Modern Houses Things in the Kitchen The kitchen is the place where you prepare and make food! Almost all houses have a kitchen. In a kitchen there is often an oven, a microwave, a fridge to keep food fresh, a table where you eat, chairs to sit on, cupboards where you keep plates, glasses and cups, a kettle for heating water, and a sink to wash the dirty dishes. There are drawers where you keep the cutlery, and some kitchens have a dishwasher—a machine that washes the dishes for you!
Did you know...? Kitchens look clean, but they have more germs than the bathroom! Things in the Living Room The living room is the place in a home where you relax and talk with your family or friends. What is there in your living room? In living rooms, there is usually a sofa, an armchair, a TV, curtains that you close when it gets a dark, a coffee table, a bookcase, pictures on the walls, lamps, a rug, and many other things, too!
Did you know...? The word sofa comes from Egypt. The Arabic word is suffah. 62 What Makes a House a Home?

Did you know...? There are more TVs in the world than there are people!

Things in the Bedroom This is the place where you sleep, and also where you play! What is there in your bedroom? All bedrooms have a bed! There are many other things, too. There is usually a closet where you keep your clothes, a
desk to do homework, a rug or sometimes a carpet, toys, and a bedside table with a lamp and an alarm clock on top. There are usually pictures and posters on the walls, and there’s a bookcase full of your favorite books!
Did you know...? We spend more time on our beds than on any other item of furniture. Humans spend a third of their lives sleeping. 64 What Makes a House a Home?

Things in the Bathroom This is the place where you clean yourself. What is there in your bathroom? In bathrooms you will usually find a shower or a bathtub, a toilet, a sink for washing your hands or brushing your teeth, towels for drying your hands, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a mirror, a bath mat, and a laundry basket for your dirty clothes.
Did you know...? The toilet uses more water than any other appliance in the home. The average person spends three months of their life on the toilet! Things in the Yard Some homes have a yard. This is the place outside the home where you can enjoy being out of the house! In the yard, there may be a lawn, flower and vegetable beds where flowers and vegetables grow, a greenhouse, a shed when you keep garden tools, a pond (which sometimes has fish in it), deckchairs for sitting in when it’s sunny, a bird box, a bench, and lots of plants!
Did you know...? Insects are very important in a yard. They take pollen from one plant to another. Worms are important in a yard, too. They keep the soil clean! Conclusion Our houses are full of things. Things that are useful, and things that we need to make our lives more comfortable. But, what makes your house a home? Maybe having all your special things there, and enjoying your house with your family and friends. What Makes a House a Home? 65
