A CASE FOR ATHLETICS E G Y M R E N OVAT I O N S 2018 - 2019

THE MISSION

OF SECOND BAPTIST SCHOOL The mission of Second Baptist School is to train students in the areas of knowledge that will allow them to understand clearly, to think deeply, to judge wisely and to have the courage to live their lives on the great principles and convictions of biblical truth as they engage an innovative and digitally-based global community.

“As director of athletics, I am blessed to be able to aid our incredible coaches in the process of inspiring athletes to claim victory both on and off the field. My personal passion is to see our studentathletes graduate with experiences and relationships that God will use as a lifechanging part of their testimony.

- Mike Walker, Director of Athletics

A CASE FOR ATHLETICS The goal of our athletic program is to provide an environment of competition, cooperation and teamwork for our students that will glorify God and provide valuable life lessons. The athletic program at Second Baptist School teaches lifelong skills of teamwork, sportsmanship and strategic thinking through sports teams and physical education classes. Our coaches are dedicated to assisting all students in reaching their maximum potential as an athlete, but more importantly, as an outstanding citizen. SBS offers a wide variety of teams to choose from, and all students are encouraged to try out for any and all sports that are offered. For our student athletes, it is crucial the school provides access to facilities that support their passions. Currently, the athletic facilities on our campus do not fully match the quality of our athletic program. We believe now is the time to elevate the profile of our athletic program in the form of enhancements to the E Gym entrance and locker rooms. The $1.5 million initiative provides funding to renovate this athletic facility.

Extensive renovations to the Second Baptist campus are already underway. These updates will benefit the school community thanks to its partnership with Second Baptist Church. • The Green, formerly the Rocky Playground, is utilized by our lower school students during their recess period and the entire school community during football games and other events. • Upgrades to the Fellowship Hall/Cafeteria and kitchen taking place during the 2018-2019 school year will significantly impact campus life for all SBS students in the lower, middle and upper schools. • Enhancements to the atrium in E Building will provide an inclusive space for community members and visitors to appreciate and enjoy. The number of athletic programs offered at Second Baptist School that utilize the E Gym locker rooms has almost doubled since the E Gym was built in 1986, growing from 18 to 30 teams. Renovating the entrance and locker room areas will provide muchneeded space for the expansion in our middle and upper school athletic programs. Prospective families and visiting teams alike will see the quality facilities offered to our students. • The redesigned entrance to the E Gym will be expanded to include big-screen TVs, new graphics and wall coverings, welcoming SBS families and visitors on campus for athletic events. • Varsity lockers for both men and women will mirror the quality of those in the Athletic Center. • The women’s locker room area will gain a foyer with soft seating and a team meeting room.
