SBU BEARCAT BASEBALL
PRESIDENT / ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
D
r. C. Pat Taylor, the 24th president of Southwest Baptist University, is the Bearcats' biggest fan. He and his wife, Judy, attend almost all SBU athletic events. Driving his purple car, wearing purple daily, and the naming of their two new dogs, B.C. (Bearcat) and Sbu, are just a few ways they show their loyalty and passion for SBU and Bearcat athletics. A native of Salem, Kentucky, Dr. Taylor follows sports of every kind — from Kentucky basketball to St. Louis Cardinals baseball. Dr. Taylor holds a doctorate of education from Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis), which he received in 1975. He earned his master’s degree in 1971 from Western Kentucky University (Bowling Green, Kentucky) and graduated with a bach-
elor’s degree from the University of Tennessee - Martin in 1968. Prior to working at SBU, Dr. Taylor was the chief academic officer (Provost) and a professor of education at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He held this position from 1986 until coming to SBU in October, 1996. Dr. Taylor held several different positions at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, before moving to OBU. Those positions included associate vice president for academic affairs from 1982-86, assistant to the president for long range planning from 1982-86, and assistant academic dean from 1979-82. He also worked for Union from 1972-73 as an admissions counselor. From 1975-79, Dr. Taylor served as an assistant/associate professor of education at Belmont College. He held several other positions prior to his appointment at Belmont, which include teaching and coaching at Geeter
The 2013-14 year will mark Mike Pitts’ fourth as Director of Athletics after serving as the Interim Co-Director of Athletics in 2009-10. Pitts has also worked for SBU as Assistant AD for Operations and as the Media Relations Director. Pitts serves on many committees in the MIAA, including the MIAA Institutional Representative Council, the MIAA Championships and Officiating Committee, the MIAA Awards Committee, the MIAA Basketball Tournament Committee, and the MIAA Conference Realignment Committee.
MIKE PITTS DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
mpitts@sbuniv.edu (417) 328-1412
Pitts’ vision for the department of athletics is one focused on the student-athletes. When he was named Director of Athletics in May 2010, Pitts shared that he envisioned a culture where SBU’s student-athletes could have the best possible environment to grow spiritually, academically, athletically, relationally, and as leaders. Under Pitts’ leadership, the department of athletics has grown in areas of personnel, facilities, corporate sponsorships, and finance. Pitts has built key relationships on and off campus – and has brought a culture of organizational clarity to the department. “I say this every year - but this is the most excited I've been about the SBU Bearcats," Pitts com-

High School in Memphis, Tenn. and Crittenden County Schools in Marion, Kentucky. He has also held several professional appointments, including Vice President of the Association of Southern Baptist Colleges and Schools during the 1995-96 school year.

mented. "We will have nearly 400 student-athletics playing 18 sports - and I want them to have the best experience they possibly can here at SBU. It's a time when they will grow athletically, academically, relationally, spiritually, and as leaders. I'm looking forward to 2013-14 in a big way!” Pitts is a 1985 graduate of SBU majoring in economics. He also completed his MBA from SBU, graduating from the program in the summer of 2010. After graduating in 1985, Pitts moved to Kansas City where he worked as a trading floor manager at the Kansas City Board of Trade for nearly nine years. In 1994, Pitts moved to Princeton, New Jersey where he was the founding pastor of Princeton Bible Church. After 12 years in New Jersey, Pitts and his family moved back to Bolivar, where Pitts became the Sports Information Director for the Bearcats. Regarding the journey that brought him full circle back to SBU, Pitts said, “It’s like we never left. While we lived in Jersey, we came back to Bolivar several times each year. We would always catch a couple of basketball games over the holidays. The Internet was a great invention, because it was easy to keep up with how SBU’s teams were doing.” Mike Pitts has been married to his wife Rhonda for 22 years. They have two sons, Jack and Brock, who are avid sports fans. For hobbies, Pitts enjoys reading, watching classic movies, computer games, and cooking for family and friends. He has also completed two marathons (Disney and Baltimore) and one halfmarathon (Baltimore).

SBU BEARCAT BASEBALL
2014 SEASON OUTLOOK WITH CHRIS MARTIN
T
he SBU Bearcats baseball team will start its season in mid-February looking to build off of back-to-back 20 win seasons. Last year’s Bearcat team finished the season with a 20-29 record, 18-21 in the MIAA. After competing all year for a berth in the MIAA post-season tournament, this year’s Bearcat team wants to finish the job. “We had three major goals when we started two years ago. One of them is to play into the post-season. Our guys understand what that would mean for the program and I certainly think that our guys work hard enough to deserve that opportunity,” noted Bearcat head coach Chris Martin. A year after featuring a team that had 20 freshman and 11 sophomores and saw 25 new faces in the program, this year’s team has more continuity. The year’s squad brings back 23 players from last year’s team, including 8 offensive starters. The Bearcats will once again need to rely on their offense to score runs. The Bearcats return a number of key performers from last year. Returning is All-MIAA selection from a year ago Landon Young, who will once again anchor the middle infield with Ross Wolfe. The two have combined to make 190 of the last 198 starts in the middle infield for the Bearcats. Spencer Blacksher returns for his third season at third base. Blacksher was one of the top hitters in the MIAA a season ago, hitting .350 with 6 homeruns. Drew Miller also returns for his final season behind the plate. The former All-Region selection battled an injury a year ago but was healthy all fall and figures to make a major impact in the middle of the lineup. Bo Helsel returns for his final season, and has been a steady contributor for the Bearcats the last two years. Christian Binger will move to the outfield this year, after starting the last half of the season a year ago, Binger had the best fall amongst the Bearcat hitters. Zach Pirrello, Kyle Jochems, Josh Herrick, Jarod Robillard and Tyler Hampton all also return for the Bearcats and figure to play a bigger role this spring. Newcomers Cole Doherty, Jake Vore, and Chance Wolfe all also figure to contribute heavily to the Bearcat lineup. Martin is excited about the depth this team presents. The Bearcat pitching staff will feature a number of new faces this year. Once again, consistency out of the group will be key. Cole Roark returns for his second season, and he was one of the best Bearcats this fall and will be relied upon heavily in the rotation. Tim Collins also returns for the Bearcats. Both sophomores will be relied upon to help anchor the staff, but the Bearcats recruiting efforts helped land five guys who are expected to contribute this year. Brady Greear, Cory Borsh, Matt Dye, Spencer Andrews, and Sam Vergara all should make an immediate impact on the staff. As the Bearcats enter into the 2014 season, Martin wants to see his team have success. “One of the things you develop as you start to retain players and are around them for three or four years is wanting to see them succeed. When I look at our players I really want to see them do well. I think our guys deserve to play on a big stage at the end of the year, so I really want that for them. For me that would

SBU BEARCAT BASEBALL
2014 SEASON OUTLOOK WITH Chris MARTIN be a great cap to some great careers, but for our team we can’t look that far ahead. We have to win each day and then do it again the next day. I know we will have challenges this spring, but I like the group I am with. Our promise to each other is to give each other our best every day.” The Bearcats open the season on February 17th vs Mankato State in Bolivar.

C
hris Martin enters into his 3rd season as head baseball coach at Southwest Baptist University. Coach Martin led the 2013 Bearcats to a 20-29 record. The win total marked the first time the program has had back to back 20 win seasons since 2005-06. The 2013 Bearcats set or tied five different single season or single game SBU records including a MIAA conference victory total of 18. The Bearcats finished two wins shy of the MIAA post-season tournament. Landon Young was named to the All-MIAA Honorable Mention Team and Zack Winchester was named MIAA Athlete of the Week in February. The Bearcats biggest wins included defeating then #5 University of Central Missouri in late March and the programs first victory vs Missouri Southern since 2007. Coach Martin led the 2012 Bearcats to a 21-28-1 record, tripling their win total from 2011 and posting the highest number of wins in the program since 2005. The Bearcats tied or set 11 different single season or single game SBU records. The season also produced three All-MIAA selections including 1st team catcher Drew Miller. Two Bearcats were also named to AllRegion teams. Two different players earned MIAA Player of the Week honors and Drew Miller was named the NCBWA National Hitter of the Week in March. SBU’s season was punctuated with a doubleheader sweep of then #8 ranked Emporia State. Martin’s teams have also seen success in the classroom. During the 2012-13 academic year the Bearcats compiled a cumulative 3.07 GPA and boasted a plus 3.0 GPA each semester. In the spring 28 (out of 41) athletes had a plus 3.0 GPA and a total of nine Bearcats had a 4.0 GPA in the fall or spring. In his two years, Martin has had one player named a MIAA Scholar Athlete, three players awarded the MIAA Academic Excellence Award and 38 named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. All 14 of his seniors have graduated or will graduate this year. "Since the very day Chris took over our baseball program, he has made an immediate impact," Director of Athletics Mike Pitts stated. "In addition to success on the field with 20+ wins, our kids are in a culture where they will grow as students, leaders, and Christians. From where I sit - I'm hoping that Chris Martin is
our baseball coach for many, many years to come." Martin started his coaching career in 2007 as an assistant at SBU. He served in that capacity through 2010. Martin also played at SBU from 2002-06. He was named the MIAA Commissioners Academic Honor Roll three times and was named the Rex Brown Award recipient following his senior season. “I've known Chris ever since he was an outstanding student at SBU,” SBU President Dr. Pat Taylor stated. “After he graduated we employed him to be a head resident director at one of our dorms where he did an outstanding job in that role. He then moved to athletics full time and has done an excellent job. Chris has done an excellent job with everything we have asked him to do.” Martin is originally from Iberia, MO. A 2007 graduate of SBU, Martin also received his Masters in Business Administration degree from SBU in the summer of 2009. The Martin family has a total of six degrees from Southwest Baptist University. Martin also serves as a member of the Athletics Administration team in the role of Assistant Director of Athletics/Operations.
