister. 3. Try to have some Catholic magazines in your home. These will, from time to time, present articles by and about people in various vocations.

Unit 4 Family Celebration
Celebrating Our Family’s Love: Hands That Serve God calls every person to holiness. As part of this call, we are asked to help others become holy. God gives us gifts and talents to use in the service of others. As a family, celebrate the ways you serve one another. Using the following celebration, celebrate your hands that work for the good of all. Pray that God will always put your hands at the service of your family and your world.
Leader: God has been so good in making
us a family! Because we are a family, we have the important responsibility of letting each member know that he or she is loved and appreciated. We show that love by helping when someone is in need. We use our gifts to bring joy and happiness to one another.
Family Member: God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The three Persons in one God are always loving each other. Lord, you have made us a family to love and help one another. Help us to see that we are worthy of love and that we add to the joy of our family. We ask this in Jesus’ name.
Activity Give each family member a sheet of paper on which to trace his or her hand. Have each person write his or her name on the hand. Pass the traced hands. Invite family members to write on each hand one way that the person has used his or her hands to serve the family. Repeat until everyone has written on each hand. Then collect the hands and give them to the family member who is leading the litany prayer that follows.
Family Member: Let us praise and thank
God for the joy and love we have brought to one another with our hands. Please respond “We praise and thank you, Lord.” (Use one statement written on each hand as the basis for the litany. Example: For Tommy’s hands, which show love by setting the table, . . . )
(After the prayers, all family members take a moment to say thank you to one another.)
Leader: Let us join our hands together
(A family member reads aloud Luke 2:39–52.)
and pray the prayer Jesus taught us. Our Father . . .
Leader: (Say a few words to the family about
Family Member: Lord, thank you for the love
the reading, perhaps including some of the following ideas.) • Thinking of others is a sign of maturity. • As Jesus grew mature, he helped Mary and Joseph. (Ask your child how he or she thinks Jesus may have helped.) • In imitation of Jesus, we try to be concerned and helpful to one another. • Without being specific, express your gratitude to everyone for the joy in your family.

we share. As we all grow older, may we also grow closer to one another. Let us show our love through willing service. May the love we share enrich us to love and serve others. We ask this through Jesus Christ your Son.

Unit 5 Family Letter
We Worship God by Living in Love
Sin is so common in our world that we sometimes forget that some ways of living and acting are sinful. We need to remind ourselves and our children that certain behaviors and attitudes are sinful. They are contrary to God’s law.
The Church Teaches [T]he faithful actively respond to God’s loving initiative through . . . works of justice (working to address the injustices that exist in the systemic and institutional organizations of society); and promoting virtues from the natural law such as liberty, solidarity, justice, peace, and the protection of the created order. National Directory of Catechesis #29, G
Reflecting on the Message Respect for Life The life of each human being is sacred. Each life needs to be protected and treated with the greatest respect. Those who follow Jesus condemn sins against life, such as abortion and capital punishment, and work to eliminate social pressures that encourage these practices. Christians act to promote a decent quality of life for all people. They have a special concern for those who are poor, aging, or physically challenged as well as for those who suffer from discrimination. Followers of Christ are concerned with the material, spiritual, and intellectual wellbeing of all. They care for their own lives and health. By celebrating the sacraments, living a life of charity, avoiding sin, and devoting time to prayer, Christians work to foster the eternal life that begins here on earth.
74
Christian Sexuality Followers of Christ accept their own sexuality and that of every person as a sacred gift from God. Each thought, word, and action shows reverence and respect for the dignity and beauty of sex. This is in reference both to the individual and to the faithful love between husband and wife. Sexuality is the combination of all dimensions of the human person that makes one either male or female. The Sixth and Ninth Commandments offer guides to help people live in chastity according to their individual states of life. Christians continue to see married love as a reflection of Christ’s love of the Church. Distortions of this love within or outside marriage are never acceptable. Duties of Justice According to the scriptural account of Creation, God created the material world before creating human beings. He looked at the world, saw that it was good, and in his great love, entrusted it to humanity as a sacred charge. God intended for his people to meet their needs through the wise use and careful management of the gifts of the earth.

62B The Seventh and Tenth Commandments direct Christians to use the world’s resources according to God’s intent. Material things are to be used responsibly, with care and respect. No one has a right to an excessive amount of material goods. Unequal distribution of material wealth causes or permits the continuation of poverty and suffering in the world. Stealing, greed, and all other unjust practices are forbidden by the Seventh and Tenth Commandments. Christians are called to share their material goods and to work for a fair distribution of the world’s resources among all peoples.
Disciples of Truth Jesus said, “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31–32) The Eighth Commandment gives guidelines for communication. False witness and every other sort of untruth are forbidden, whether spoken, written, or communicated in any other manner. In our day of mass communication, this commandment has important implications. People have the right to know the truth. Workers in the field of communications need to strive to present the truth in every message. People on the receiving end of the communications need to demand truthful presentations. The commandment also enjoins us to show respect for the reputations of others. Christians refrain from saying anything, true or untrue, that would harm another’s reputation, and they act to protect that reputation as well. A Christian’s speech is not only truthful and honest but also kind and loving. Remembering the dignity of other people, Christians seek to speak to and of others in a way that will enhance that dignity.
Growing in Christ’s Love 1. During each of the next four weeks, choose one commandment to use in your daily examination of conscience. Evaluate what you have done to protect the dignity of others. Consider ways that you might do better. Note specific concrete actions you could take. 2. Read from Gospels to see how Jesus helped people recognize and live according to their dignity as sons and daughters of God. 3. Read on the Internet some of the documents written by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, detailing the Church’s teaching on the dignity of human life. (Go to www. usccb.org.) A good document on this subject is the pastoral letter “Economic Justice for All.” Consider forming a discussion or study group.
Worship and Your Family 1. Look for ways to discuss with your child the Fifth through Tenth Commandments. For example, discuss television programs you watch. 2. Chapter 22 of your child’s book addresses the Sixth and Ninth Commandments, teaching your child that sexuality is a gift that we should revere in attitude, word, and deed. You may want to read this chapter yourself for ideas on how to approach educating your child about sex. Your parish priest or your child’s teacher may also be able to contribute helpful material or suggestions. Answer your child’s questions simply, honestly, and with an attitude of reverence and appreciation for the gift of sexuality. Discuss God’s law, which helps us to use this gift properly. Our faith gives us the means to preserve our chastity. Visit www.ChristOurLife.org/family for more family resources.

Evan is with a group of boys who are telling dirty jokes. Evan knows this is wrong—but if he leaves, they will make fun of him. 2. Lexi and her sister are shopping for clothes to wear to a birthday party. Lexi’s sister is older and wants a boy to notice her. She picks out a very short skirt to buy. She wants Lexi to buy the same skirt so that they match. Lexi thinks the skirt shows too much of her body. She loves her sister, though, and she does not want to offend her. 3. Dylan has finally made it onto the baseball team. On his first day with the team, he hears a lot of foul language in the locker room after practice. Even the coach joins in. Dylan wants his new teammates to respect him. He is afraid that he won’t fit in. He also knows it is not right to talk like that. 4. Jenna is at home alone because her parents went to a play. She borrowed a DVD from a friend. Jenna has been
wanting to see the movie for a long time. She starts watching it. Halfway through the movie, two married people begin to have an adulterous affair. Jenna wants to finish the movie, but she knows her parents would not like her watching it. 5. Aaron’s friend Moe has been bringing pictures of naked people to school. The pictures are on the back of playing cards. Moe says the cards belong to his grandfather. Aaron has looked at the pictures a few times, and he is starting to feel guilty about it. He knows that these pictures do not show respect for sexuality. 6. Patrick is curious to know more about sex. When his parents aren’t home, he starts to look on the Internet. He searches for words about sex. Almost every Web site that comes up shows pictures of naked people doing inappropriate things. The pictures upset Patrick, but he still wants to know more about sex. When his parents come home, he turns off the computer.
7. Nancy and her mother saw a movie about a girl who went to live with her uncle for a summer. In the movie, the uncle tried to touch the girl in an inappropriate way. The girl screamed and ran to a neighbor’s house to get away. Nancy was very upset by this part of the movie. Afterward, she asked her mother about it. What do you think Nancy’s mother might say about the situation?

The Children of Fatima Kept Their Word
Over a period of months, Our Lady appeared to a girl named Lucia and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco. This happened in 1917 near Fatima, Portugal. She taught the children prayers and asked them to pray for sinners in the world. She also told Lucia three secrets. To Lucia, she said, “You will have much to suffer.” Lucia told her mother, Maria Rosa, about the vision, but she did not tell the secrets. Her mother accused of her lying. “You’re not some kind of religious,” she said. “Why would the Lady appear to you? You’ve seen no such thing! Admit that you’re lying!” Lucia insisted that she was telling the truth. Rumors started to spread. Neighbors began to gossip that Lucia was a crazy girl. They whispered that Maria Rosa was not a good mother because she raised a liar. The family name and honor were being ruined. Maria Rosa threatened to punish Lucia if she did not confess to lying. She took Lucia to the pastor. The pastor reminded her that lying is a terrible sin. He told her that she should admit she was making up a story and confess her sin. Lucia was upset, but she could not give up on the truth, not even to make her life easier. She began to realize what the Lady had meant when she had said, “You will have much to suffer.”

The jailer came back for Francisco. “Tell me!” he shouted. When they said no, he took Francisco from the cell. “Another body for the oil! Think about how you will suffer. And you’re next, Lucia, unless you tell me the secret.” “I would rather die,” replied Lucia. “Very well,” the jailer said. “You shall.” After some time, the jailer came back for Lucia. He gave her one last chance. When she refused again, he took her from the cell. He led her to another room in the jail. When he opened the door, Lucia saw Francisco and Jacinta were alive and unhurt! “There’s nothing more we can do to you legally,” the jailer grumbled. “No one will believe you anyway. Keep your secrets.” The children returned unharmed to Fatima. That same day, the children saw our Lady again and spoke to her.
One day the officials got word of what was going on. They took the three children away and locked them in a room. “If you are not lying,” they said, “then you must tell us the secrets the Lady told you. Only then will we release you.” The children were frightened, but they refused to tell what the Lady said to them. The children were sent to jail, where they cried and prayed the Rosary. The jailer questioned the children, asking them to reveal the secret. The children would not. Finally, he pointed at Jacinta. “If you do not tell, I will boil this girl 82

Following Jesus with Mary, Our Mother
Activity
Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was his first follower. She is the Mother of and model for all who seek to follow his way. We can go to Mary with childlike trust, knowing that she will teach us to follow Jesus. This is her joy.
Discuss some things Mary wants family members to do to make home life happier. Decide on one or two things that all are willing to try to do during the coming week. Think of some special ways to honor Mary during the coming week. (Suggestions: placing a statue or picture of Mary in the dining room; putting flowers before the statue of Mary.)
Leader: When Jesus was dying on the cross, he looked down at his Mother and his disciple John. He did not want to leave either of them alone, so he said to Mary, “Woman, this is your son.” He said to John, “This is your mother.” At that moment, Jesus gave his Mother to all of us to love and honor as our Mother. Family Member: Mary’s one desire is to lead us to Jesus, her Son. She wants to teach us, her children, to listen to his words and to walk in his footsteps. Family Member: Let us pray together the Hail Mary. All: Hail Mary . . . (A family member reads aloud John 2:1–10.)
Pray together a decade of the Rosary or a favorite prayer to Mary. Sing a familiar hymn honoring Our Lady, such as “Immaculate Mary” or “Hail Holy Queen.” Visit www.ChristOurLife.org/family for more family resources.
Leader: (Say a few words to the family about the reading, perhaps including some of the following ideas.) • Mary was like Jesus— always concerned about others. She wanted the wedding to be happy. • Jesus had not intended to begin working miracles yet, but he would not disappoint his Mother. • Mary told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Then she left them with Jesus. Similarly, Mary leads us to Jesus and tells us, “Do whatever he tells you.” ©

24. Joe and his friends got in trouble for hitting baseballs into their neighbors’ flower beds. They are no longer allowed to play in the street. Some of them decide to pull out their neighbors’ flowers the next morning. What do you think about this?
25. When Marcus joins the football team, his teammates take him to a bridge. They tell him that since he is new on the team, he must walk on the rail of the bridge from one side to the other. Should Marcus take the dare? Why or why not?
Bonus The commandments are ways to follow Jesus’ new commandment of love. Choose one commandment. Tell how it is a way to show love. Give an example.

We Worship God by Living in Love
Song Leader: Praise God! We come into his
presence with songs of joy. Know that God made us and we belong to him. Give thanks to him and bless his name, for he is good! His kindness and faithfulness are forever. (adapted from Psalm 100) All: We will celebrate your love forever, O Lord; age after age we will proclaim your faithfulness; for your love lasts forever. (adapted from Psalm 89:1–3)
First Reading Leader: In the Gospel of John, Jesus gave this
message at the Last Supper. Boys: This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. (13:35) Girls: Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. (14:23) Boys: If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love. (15:10) Girls: This is my commandment: love one another as I love you . . . (15:12) All: No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. (15:13)
Responsorial Psalm Leader: The psalm response is “Happy are
they who keep your laws.” How happy are we who follow your law, who respect your commands and seek you with our whole hearts. . . . You have made your laws known, to be faithfully kept. May we be firm in keeping your commands. . . . We think about your every command. We promise to keep your laws. Never leave us alone. . . .
Song Second Reading Reader: (Read 1 Corinthians 13:4–7.)
Petitions Leader: We promise to show our love for
others in many ways. Let us ask Christ to help us make our love for him and others stronger. Let us respond with “Lord, give us your love.” (The children give spontaneous prayers.)
Thanksgiving Prayer All: Lord Jesus, we want to thank you for all your love this past school year. For helping us to better understand your gifts of the Mass and the sacraments, we thank you, Lord. For each new season we celebrated with you in the liturgy, we thank you, Lord. For your command of love, which keeps us on the right path to you, we thank you, Lord. For all who have helped us to know and love you more, we thank you, Lord. For our families and friends, priests and teachers, we thank you, Lord. For our joys and sorrows, good times and bad times, we thank you, Lord. You want us to proclaim the Good News by the way we live. You want us to share with others the love you have given us. Help us this summer to show your love wherever we may be. Bless us all so that we may return to share another year with you and with one another. Amen.

Advent Wreath
Background • • • •
The Advent wreath has its roots among the pre-Christian people of northern Europe. The circular shape reminds us that God has no beginning and no end. The evergreens tell us that God never changes. He will always love us. The green color of the wreath tells us that Advent is a time of hope. God’s people hoped that the Savior would come soon. We hope and wait for Jesus to come again. • The candles remind us of the long time the Israelites waited for the Messiah to come. Each week a candle is lighted. Three candles are violet, a color that reminds us we are getting ready to celebrate a feast. The candle for the third Sunday is rose or pink and reminds us to rejoice, for our time of celebration is getting close.
Advent Wreath Prayers The blessing of the Advent wreath is prayed on the first Sunday of Advent. O God, bless this Advent wreath. May it help us prepare to welcome Jesus, your Son, into our lives, letting the light of his love shine through us. Amen. The candles of the wreath are lighted at the beginning of each week of Advent. The following prayers are prayed as the candles are lighted. Week 1 (Light one violet candle.) Come to us, Lord Jesus. Warm our hearts with your love. Help us prepare for your coming. Help us see the good things others do. Come, Lord Jesus! (Pause for silent prayer.) Week 2 (Light two violet candles.) We believe in you, Lord. We know that you can help us love one another better. You are our light. Come, Lord Jesus! (Pause for silent prayer.) Week 3 (Light one pink and two violet candles.) Jesus, we want your coming to make a difference in how we live and love. Open our hearts to your call as you tell us how we can bring peace and joy to others. Come, Lord Jesus! (Pause for silent prayer.) Week 4 (Light all four candles.) Quiet the worries and fears in our hearts, Lord. Give us your peace. Thank you for the life you share with us. Help us share that life with others. Come, Lord Jesus! (Pause for silent prayer.) Come, Emmanuel
Reader 1: Let us sing “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” asking Jesus to come to us. (All sing while Bible, candles, and manger are carried in procession to the altar or covered stand.) Reader 2: Let us stand as we listen to a reading from John’s Gospel. (Read John 1:19–28.) Reader 3: Let us respond to God’s Word by praying together “A Psalm of Longing.” All: I long for you, God; I thirst for you as a dry, barren desert. I long to see your power and glory, For your kindness is a greater good than life. I will bless you while I live; I will call upon your name and praise you. adapted from Psalm 63:1–6
Reader 4: Let us reflect prayerfully on the psalm as we present our invitations to the Lord. (The children place their invitations in the manger.) Reader 5: Let us offer our petitions. Our response is “Come, Lord Jesus.” That we may appreciate the Sacrament of Baptism . . . That we may live as true witnesses to you . . . That we may help others to know you better . . . That we may learn to be generous and unselfish . . . That we may be more thoughtful of others and less concerned about ourselves . . . That all people may come to know you as their Savior . . .
Song Reader 6: Let us pray. All: O heavenly Father, we are waiting for your Son to come to us. Help us to recognize him when he comes in the words of the Gospel message, in the love of our families and friends, and in our daily work and play. Amen.

We Celebrate the Lord’s Passion
Introduction Leader: Today we have come together to commemorate the Lord’s passion. Let us begin with prayer.
Priest: Father, by the suffering of Jesus Christ, your Son, you have saved us all from sin and death. We thank you for your great love, and we ask for the grace to follow Jesus more faithfully. Amen.
The Lord’s Passion Scene One Reader: After the Last Supper, Jesus and the apostles entered the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus: Sit here while I go off to pray. Peter, James, John, you come with me. I need all three of you to stay awake and pray with me. (goes a short distance and kneels) Father, if it is possible, take this suffering away from me. Not my will but yours be done. (returns to apostles, who are asleep) Peter, could you not watch with me for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not be tested. (goes a short distance and kneels) Father, if this suffering cannot pass, your will be done. (returns to find his disciples asleep) Wake up. Let us go. The person who is going to betray me is near.
Judas: (enters with soldiers and kisses Jesus) Hail, Master. (The soldiers take hold of Jesus.)
Peter: (waving a sword) Leave it to me, Master. 96
could send armies of angels to defend me. (to the soldiers) You have come with swords and clubs to arrest me as if I were a robber. Yet, when I was teaching, you never laid a hand on me. But this is your hour of darkness.
Scene Two Reader: Jesus was brought before the high priest, Caiaphas, and accused by false witnesses. At the same time, in the courtyard, Peter joined people warming themselves at a fire.
First Accuser: (pointing at Jesus) I heard you say that we must not pay taxes to Caesar.
Second Accuser: This man has broken the laws of our religion. He even works on the Sabbath! Worst of all, he claims he is God’s Son.
Caiaphas: (to Jesus) Have you anything to say? (Jesus is silent.)
Jesus: Friend, do you betray me with a kiss?
I will save you.
Jesus: Peter, put your sword away. My Father
Woman: (in a loud whisper to Peter) I think I’ve seen you somewhere. I remember! You were with that man Jesus.
Peter: I was not.

82B Third Accuser: (pointing at Jesus) This man threw people out of the Temple with great violence! He said he could destroy our sacred temple and rebuild it in three days.
Second Woman: (to Peter) You are one of his followers. I know it! You talk like him.
Peter: I don’t know anything about him. Caiaphas: (to Jesus) Answer. Are you God’s Son?
Servant: (to Peter) I’m sure you are one of his followers. I’ve seen you with him.
Peter: I tell you, I don’t know the man. Jesus: You ask me whether I am the Son of God. It is as you say.
Caiaphas: (to the crowd) You hear him! He calls himself God! What is the verdict?
All: He must be put to death! Reader: As Jesus was led out, he looked at Peter with love and forgiveness. Peter went out and cried.
Scene Three Reader: Jesus was put on trial before Pilate. Caiaphas, other priests, and soldiers were present. Pilate: What charge do you bring against this man? Caiaphas: He is a criminal, or we would not have brought him to you. Pilate: I govern for Rome. Take this man and judge him according to your own laws. Caiaphas: We don’t have the power to put anyone to death. We need you to do that. Pilate: Does he deserve death? Caiaphas: He has roused the people by saying he is king. Pilate: (to Jesus) Are you king of the Jews?
©
Jesus: My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would be fighting for me.
Pilate: Tell me plainly. Are you a king? Jesus: It is as you say. I am a king. I came into the world to proclaim the truth.
Pilate: I find nothing wrong with this man. I will just have him whipped. (The soldiers lead Jesus away.)
Caiaphas: If you let him go, you are no friend of Caesar’s.
Pilate: (to the crowd) At the Passover feast, you have a tradition of receiving back a prisoner. Whom shall I release to you? Shall I release Jesus, the man who claims to be the Son of God? Or shall I release the thief and murderer Barabbas?
All: Barabbas, not this one. Pilate: Surely this is not what you want. Barabbas is a murderer.
All: We want Barabbas! Give us Barabbas! Pilate: And what would you have me do with this Jesus?
All: Crucify him! (Jesus is led in, wearing a crown of thorns and scarlet cloak.)
Pilate: Look at this man! He has done you no wrong!

Jesus: It is finished. (bows head and dies) (The room darkens.)
Memorial Acclamation or Song Veneration of the Cross Priest: We have recalled your sufferings, Lord. You suffered on the cross for our sins. To thank you for dying on the cross for us, we wish to honor you in a special way. We come before your cross and kiss it, thanking you for showing us such great love. (All present venerate the cross.)
All: Crucify him! Crucify him! Pilate: Shall I crucify your king? All: We have no king but Caesar.
The Lord’s Prayer All: Our Father . . .
(Two servants enter with a basin and water.)
Pilate: (washing hands) I wash my hands of the blood of this innocent man.
Scene Four
Reader: Jesus was led out of Pilate’s house. A large cross was placed upon his shoulders. People mocked and laughed at him. He walked the rough road to Calvary, carrying his cross. When he could no longer do it alone, the soldiers forced a man named Simon to help carry the cross. Once Jesus reached the hill, the soldiers pulled off his garments. They nailed him to his cross. Upon the cross were the words “Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews.”
Dismissal Leader: We have seen how good God is! We have seen God’s great love for us. Let us go now to love and serve others in his name.
Closing Song
Jesus: Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing. (to Mary) Mother, behold your son. (to John) This is your mother. (Pause.) I thirst.

What truths do you think are important for children to accept about themselves? • How do you help your child avoid or overcome feelings of envy or resentment? • How can parents help their children realize that they are loved in different but equal ways? • Children’s fears can paralyze their growth. What are some fears children have? What are some fears you perceive in your child?
• Children express their curiosity about sexual matters in a variety of ways. How can you initiate wholesome instruction on the subject of sex before your child searches for information elsewhere? • How does exposure to popular media build up or tear down your child’s sense of worth? How can you increase the positive value of popular media in your child’s emotional and moral development? • In what ways do you hope participation in religion classes will help your child develop a positive self-image and good moral character?
• How do you encourage your child when he or she is confronted with problems that are frightening or intimidating? How do you reassure your child in these situations? • Children feel worthwhile when others show an interest in them and in the things that are important to them.
